I'm French, and I discovered rugby when I was about 8 years old, watching the 5 Nations tournament. As a young boy I supported my national team and saw the Welsh players as formidable opponents. Gareth Edwards, Steve Fenwick, JPR Williams, Gerald Davies and, of course, Phill Bennett are names that have stayed with me ever since. Now, as an adult, I see these players as the epitome of the beautiful game. I sincerely believe that these players embodied what rugby is all about. They are role models and have no equivalent in any other country. I'm nostalgic for amateur rugby, with its many passes, no advertising and no systematic frontal impact. Thank you, dear Welshmen, for having thrilled us so much.
Goose bumps and tears watching this, My favourite back of all time, the man was a magician, I was there at Murrayfield for that try ; what a sublime pass by Fenwick, what a gentleman Benny was, sadly missed, Gwir Fab o Gymru, Diolch yn fawr
A genius rugby player, I was lucky enough to watch him on TV playing rugby when I was a kid, so inspiring, one of the very greatest fly halfs there has been and will ever be, one of the most important parts of one of the very few greatest teams ever in rugby union, Phil Bennet, Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams, Derek Quinnell and the others who inspired Welsh rugby for 50 years (and many of the other home home nations rugby players, I grew up in England ) luckily some of their matches are available on tv, youtube etc, Phil's legacy will never die, thank you Phil, still inspiring me, thank you for the tribute, RIP
As an Irish man who remembers all of these games in that era, he was just fantastic, there were so many fabulous welsh players in that golden era Phil was an icon, thanks for the wonderful memories even if it meant beating us. RIP PHIL BENNETT
As a kid growing up in new Zealand, was lucky enough to have seen this legendary player weave his magic,he was a household name, infact,so was the Welsh team of the 70,80s respect from AOTEAROA..
Wonderfull tribute, to a true legend, like all the greats of that day he was electric that Babarians v All blacks game in 73 still the greatest game of running rugby i have ever seen. Writing this the week of Barry John`s passing a month after J.P.R all these childhood memories flooding back , oh it was great to be Welsh in the 70`s there was magic dust mixed in with the coal dust around the valleys in those days for sure.
When the 1977 Lions tour of New Zealand was announced, my father and I decided to see as many games in the North Island as we could. We saw six, including the First Test. We were in awe of Phil Bennett. We had only seen him on television up to then and to see him on the field in the flesh was to step up to another level altogether. He was simply magic.
As a Frenchman, he is a legend. Will never forget these Saturday afternoons watching the great Welsh team of the 70s: Phil Bennet, Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams, and so many others.
I was a player back in the glory days of Phil, it was always on the edge of seat stuff when he got the ball, always expecting him to show the magic in his boots and marvel at his sidestep, I was never disappointed. Phil could sidestep you in a phone box and not even touch you. There will never ever be another man like Phil as a fly half, he was the greatest of them all.some are still trying to emulate him, but fail miserably. Phil Bennett was a legend, and still is to me. RIP Phil Bennett 😢😢🙏🙏
Had the pleasure of meeting Phil in Belfast airport after a Scarlets game....they say you should never meet your heroes...on this occasion they were very wrong what a gentleman
P B was in the British Lions team which came to South Africa in 1974 . I still say that this was one of the finest rugby teams to ever take to the field and Phil Bennett was an absolute master when he got the ball. Very sad to hear of his passing .
Absolute joy he brought to all who watched him. A man of tremendous natural ability and he made maximum use of it all. RIP Sir Phil Bennett. Much loved by all.
Very sad but uplifting at the same time. It’s the first I heard he passed away this year and have much emotion / sentiment running through me watching this video. I grew up in his heyday of the best rugby ever and played a bit myself. I loved watching this Welsh team and all the other amazing players he had around him. Rest in peace dear great one, his soft Welsh eloquent voice resonates a lot 🔥🙏
This took me back to the Internationals at the old Cardiff Arms Park, watching possibly the best team in the World where so many outstanding players came together, the best pack, the best half-backs, the best centres and wings, and of course not forgetting the best full back. Wonderful memories, thank you Phill and now enjoy playing on that Heavenly turf..
Even though an English supporter I always loved Phil Bennett, exciting to watch - that side step, acceleration from a standing start and goal kicking abilities. Wonderful partnership with Gareth Edwards. Great player in a great side.
Ill go a bit further. He was the best of his era. Would have made any All Black Team, it was a pleasure to see such a talented player play for Wales and the Lions.
Didn't even know twinkle toes Phil passed away. What a legend! I remember in 71' when the Lions side came to New Zealand I thought the ABs' would beat them with ease. But that didn't happen, we ended up losing the test series to the Lions for the first time. They out played us with great running rugby. Even our provincial sides got a hiding. They just kicked our Butts. They taught us a lesson on how to play running rugby. I was only 15 at the time, I think the whole rugby community were stunned.
A truly fantastic era for Welsh Rugby, right through the 70s..running rugby you say, correct!! It's the way to play the game, ball in hand & play as a team, the All Blacks took it to another level to be honest..the greatest game on earth🏉👍🏼🏴🇳🇿
The Man,the Rugby, the National Anthem, and that fantastic song!...The Welsh fans and Rugby fans all over world were privileged if they got to see this man play!!
Phil Bennett's greatest achievement was to completely fill the void left by 'King' Barry John's retirement. Edwards/John and Edwards/Bennett were the two greatest half back partnerships in the history of the game - and in 100 years time that will probably still be the case. Lovely tribute to a rugby immortal.
Phil Bennet was one of the best flyhalfs to ever play for Wales and the LIons. Two highlights stand out for me, Bennett starting that great try for Barbarians in 1973 near the goalline and in South Africa 2nd test 1974 where he virtually jinked and sidestepped through entire Bok team to score.
Wales had a Fantastic Team in those days Phil Bennett the equivalent of George Best jinkiin selling dummies he was pure magic an absolute treat to watch.
so many Phil Bennett moments from an All Black perspective the one that sticks in my mind is Llanelli v All Blacks on the Cententary tour in 1980. Phil remonstrated to the ref to NOT send off Graeme Higginson AB Lock for "aggressive rucking" lest it ruin the occasion...what a gentleman and legend. RIP Phil
I missed the news of the great man's death, so this is really sad to learn now. A truly great player in that period of Welsh dominance, but one who stood out even among such exalted teammates as Edwards, JPR Williams, JJ Williams, Davies, Dawes etc. He was a joy to watch even while taking your team apart (I'm English), and a great ambassador for club and country. I offer my heartfelt condolences (albeit belatedly) to all his family and friends.

