That's gtrat! Thanks for all the time and research you put into your vids. Can you do one on the Cayman convertible vs the Boxster, both the S and non S versions? Especially the 987 and 986 boxster. I don't understand the difference between the Boxster and Cayman.
RCZ-R owner here, owned mine from new, no real issues to speak of, though there are some specific issues to the R and some common issues across the range to be careful of. Brake calipers. These along with the 308 GTi 270 suffer the same issue, the pistons are mild steel so will over time rust, this causes them to stick and can cause excessive disc and pad wear, a relatively cheap fix is to replace the pistons with a stainless item, costs a couple of hundred quid, or send off for a full refurb for around £4-500. HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump). This is common across the 1.6thp range, its pot luck when they go, seen some go as little as 20k miles, others have done well over 100k miles with no issues. Dealer will charge you the best part of £800 for one, maybe cheaper from BMW (as its a BMW part) or Citroen. Reconditioned units are available for around a third of the price of a new one. Timing chain and tensioner. Another common issue across the 1.6thp range, one of two things you should never do if you get this problem is replace just the tensioner and never buy the cheap chinese kits. Original spec PSA or a kit recommended by a specialist are what you want to go for, you should always replace the full kit because the tensioner may be only a part of the problem as the guides may break down, hence you replace the lot. Will set you back £900-1000 from a dealer, £4-500 from a good specialist. Electronics. Not really a problem, the bulbs in the rear high level brake light can go, about £200 frim a dealer (the only place to get one really, avoid breakers yards for this part, they charge nearly the same for a part that could be as old as your car). Window regulator, not that common, dealers charge around £200 for a new one, oem for £50-60. Boot pops open when unlocking the car or opening the door. Another easy fix, caused by water ingress in the switch, either replace the switch or remove some interior trim, clean and use some wd40. Service parts. Brake Discs. Yes they are expensive, Peugeot want £1200 for the pair and £400 for the pads, good news is that they should last 50000 miles and that aftermarket pads are available for considerably less. Shop around, the discs can be had for £800ish for the Alcons, you cannot get them direct from Alcon though, so don"t waste your time. Tarox and Godspeed do cheaper replacement parts, £1000 for the Tarox and around £850 for Godspeed's. Sparkplugs. This 1.6thp 270 unit must be maintained to a high standard, skimp on the maintenance and you will have problems. Luckily its not that expensive compared to some cars out there, the spark plugs though, are replaced at every service, they add about £60-70 to the cost, the exact ones are only available from Peugeot. Other service items. The gearbox/diff oil is classed as "sealed for life", its not, that is just car manufacturers for you, its another cheap job, even from a dealer who will charge you £45-60 usually. Oil. You must use the correct spec and weight oil, don't skimp here either, abd do regular manual oil level checks, the 1.6thp is known to drink oil, if you rely on the electronic level indicator then expect the chance of big bills, mainly timing tensioners failing. Overall, the vast majority of owners love their R's, they are usually pampered but they will be getting to the stage where the odd ropey one pops up now and again, watch out for the cars that started life off as track cars, there were several companies running these as driver training vehicles. Standard tyres were Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 2's, a decent spec tyre will be between £140-170 a corner, don"t buy cheap and get the tracking done every year as these are set quite agressively and can wear on the inside edge if not checked.
Really helpful summary! I definitely need to have a go in one of these one day, have you had a chance to trackday yours? I’d be interested to hear about how well they get on!

Little engine cars can produce a lot of power with a decent turbo. The more the power is used will cause the engine to have a short life. I drive a luxury saloon with a decent engine, superchargers and 380bhp. This is a car can not to be driven at full tilt very often, not because the car can't take it but because you can't drive on today's roads and stay alive for long. There is always something faster, always an idiot trying to push
I think we’re spoiled on cars, I think all cars are underrated for speed, a 0-60 in 6 seconds feels quick when you’re in it, not seat pinning but I think people but too much emphasis on speed over fun, a sub 4 0-60 is cool to show off but I’d rather have handling
Yeah with you there for sure - there are some very cool cars out there that provide amazing driving experiences without necessarily having to be rapid!
As a 981 Cayman S owner, if the 987 gets half the attention mine gets then I couldn't put it on any "underrated" list...I'll shut up about the GS eventually but that's definitely underrated (except by me...I probably drag the average "ratedness" up quite a lot ☺). Definitely agreed on the NC MX-5 though and, as a Pug fanboy, I'd love an RCZ-R if I could just find one. Also agreed on the fun > fast analysis on the GT86. For example, an F13 M6 is stupid fast and entirely not fun. Drove that between the GS and 981 so it's probably not a bad car, but using those for perspective it's awful. Edit XKR is great but you have to budget well over £1000 a year on tyres and have a big pool of cash in case it goes wrong. I briefly considered one.
