Brisby is such a unique brand of heroine - she’s utterly terrified through most of what she goes through, it’s apparent that she depended on her husband for a lot, but it doesn’t stop her from fighting tooth and nail through all that fear for her children. ❤️❤️ Frightened Mother is not a character trope you think of when you think “hero” but it’s certainly a realistic one when you look around.
I love her and think she's so inspiring BECAUSE she feels so normal and relatable. She succeeds despite her fears.
Agreed. This is definitly one of the strongest women in fiction. Knowing the risks she faces an owl and a cat, that's like facing a tiger and a dragon for a normal human. Unarmed, no armor, no nothing.
That's my favorite thing about this movie. An ordinary mom is the hero, not because she has any innate special qualities -- in fact, she's textually less intelligent and more fearful than almost all the other characters -- but because she is a mom who is going to fight for her kids no matter what. It's extraordinary.
People think beig a hero is being physically strongs and all that jazz but it's about strength of heart and willinglings to go the mile against all odds plus she's a dedicated mother too
Yes, absolutely. As pointed out by others, she is just a regular mouse and her husband was gifted with great intelligence.
She's in a strange, fascinating, terrifying world but she's driven by the desire to protect her children and she's both brave and tenacious. Mrs. Brisby is a wonderful character
Don Bluth, who was a former Disney animator who quit to make this movie on his own (and brought a lot of other animators with him), stated he felt kids could handle any darkness and intensity as long as the story had a happy ending.
And then proceeded to take that WAYYY too creepily and neurotically over the edge throughout the 80's. (Qv. "Land Before Time".)
Something that the majority of cartoon TV channel producers seem to not understand the concept of these days, it seem...
@@aarroncannon1590 No, The Day TV Cartoons Died wouldn't be until three years later in 1985, when animators suddenly decided their industry was to celebrate their fourth-grade childhoods that led them to take up the profession, make sniggering, immature cartoons for other animators, and complain about how badly Hanna-Barbera toons looked as a kid.
While over at Disney, they were making The Great Mouse Detective. :)
I cant say i entirely disagree with that, alot of movies i enjoyed most as a kid and remembered were darker. Nimh, The Last Unicorn, Coraline, to name a few.
@@ericjanssen394 ooooh the land before time is still one of my favorites lol
This movie is probably the main reason for why I prefer hand-drawn animation over CGI animated movies.
Don bluth was a great Artist he drawn all this himself
to me i would say pretty much all movies don bluth made is big reason to me
@@BeanSparrow well yeah dont forget he drawn them himself one man not many Artist Team like in disney disney even reused the scenes don bluth didnt
@@jasminkrieger8464 Don was an amazing artist and a creative powerhouse, be he absolutely did not do all the art for this movie by himself. He certainly did work on it, but so did his 2 producers (Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy), as well as 8 other people who came with those three from Disney.
This movie is what made me fall in love with animation in general
"This doesn't seem like a dark movie..."
Oh boy. He's in for it.
This was my thought exactly lol.
I actually laughed out loud until I started coughing after hearing that. As the Nostalgia critic once said, "Rated 80's G."
The thing about Mrs Brisby is that she's not some chosen one or anything. She's just a mother trying to protect her kids.
The sequel was a huge contradiction to the first movie since it claimed Timmy was the chosen one xP
"she's not some chosen one or anything."Uhm...have you seen 26:51 - 27:51 🤨?She is *definitely* a"chosen one".Also...who says a mother trying to protect her kids CAN'T be"a chosen one"?The 2 things are not mutually exclusive!X-P
"Yeah this is definitely pretty dark for a kid's movie"
Sir, you are a quarter hour in. You don't know the horrors that await you.
I just don't see why it can't be a kids movie anymore.
@@alissonlares2926 Because society says we have to coddle and protect kids from any and all possible fear/problems until they're 18, then kick them out and make them do adulting.
@@captin3149 oh, good one. It is really a US thing, I can see this happening while living pretty far from there. And does it make sense to you? I am glad I was not treated as a kid if I had some lack of intelligence. Like most kids are today watching Peppa or Dora for example.
@@alissonlares2926 I mean, I sorta see where they're coming from in wanting to protect kids, but in my own opinion, sheltering them from everything actually hurts them, and in some cases I feel makes them incapable of functioning well as adults, but then they become adults with that mindset, and drag us all even further down. The view from a sinking ship is a poignant one....
