Frollo is without question the most diabolical Disney villain because of how truly real his character is. There have been thousands of Frollos that existed in real life and it makes him all the more terrifying.
He said horrible lies, almost killed a baby, and he is pervert who justify his actions with "religion" says him... You are absolutely right, he is the worst 😖😤
Although, keep in mind, we were getting a little tired of the straw-man sniffy-fey Gov. Ratcliffe "I hate good people!" villains in increasingly corny and melodramatic post-Lion King 90's movies, and bad-Frollo-good-Gypsies may have finally pushed it over the edge. When audiences suddenly and inexplicably raged at '97's "Hercules" the next year, and tried to ride it out of town on a rail, what we may have seen was a delayed reaction. (Yes. They actually hated Hades.)
Hellfire is probably the most shocking song they ever had in any of their animated movies. I mean it's litteraly an old man lusting for a young woman and saying that he want her dead and burning in hell if she dare to reject him. They wouldn't do anything like this nowadays that's for sure.
Disney, no. But a lot of children's shows are more willing to express dangerous topics like this, so I could definitely see something like Hellfire appearing.
Frollo is absolutely the most terrifying Disney villain 💯 He's not a sorcerer or a dragon, just a corrupt man, w/ twisted religious & political power, a dark sexual obsession, and abusive & genocidal behavior. It's scary because it's *real*
I know the ending pissed a lot of people off but I think it was the only responsible way to end it. Frollo saw Esmeralda as a demon, Quasi saw her as an angel, and Pheobus saw her has a woman. If there absolutely had to be a romantic angle, Pheobus made sense.
I agree with you, Quasimodo and Frollo both put Esmeralda on a pedestal. One sees her as a pure angel, coming down from heaven. And even then, his motivations for liking her were flimsy too, it is believable, but a real relationship does not grow out of something like that. Quasi even sings it in his own song, she is beautiful yes, but what made him love her is simply the reason that she was the only woman to ever show kindness to him. It is a beautiful pedestal to stand on... but it still dehumanizes you in a way, turning you into a saint when you are just like him, a flawed human. Frollo also put Esmeralda on a pedestal, a demon, a sinful woman who only he could purify, a witch who he needs to bring on the right path... or kill to prevent her from leading other men astray as she has done with him. Frollo was worse, but both did wrong. Esmeralda was neither a angel nor a witch. She is not responsible for Quasimodo falling for her simply because she treated him like a human being. Nor is she responsible for giving Frollo a boner and him not knowing how to handle this complex emotion that the church branded as evil called 'Lust'. Pheobus was the only one who treated Esmeralda like a woman. He lusted after her, sure. But he never blamed her for his own lust and never expected a relationship out of her. Pheobus sits in the healthy center of the both extremes that are Quasimodo and Frollo.
@Dark Shadow Storm And in the book, Frollo was a Archdeacon not a Judge, we aren't comparing book to movie, it was obvious that Disney wasn't going to translate the book 1 to 1. They didn't do it with Hercules, they didn't with Pocahontas, expecting a different outcome here was stupid.
@Dark Shadow Storm They could have, but they didn't. They instead chose to give Phoebus that role and made him a better guy to fit the mold. And also made a pretty decent message that worshipping a person is not guaranteed to give you their affection. A message that quite a few people could learn from.
@Dark Shadow Storm But it still puts her on a pedestal, which is a wrong thing to do. One can make many arguments, maybe that it really wasn't love what motivated him, just gratitude, which he conflates with love because he never was treated like this, like a human being, even by the person he considered his 'father'. One can argue that he DID love her because he was willing to set aside his own emotions to know he lost and wish the best to her and Pheobus. And maybe in the books Pheobus was similar to Frollo, but definitely not in the movie. Pheobus was attracted by her beauty, yes. But he respected her. He did not think her wicked or anything like that, nor did he force himself on her, he simply tried to help her. So, unless you meant that the book Pheobus was close to Frollo, claiming that Pheobus was similar to Frollo is objectively wrong.
@@sadadokis2709 I read the novel in high school (I'm honestly still not sure how I managed to slog through it!) so unfortunately I wasn't able to enjoy this movie because the ending is just... yyyyyyeah. OTOH, I absolutely agree with the large amount of people who consider Hellfire one of the best villain songs EVER. It's fucking - and I promise this is not an intentional pun - FIRE.
The original Grimm fairy tales that the first several princess movies are based on are dark as FUCK, Disney’s really good at making dark stories family friendly.
@@sadadokis2709 Honestly, they were probably jumping on the Broadway success of Les Misérables, another musical based on a Hugo novel. I'm so glad they did, though. This movie is amazing.
