I agree, Steve. He wasn't what you'd call a "shredder", but neither was George Harrison, for instance. Both knew how to come up with cool, catchy riffs, and play their parts to fit the song, rather than showboating.

Midnight Special producer to the Kinks, you HAVE to play You Really Got Me. The Kinks to the producer, we hate that song but fine, we'll get it over as fast as possible!
I have a bunch of Kinks albums on vinyl.....yes, showing my age..... My favorite album from them is called Low Budget from the 1970s. I still play the hell out of it. If you've never heard it, might I suggest you listen to it!!!! It is a very raw not over produced album with lots of cool distorted guitar tracks and even some cool disco sounds and beats, which was that time and era of music. Some of the songs on that album were hits on the radio back then!!! A great album and a great time for music in the 1970s!!!😊
I saw them in the early 80's, 82 ish, I was like 13. I went with a couple buddies to Madison Square Garden in New York. I remember being on the floor in front of the stage and there was a middle-aged Jewish guy wearing a suit and a Yamika standing up with his arms around 2 beautiful girls one on each side smoking a joint. It didn't get any weirder than that for me as a kid. Pot was something us kids smoked and tried to hide from our parents. 😂

What a great cover of the Van Halen song! (Don't get mad. It's Ray Davies own joke!)
They also covered Van Halen's Where Have All The Good Times Gone..

Which was a cover of the Mott instrumental.😉