@@captin3149 so we found out why people are so sensitive nowadays, always crying because of hurt feelings.
You know, a long time ago. I ounce asked Gary Goldman(one of the directors) on Facebook how he and his friends pulled off the glowing eyes effect for the Great Owl and Nicodemus. He said this to me.
We Xeroxed the drawings onto "exciter (glossy black) paper" and carefully cut the eyes out and added pieces of yellow cels taped over the eye holes. Then projected light at about 400% from beneath the camera platen to burn in the eyes to match the action and have that hot look in the eyes, the very glossy black paper held back everything except the eyes. Then we shot the scene again with the exciter papers again with a blur at 60% to get the glow in the eyes. We used the same process for fire effects like the torches the rats carried looking for Nicodemus and the mysterious objects and lights when Mrs. Brisby goes in the rose bush looking for the Rats of NIMH. - Gary Goldman
Man that’s awesome information. That’s the greatness of practical effects.
That’s so cool!! I’ve always wondered how they did that. Thanks for sharing that information ❤️
I have a few suggestions for future reactions:
- The Iron Giant
- The Great Mouse Detective
- Rescuers and Rescuers Down Under
- Klaus
- Over the Moon
- Wolfwalkers
- Meet the Robinsons
- Kung Fu Panda
- Atlantis The Lost Empire
- Shrek
- Megamind
- How to Train Your Dragon
- The Land Before Time
- Robin Hood
Those are pretty good animated movies.
Disney 's Dinosaur.
@@darr12100 YES, PLEASE!!!
Good Suggestions
yes yes yes!!!
I love Disney, but it's great to introduce people to other animated films that are non-Disney as well. There are so many good ones. Some other animations I would recommend would be American Tail, Fern Gully, and the Last Unicorn.
I LOVED An American Tail! 🎤There are no cats in America . . . 🎤 🐭
Last unicorn yes. Thr studio that made that later became studio ghibli
@@tenshi.kurama that makes a lot of sense, loved as a kid and as an adult who loves anime I rewatched it and was like that movie looks like anime
@@Musikchic47 Yes to Last Unicorn! Another one that gets pretty damn dark, has a really unique and gorgeous animation style... and I'll keep mum about the harpy. 😏
Someone once said I reminded them of Justin and I've honestly never received a greater compliment.
That is such a great compliment! I adore Justin
You should watch All Dogs go to Heaven at some point. Never fails to make me cry for several reasons.
"Only humans go to heaven, read the bible"
That poor young girl.
It's really hard to watch now, knowing the abuse and trauma Judith was going through while she was recording for that movie. Her breakdowns were such that the adults in the studio and her agent were alerting the police. it was sad that her mother didn't have the courage for the sake of her daughter.
Got to do a whole Don Bluth run. All Dogs, Land Before Time, Titan AE, certainly An American Tail
Didn't know he also did An American Tail. That makes him hands down one of the greats in animated film history. One of the greats, period.
I remember when Fieval was in Disneyland ! No cats in america 🤣
All Dogs go to Heaven is another dark one, but strangely memorable and likable.
The lights they use that you mentioned loving were actually a big technical achievement. Bluth discovered a way to use light in animation where it actually glowed for the first time in cartoon history. A brilliant animator
This makes me so happy to see! This was a movie I grew up with, and holds a special place in my heart.
This was made during a time when animators actually treated kids like adults, with respect, instead treating them like they're stupid like today.
One of my favorite movies ever ❤️ no idea why it's so underrated, it makes me so sad. None of my friends that are my same age haven't seen it..
True gem is what this is ❤️
R.I.P Dom DeLuise The actor who did the voice for the crow in this movie working along side with Don Bluth.
He also did voices for itchy in all dogs go to heaven.
Fagin in Oliver and Company.
Tiger in an American tail.
Stanley the troll in troll in Central Park.
The dog in Rock a doodle.
He was a staple in my childhood because of the voices he did. What a fantastic actor. R.I.P Dom DeLuise.
Watership Down (1978) is an incredible animated feature, I love it. Really worth a look. It's weird that hardly any reaction channels feature it.