@@kayasaki86 "refuge or safety from pursuit, persecution, or other danger." Back in the old days in a lot of places if you were in trouble with the law, if you got into a church you could claim sanctuary which meant they couldn't drag you out
@@kayasaki86 So there was a tradition that if a cathedral's bishop allowed a fugitive entry, they could claim 'Sanctuary' and as long as they stayed inside the Cathedral (or on the Cathedral grounds) the constables/ police could not arrest them. But, that generally meant a lifetime of living within the church - and only if you took the vows of the Church and became a Priest (if a man) or a Nun (if a woman).
It's lust, not love. That's one of the ironic themes in this. He's singing an entire song about his holiness, while simultaneously confessing to one of the seven deadly sins.
He hates himself that he finds her attractive and wants her. I never knew that and saw that as a kid. I only knew when I became an adult and could see how he looked at her and what he said. But as a kid it went over my head.
I love how when Quasimodo says "you're not like other gypsies, they are evil," Esmeralda, instead of getting angry at him for saying that about her people, simply asks where he heard that from. She's not judging him for thinking that because she understands that he was just misguided by that asshole Frollo. That's what I like about her character.
Frollo is the symbol of people living at that time thinking about ugliness as evil. Still gypises originally in the novel are not a good kind, and based on that background Frollo intentionally “was” good, but later he has lost his way 😢
The ironic sadness about this score is that this is the one Alan Menken Disney score that was nominated for the Oscar, but didn't win. He won Oscars for the scores and songs for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas, but not this.
Hercules was nominated for Best Song with "Go the Distance," but not for Best Score, and didn't win. Now there's the rule that only one song per movie can be nominated; I guess the Academy was sick and tired of Disney winning best score and song Oscars for so long. But Dreamgirls got 3 songs nominated but none of them won, so the new rule is a stupid excuse if you ask me.
@@aleaanderson6600 La La Land had two songs nominated, and one of them even won four years ago. In the 1990's the Academy split the Best Original Score category into two, best drama score, and best comedy/musical score. Pocahontas won in Best Comedy/Musical score, but that was Disney's last Oscar for score. Tarzan and Frozen went on to win for Best Original Song.
It's not over yet! The score a d songs were reworked for the stage - it didn't quite make Broadway - but the songs will again be used in a live action movie.
@@curtismartin2866 Well the reason it never made Broadway is because Broadway refused to allow a show with that big a cast (Because the huge choir necessary for the score counts as the cast), and the producers refused to cut the choir.
The original story is even darker. Disney lightened ip up a lot. In the book, Follo has Esmeralda hanged for a crime he committed and laughs while she dies. Quasimodo sees him laugh and throws him off the cathedral roof. Later he goes to Esmeralda's tomb and lays beside her until he starves to death. 18 months later, someone opens the tomb and finds them both, laying together. When they try to take them apart, they crumble to pieces.
The novel is so far from this version of the movie I don’t see how it matters. *Everyone* dies. Esmeralda, Quasimodo, a poet character who’s an author self-insert, Esmeralda’s surprise mom, Clopin. Frollo. Phoebus lives, but he’s actually a womanizing Gaston type who never even actually cared for her and abandoned her for another woman once she was trapped at the cathedral. The theme isn’t even about fighting oppression, it’s literally that human lives and efforts are futile and short, and that we should just take care to preserve the great monuments that last, like the Notre Dame. (Victor Hugo mostly wrote his book to save the Notre Dame from being torn down back then.) Point is, this book is a completely different story with totally different themes and morals. It isn’t as relevant as people seem to think.
@@nkbujvytcygvujno6006 it matters a lot! While the novel is pretty far from the movie the movie still wouldn’t be here without it. Both movie and book are brilliant in their own right, but the book is still relevant
@@evaflorentia3998 No, you’re right, I do absolutely believe that the book is relevant to the history of the franchise and how its later versions developed since then. I just don’t like how so many people seem to think that since the book ended one way, then the “true story” of the movie has everyone die and fail. It’s like, no, you don’t need to make yourselves miserable. The book’s a totally different story! The _movie’s_ “real story” is just what happened on screen! If you choose to ditch the happy ending, then you’ll have to ditch everything about the rebellion against oppression and fighting for social justice too, because that wasn’t really a theme of the original book either, but no one seems to say that that’s fake. That’s all. I just like reminding people, one may be based off the other, but for all intents and purposes, they’re different stories. Not just the same thing. There’s a difference, you know?
@@nkbujvytcygvujno6006 Esmeralda is also inexplicably naive for having been raised by gypsies and her being one of the few good characters in the book is explained by her actually being French (and the bastard daughter of a nobleman). *Much* prefer the themes and characterizations in the movie.
