    This is genuinely insane!
SteamOS is something I'd seriously consider using for gaming on a desktop PC and if Valve ported it over properly with full support, I'd say it'd do well. Reviewers might even start using this instead of Windows for benchmarking as it might have FPS benefits on the desktop side compared to the deck (which was shown with the FPS difference between the windows drivers and the SteamOS OS) which is great for everyone.

Microsoft cares for the community a ton, they own a huge array of game studios, games, they support consoles almost a decade old with NEW RELEASES AND UPDATES that can be played with current Gen consoles.

@@raycert07 You can actually have conversations with people on steam forums. Yes they're lazy about their games nobody said they're perfect but their platform is great for gamers. They don't steal your data unlike Microsoft. I've never used Linux so I cannot decide if it's better or not lol. Consoles suck big time no matter which one. Steam gives us sales unlike that trash company called Nintendo, their store is full of bloat and everything is overpriced. It has no reviews or forum. So steam is better. Steams sales are GARBAGE compared to epic.
I got horizon zero dawn, a 60$ game for like 18.50 on epic.
The issue with steam forums is that their mod marketplace is private and you can't download mods for other platforms like epic or gog or anything.

It should theoretically work on Intel GPUs too due to their open support of Wayland and its GBM backend. NVIDIA should publish their drivers as OSS just like AMD does with AMDVLK and leave out some proprietary bits if necessary. I think that AMD does the same thing with AMDVLK where they're using LLVM instead of their proprietary compiler

The Nvidia driver being closed source has nothing to do with performance.
The closed source drivers perform much better than the open ones.
Open source has nothing to do with anything.
All it means is that someone could modify the source code to change functionality, which does not effect the end user that would be using the driver from Nvidia.
Open source does not mean better performance, it does not mean more stability, it does not mean anything except the source code is public and people can change it to their likes if wanted

    • @CoilWhine
      @CoilWhine  2 года назад +3

@@raycert07 Their closed source drivers run better _because_ the open source drivers have to reverse engineer everything. If nvidia was more open then things might work a bit better.
While open source does not equal better performance, it does mean more eyes on the software itself which is always a good thing.
If the drivers were open sourced perhaps we could have more features added that Nvidia doesn't want us to have. Right now SteamOS won't work right on an nvidia card because of the way Gamescope works. Nvidia cards just don't have the driver support to mesh with it despite the cards being more than capable.
Also having the drivers built into the linux kernel is much, much more convenient. As of right now I just plug an AMD card in and make sure my software is up to date. That's it, it just works.
If nvidia wants to keep things closed source then they need to step it up and give the linux community more love. The community is willing to do it themselves, but we can't do much with the closed source drivers.

So now that this thing has been out for a few months, how would it compare to a 10-year old PC running an i5-3570K, GTX 660 ti, 8 GB RAM, and 2 TB platter HDD? Seems like people are saying the GPU is less powerful than a GTX 1050, and userbenchmark says the GTX 660 ti is slightly faster than the 1050. Am I really to believe that this thing is weaker than my 10 year old PC? I mean I know it's a handheld, but damn.....

    • @raycert07
      @raycert07 2 года назад

      Yes. It's slower.
About as powerful as a 1030 iirc.
Which is half as fast at a 1050.
It does not matter how old your pc is if if it beats something currently in production.
It's not possible to make a handheld that draws as much power and performs better than a older mid range pc.
You would need at least 150 watts for the whole system.
The steam deck uses I think 35 watts max, and usually uses 15 in games.
The cpu in your system probably draws 120 watts, your gpu probably draws 120 watts, your already way above what the steam deck power draw is there.
The goal is low power draw for decent performance for a low resolution.

    • @raycert07

      Steam os supports Nvidia.
Nvidia drivers are built Into the Linux kernel.
Nvidia supports Linux, very well in fact. Even having the Nvidia control panel.
The only thing Nvidia does not do is make their drivers open source.
Software does not need to be open source just because your operating system is open source. It does not work like that.
The open source Nvidia drivers the community made are absolutely garbage and can't do a thing.
The normal Nvidia drivers are great and work very well.
There is no reason Nvidia should make the source open because it wouldn't benefit the end users performance.

@@softwarelivre2389 that won't happen. And Nvidia isn't unsupported in linux.
      Linux performance is great.
Wanna know what I think is happening with amd? Their windows drivers have sucked forever because the people working on them came over from Intels gpu division (no joke) and those bad drivers have been holding back the performance.
When the drivers are open source on linux the community eventually makes the drivers good doing the job that the devs are supposed to, letting you fully utilize the gpu gaining performance Over windows.
It's not that the linux drivers are good per se, it's that the windows ones are bad. They need someone to actually work on them, get them functional. Nvidia has their driver situation perfect. They don't need community to make them because they hire qualified people to do it.
