- An instructional video on how to replace the automatic transmission fluid, filter and pan gasket on a Toyota Camry with a V6 engine.
Procedure is similar to many other cars that use a transmission filter (and not just a screen).
The fluid is drained via 10mm hex bolt, then 17 10mm bolts are removed to drop the pan. The filter is held in by 3 10mm bolts.
Keep the work area clean, as this can quickly become a messy job. A drain and fill of the transmission fluid will replace 1/3rd of the transmission fluid, as the rest is inside the torque converter. Frequent drain and fills over a period of time are recommended to keep the transmission oil fresh and clean. A fluid flush through the cooler lines is not recommended for older vehicles, due to the possibility of clogging a passage with debris.
The fluid was brown after an unknown amount of miles, and the filter had some small particles on its screen. The magnets were full of a magnetic sludge.
Once everything was cleaned it was reinstalled to 69in-lb of torque, and the drain bolt to 36 lb-ft of torque.
The transmission was refilled with Castrol Domestic ATF, which is Dextron III compatible.
Trans on our 99 LE was slipping just a little, and a smart mechanic friend said don't/ DO NOT flush and replace all the fluid because it will be toast after that in most cases; instead he recommended this partial fluid change shown here, +add a can of TRANS-X. I did that and have not experienced any problem since. Another product that got good results in case of slipping is PROLONG treatment added to a '93 Town Car. I had used Lucas and it didn't change anything, added PROLONG and it stopped slipping immediately. ~cris
PS: Use gloves to avoide soaking crap in your pores, and if you have compress-air, and air ratchet speeds up the removal of all those bolts; just, putting them back in, do that mostly by hand so you don't over-tighten. Good video, smooth and clear!

One thing I find very tricky with fresh fluid is actually seeing the level on the dipstick, so a good idea is to take note of the level before you change the fluid and carefully measure what is drained out. Then put just short of that much back in (say 100-200 mls) and finalise the amount once warmed up and driven a bit.
Why when it's hot? Is it more beneficial than cold? I would have thought cold has less variables (less sloshing around)

had the mechanic do this on my 06 Avalon xls. used a wix filter and gasket. used amsoil atf, and had him install a derale inline filter on the return line from the radiator. last part was probably overkill, but was cheap enough.

I simply used a 10mm socket on my 6" extension and had no problems accessing all of the pan bolts.

Thank you for showing us how good, clean, and like new the transmission and the filter in Camry. Most dealer only do drain and refill, even the service manual only say drain and refill every 60k for T-IV and 100k miles for WS.

@@speedkar99 Bought an Astro van in 2010, junked it a couple years ago, and the interstate battery lasted the whole time and I killed it many times leaving the lights on.
8 years ago I put an Interstate in my sister's car and it's still going strong.
Like a numbnuts, I left the keys in the ignition of my Toyotand and killed my battery the other day; charged it and now it's doing fine- an Interstate.

great video. i changed the oil and replaced the engine strut mount on my 2006 v4 camry. was going to do the transmission service myself even though the fluid is still good but after seeing this video...im not confident ...new transmission is 3k im not messing with it.great video though

Question: To drop the pan some of those 17(ea) 10mm head bolts are located in a EXTREMELY hard place to get a wrench or socket on to especially the 2 upper left corner bolts. What method/tool did you use to get those bolts in the corner off the valve body?

I have read several articles that said to use a gasket OR gasket sealer, but not both. And you are much better off using a real gasket.
If you use gasket sealer, the next time you try to remove the transmission pan, you will have a real wrestling match on your hands! 🤼♀
Eric The Car Guy has a video where he removed a transmission pan that had no gasket, just gasket sealer. He had to scrape off every little bit of that old gasket sealer with a razor blade, and it was just the most unpleasant chore.

I just have an 10-200 inch-pound torque wrench. Think I can just hand tighten the drain bolt till it's snug and have it be ok?
You did a good job, but you shouldn't move your car out of ramps with a dry transmission there was no fluid in it. that can damage it.