I highly recommend Watership Down, but that one is dark as well, just a word of warning.
The book was based off a soldier's WW2 memories.
@@meredithr9824 you sure about that
Sounds like a great movie to check out. You might need some therapy after this. Maybe some Max and Ruby, or What I Love About You. Anything with rabbits where nothing bad every happens.
Wow, yes!
One of my favorite movies from when I was young (the other being The Last Unicorn)
It was an amazing movie though the boob tree was weird.
Ahhh! Same too! I watched them both so much I practically wore out the tapes! Also "The Land Before Time" was another great one when it came out.
@@Divhreaza yep, I was 2 when that came out, now I'm about to be 35 and I still have my stuffed animal Littlefoot
When looking at the rating system for old movies have to remember the times...kids were tougher then.
Kids have not grown softer: parents have.
@@Sigart You're not wrong.
Eh, people say this but kids movies these days have touched on stuff I've never seen when I was a kid in the late 80's. Stuff that had me chilled and going "Crap, this is supposed to be for kids."
Maybe as an adult things are different and you're wiser about the world. Movies I watched as a kid, like this one, never scared me or had me feeling dread or emotional. More than likely because we just are not mentally developed in that area yet, who knows. I watched my old favorite movies as an adult and wince at some of the absolute horrors that blew right through me when I was kid.
And yeah, there are totally movies out there that are just soft fluff but we had them too in the 80's. I just think that they are not expressing darker themes the same way like they used to. And plus, what was a dark topic to us in the 80's is not necessarily a dark topic to kids 40 years later.
Eh not really. More like every animated movie back then had a G rating slapped on it without the raters fully checking what it's about.
@@Melissa-wx4lu I watched this in the 90s as a kid and loved it
Imho the most beautifully crafted animation movie of all time.
"rated g, can't be THAT dark" hahaha you don't know director Don Bluth. He also made An American Tail and Land Before Time. Land Before Time is probably one of my favorites than the others.
Same as me and American tale I grew up watching those in the 90s
I owned both
I say this with the utmost respect, you are too freaking precious for words. Your child-like wonderment watching these movies always makes me smile. Never change, bro. BTW, Up will make you sob, Hook is one of Robin Williams most underrated performances.
Hook is absolutely a must watch if he hasn’t reacted to it already. It’s tragically underrated I think.
Why was this recommended?
Because it's Don Bluth.
NIMH, An American Tale, We're Back... The man could do no wrong.
"We're Back" wasn't Bluth, it's a Spielberg movie. (Also I'd argue he did a lot of wrong with Troll in Central Park, but I like his highs enough that I'm happy to overlook the lows. XD)
@@TheDragonsong12 I seriously am the only person on this earth who adores A Troll in Central Park -3-
'We're Back' is terrible lol. I agree about the others though
Growing up, we didn't have a lot of the Disney movies available to us and so I watched a lot of non-Disney animated films growing up. This one was definitely my favorite. It was not until I was a little older that I learned that it was based on a book, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by Robert C. O'Brien. The magical elements of the movie were definitely placed in there by Don Bluth and to this day, there is no real explanation as to where the amulet comes from. One of those magical McGuffins I guess. Still love the movie and it remains one of my favorites to this day. Love it so much, I wore out the VHS copy until the film inside snapped and had to buy the Blu Ray afterwards. This movie does not get a lot of exposure and I appreciate you taking the time to watch it today.
Very underrated imo
Would love to see you react to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), The Little Mermaid (1989) and Tarzan (1999)!
Yes to all, especially the first 3!
I don't know which is more tragic of an 00's childhood--
Thinking that Howl's was a GOOD Studio Ghibli movie (just for being the second anime to see in a theater after Spirited Away), or the impression that Spirit and Atlantis were good, period.
Oh, the lost post-90's, pre-Tangled/Ralph generation... :(
don’t be a hater. in my opinion, Howl is a good movie, and Atlantis remains one of the greatest Disney films of all time. why waste your energy being negative to people who are enjoying something?
@@tais1355 If I heard someone say that Twilight was the only book she ever read, I would tell them to read other books.
That's not "hating", that's LITERACY--Especially when it comes to 90's Ghibli and 10's Disney.
@@ericjanssen394 bye troll, your false equivalency argument doesn’t move me 👋🏻
"It does not seem like a dark movie."
