- I've recently got into drawing celtic knots and have been playing with patterns based on the triquetra (sometimes referred to as the trinity knot).
Some of my initial drawings were inspired by this video by David Nicholls • Celtic Design 19 (six ...
I like to see what I can do to expand and extend patterns, and so, in this video I share my process of working towards a complex pattern of linked circles and knots, sharing tips I discovered along the way. I hope you find it useful.
I used this pattern to make an ink and watercolour painting, and you can see the process of that in this video • Painting a Celtic Knot... and find the original, if it's still available, in my shop - loudavis.co.uk/product/linked...
I have some recommendations for finding more about Celtic Art. A couple of channels on RUclips; David Nicholls and Aon Celtic Art are both really helpful. I've also been working through Aidan Meehan's 'The Book of Celtic Design' and have found lots of inspiration there.
SUPPLIES
Pens:
I like uni-pin waterproof fine line drawing pens. I use every size from 0.03 to 0.8 so I buy them in sets of multiple sizes whenever I see an offer on them!

Sketchbook:
Made by me to be perfect for making circular designs! I used to sell these but they were pricey to make in small quantities so didn't sell many ... but if there's demand, I could look into it again!

Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
Hello! Such a beautiful place you live :)
Wonderful instructions and beautiful results. Thanks
Thank you so much!
💚🖤 WOW that is beautiful and looks so complicated, but you explain it so well. TY
Thank you!
Everything looks far too complicated for me to attempt, but thanks to your calm and logical way of explaining everything, even I can have a go. Thank you 😊
Thanks, I hope you give it a go - and be kind to yourself!
thank you for these tutorials. you’re so easy to follow and understand. ❤❤
you're welcome, really glad you've found them helpful.
Love this. I’ve been wanting to learn these. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing intricate design explained logically …🙂
Glad you liked it :)
I have been working on my celtic designs off and on for weeks since watching your videos. My goal is to create by figuring things out myself after watching you. I found that after drawing circles, then erasing, it was very hard to decipher the holes, so used a marker called Frixion to mark the holes. This marker leaves a spot that can only be erased by its own special eraser, not pencil erasers.
Your more complex designs are lovely, but I think I’ll stick with the more simpler ones for now. Thank you. And I would love a high quality square watercolor sketchbook if you start producing them again.
Thanks so much, I'll have to look out for those markers, they sound useful!
I like watching other artists but then need to figure things out in my own way too.