I would say it would have been IMPOSSIBLE to drive the car without fluid in the transmission.
Trust me it's a Toyota I drove mine with a dry transmission for 16 miles and it survived so driving it off that ramp it's a joke for that solara😁

@@speedkar99 yeah , these extra tools and toys are nice these days . Back in my day . 70’s and 80’s things were a lot different, actually I’d go back to a 70’s world in a second if given the chance.
That filter was just as clean as the new one, change the fluid & everything will be fine.

@@speedkar99 thank you the reason why I ask is because my plastic gear on the speed sensor broke off inside the transmission and I don't know if I should be driving the car like that.
The filter on these vehicles is just a metal screen. You should be able to get away with just doing a drain 2 or 3 consecutive times (maybe more) between filter changes.
Note that you might need to replace the "crush" washer. Some gasket kits come with them.

It wouldn't hurt to put it, just make sure they're strong enough to stick to the pan when filled with fluid, and they won't just float up and get trapped in the tranny.

+speedkar99 Oh wait, actually, I was asking about the drain bolt that you said needed to have 36-ft-lb of torque at 4:13. If you convert 36-ft-lb to in-lb, it is 432-in-lb of torque when tightening the drain bolt. Since my wrench only goes up to 200-in-lb, I think I'll have to just tighten the bold until it's snug. That should be ok, right?
Yes and no. I snugged my Lexus ES330's drain bolt with my 3/8" ratchet once and it still leaked. It really needed some tightening to get it to stop leaking. If yours still leaks then don't be afraid to give it another 1/8 turn.

No drain on the diff. Should be same as my 1mz in the video

+Kevin Lucas I didn't know Aisin had their own brand of fluid, but they did make the tranny so it might work. You can also get fluid from dealer.

Only use Toyota OEM recommended traproperly. for your car if you want it to last and work propery.

So I’m changing the trans fluid , filter and oil change tomorrow . These cars can last a long time easy , just change the fluids every few years. Some American cars I’d be scared to after so many miles but not Japanese cars.

I have the same exact solara and it has an issue with the transmission, The car drives fine cold but when it gets up to running/optimal temperature the transmission doesn’t want to shift out of first/2nd gear, I was told maybe dropping the fluid and replacing the filter and fluid could remedy the issue.
Should I be looking at the valve body for any issues or solenoids?

Have you replaced the fluid and filter? Start with the cheaper fixes first...then look at the more expensive valve bodies....or a used transmission

somepeople are draining from pipe of trans cooler and fill and running engine until clean fluid comes out from trans cooler pipe. is it correct? Also you backed off on empty transmission, is it correct?

+Dinh Nguyen mine is 1999. The 09 is very different, the tranny doesn't have a dip stick. Follow my Sealed transmission fluid replacement video for tips on that.

Hey, great video but you should edit it to tell people not to use break cleaner on anything because it corrodes rubber and there are rubber seals inside automatic transmissions.
I wouldn't use brake cleaner IN the transmission. Just apply it on a cloth to the bare gasket surfaces and you should be fine.

Hi! thanks for the instructive video. But I noticed 2 things one you reversed your car on the ground with no trasmission oil in the pam. Wouldn't that cause future damage while doing it in each interval? 2 I saw the RMP when you took it for spin that was reaching a bit hight soon after you shifted in parking very quck between the gears. jimesh patel First do a few drain and fill with regular transmission fluid to clean out what dirty fluid you've got in there. Drive a hundred miles or so in between and repeat. I personally don't recommend additives in a transmission. The 4 cylinder Camry has a different transmission than the V6, however the procedure is very similar.