Heh.
You should read the book. It is quite good, even for adults. It doesn’t have magic stuff or kid Disney nonsense. It is much more about the story of the intelligent rats themselves.
"This doesn't look that dark of a movie"
Oh honey, it's okay, we're all horribly wrong sometimes
Did anyone else kinda hope that Mrs. Brisby and Justin would end up together in the end? Is it just me??
Looking back, I realize it was probably the first non-canon "ship" that I ever shipped. *LOL*
😂😂Me too. They were so cute together. 👍👍
In the book, and this is heartbreaking, when the Rats left the rosebush to escape the exterminators, they knew that if there were no dead rats in the warren the exterminators would know something was up... after all, rats sleeping in their den during the day, surely some of them would die before they had a chance to try and escape the poison. If none died, that means the rats were aware of what was going to happen and evacuated appropriately. Which is not a thing normal rats would be capable of.
And any rumor of unusually smart rats may cause NIMH to catch wind of their trail at last.
So a dozen of the rats volunteered to stay behind and sacrifice their lives to save the colony.
As the exterminators dug up the warren and pulled out the dead rats they found, Mrs. Frisby could see one of them was unusually large... Brutus, brave loyal Brutus, the guardian of the front gate, and another could well have been kindly Justin, there was a resemblance, but Mrs Frisby was too teared up to look any closer and honestly didn't want to know if it was Justin or not.
@@GuukanKitsune I remember when I read the book thinking the same thing, that one of the rats COULD have been Justin, and I swear I lost sleep over that! But there were sequel novels, and in them it's revealed that Justin survived.
@@Divhreaza I was not aware there were more books, can you give me the titles?
This is a really underrated and amazing Movie. Out of all the old school animated movies of the past, this is one of my favorite. It's so deep, well animated, and full of fantasy, science, adventure and horror elements you rarely see in a movie for kids.
Not underrated by a longshot. It has a 93% rating on rottentomatoes and a 7.6/10 on imdb. Seems highly rated to me.
It really is a gem. Apparently there are plans to make a godawful live action/cg remake in the the style of Alvin and the chipmunks 😞
"It doesn't seem like a dark movie" **laughs maniacally** I'm so glad you got to watch this movie, though! I studied under Don Bluth for a year, and a good amount of our assignments included animating over the dialogue of this movie, and I got to learn a lot about the techniques of drawing Mrs. Brisby. I'm glad it's getting some more love!
I shipped Justin and Mrs. Brisby so hard when I was a kid because that's sort of what I do. When I saw the direct-to-video sequel in a store I lost my tiny child mind and begged for it. Sitting in my little bright green bean bag, legs criss-cross-applesauce, I hit play on the VCR and bounced like a jackrabbit. Then Mrs. Brisby comes on screen and she's a senior citizen and Justin is still young. Oh, how my wee heart broke.
I legit used to watch this every day as a child because when my parents got me a tv for my room, it was the only dvd I owned (for myself). So I just put it in every day 😂
Jenner’s evil grin gave me nightmares as a kid. I finally got over it about 10 years ago.
I loved this movie as a kid! It’s not very accurate to Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of Nimh, the book it was technically based off of, but I actually prefer this movie more than the book. I’m not much of a reader, so that might be biased, but still.
Yeah, it's pretty rare that anyone one-ups the book, but they pulled out all the stops on NIMH. One of my favorite movies ever.
Oh my gosh, you’ve never seen this one? This is one of my favorite films of all time, Don Bluth’s best!
I LOVED this movie as a kid. Don bluth is a legend. This movie has such a atmosphere to it.
Thai and the Great Mouse detective are still two of my favorite movies.
Love your channel btw.
I wonder does anyone else remember (rock a doodle doo) watching this awesome reaction to this movie reminded me of that movie?!
That is one of my favorite Don Bluth movies cause it's just so wild and out there!
There’s so much to love about this movie. But I could see in your eyes one of the things I love the most: there is real terror, fear, and peril in this movie. I appreciated that even as a child, even as it terrified me. Because I saw that the Disney movies of the same era were fluffy in comparison, and never dared to tread into real darkness.
This movie is a classic to everyone who grew up with it, but I can see how watching it for the first time as an adult you can find the characters and story a little hard to get invested in.
