In 1977 I went with my rugby team from Canada on a tour of Wales. One of the teams we played was the Llanelli junior side. I think they were unbeaten that year. We had a good team made up of 16 & 17 year old's. Low scoring close game and can't remember who won. I was a prop and their hooker knocked me out. Before the game they handed out playing cards before the meal and the winner would get a pound note from Phil Bennett. I was sitting across from Phil and I won the pound note. I was very shy and didn't say a word. I regret not having him sign the note. Probably spent it at the pub that night. Our high school in Vancouver had several Welsh players come and visit and took part in our practice. J. J. Williams and Garth Edwards I think. Maybe J.P.R. Williams. What an experience that tour was. Travelling to different towns and playing the local school teams. Staying at the houses of the players. Going to the old Cardiff Arms park to see a game. drinking in pubs. Beautiful girls. RIP Mr. Bennett. I had dreams of marrying a welsh girl I met and playing rugby there.
As a proud 63 year old irishman who loves his rugby i remember this genius all too well. Yes, he tormented us with his jinxing runs, yes he often came away from Dublin with our scalp on his belt, but he and his magnificent Welsh colleagues were a sight to behold and as good sportsmen we had to just accept that the best team had won and that we had been entertained. RIP lovely humble man, may God rest your soul, I will never ever forget you.
The Irish are always kind and magnanimous about other non Irish players. Fine tribute and thank you for your generosity. Chware teg boys.
Rugby will never ever see his like again, a magician with the ball in his hands, as an Englishman who played the game the same time as Phil, nowhere near as good as Phil may I add, but when watching him , there was always the anticipation that he was going to do something special at any moment, so sad your no longer with us Phil. RIP LEGEND 🙏🙏🙏👌❤️

A Rugby union of the highest order. King Gareth at 9. King Phil at 10..Welsh Wizards. Celtic Legends. Lions. R.I.P. GBNF. Commiserations to families and other loved ones and closest of friends.
One has to wonder what would have happened if Barry John had not retired, but Phil took his place and did more than succeed in his place.

The Wales no.10 factory has now closed. So sad with the passing of both Phil Bennet and Barry John. Never ever will see again
