There are, fortunately, some powerful live performances of her Over The Rainbow rendition. Her MLK tribute of this song in the red dress at the Kennedy center in ‘84 was a great Patti extravaganza. A joyous sanctuary. But regardless, her voice has always been mediocre. It didn’t matter what genre or song she was singing. Patti's voice was big and piercing but it was not a beautiful voice. It was sharp, often pitchy and often all over the place, though she had great rhythm and timing and when the spirit took her it was immense. The overall quality of voice was average. And her phrasing was poor and the voice agility was just average, and her tone was quite ugly. In all honesty her voice is made for big venues and rock styles. Her operatic head notes were insane and unmatched as was her belting and going from belt straight into head voice in the same note, which only she can do so effortlessly.