Don Bluth had left Disney to form his own animation company and this was their first project. It was a modest box office success, but drew the attention of Steven Spielberg who produced Bluth's next two films, An American Tail and The Land Before Time. (Highly recommend both)
I certainly did in the 90s
I totally agree. That's what I mainly enjoyed about this movie. Was the visuals. Hand drawn animation is so unique and quite nostalgic. Since everything now is computer animated.
The utter sophistication of the animation in this exquisite movie is extraordinary-ordinary! The height of animated storytelling. A banquet for the eyes, music & dialogue riveting the heart! I treasure this film!!
And I KNEW you wouldn’t give it the higher/highest rating. Just had a feeling.
i agree with all you said.. and i think it's part of the unfortunate new generation where "cartoons" are made to be makeshift babysitters. not to be watched with parents as most of us did to understand how potent and magical don bluth movies were. I hate everytime i hear a reactor mention one of these movies as 'dark' or 'not for kids'.. which, yes, not for this generations kids who need everything to be PC clean and safe, but i watched it as a very young child and adored it b/c it was a family event viewing.. and even if i was still too young to understand the complexities of NIMH (as in, medical testing mice), i was still afforded the unique parallel wonder that my parents felt in their own way, while i felt the same from a childs perspective. and now as an adult, i've become the parent able to understand that even deeper layer my parents had. ❤
Fun fact: While "The Secret of NIMH" was Don Bluth's directorial debut, many critics and fans alike agree that it was his magnum opus. It's dark for a children's film but nonetheless a gorgeous work of animation. The glowing eyes/gold, in particular, was a technical feat at the time.
Your reactions to these animated films is so entertaining! I hope you might try reacting to "The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole" if you ever find the time. It's an absolutely gorgeous 3d-animated film about owls fighting in its equally gorgeous fantasy world. Even though it was released in 2010, it still holds up!
This movie used to scare me as a kid, but I still watched it multiple times. But every time I did, it was eerie and chilling.

i watched this film over and over and over again when i was a kid, and i actually rewatched it a few years ago. AND YET. i could not tell you what the plot is. you're 100% right, it's really the visuals that make this film so special
Oh, you have to watch The Iron Giant (1999)! It's a fantastic animated film!
I can’t believe I completely forgot this movie existed. Now I gotta go watch The Last Unicorn, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and Oliver & Company!
Don Bluth's films are notable for their use of light and dark. I hope you had the chance to listen to the song at the end credits - American Tail, Land Before Time, and American Tail 2 have excellent ending songs.

Suggested before but still highly recommend;
The Last Unicorn, Flight of Dragons, Dragonheart (live action film), Secret of Kells - or any of Cartoon Saloon's film or a rather underrated Disney film The Black Cauldron (At the time of its release it did disastrously but personally I've always enjoyed it, it's something of a darker story has some really great visuals and is worth a watch)
I grew up with this film because it came out 7 years before I was born. It gave me appreciation for darker animated films, which I only appreciated more as I got older. I can understand why you weren't super invested in the story and characters since it was pretty straight forward. The focus really is on Mrs. Brisby more than anything, and I connected with her a lot because she is not your normal heroine. I love that she's just a desperate mother who pushes on despite her fears. Atmosphere is of course the main "character" of this film and is a hallmark of a lot of the Don Bluth films. He and his team are so good at creating engaging atmospheres with color and effects. The Land Before Time, Balto, and Titan AE are other favorites of mine from Don Bluth!
Same I was born in 1990 myself
Another great animation around this time is Charlotte’s Web.
one of my sister and me’s slam dunk favorites from when we were kids. we watched it over and over, even though we were born nearly 10 years after it came out
Same as me in 1990
This is an impressive and surprisingly dark Animated Fantasy Adventure film. The music was done by Jerry Goldsmith, whom was considered to compose music for Star Trek 2, but was too busy composing this, Rambo First Blood and Poltergeist. The latter was nominated for an Oscar.
Fun fact: in a later interview Don Bluth explains that Nicodemus is the owl because of the same glowing eyes on both characters which means Nicodemus and the owl are the same being because Nicodemus is a shapeshifter that transformed into an owl
Don Bluth, the animator that wanted to show kids the darkness of the world.