I love how you're not scared of showing the emotion that the film is creating, whether that be in the form of laughter or tears. It's a perfect representation of the magic of cinema, and also something you don't really see on other movie commentary channels. Great video!
When I was a kid, the gargoyles were the only part of this I somewhat enjoyed. Now that I'm an adult I adore everything about this film outside the gargoyles. It's a masterpiece.
Lol I can see that. As a kid Clopin and Esmeralda were my favorites. didn't like the gargoyles. as an adult, Clopin, Esmeralda and Quasi are my favorites and I despise the gargoyles.
Yep. Never liked them. They really are the weakest link, even though they're supposed to lighten the dark elements. But, why fear the darkness when it's the best part of the story? It's the lesson.
I like the Gargoyles more when you think of them as not actually alive, but Quasi talking to himself and imagining them alive bc he doesn't have friends 😭. The stage version went all in on that interpretation and I think it's better for it. Still, "guy like you" is the weakest part of the film for me.
@@baixiaolang that's how I always like to view them too, especially since they turn to stone whenever anyone else is around. Although the fact that they take an active part in the fighting during the siege at the end does somewhat put a dent in the theory lol.
Apparently the filmmakers kept adding gargoyle gags to Heaven's Light because kids in the test audiences got fidgety. I think the gargoyles could have fit better if they (really, just Hugo) had been toned down or reworked a bit.
Same though! I had such a crush on him growing up! 😅 But, I mean what’s not to love? He has a fantastic singing voice, he’s incredibly creative and artistic, he’s so genuinely kind and caring, plus he looks like he would give amazing hugs! 😊 Sure he’s not conventionally attractive, but the animators did a fantastic job of still giving him big expressive puppy dog eyes that just make me want to wrap him up in the comfiest blankets and make him feel safe and loved. ☺️
As a child even though almost every character called Quasimodo ugly I never thought he was ugly. As I got older I understood why people would see him as ugly but i still didn't think he looked that bad. Oh the innocence of childhood.
33:53 This was the first time ever a child not only approached him, but touched his face, without fear or disgust. A smile of relief that appears on Quasimodo's face melts my heart every time I watch this scene. He deserved a genuine hug from a kid who didn't judged him for his appearance.
When you think about it the gargoyles could be acquainted to Quasis lonely mind and technically there could be no magic in this movie making it one of the most down to earth story the Disney’s come out with.
you can tell they tried to make it in his head, but being a disney film, someone thought they needed to lighten it up a bit by having them be real, I guess.
According to the disney company, they said that this is the most realistic Disney movie they have ever made. The part where frollo held the sword over his head while Esmeralda was holding Quasi and he said “and he shall Smight the wicked and plung them into the fiery pit” Is Probably the most scariest quote from Disney
@@rebecca4680 Ironically, that's the *Second* time his prayer is answered, during Hellfire he asks for Esmeralda's influence on him to be removed, seconds later the guard interrupts to say she is gone and no one can find her
And then Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, the straight to video sequel, completely ruined that!!! One of the worst Disney sequels ever!!! As an adult I have come to truly appreciate Hunchback's 1 ending, just skip Hunchback 2. Hunchback 2 is terrible!!!
@@starlalikesbroadway3268 Yeah there is a sequel and no, don't watch it, the music sucks, the villain sucks, the animation is way less good than the original, definitely one of the lower tier Disney sequel cartoon movies out there. I didn't like Quasimodo not getting Esmerelda as a child but as an adult I now love it. It's a powerful message that you don't need to get the girl and still you can be fulfilled in life. Besides it's other fails the Hunchback sequel give Quasimodo a girl to win, I liked that as a kid, but now I don't and everything else surrounding that main theme also being bad, it wasn't good. I watched the original Hunchback movie many times as a kid but the sequel only once, even as I kid I knew it wasn't that good.
It's like he was rewarded with something BIGGER than having just one human to love him, HE EARNED LOVE AND RESPECT FROM EVERYONE(EXCEPT FROM FROLLONOF COURSE) friendship is also LOVE doesn't have to be romantic which is beyond beautiful to me.
@@matthewmiller9485 But him not getting the girl isn't the message of the movie; it's about being accepted by society regardless of your appearance. How does him getting the girl ruin that?
I want this Disney back. When they had the AUDACITY and BALLS to do something as daring as this. This was their golden age; movies like Treasure Planet, Atlantis and Hunchback are all CRIMINALLY underrated. Such a shame.
one thing i love about this movie is that originally, frollo was a catholic priest but disney didn't want to piss off the church and so they made him a judge...and animators just decided that he would look strikingly like a priest lmao
It's still pretty clear what he's supposed to represent tbh. Catholic church just gotta take the heat for having all them pedos in their ranks. I'm Christian and it disappoints me greatly how Churches would turn a blind eye to evil within their own clergy. The disdain is deserved. 😒
The way that the guards mock Quasimodo saying "all hail the king" reminds me of how the Roman guards mocked Jesus when he was on trial saying the same and beating him
Not only that, there's also the part where Frollo offers the others 20 pieces of silver to betray Esmeralda. Jesus was betrayed by Judas for 30 pieces of silver, and Joseph (an Old Testament Bible character) was betrayed by his brothers for 20 pieces of silver.