Hey, i have an 06 camry 3.0 v6. I just recently got underneath the vehicle to see what im working with. It looks like part of the bolts holding the trans pan are blocked by a shaft connected to steering i believe. Any ideas on that?
No, on the 06 it would be blocked by the subframe. You need to unbolt the tranny mount and jack it up

speedkar99, I have seen a few of your videos, I love them! Here's a question on video, did you use any gasket sealant on the gasket? From the video, it appears the original gasket came with a gasket sealant, you were scrapped it off with a screw driver. Would the new gasket leak prematurely because there was no gasket sealant?
Thanks. I did not use sealant. The original pan gasket residue was from the gasket breaking apart itself, not from sealant. As long as you torque all the bolts to spec it should not leak. Mine has been fine for almost a year now.

Very similar. Just find out if you have a separate drain or fill port for the differential fluid.
What transmission is it ?

The one in your Camry is a 5 speed auto and is more similar to the video I did on the Lexus ES330:

To access the filter you will need to support the engine and remove the transmission mount to get to the bolts holding under the subframe. In my opinion, it's not worth the effort if your keeping up with the fluid changes frequently.
I understand about the mess replacing the filter & fluid. The car has over 273 km without fluid replacement.
I am not interest in similar. Nor would I like to see someone say are about the same. It is like showing the work on a Honda and you are working & need to know on a Lexus. Locations, part, sizes & torques are not the same.
I just don't see 2004 Camry V6 3.0L repairs much on RUclips.
So you are saying these engines are the same (your 2005 Lexus ES330 and 2005 Camry V6 3.0L)?

You won't find your specific year make model and engine on RUclips, but theres tons of videos that show the same procedure on the same transmission. The transmission in your Camry is same U151E transmission used in the Solara, Sienna, Highlander, RX330, Avalon, Rav4 and of course the ES330 in my video.
And the 3MZ is the same engine as the VVTi 1MZ with a longer piston stroke.

I think your engine is the 3.3L 3MZ-FE and your transmission is U151E 5 speed. Start there and buy OEM fluid.

Juan Manuel Martínez Thanks for the feedback! I don't have an oil pan video, but the manual calls for the 10 bolts and 2 nuts to be torqued to 69 in-lb or 8 N-m. Use seal packing Toyota Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent - no gasket.
Do you always replace filter and pan gasket, can you just change the transmission fluid? My is up for a interval change for the fluid, nothing is leaking, but since start driving it five years ago, i don't record the filter was ever changed.
By the way, in the video the old filter looks like it is made out of metal alloy, why do you replace a metal plate? It just looks the one you putting in.

Daniel Chen The filter screen is inside the metal housing, not easy to see.
If your transmission is working fine and not leaking then do a simple drain and fill to keep the fluid fresh. Change the filter every 100-150K miles or so.

+zofa300 Sure you can attempt to clean it but in the process you don't want to leave any contaminants in there so its easier to just change it. This is a closed filter and not a screen that you can reuse like in newer Toyota's.

Thanks for the great video man! I did this very job on my 1994 camry with the a541e transmission last week. Used the Wix filter and gasket kit, torqued all bolts as specified by the manual (and your video), and refilled the transmission. Car hasn't been driven yet, was sitting on the lift overnight and the next day there was a large leak under the car. Despite having torqued the pan as specified, the fluid was leaking out between the gasket and the pan along the entire back edge. Didn't want to redo the job, so I just tightened all the bolts over specified torque by hand and cleaned everything. Car still hasn't been driven, as I'm doing brakes. Do you think the factory torque could be inadequate? I hate to gum up the entire pan mating surface with something like permatex black if I don't have to. Pan doesn't seem to be warped, but who knows.
Factory specs seemed to work fine for me, are you torqing in inch pounds or Newton's?

Torquing to spec is important but what's more important is doing so in a zig-zag pattern working from the center out
Always torque in cross hatch pattern so pan is snugged down evenly.
what ftlb torque do you use for the transmission filter bolts?
+Anthony P I didnt torque them with a wrench, since they're the same size as the own bolts, I'd assume its about the same torque value, you can always look it up in the shop manual, but I don't think its critical since its not a sealed surface.
