  • Veronica Fernandez, PhD, is a developmental psychologist and research scientist at the University of Miami. Her research focuses on understanding and improving the quality of interactions and early learning experiences for children.
    She uses inquiry and play as mechanisms to promote equity for cultural and linguistically diverse children, families, and teachers. Most importantly, she is the mommy of a curious and spunky bilingual toddler - so she is putting her research into practice every day.

    Where are the studies about multi languages not causing speech delay?

    Awesome! I’m talking to my infant in English and Spanish because I want him to be fluent in both languages.

    If people have trouble understanding what a child is saying due to being bilingual too early breeds problems related to socialization. I prefer my child to learn to socialize well at an early age than speak 2languages early in life

    That is a question I was asking myself. By the way that expert seems extremely charismatic, her voice made me feel warm and comfortable. That is a rare trait and she seems to be born with it 🥰

    These questions have been on my mind for some time. Thank you!! Where can I find the answer her explanation on how to teach/introduce three languages?

    Yes! I'm bilingual and code switch all the time, that's my preferred state of being. There are studies that suggest having different people speak different languages to the child might help them "be less confused" but I think the researchers are the ones confused. What's wrong with code switching and mixing words and grammar, if you're in a social context of people who will understand? Bilingual people should be the ones doing research on bilingual children. Not monolingual eurocentric people.

      I code switch all the time. I speak only in English if my audience are English speaking ones, but speak in more than one languages if my audience understands those languages. I was introduced to 3 languages from infancy and picked up a couple more as I grew older. I sometimes catch myself switching languages on the go per my audience/listener.

      Get on with it. Best thing you can give your child.

      My toddler does that 😂. I think it’s just because he’s more confortable doing sentences in one language because he hears that language a bit more and mix words from the second language. But know he started to differenciate a bit better. It’s very interesting to see his language developpement.

    I only spoke Hmong starting at birth , but then at age 4, English was introduced. I code switch a lot whenever I was missing of a Hmong vocabulary. I speak an 8 tonal language so it is completely different, and the explanation of relatives differs from the American way.

    My 2.5 year old son understands two languages, English and Spanish. He says words here and there, but not two word sentences. What can I do to encourage him speak or say more words?

    • @beatrizg9417
      @beatrizg9417 2 года назад +6

      Read to him in both languages. I read to my toddler in both, we have books in each language and when we communicate, we don’t mix both languages in the same sentence. It’s either one or the other in that moment.