@@sassylittleprophet There’s something heartwarming in that fact. Judas betrayed Jesus for 20 pieces of silver, yet the gypsies, who were probably more desperate than Judas was, didn’t betray her for 30 pieces of silver.
@@speedracer2008I think you got the numbers a bit backwards, pal. but yes, it definitely shows the gypsies' moral compass and how they wouldn't betray their own no matter the consequences.
The animation has many more references to the Bible. Quasimodo breaking free of his chains is a tribute to Samson who did something similar. Esmeralda's costume, on the other hand, is red and purple during the performance, wearing Wh*re of Babylon from the Apocalypse in purple and scarlet (probably that's why Frollo saw Satan in her).
I am so happy so many more people are reacting to this underrated masterpiece. The book is darker but this is my favourite Disney movie now when I am older and understand more about the world and how well for example Frollo is such a realistic character. I loved your reaction and I began to cry when I saw tears in your eyes! You are just such a pure person! I love how the movie ended with Quasimodo getting the acceptance from the people of Paris that meant more to him then any romantic love and that he got Esmeralda and Phoebus as friends for life now. My shot analysis on the three mens ''love'' for Esmeralda in the Disney movie! Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda were pure and he saw her as an angel but in the end he let her go since as you said the friendship meant more. Frollo's obession for her turned him mad and he was very sexually repressed and used the power he had to try to own her and he saw her as a temptress and an object he needed to posses. Phoebus loved her for who she was and that is why he was the one to end up with her, he fell inlove with her as a real person and she in turn fell inlove with him!
@@TheBlackLakeSiren I am Talking about the Disney movie not the book! But Frollo Also kissed Esmeralda before running away and giving her the blame for attempting To kill the Captain.

I read the novel in school before seeing the movie. Seeing how Disney was able to give the storyline a bit more cheer and a happy ending really made me tip my hat off to them.
Just have to say, I’m 2 minutes in and I love that you are doing Disney movies. The fact you don’t constantly do jokes or make fun of these amazing animated movies is why I watch you 😂😂 You seem so happy watching them which makes for a better reaction.😊
@ paulbrosfornever Agreed. SO many other reactors just make a bunch of dumb jokes, and miss funny or important moments too. Not only is it annoying, but it makes it very clear they're faking their reactions for easy views and have probably seen the movies already. But this guy seems super genuine! Best I've seen in ages.
I think the older you get, the happier you are with Quasimodo not getting the girl. I think he was the first Disney hero to fall in love and not get the girl. But he proved himself a true friend to Esmeralda by getting over it and showing acceptance and support for her choice, and yet, he is still able to have a happy ending. I guess it's another way to show why he's the hero and Frollo is the villain.
As a subscriber from Hawaii, the voice actress for Moana is a local girl from my island and the movie is very meaningful to Polynesian culture. Coco is also a cultural masterpiece
Dude I gotta say, there were moments with Frollo where you looked legit terrified especially Frollo's song Hellfire. I wanted to ask if you were ok. On another note I've actually performed Frollo's song before and I know that it gave people the very same reaction because of the content and meaning behind it.
This is Disney's darkest movie, but it's a glittery candy-fest compared to the original novel. Victor Hugo was a very dark man. He was obsessed with killing off everyone in sight in his novels. George R.R. Martin probably takes notes from him. Also, one of my favorite things about this movie is that Esmerelda and Quasimodo aren't love interests. She loves him, but as her best friend, not as a lover, like she loves Phoebus. And Quasi never tries to convince her to be with him, never guilts her into being with him because she's nice to him or anything, and he eventually moves on from her and decides to just be happy as her best friend.
Also obsessed with making dang near everyone a vile excuse for a human being. George R.R. Martin is *definitely* taking notes. One of my favorite parts, too! It's an important message.
I think Frollo is always the #1 villain on any Disney list. Gaslighting, abuse, cruelty, racism, violent, and of course murder. Pretty sure I missed some 😩
My favorite song is God Help the Outcast. All those people were praying for themselves, fame, glory... but Esmeralda asks for nothing but for Him to help those less fortunate.
