Jim Ryan tone deftly wanted to make a bunch of live service games because he thought that's what the market wanted. He was 'like oh we'll just pivot and make another Fortnight and that way we will make a bunch of money".

No ill feeling towards Jim Ryan, but it seems like a lot of his decisions are why I'm no longer interested in PlayStation despite being a HUGE fan the generation before. The cutting of Japan Studios and other AA games was one of the reasons I loved PlayStation. I loved their cinematic games but the ones this gen don't really do anything different and feel meh without much gameplay innovations or new art styles. The lineup feels less diverse than before. I'm not surprised Helldivers 2 is received well since the first one was one of PlayStation's AA offerings. The whole jump to live service just makes me completely disinterested.

It still doesn’t make sense to me this notion that 99 failures is worth it if at least 1 really hits because even epic games wasn’t immune to to just sit back and take losses because of all that Fortnite money to be their safety net so what are the odds of having a live service that somehow makes just as much if not more than Fortnite to help offset failures? These “gambles” don’t make any sense.

What pisses me off about this statement is that it is basically the producers saying they don't care about the quality of the game and just want to make money at all costs. It reeks of entitlement and wanting to use consumers as banks and charity cases. A lot of these live service games feel like quick cash grabs with little care of what value they are giving to the consumer.

The story is that Haven pitched three games to Sony and Sony said it wanted to fund all three. Haven chose to make the Fairgame Dollar because it was the most concrete idea at that moment. Sony seems to have paid special attention to Haven because they are also creating a lot of cloud tech/tools that supposedly all the other studios will benefit in the near furture (tools that will help to develop games, not specifically games that will run directly from the cloud)
Kind of funny that everyone is sure that the game will fail when it will probably be the only game to go head to head with the Pay Day franchise, which has a relatively active audience. It wouldn't be surprising to see this game become a hit precisely because Pay Day 3 was a flop.

Literally last 3 years. Isn’t that make more sense to judge how successful ps5 or not, when we know how much units is sold and how many or little first party games and 2nd/3rd party console exclusives there will be by the end of this generation?

I love Helldivers 2, but I'm kind of afraid the effect of its success might have on the industry. With the latest live service games being flops it kinda seemed like maybe, just maybe, publishers were starting to realize it's a lot harder to make a good live service game than they thought and maybe greenlighting every live service pitch that comes across their desk isn't the way to go. Then here comes Helldivers 2 being awesome to screw it all up. Execs will say, "see people do like live service games," while ignoring all the things that make Helldivers 2 an exception not a rule. I mean if you look at Helldivers 2 on a surface level it looks like any other live service game. They'll ignore the fact that even though the gameplay can be repetitive, somehow it never feels like it's so repatative that it becomes boring. They'll ignore the fact that while there are microtransactions, they're not overbearing. They'll ignore the fact that while there are battle passes you can go without them and still enjoy the game. They'll ignore the fact the microtransaction currency can be earned just by playing the game to where you never have to spend money if you don't want to. Might take you longer to get the next battle pass or might night depending on how much time you have to game. I will say, I do wonder how long that'll be financially viable for Arrowhead Games. That said, if I decide to spend some real money on getting a battle pass I won't feel icky about it. I have a limited amount of time to game. Basically weekends and maybe a couple hours twice a week. I've already got 74 hours in the game putting it in my top 12 hours played in steam and I didn't purchase the game until a month after it released because I don't like multiplayer games. Yet another thing other execs will probably ignore. I've played with plenty of randoms and asked them how often they play multiplayer games and they say never or not for a long time.

Estimates say the split for Helldivers 2 between PC and PS5 is around 50/50, it is not more successful on PC, as far as we know. I also think that just blatantly saying fairgames costs 100 mil and last of us online another 100 mil is a bit wild to state as a true, assumed fact. I dont disagree with the overall point of the video but it sounds weird to me to listen to wrong/imprecise stuff stated as facts.

I'm speaking purely from a "you didn't stop the merger" perspective; whether that was a realistic ask or not, as the head at the time, it was expected that he more successfully raised issue with their direct competitor's takeover of their company's yearly best seller. So the merger certainly didn't help

The gaming industry is moving in the exact same trajectory as the movie industry. Live service (like tv) will dominate the landscape once game streaming is refined enough. Like with movies, new ip's cost a lot to release and present a big gamble for risk/reward which is why remakes and remasters have come in such big numbers. Whether gaming will crash is all a matter of timing, can technology improve at a rate fast enough for game streaming to be available globally before people completely tire if playing the same game in its 20th iteration..

"How could you cancel a game like that? I sounds awesome!"

Couldn't agree more Luke. In a different but also relevant subject I had enough with the vast majority of the gaming companies which push the games out of the door incomplete or with serious bugs or with downgraded graphics or low frames. Unless a serious regulation comes in place, a governmental body which actually checks the game's quality and the gaming hrs to reflect on the game's pre order price, I am not pre ordering ANY games anymore , no matter how many stupid little perks they throw me in the deal. I mean it, I won't pre order ANY game at all. They are ripping off the customers big time and the proof is that given 2-4 weeks time after the release day, they will drop the price anything between 15%-40% depending on the sales margins as well. Hopefully if other fans follow that then the companies might start taking seriously the matter to check the game's quality and make sure the right price is tagged depending on the quality gaming hours as well.

