I was hoping you could interview a resident there. I'm curious, before the tunnel, how did they get the goods and services they needed? If they were cut off from the rest of their surroundings, do they have a different accent or vocabulary? Do they have any other unique customs beyond bear gallbladders? Are they connected to the modern world in every other way? What did they do for hospitals? Do they keep animals? Do they have access to fishing?
I love your content because it's the first time I am able to see the unusual, lesser-known parts of everyday Japan. I would love to hear more about the different aspects of life in these unique locations. Your ability to bring such amazing insights to the English-speaking world, not through the interaction of a foreigner, but as a Japanese person interacting with fellow citizens, is priceless!

chatgpt said - The hidden town in Akita, Japan, you’re referring to might be Kamikoani Village. This village is known for its remoteness and traditional way of life. Here are answers to your questions based on historical and cultural context:
      1. **Goods and Services Before the Tunnel**:
Before the tunnel was built, residents of such remote villages typically relied on mountain paths and narrow roads to connect with nearby towns. They used horses and later, motor vehicles, to transport goods. During winter, when roads were often impassable due to heavy snow, villagers relied on stockpiling supplies and self-sufficiency. Barter systems and community cooperation were also essential.
      2. **Accent or Vocabulary**:
Remote villages often develop distinct dialects and vocabulary due to isolation. Kamikoani and similar villages likely have unique linguistic features compared to standard Japanese. These differences can include specific terms, pronunciation variations, and idiomatic expressions.
      3. **Unique Customs**:
Beyond traditional practices like hunting for bear gallbladders, remote villages in Akita may have unique customs related to festivals, food preservation, and seasonal activities. For example, they might have distinctive rituals for agricultural festivals or unique methods of preserving food through fermentation.
      4. **Connection to the Modern World**:
Despite their remoteness, villages like Kamikoani are increasingly connected to the modern world. Internet access, satellite communication, and improved transportation infrastructure have made it easier for residents to stay connected. However, cultural preservation efforts ensure that traditional practices and knowledge are maintained.
      5. **Hospitals**:
In the past, medical services in remote villages were limited. Residents relied on traditional medicine and local healers. For serious medical needs, they had to travel to larger towns or cities, which could be challenging, especially in bad weather. Nowadays, mobile clinics and improved transportation have made healthcare more accessible.
      6. **Keeping Animals**:
Yes, villagers often keep animals such as chickens, pigs, and cattle. These animals are crucial for their livelihood, providing meat, eggs, milk, and labor for farming.
      7. **Fishing Access**:
If the village is near a river or lake, fishing would be an essential part of their diet and culture. Freshwater fish would complement their agricultural produce and hunting efforts. In areas further from water bodies, fishing might be less common, with more reliance on hunting and farming.
Overall, while modernization has reached many remote areas, the blend of old and new creates a unique cultural tapestry in villages like Kamikoani.

It would be so cool if some day you could buy a house in a place like this that you can fix up, so you can have your own quiet little spot to go home to when you get weary of traveling for a while. If you could save up and buy it outright, and install a solar system, you could have a dependable home base for very low monthly recurring cost. Or maybe that just me, projecting my dreams onto you. Anyway, good luck.

That was one stunning view when you got out of that tunnel. I guess they wanted the ambulance and caregivers to have easier access. I think this village will have a lot of old people and that's why the tunnel. I guess.
Thus in this hidden village, there wasn't anything like a small cafe or pub or something like that? Did it have a small temple? Just trying to see similarities with how the old villages were in the old days in my country. Every village had a small church and a small pub or cafe next to it. So I wonder if it's the same with old Japanese villages. Especially this one, since it's so hidden and all.

It's all about perspective: the tunnel can be scary or beautiful. The village is stunning (I grew up around mountains and love them). I can't imagine getting halfway through the tunnel in a vehicle, another car coming in the opposite direction, and then one of you having to back out. Thanks for the bit of history! It sounds like there are plenty of bears in Japan and that the hunting is therefore done responsibly, in balance (for protection or food but not to annihilate them - the US could learn from this considering the damage to wild species the cattle industry there has done).

I'm in a village up north from there and there are some similarities, including the bear warnings (one sighted recently about 500m from my house). No hunters around, unfortunately. Nature is taking over because farmers keep retiring or passing away, so every year it gets more wild. A kamoshika ran up our driveway recently, and I saw two of them on a hill about 30m from me last week. No one ever saw those ten years ago. Around here maybe 1/6 houses are abandoned and another 1/3 will be in another 10 years. 30 years from now it will be a ghost town, full of bears and other hungry wild animals.

I hope you get to your goal as soon as possible. We pray for you.
I lived in Japan for 4 years,
1 year in Tokyo and the rest in Sitamaken
I explored most of Japan but there are so many places I wish to visit before my time was over.

Do you think the people who live there are happy that tourists want to see it? Thank you for sharing it

I’m living in Akita now which is probably how this got in my recommended feed. This seems like a really interesting place to check out! I imagine it would be near impossible to reach without a car, though. Hope I can visit before it’s time to return home

I hope you find a good true home sooner than later but you truly are living a life plenty others would envy despite the hardships. Many people would rather get to roam than be stuck where they are. I hope the home you eventually find doesn't make you miss the road more. Or you might just have to keep letting us tour with you. XD

That looks like a great place for you to live. Maybe you could make a series of videos about life there, and do some chores or work for people.

Another cool video. Finally somebody found Hidden Leaf village :D The tunnel wasn't that scarry. Without lights would be different story. What camera are you using to shoot your videos? From the shadow looked like a phone.

The village was so cool to see. Seems very peaceful and quiet. No outside noise like how it is in the city !

Remember your fortune, if you study you’ll have luck. Keep telling us more history its my favorite part of your videos, especially how you link it to anime; not a lot of people in the west know that some of their favorite anime/manga stories have historical roots! By not a lot of people I mean me 😂