(This information about Hellfire isn't mine): First of all, Frollo doesn't speak or sing to God, or Christ, but to Virgin Mary. Why? Because, in the first scene that Clopin sings about, when the archdeacon points out the statues, Frollo focuses above all in Virgin Mary. Then, a thunder resonantes, and for a very short time (and almost invisible), Virgin Mary opens his eyes and stares at him like saying "You've done a bad thing". Secondlu, the dark blue colour simbolizes good, and Heaven. The red colour, Hell. That is why you see a big Cross above the chimney, but the fire's red light doesn't reach it, it's dark blue. Also, Frollo wants to be "pious" as those cardinals dressed in red, who are judging him. But, as his actions aren't pious, in the end, when he positions himself against the wall, forming a very little cross ( which is very little compared to the shadows of the good cardinals and Saints that ascend to the blue side ) he stays in the red side. The scene when the soldier appears to tell Frollo that Esmeralda is gone. That solider is surrounded by dark blue colour. He's an angel who comes to give him an ultimatum: "leave her and come with me, or continue and you're doomed.
Frollo also addresses Mary specifically because of the association with the cathedral - Notre Dame, which means "Our Lady" (i.e., Mary). In the prologue, the Archdeacon tells Frollo, "But you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes, the very eyes of Notre Dame," visually indicating the cathedral but clearly referencing the *actual* Notre Dame, Mary. Hellfire also features the chorus singing the Confiteor, which a confession of sins that serves as a direct counterpoint to Frollo's denial of guilt for his lustful feelings. Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti - I confess to Almighty God Beatae Mariae semper virgini - to the Blessed Mary ever-virgin Beatae Michaeli archangelo - to Blessed Michael the Archangel Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis - to the holy apostles, all the saints Et tibi pater - and to you, Father Quia peccavi nimis - that I have sinned Cogitatione - in thought Verbo et opere - in word and in deed Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa - through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault Kyrie eleison - Lord, have mercy When it comes to forgiveness, however, there must be more than merely a confession of sins but true repentance. If you make no effort to amend your ways, you're a hypocrite, which is one of Frollo's issues here ("And he saw corruption everywhere / Except within"). Frollo cements his sin with the lines: "God have mercy on her / God have mercy on me / But she will be mine or / She will burn" showing he is clearly aware that he is the one at fault here, but he chooses to go forward with his evil acts anyway.
Some men go to Virgin Mary when they feel lust. I never thought it could be a thing but this year a religious man that wanted to be the president of my country (Peru) said that when he sees a hot woman and feel lust he thinks of Mary and "tells her" she's prettier. Also said he's in love with the Virgin Mary. He's a fckn creep. He got very popular for being an extreme conservative. So glad he lost. He's scary as hell.
I love how open you are with your emotions as you watch. It's really refreshing to see someone be so genuine instead of putting on airs for the camera. Also your horror with regards to Frollo creeping on Esmeralda is super relatable. I've seen this movie a dozen times and I still cringe when he sniffs her hair. Too real, man.
I think the reason I subscribe to this specific reaction channel was because of the emotions he shows. You can tell nick has the ability to care deeply, which is very rare in my opinion. I am glad to have found such a gem 💕

"the hunchback of notre dame" really has some of the most beautiful songs in the entire disney catalogue, plus my absolute favorite joke of all time ("achilles, heel!"). i don't know why it's so underrated, but i'm so happy that you reacted to it! looking forward to more reactions from you!!!!
You did not disappoint with this one! It's really amazing how much darker kids movies were back in the 80s and 90s. Frankly, I really miss this style of animated storytelling that wasn't afraid to lean waaay more heavily into serious tones and emotion. Most Disney renaissance movies did this well, in addition to many of their older classics, plus Don Bluth movies like Secret of NIMH and Land Before Time and Dreamworks' early stuff like Prince of Egypt. As a kid, feeling more genuine fear and sadness in these films felt cathartic, and even necessary. Maybe because the joy in the happy ending felt all the more earned.
I'm beyond grateful this film is a household name now. Back in the day, it was a modest success, but it received mostly mixed reactions for being nothing like what Disney was producing at the time. And I love it for that.
Genuinely becoming my favourite reaction channel! I love your reactions and how you aren’t afraid to let your emotions show. Loving the recent Disney films too!