Haha that’s the thing - I don’t think a 987 would get any attention whatsoever, but I think it’s a beaut still - the RCZ-R is definitely my top pick from this, such a decent offering considering, especially that interior, the seats are nuts!
@@CarsWithJB I didn't think a 981 would get much attention but I can't park outside Screwfix without someone giving me a wave and a thumbs up ☺ The RCZ-R is just so sexy...
15k for these cars is a lot!! I recently bought a vectra 2007 V6 Turbo Petrol 250BHP for a £1000 as a daily which would keep up with most of these also I would like to add I'm 23 and it's only £60 a month to insure
I personally I don't recommend any used petrol cars with Turbos and superchargers one Turbos go , they can ruin an Engine , you cant blow up something your car does not have
I'm looking to get a Boxster once I pass (driving lessons cancelled due to lockdown) and am just wondering, what made you choose the Cayman over the Boxster? Thanks.
Brera: £3000 for A TIMING CHAIN? WHAT????? The hell, is it gold plated or something? RC-Z: Very pretty car. XKR: Late ones are brutal, not recommended for amateurs. XK probably make you feel less on edge.
The RCZ seems to get a lot of love, but I personally hate the damn things. If you drive one (and not just look at one). you will understand why people call them an ALDI TT. The GT86 is a nice car let down by it's wheezy engine, low rent interior, and I wasn't that impressed with the handling either. The Volvo is a brave pill, the ALFA is beautiful inside & out, but not much of a performer. Quite like the Scirocco, decent quality. The Cayman would be my choice, superb in every way. Mate, you're dreaming if you think a 370Z can live with a Caterham on a trackday !!! Maybe a superb driver in the Nissan against a real novice in the Caterham, yes but like for like, not a chance. The Merc is a nice cruiser, too heavy to have fun in though. Jag is not that quick for the power output it has.
A while ago you did a vid of upgrading your polo seats I have the same polo and realy want to do the same could you give me some hellp please on where to search mabye I've looked everywhere I can think of
No worries mate I’m getting a z4 35i Manual soon when lockdowns lifted turning it into a track weapon/summer cruiser going to fit the gt3 kit more powerful turbo etc. You’ll be more than welcome to use it in any vids if you want when I get it. Should hope to have it fully useable by summer next year.

@@CarsWithJB I didn't think a 981 would get much attention but I can't park outside Screwfix without someone giving me a wave and a thumbs up ☺
The RCZ-R is just so sexy...
Always wondered why they don’t make MX5 with a turbo
What? Because the whole point is the free revving naturally aspirated engine!!!
Nice video man.. My choice would be the 370z in convertible (think looks better), and the mx5..
Both very fair choices! I’d probably have the Scirocco or the RCZ-R for the rarity
Some good picks, Alfa Romeo gt would also be a nice pick
Very fair shout!
This is y I subbed to u😍👍🏻
Haha cheers boss!
Nice video, gave it the 👍
I loved my RCZ!
One thing, could you speak more slowly!
I'd throw the Audi S1 in there as well. Good choice for 15k, hugely tuneable and very few cars this size with AWD
Handling? Clutch goes by 60,000 miles
15k for these cars is a lot!! I recently bought a vectra 2007 V6 Turbo Petrol 250BHP for a £1000 as a daily which would keep up with most of these also I would like to add I'm 23 and it's only £60 a month to insure
Not bad on insurance at all - done well!
10:53 was that an automatic one 🤢 surely was in America that one
Noooo don't drive the Brera prices up😭😂nah brilliant video mate, loved every option on here. Keep up the good work my man🙌
Haha honestly I need to buy one then drive the prices up - rookie mistake calling out underrated beauts!
I also love Saabs and Volvos and Abarf
But Profer Saabs so would you say it's be Abarth 124 Spider
C30 t5 is even better value now they are under 10k for the facelift ones
Can you do a top 5 or top 10 coupes under £5k pls😁😁 (im thinking of getting a Hyundai coupe so maybe that would feature😉)
I think alfa 159 should be there, best looking saloon ever
I personally I don't recommend any used petrol cars with Turbos and superchargers
one Turbos go , they can ruin an Engine , you cant blow up something your car does not have
I’m 18 and getting a 4K quote for a 1.2 polo lol any ideas on how to bring this down ?
Add parents/relatives to the policy. Takes the price down quite a lot
As above - I actually made a video on how to reduce quotes which is worth a watch!
Audi TT RS?