Jim Ryan was specifically brought on to transition from PS4 to PS5.He was brought on to globalise Playstation and restructure SIE as you saw with the adoption of PS studios labelling and 3rd party partnerships being stronger than ever. There's this narrative that Shawn layden pioneered the PS4 gen when he was only Head of North American division and the studios and the the time had high costs with luckily paid off in the end but we now see AAA budgets are too big all because the have to go bigger than the last one, Layden always mentions this these days coz he knows.Santa Monica studios despite their success released only one game during that era, Days gone took 6/7 years to develop and we saw how it turned out, there's countless other examples from other branches but the point is Playstation always had this problem coming, and the selfish gamers who want a repeat of the PS4 gen when all we got was singleplayers are being ignorant.A mix of live service/multiplayers and single players is the standard and for me Jim Ryan correctly set up a plan for that.

I'm seeing a lot of people scared of PlayStations future because of the success of Helldiver's 2 but I think we don't need to be so worried.
Yes Helldiver's 2 has been extremely successful but Suicide Squad and Skull Bones were both dead on arrival and have been so VERY poorly received that the success of one game won't likely just make them think it's safe to make everything like that especially since they're obviously aware that no one actually wants these nor is anyone asking for them.
Add to this the fact that they've already said that they're scaling back the live service push, only moving forward with about half the games they had planned and even cancelling Naughty Dogs Last of Us online game as well as Insomniacs Spiderman online game, and I think it's clear as day to us as well as the people at Sony that live service is by NO MEANS a guaranteed money maker.

Live service is worst type of game, and to sacrifice their bread and butter, amazing singleplayer games, for live service trash?? I knew this will end badly. Every showcase they had has been utter garbage. They haven’t shown ONE good AAA singleplayer game. And they are stupid, even if they now return to singleplayer, they will make another, spiderman, god of war, tlou, horizon… I’m tired of these titles, I want something new. They did something new with Days Gone and even tho it was a rocky start, the game ended up selling millions of copies. And it was one of my personal favorites. It felt like the old sony, releasing new amazing singleplayer ip’s from new studios. Aaaaand they canceled Days Gone 2…. The gaming is dying. There are literally no new and exciting games. Rockstar, From Soft and CDPR are only studios which games I’m genuinely excited to buy. And that’s maybe one game in 3 years on average if we’re lucky…

Hey heres a thought, why not double down on what made you successful and start bringing out more smaller games? Crazy idea I know lol. I only have to look to from software, a dlc for 40-50 freedomm units and people say they would even spend 100🦅. If you value your customer, they are really more understandable, and i hope the investors understood that and see the value in making people happy.

Jim Ryan is the worst in his position for a long time. A lot of people simply didn't recognize all the negatives he brought. Just mentioning all the price increases for absolutely everything. I never believed the retirement story. This guy is a coward not standing to his mistakes and devs have to pay for him now. Guess the official story is just a service to him for his long time at PS. I don't even believe that they put the same money into live service as into single player games. That's why we have nearly no real PS5 exclusives until now. They try to fill this gap - created by Ryan - with buying third party games and more and more remakes/remasters. Good for PS is, that the hardcore fans really believe the remakes make sense and have a reason to exist.
So Luke's theory is not really something special...

Change my mind, but I dont think a Last of us multiplayer would have been a hit at all because Last of us fans love the IP for different reasons + its probably not that interesting for players who arent even Last of us fans. A Spiderman multiplayer is the only thing I could imagine beeing successfull out of all the cancelled live service games Ive heard about because the franchise is beloved and has fans outside of the Sony ecosystem.
They should have used their time and money to double down on great single player games and if they actually thought this wouldnt make them enough money --> just release these games way earlier on Pc and not 2-3 years later and your good.

For what it's worth, Ryan made Playstation lots of profits. Under his regimen, things got pricier and more streamlined. Which, of course didn't sit well with the consumer.
But, if you look at games like spider man 2, it costing upwards 300 million, which isn't a live service game.
Should point out the obvious here, it's a new Gen, and with that sequels to those ps4 games, they are only going to go up as advances keep coming.
You mentioned helldivers 2 as the only success, yet it's to my understanding, the only live service that's currently out from that list.
Okay maybe gt7 and MLB the show which of course are doing well.
Also a lot of the layoffs were bound to happen as well, I mean during covid when everyone was in lockdown and affected the market with digital spending, made these companies in my opinion over hire, now that things aren't so focused on gaming and people for the most part have returned to their normal lives you see them rethinking their strategies and cutting the fat where necessary. Cold, I know, but such is the nature of this business.
Now, if spider man 2 cost them 300 million to make, what do you think some of their other games will cost. Sony raised the bar and, in doing so, have created this problem, so it's not just about the decision to making live service games.
I am of the mindset that, the last of us online would have been successful, in my opinion they could have off loaded that work to a different team with one or two ND execs overseeing said project.
To me, a bigger waste of time and resources are things like psvr and limiting certain games to a single or duo platform. I always said that if Sony were dead serious about their Gaas initiatives, then they need to put their(I mean those games) games wherever fornite and minecraft is.
    Good stuff though