This is one of my favorite disney movies. And watching your reaction, I felt those emotions again and I cried again. You seem like a really nice guy and I love that you are not ashamed to cry in front of the camera. It is wonderful. I wish I knew you in person.. I am sending love from Poland, my friend :)
I'm so glad you did make that realization. Animation is a unique art form that has an incredible capacity to tell stories that other media might not even be able to. Art and stories are what make the human race so vibrant and interconnected and what better way to exist in that than to create an entire world from the ground up with a pencil and some imagination? I'll never stop watching these masterpieces just because they're not as popular or deemed for children. I think the only solid goal i've ever had in life is to be a part of making these worlds and stories and characters that'll linger in the minds of both adults and children for such a long time. Or, in some cases, even share wisdom that can might actually help someone through a tough time like iroh from avatar did for me when i was younger : ) Sorry this is long-winded and corny, but man art gets me in my feels and im a sucker for disney movies
Alan menken’s music was probably the reason Disney studios is alive today. I don’t know, but if the little mermaid flopped (the 1st of his 6 Disney movies, hunchback is his fifth) the studio may not exist today.
As much as I give the utmost credit and love to Menken's amazing music, I would argue that it was the late great Howard Ashman (the lyricist with whom Menken worked on Little Shop of Horrors, Mermaid, Beast, and half of Aladdin before Ashman's passing from AIDS) who was *FAR* more instrumental in the success of the early Disney Renaissance.
@@HobGungan Absolutely. I think them *combined* were really a power duo that couldn't be matched. If you look at Ashman's lyrics in friend like me, it's insane the words he managed to write, the rhyming even. But Menken is also amazing - look at his work on even Tangled for instance, he's like half the reason disney animation survived and is still standing.
this movie hits me hard as I had a friend in primary school who had a deformed face and was bullied a lot for it. Though I didn't care for what he looked like on the outside because we were very similar eitherway. *Never judge a book by its cover.*
Facts from the original book: Ezmeralda did not even like Quasimodo, she was afraid of him cause of the way he looked but Quasimodo still loved her. Frollo did in fact burn her to death and years later when someone dig up her grave, he noticed another skeletton hugging her and it was Quasimodo. After she died, he could not handle a world without her, so he crawled into her grave and hugged her until he died. I do not remember every detail cause it was years since i read the book, but thats the detail i remember the most.
Also for a future reaction, do Disney's Atlantis the Lost Empire. It's one of Disney's most underrated films that people should see. I really think that you'll like it.
this movie is one of THE BEST Disney movies ever made. the music, the storyline, the characters, the IMAGERY, and the messages of what’s morally right or wrong. if this movie made you cry, I’d DEFINITELY recommend seeing the musical version from La Jolla Playhouse. now THAT WILL PUT YOU IN A PUDDLE OF TEARS.
I like them both in their own right. The musical has more time for development and characterization. I like both frollo’s for the different ways they play the villain. I like movie Quasimodo cuz of his appearance and kindness I like musical Quasimodo for his voice, sign language, and general sassiness. I like Phoebus and esmereldas relationship in both. Have to say I like movie ending better but that’s cuz I’m a sap XD. They both have lots to bring
Hands down THE BEST VILLIAN (IMO) Judge Claude Frollo; in terms of power or magic his weak in comparison to other main villains but the fact that he is just a human with power makes him dangerous and everything he does leaves you with an impact: -The death of Quasimodo’s mother -The terrible parenthood of Quasimodo -Hunting down gypsies -Try to rape Esmeralda -Burn all Paris And of course, his theme song is AWESOME.
I decided to watch this for the first time two months ago and I broke into tears at the end. I didn't expect this movie to be THAT good and filled with social commentary. The music was also gorgeous. I completely relate to your tears haha
Hellfire is definitely one of the darker moments of any animated Disney movie I can think of but it's so good. It's kind of surprising the song even made it into the final cut of the movie but I'm so glad it did.
I can't hardly see your kind warm heart getting tortured by the cruel story. Seeing you tearing actually makes me sadder than watching this movie its own myself.
I think you came to an important realization that many people seem to miss: that Esmeralda's happiness is important to Quasimodo. Maybe because you really seemed to really get Quasi, his personality and what was important to him, even at the first watch.
30:58 That's molten lead used to repair the bells. The reason it doesn't destroy everything is that lead has a low melting point, so it isn't actually as hot as it looks. Though you _would_ get horribly injured if it hit you. The reason that happens is pretty simple. Gargoyles are basically just fancy rainspouts, the lead goes into the water lines and then falls out of the statue's mouth. They were made like that to look good and fit with the styles of the buldings, and because they were believed to scare off evil spirits.
It’s such a good feeling to see someone’s genuine reaction to some great Disney classics. To see your appreciation and reaction to the animation and the score is so pure.
