I can't guarantee how this modification will affect your Joy-Con in the eyes of Nintendo. This is mostly a hex edit that shouldn't get you banned from online activity, but I can't guarantee that. Know that you are doing this at your own risk, Thanks!
This was the only thing keeping me from considering buying Colorware joycons. (I'm more of a stickler for HUD elements matching than I am for potential risks playing online with modded controllers) Thanks for the tip!
why would they ban you for changing a color value? (before you ask no i havent been banned becuz i dont even have a switch yet, i'm getting mine on the 19th of this august)
I did this to my gray ones. I made them solid black with white buttons so I could easily identify them after playing with friends, that way I didn't have to mark them physically in any way.
This was extremely helpful. In order to get the backup to stop crashing I had to uninstall and reinstall the Visual C++ redist (x64 and x86) a few times. After that it worked fine. Now my Joy-Cons are gold to match my whole Famicom situation.
For people who keep asking if this voids the warranty, this is directly lifted from the Switch's Warranty statement (UK/AU/NZ version): "This warranty does not cover... the Product if it has been opened, modified or repaired by any person or company other than Nintendo or its authorised partners, or if the Product has its serial number altered, defaced or removed;" Modified in this case includes altering firmware, so proceed at your own risk.

I feel like instead of dmca-ing this(like Nintendo always does) Nintendo should hire the guy who made this and integrate in to the settings on the switch
I wondered when I got my Splatoon bundle how it stored this information. Now I know it's a very straightforward method to color code each one. This is incredible planning on Nintendo's part. Hey, so I have a friend who called Nintendo of America and asked if this would be a reason to ban online: This is counted as a cosmetic mod. As long as you don't do something to the controller that would allow cheating in games, it will only void your warranty. This is safe to do (outside of warranty) and shouldn't result in a ban.

Does no one get what this is for? As he said in the video. It is so you can match the colour of your joycon with the colour you painted it with! It is not pointless. It's a nice thing for modders
lets say you have 20 joycons. there all different colors but on the screen it says its grey, imagine you lose one and you use the find joycon feauture, waste about 20 minutes to see which joycon it is..
My animal crossing controller got vomited on so i had to change the shell from a different joycon, this really helps me replace it without having to buy two
Not to mention that ACNH players can trick their game into thinking that they have the special edition Switch made for the game and thus they can get the special one in-game.
Wow! All these years later and this still works! You saved my joy con! I bought hall effects sticks for my green joy cons since they were drifting and when replacing the sticks I noticed the battery on the left one had inflated so I pulled the battery out but ended up breaking the connector on the board. Couldn't find another green left joy con so I bought a refurb from Nintendo and swapped everything out to the green shell. I FORGOT the color thing and it was super bugging me to the point I was about to try and find another $80 pair to replace this with but then remember this video from all those years back. AND IT STILL WORKS! Awesome stuff!
Thankyou so much, I customised my switch earlier this year and wanted to do this but couldn't find the right tutorial. I'm so happy I stumbled across this video, I did this within 30 minutes and I'm beyond happy. Thankyouuuuuuuuu
I think what's interesting is that it seems to suggest that future joycons might actually have different colored buttons/joysticks just like the Zacian/Zamazenta edition.
this is so good when most of us have the red and blue ones, and we all sync to someone's switch and then argue who's who because it's the same colour LOL (well we can look at the green squares but not all my family is tech savvy) switching my joycon's colours would help differentiate fast
My grey joycons had stick drift on the left side, after I decided to replace the stick I figured I'd buy a shell for cheap, so I got the OEM pastel pink and yellow. Nice to know I can change the color with this cool software. Thanks for the video
Thanks, bro! Going to be modding my joycon soon, making them gold, so this tutorial helped/will help a bundle! It’ll certainly add some more character to the joycon. Thanks again :)
Just to confirm, I tried this myself with my OLED White Joycons, and they still work! They only disconnected once, but still work otherwise. I rewrote them to the Skyward Sword Exclusive switch colors since I didn't wanna buy the Skyward Sword Joycons, knowing how expensive THOSE are... I also backed up the original files too, don't worry. ;3
I'm seeing a heated war in the comments about this, but I'd like to have evidence just to be sure: HAS ANYONE PLAYED ONLINE USING JOY-CON WITH EDITED COLOURS, AND HAVE YOU BEEN WARNED/BANNED BY NINTENDO? Oh and also, is it possible for Nintendo to see if the colours have been edited, even if you change them back before sending them in for repairs (do joy-con save records or something)? I doubt it, but I guess anything's possible.
Nintendo can read the chip inside the Joy-Con and see if the saved colors match up with the actual ones. If they don't, you have voided your warranty. The type of chip that is used in the Joy-Con *is not* capable of creating any kind of logs or similar. So if you flash the original colors you've un-voided your warranty ; ) Nintendo *could* ask for your Joy-Con colors everytime you connect to their servers, and they *could* host an "allowed colors" database to determine if you should be banned or not, but I really doubt they actually do. Still, if they did it that way, they *could not* see that you changed the colors if you only use the retail ones.

GomuNingen Pls tell me you are joking
This is for people that painted the joycons
I Hate Blue at colorware you can just customise them and buy them
Dick Toaster For $120 no thanks
Looks like the system draws the colors of the joycons the same way Splatoon draws ink colors. Interesting stuff.
I think it's a neat thing for those people that painted their joycons but quite useless otherwise.
Definitely gonna do this,
If/when I get the grey joycons.
Damn you lost a lot of weight
Time to get Color Ware to do this with their custom joycons
I contacted Nintendo, they said that doing this will void the warranty. Expect a firmware blocking this. Ha Ha.
Finch Harper why did you do this? You're just ruining it for the people who wanted this
Some people are just douche bags.
Haha no you didn't
Little Paws Music Maker it is more safe. If switch gets hacked, Nintendo will turn into sega
"Yeah uh.. Nintendo, I know it's 1:30 am and I'm sorry to wake you up but I just watched Spawn waves video on changing colors in your joy con software and you should stop that"
Nintendo: "Yes sir! Right away sir!"
You expect us to believe that?
Deep down inside we all know that hot pink is a real man's color.
And who want this realy? Virtual Joy-Con are colored, and now?
UndeadCollector It's just cosmetic.
People who paint or order different colored shells can now make the software match
UndeadCollector if you had paid attention to the video you would know shitfuck
and that matters why?
Josiah Araki Why would you have a wallpaper on your computer?
Did u know u just made my day way more better !!😭😭💖💖😂😂😂