I have followed rugby since 1955 when I began playing at school. He is one of the best I have seen in all that time. I would not want to rate him against some of his contemporay compatriots - JPR, JJ, and others of that era, also from other countries. Different positions give different opportunities to show individual brilliance. Additionally it is a different game nowadays. Sheer weight and power is more important. Win at all costs..... I felt it was better when "and if we lose it matters not, if we but gain a friend"
@@mariuspretorius5468 Well there were five of them, more or less in a row, weren't there? Cliff Morgan, David Watkins, Barry John, Phil Bennett, Jiffy Davies. All utterly brilliant and it is invidious to split them. For me, I think I would have to vote for Barry John if forced to do so, as the "best" of the great Welsh Outside Halves of the amateur era, simply because he so often ran with the ball in both hands and used a gentle swerve, rather than the far more spectacular Bennett sidestep, to avoid prospective tacklers. But I think I would credit Bennett as the most complete Rugby-player out of the quintet because A. He showed exemplary place kicking from the start, whereas John developed that later on and B. Bennett could, and would willingly, and did, play positions other than fly-half if that was asked of him.
Lovely tribute. Even in Hervey Bay, Australia, four years ago you can guess what try was brought out to start of all things an Australian book review???
One of the greatest, and a true rugby genius. He was the maswr, the maestro, the magician who could conjure a try out of the same thin air into which he would make the opposition disappear. Diolch, Benny. Gorffwys mewn heddwch.

Heck of a player, he will be sadly missed. RIP from New Zealand
A kiwi here. I recall him when I was just a kid. One of the greatest to have played the game.
I was fortunate enough to see Phil Bennet play in his prime - a very special talent!
RIP from Connacht ☘️
The greatest number 10 in the world. R.I. P Phil Bennet.
Simply one of the greatest of all time, how I wish he was playing in his prime for Wales today, RIP legend.

As an Irishman in my late sixties, Phill Bennet was one of my Rugby hero's. Today he would be classed as a Ronaldo on the Rugby pitch.
A very humble proper gentleman who was a ‘GENIUS’ . R.I.P our Benny.

Like quicksilver. That little kick of the heels and feint he had. What a genius of a player.
It’s very sad to hear the great man has passed away Phil had the best side step of the seventies and he will be missed
An exceptional player and gentlemen. It was an honour to watch him play here in New Zealand💖💖💖

Wonderful insightful player, eye for a gap and soft hands and a true gent!
Legend , from an English rugby fan in his 60s, loved watching him play.
Phil Bennett, a Legend ,Diolch ! R. I. P. Phil ❤🏉
I'm a new Zealander and as a kid, never really liked rugby. Thought it was boring. Until i saw Phil Bennet play.

One of the greats of the golden age of rugby union ..Small in stature but a giant of the game .
No-one could side-step like Phil Bennett.
As a young boy, growing up in Cardiff, it seemed that Wales were invincible. Such an amazing group coming together at the same time.
Wasn't Phil Bennett perhaps the best number ten ever to play the game? Great respect from South Africa.
One man who was a constant thorn in the All Blacks thigh, a man we respected on and off the field, he is one of World Rugby's GOAT. Rest easy buddy.

Class act thanks for the magic god bless
That Scottish try was superhuman..beats a few fends off a forward in his own 25 then finishes it off!! What a player!!
Even though an English supporter I always loved Phil Bennett, exciting to watch - that side step, acceleration from a standing start and goal kicking abilities. Wonderful partnership with Gareth Edwards. Great player in a great side.
Just one of the best to ever do it. I'm English but this man had so much class on the pitch. Pace. Sidestep. Kicking. He was amazing.
The best number 10 in history

You're very welcome Ray. It was a pleasure making this making dedicated to a true great man on the field and in person :)
Hommage à ce très grand joueur de Rugby....Chapeau l'artiste !

Saw him play in NZ. Awesome sidestep.

And on top of all that, he could bat more than just a little, and was amongst the better wicketkeepers in South Wales.
@@markcheckley3715 I am not a follower of cricket, but I am pleased you posted that.

Wonderful how he doesn't get caught with the ball passes exactly when the opponent is in position to tackle him and doesn't take on the extra guy
I still cry thinking Phil is no longer with us.
I'm half Chinese and half English and I still think Phil Bennet was one of the greatest fly halfs that's ever played.
Legend of a man and a behemoth in the sport. Llanelli and wales should have more statues commemorating it’s past heroes.