Frollo is my favourite Disney villain of all time, with my favourite song of all time, and Tony Jay just brings the sheer evil in him to life. It's all so insane and mad, but you buy every second of his performance. He convinces you Frollo actually believes what he's saying
I could go on for hours about this movie, it is so visceral. There's just so much symbolism. I'm so glad you're happy with the ending! One of the things I see people complain about is the fact that Quasi doesn't end up with Esmeralda in the end, and they just stay friends. But I honestly think that's part of the point, and part of why the story is so great?? Esmeralda cares for Quasi but she's not interested in him like that, and by the end of the movie Quasi understands and accepts that and cherishes her friendship, the complete opposite of Frollo, who tried to kill her when he realized he couldn't have her. That and even though Quasi and Esmeralda didn't end up together, he still got everything he ever really wanted in the end; a life free of the bell tower, and the acceptance of the people
I can't believe you were never going to originally watch animated movies because your reactions weren't of the norm as you said compared to other reactors. Because you are more focused on the characters and get so wrapped up in their emotional story you don't make jokes or sarcastic funny comments. That's so weird because that is actually why I started watching your reactions because you don't makes tons of jokes but instead are actually taken away by the characters and their journey. Because your reactions are so genuine, honest, and emotionally raw is why I started watching your reactions in particular to begin with. I actually was going to comment about this in your Treasure Planet reaction but thought it would be mean to other reactors who do this. So I didn't say anything about it. Man. The one thing you were afraid of doing because it wasn't conventual was the one reason why I started watching you to begin with. I love reactors who makes funny jokes and all...but after a while it feels tiring. I just want a reactor to care about the characters that I love and enjoy so much. I want a reactor to be actually happy, sad, and scared for the characters without it being fake or just for show for the audience. YOU have actually done this. Your smile is wonderful cause it's real. You pay attention and it shows how invested you are with the story and this shows you actually care about what you are watching. It makes me care about watching your reactions and I end up enjoying watching you react to the story your reacting to. I'm glad you decided to watch animated films. It's really refreshing to see a reactor show real and raw emotion without holding anything back.
In fairness, the way you pronounced it is how the football team pronounces it. This may sound odd, but the childlike purity and sincerity in your reactions is what we love BTW, Lord, did the meaning of "Hellfire" go over my little 8-year-old head at the time
Omg this is one of my all time favorite Disney movies! I remember it not being recieved well because of its darker content but holy crap is it an amazing movie with an amazing cast! The voice of Quasimodo is Tom Hulce who is also Amadeus Mozart in the movie "Amadeus" - he is a fantastic actor and sings with so much passion!
I always liked the detail in the lunch scene of Quasimodo putting out a fancy silver goblet and plate set for Frollo but a wooden set for himself. You know Frollo brought him those to keep in the tower, but instead of bringing two matching sets, he deliberately gave Quasimodo something inferior to use as a subtle, everyday reminder that Quasimodo is a lesser being. It's so insidious.
I swear to you, my friend, I was delighted by your reaction. This is one of Disney's toughest movies, although it is also true that it comes from a very heavy source material. And of course, Frollo is one of the most despicable villains ever put to screen, the interesting thing about the film is how it poses the dilemma of what makes you a man and what makes you a monster. And now, if you stop to think about the issues it deals with ... genocide, lust, racism, intolerance ... Not your typical children's movie! Still, it is a true masterpiece.
Just popping on here to say how much I adore you and your videos! I found your channel yesterday through your Prince of Egypt video. Your reactions are so genuine and full of emotion, it’s refreshing to see a man like you! Beautiful human being! 💛
The Prince of Egypt is another great animated movie. I can't wait to see you react to that. And you should definitely watch The Wizard of Oz at some point! I'm surprised you haven't seen that one!
Fun fact in the novel this movie is based on Frollo was a lot less villainous than he was here he genuinely cared for Quasimodo (also naming him after a day and not his deformity) and willingly took him in after his mother abandoned him (and making him stay in the bell tower was actually to protect him from what people would think of him) in fact he only became the villain halfway through after he started lusting for Esmeralda
This is a pretty great movie one of my Disney top 3 infact, love the music, the story telling and the twists. Esmeralda in my opinion was a great female character, she knew her strengths and weaknesses, and never backed down or caved to the pressure of changing herself, she accepted who she is and is completely fine with that, and she passes on those lessons to Quasi by treating him like a human being.
I saw this in theaters when it came out, and the scene where Quasi saves Esmeralda and pours burning oil down the facade was one of the most amazing animated scenes ever put on film
I really love the "who is the monster and who is the man?" spin on the story Disney did. And yeah, it's a visually really beautiful film at times. Plus a killer soundtrack and great voice performances? If it weren't for the gargoyles, this would be near perfect for what a Disney adaptation could be.
I never watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame as a kid, but I just recently watched it and I’m now 18 years old and DANG! I’m glad I waited til I was older because I never would’ve appreciated this masterpiece as a child.
I wish Disney understood how powerful this movie is, Esmeralda deserves a higher place in the "princess" ranking. She is the ULTIMATE female power character without being forced!
