How to decoupage a jar from scratch with paper napkins

  • This is my first video!
    A how to guide for decoupage onto a glass preserving jar.
    You will need:
    Paper napkins
    Chalk Paint
    Sand paper
    Water
    Home made Mod Podge (see below)
    Cling film
    Paint sponge and brush
    Clear water based spray varnish or brush on varnish.

    I love this, what a beautiful jar! I have several old jars waiting for something like this to be done to them!
    The Birds & Cherries napkin was a perfect choice!
    I was searching for a good tutorial and I found a great one!

    OMG BEAUTIFUL. Love this. Quick suggestion. If you dip your fingers a bit in the Mod Podge and rub the corner of the napkin you can pull them right apart. Happy crafting. 😊

      Hi and thank you. The spray varnish is available at hardware stores. Here in NZ I get it from Bunnings. Whatever brand you use just make sure it is water based, as oil based varnish will turn yellow over time.

      Hi, thanks for watching. I didn't cover the text fully. Just a little bit. It's still visible. Maybe it doesn't show up well in the video, but does in reality.

    When I use my sponge dabber it leaves so many paint bubbles. I don't see anyone else having that problem. Idk why I do

      Sometimes it can happen. When it happens to me I go over the surface with a dry sponge dabber and that seems to smooth the bubbles out.

    Use a wet wipe, works much better than sandpaper.

      Do you mean to prepare the jar? A wet wipe won't help the paint adhere to the glass.

      I used to sell them myself but as I don't anymore there is a great company called Whimmel which ships worldwide. They have a huge selection.

      It will seal your work with a few coats but I wouldn't recommend it for anything that may get wet or if you sell your work. I prefer to go over things with varnish.

    Lovely work. I just CANT seem to avoid bubbles and creases. Depresses me. Help.

      Hi Zaineb, try using a little less glue. Creases are inevitable but if you don't over do the glue you can usually push them flat with your fingernail over the cling film. Or you could try pushing them flat with the back of a teaspoon. I hope this helps. Remember, it's homemade and imperfections are part of the beauty of homemade. 😊

    Is it waterproof and washable

      Inside is waterproof as it is glass. I recommend wiping the outside with a damp cloth if it gets dirty for some reason.

      Hi Pamela, I guess you can't really see in the video but the writing still shows through the napkins when you see it in person. Also, I like to clean it all off as I often don't decide on my final design until I'm sitting there tearing up the papers.

      Hi, the recipe is in my description. It is 1 cup of PVA glue (white craft glue) with 1/3 cup of water. Mix together. So simple. 😊😊😊