I remember the first time I watched this many years ago. Just as I had finished when my mom came into the room and told me my grandfather had died. I've never watched it since.
Never clicked so fast! Don Bluth at his best! Gorgeous animation! Terrific music! Amazing characters! Seriously, how many movies have mother protagonists, especially in animation?
“Doesn’t seem like a dark movie….” Oh, you sweet summer child💙
Nick: this is rated G, it doesn't seem like a dark movie.
Me: *laughs in childhood trauma*
I loved this movie as a kid! Probably a big part of that was because mice were my favorite animals so this, the great mouse detective, american tail, and the rescuers were all on my favorites list. Also the scene where Aang goes to see Koh the face stealer always reminded me of when Mrs. Brisby goes into the tree to see the owl
This was my favourite movie when I was little. The song she sang to her sick son was so motherly, it was very comforting cause I was sick all the time
it was so special to see someone excited about this movie the way I get excited! Just a masterpiece.
My oldest son is named after Justin in this movie! This is based on the book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" which is a fantastic read... it was required reading when I was in 5th grade. RIP Dom DeLuis.
Some awesome things about this movie: the two oldest Brisby kids…Teresa and Martin…are voiced by Shannen Doherty and Wil Wheaton, Auntie Shrew is voiced by Ellen from Mary Poppins, and Nicodemus is Derek Jacobi.
I used to watch this movie on a regular basis as a kid growing up, still one of my all time favorite movies
I saw this like 9 million times as a kid. Nobody really bought tapes back then so it must have been on HBO. Those channels used to show the same movies constantly in the early days. I did like it a lot because of the mystical elements and I love the voices, particularly Jenner (Paul Shenar). He was actually in SCARFACE and was a really good looking guy. I remember being freaked out when Mrs. Brisby cuts her arm trying to escape the cage. I mean it's super intense, especially if you're a kid, so it really stays with you. Don Bluth did the animated sequence in one of my favorite movies, XANADU. I prefer the old animation and have a hard time getting into Pixar type stuff. If I watch something like MOANA, they look like erasers to me instead of humans. So my brain checks out a little bit.
YESSSSS! Loved these films when I was little. So glad I opened RUclips to see this! Thank you Nick! Your reactions always make my day.
Thank you! Glad you like them!
this was one of my favorite movies as a child! as dark as it was, for some reason I was so intrigued by this story, and yes, the visuals are astonishing.
I'm glad you checked this one out, it's definitely the most adult film Don Bluth has ever done
Don Bluth movies tended to get pretty dark, but MAN were they good! And the animation was amazing! I used to watch this movie so much when I was a kid. This one and "The Last Unicorn" (which I would also highly recommend you watch if you haven't seen it yet.) And then several years later "The Land Before Time" came out and I loved that one too! Kids can actually handle some rather dark content. I think the trick was to make sure there were heartwarming things in it too to help balance it out.
Oh! And I'd also recommend "An American Tale". It's another one by the same studio.
Although it doesn't say so explicitly in the movie, NIMH stands for the very real "National Institute for Mental Health". Just the kind of place one might imagine such experimentation on animals.
Kids shows used to respect their audiences ability to comprehend and take emotional damage... They also expected the children's parents to be there as the kids watched.
Watch the movie called "Watership Down" sometime, if you haven't already.
Damn, I love your reactions. You watch the movies with all of your Heart. Keep going.
Greetings from Dortmund, Germany.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up, mainly because it scared me but it was one of those movies where even though I was scared I just wanted to keep watching. I also read the book in school and loved it so this movie will always hold a special place in my heart. The story concept and the visual are crazy awesome.
40yo and still my all time favorite movie! I too was born in 82; the same year this came out
If you enjoy this movie, its actually based off a book “Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH”! It has three arcs - Mrs Frisby going to the Rats, Nicodemus’s tale, and moving their home.
The movie changed the ending but honestly both the book and the movie are solid in their own right! And the part with NIMH is expanded on a lot more if you’re interested in the Animal Experimentation part! It also explains in much more detail how Johnathon affected the rats and why he’s so highly respected.
From the beginning I was like wait... he’s reacting like the crow! “I love the sparkles!”
It is rated G... but it's a 1980's G. You need to keep that in mind...