Another fair shout - maybe I just rate it too highly!
987 for the win - maybe this has convinced me 🤭
Get a post-facelift S to minimise bore scoring then lemme drive it for a video 👀
I'm looking to get a Boxster once I pass (driving lessons cancelled due to lockdown) and am just wondering, what made you choose the Cayman over the Boxster? Thanks.
@@TheAstroWitchLux For me it's just a matter of aesthetics, I prefer the look of the cayman more than the boxster really!
Brera: £3000 for A TIMING CHAIN? WHAT?????
The hell, is it gold plated or something?
RC-Z: Very pretty car.
XKR: Late ones are brutal, not recommended for amateurs. XK probably make you feel less on edge.
Always thought that Peugeot was a fine looking car.
Honestly I respect it bro
Update: Earliest I could book my theory was 21st may. that should (hopefully) allow me to pass practical by 21 may 2022
Yeah you should definitely be able to get practical done in that time!
The Cayman still looks good
Agreed - and it’s already starting to get better with age
Ayy I'm not excessively late for once *_Yes._*
My G
A while ago you did a vid of upgrading your polo seats I have the same polo and realy want to do the same could you give me some hellp please on where to search mabye I've looked everywhere I can think of
I just spent forever on ebay until a set popped up! They do seem to be getting rarer though unfortunately
@@CarsWithJB thankyou anyways
Should have had the BMW Z4 35is, just under £15k and a lot nicer than most of these and faster
That’s a very fair shout too - not one I thought of while making the vid!
The jag is my fav
I do like it 👀
I had an Rcz for 4 years. Very problematic car. Watch out for the high pressure fuel pump. They always go...
I heard about this - is it the same across all models?
@@CarsWithJB Yes it's a common fault for all models. Great looking car, but fraught with so many engine and electrical faults. Way to many to list. Avoid them if you like to save money.
Depends on who you are when you say underrated
Agree 100%!
Congrats on the sponsor bro
Cheers Tom! Great to have interest 🤙🏽
u should work with carwow
If the bmw e46 m3 isn’t on here then you’re just wrong
E46 M3 is not underrated lol
Maybe I rate the E46 too highly!
SLK AMG is hella uncomfy
Shut ya mout blud
I've got one. You're talking shite mate. More GT than sports car I'd say, it's like a steel fist in a velvet glove. 360bhp, hand built V8, 2006, 43k mile FSH and mint, paid £15k last January, it's a keeper.
@@Pufferkusser I hope you talk about your mail order wife with the same level of passion bruh
LOl, is that the best you can do? My wife is Scottish as am I, been together for years and years. I venture your wife is a box of tissues! @@maxparsons4513
correct, but the car is rather mind blowing!
Eyyyy smashing video as always, some shit boxes on here too 😂
Haha cheers as always Jubair!
Jaguars are cheap to insurer bc they spend most of the time in the garage 🤣
Haha simple as that!
Not if you use them and don’t cheat on maintenance 🙂
...says the guy that hasn't owned one
@@lyndonstachoski3897 I have 3......
I don't see JB replying to any comments, weird...
👋🏽 just took me a while to get around to it!
@@CarsWithJB all good broski, hope you're well and I'm eager on the next supercar video update, love the insight and I wish you the best in that regard.
@@mozubzy4103 appreciate it man! It’s coming slowly, just trying to get my priorities in order and working out whether house buying is gunna happen soon 👀
You cant beat the Audi tt for good value with cracking performance.
Wouldn’t really call 15k cheap
You can get older models for much cheaper 🙂 A 15 or 10 year old car could be under £7k, it all just depends. There are Mercedes, Mazda and BMW for 2k to 5k from 2003 to 2008.
You say cheap cars but 15k is not cheap to many people its very expensive.
For what you're getting it's cheap
Getting famous off of comments day 273, so I can live the dream, live every day like it’s your last🤙🚀🤙
May be cheap to insure, but this dude needs to highlight the cost of the road tax. All well and good paying £10k a car if you’re gonna pay £630 in tax per year alone. That’s why they’re cheap
I geanlly do think the Fiat 500 as a bloke is under rated as it's "a girl car"
1.45 before it actually starts. The more money they make the longer the intro
I agree with a lot but the Volvo C30 is ugly af
Ah I actually really like the exterior! Interior is clapped IMO tho
BMW 235i.
Cant you slow down, sounds interesting but talk slower thanks
sorry but the original mk3 mx5 is easily the ugliest mk5 in my opinion
Yeah I think pre facelift and 1st facelift are clapped but the final edition was pretty nice IMO
Hey gus don t abbo just couse somone is saing it to you
E92 m3?