The director (Don Bluth) has said "You can show kids anything, as long as it has a happy ending". Many of his movies have a darker element to them. Movies like Land Before Time, An American Tail, and Anastasia.
Lots of things have "Happy Endings" that I would never consider showing a child... lol.
This was a great reaction. Secret Of Nimh is one of my favorites.
i don't think i ever got invested in the story of this movie except when the kids were in danger at the end. the visuals definitely stuck the most! also definitely recommend The Iron Giant, The Road to El Dorado, and Spirited Away
Man, Don Bluth movies were my jam back when I was a kid.
OMG I REMEMBER THIS MOVIE FOR THE LONGEST TIME I JUST NEVER REMEMBERED THE NAME!!!!
I grew up on Don Bluth films in the later 80s, never has a film maker touch and intrigued my imagination so much like he did.
oh man this movie was a horrifying and amazing part of my childhood. i remember being terrified of characters like the owl. but it was also one of my favourite movies.
Have to remember, when this movie came out, Black Cauldron was another four years away, Fox & the Hound was the year before, and early-80's Disney hadn't hit bottom YET.
And already animation fans were rubbing this in Ron Miller's face as "How a Disney movie SHOULD be done", even though it's got all the faults of every other Don Bluth movie since...Except, strangely, that Dom DeLuise actually isn't annoying in this one, and pretty good, in fact.
This is my childhood. I sang the lullabies to my kid
I think you missed some of the point, Nick. Mrs. Brisby is not given over to intelligence like the rats of NIMH, she is heavily reliant on her animal instinct, but she has to overcome it in order to save her family. A normal mouse’s instinct would be, for instance, to drop anything burning hot, like the Stone, but her courage overcomes her animal nature, and this inspired the rats of NIMH who are also struggling to overcome their own animal failings, like relying on stealing. The movie essentially is about overcoming our own failures, whether both of our nature, our emotions, or even our technology and embracing the best parts of all three.
Thanks for explaining, definitely felt like I was missing stuff in this movie!
@@nickflix8657 yeah, honestly it was a good reaction so don’t lose heart! But I think it gets better the more you watch, because you notice things you didn’t before. Don’t think this is me saying you did a bad job, but think about watching it again on your own with that in mind and I think you’ll find more to appreciate though you appreciated the hell out of the animation.
This movie was Goldsmith's first animated feature, and he didn't really know how to compose for an animated film ... so he treated the composing and scoring like that of a live action film. It worked out quite well for this film. Goldsmith would eventually compose the Disney animated film "Mulan."
There are two movies that pretty much exhibit the sheer musical talent of Jerry Goldsmith.
"The Secret of NIMH" and "Runaway."
"The Secret of NIMH" is an example of a Goldsmith score that's done with no synthesizers.
"Runaway" is a Goldsmith score that was performed entirely on synthesizers.
And there are many movies where Goldsmith balanced electronic sounds with symphonic sounds in addition to experimenting with unusual sounds.
As Henry Mancini humorously said of Jerry Goldsmith, he "scares the hell out of us." And, of course, Goldsmith was very good friends with John Williams, with these composers admiring the works of each other.
This is one of the great movies made by Don Bluth. He was a great animated movie maker who made a few movies that competed well with Disney like All Dogs go to heaven and American Tail.
Nick, have you seen 'the land before time' also directed by Don Bluth and produced by Spielberg and Lucas? You probably have, but just in case you haven't, you should! Was my favorite as a kid
Actually haven't but will add it on the list!
Same as me
I had to skip Room because I haven't watched that yet. But I did see its thumbnail, and the expression on your face alone convinced me to move it up the movie queue. Thanks, Dude! Will be getting back to it after watching. 👍
Mrs. Brisby was the last role of Elizabeth Hartman. Tragically, she committed suicide five years after this movie.
This story was actually originally a book. The book is a childhood fav of mine
This movie is similar to the Black cauldron, Rock-a-Doodle and Ferngully. I really like the older cartoon movies. They are soo much better than the new ones.
Legend says that this was the movie that got Steven Spielberg into doing animation.
Other really great Don Bluth films in the must watch category include An American Tale; All Dogs Go to Heaven; Land Before Time; Titan AE.
I have to go watch one of them right now.