The opening leading up to the title of this movie is such perfection. Circle of Life might be more "epic" but this being more of a real life situation (corrupt official using his power to oppress minority groups vs animals doing human things) makes it so much more emotional.
I love that you let yourself feel what the movie is trying to make you feel, I love that you aren't afraid to cry when a scene makes you emotional! Very wholesome 😊😊😊😊
I have to say, this might be my favorite movie reaction I’ve seen on the internet. Thank you so much for your insights, your reactions, and most importantly thank you for not being afraid to show your true emotions and reactions to the movie. I feel like so many people today are afraid to show those emotions and laugh it off but thank you for staying genuine and sticking up to your feelings. For this, I will be sticking around for a long time. Thanks again. 😊
It's so nice to see someone watch this film for the first time and love it 😊 It's been one of my favourite Disney movies since I was little. Esmerelda is one of the best characters in Disney in my opinion. The fact that when Frollo tries to make her think that Quasi purposely led them to her and she doesn't even think for one second he's telling the truth, she just trusts her friend ❤
Ever since the first time I watched this film Frollo has fascinated me I dont think there is a villian like him in any other disney film 🤔 his evil, dark and haunting.
Frollo is without question the most diabolical Disney villain because of how truly real his character is. There have been thousands of Frollos that existed in real life and it makes him all the more terrifying.
I definitely agree! Some of Disney's best villains are the ones without powers (Hans, Gaston, Gothel, Lady Tremaine, Shan Yu, Radcliffe, Frollo, etc).
Yes thousands of Frollos in real life, and that includes ourselves
(Yes. They actually hated Hades.)
funny how his original counterpart isn't that evil
Hellfire is probably the most shocking song they ever had in any of their animated movies. I mean it's litteraly an old man lusting for a young woman and saying that he want her dead and burning in hell if she dare to reject him. They wouldn't do anything like this nowadays that's for sure.
And it's not subtle at all either!
@@starlightequestrian6729 No it's not very subtle but kids still won't get it. When I was a kid I would fast forward through that part.
Disney, no. But a lot of children's shows are more willing to express dangerous topics like this, so I could definitely see something like Hellfire appearing.
Megamind had something like that, just not through song ;P
@@inkeriananas i definitely got it as a kid and I was like dang lmao. Just sitting there at like the age of 5 just like o.O
Frollo is absolutely the most terrifying Disney villain 💯
He's not a sorcerer or a dragon, just a corrupt man, w/ twisted religious & political power, a dark sexual obsession, and abusive & genocidal behavior. It's scary because it's *real*
Judge Frollo He's really my Favorite Disney Villain ever ❤🖤💜🔥
AND, he believes he's right, which makes him even MORE scary.
@@DanielSelk YES, that in his mind all of this is righteous means that *nothing* will deter him
Well put.
I Think Dr.Facilier He Does Have Some Of Judge Frollo and Jafar in him. ❤🖤💜🔥🃏🧞♂️
Yeah, and the second movie made me feel better about the ending of this movie.
Considering the film’s incredibly dark source material, the original Victor Hugo novel, I’m amazed Disney pulled this off as well as they did.
It still amazes me that Disney choose this book at the first place.
@@woodbbl you might enjoy the musical if you prefer the original ending then 😁 it’s really good, there are some recordings of it on RUclips
"SANCTUARY!" Gives me shivers every time!
Sorry but, what does Sanctuary mean?
@@kayasaki86 "refuge or safety from pursuit, persecution, or other danger." Back in the old days in a lot of places if you were in trouble with the law, if you got into a church you could claim sanctuary which meant they couldn't drag you out
In that momment Esmeralda is positioned in Cross shape.
It’s “JUSTICE!” ✊🏼 for me
@@kayasaki86 So there was a tradition that if a cathedral's bishop allowed a fugitive entry, they could claim 'Sanctuary' and as long as they stayed inside the Cathedral (or on the Cathedral grounds) the constables/ police could not arrest them. But, that generally meant a lifetime of living within the church - and only if you took the vows of the Church and became a Priest (if a man) or a Nun (if a woman).
Frollo doesn't have feelings for Esmeralda. He fetishizes her. It's a perverted obsession. Love your reactions though 😁
He has feelings... just not the right feelings xD
It's lust, not love. That's one of the ironic themes in this. He's singing an entire song about his holiness, while simultaneously confessing to one of the seven deadly sins.
You're right. He only felt lust for her.
Yeah I also think so, it's a perverse desire
He hates himself that he finds her attractive and wants her. I never knew that and saw that as a kid. I only knew when I became an adult and could see how he looked at her and what he said. But as a kid it went over my head.
I love how when Quasimodo says "you're not like other gypsies, they are evil," Esmeralda, instead of getting angry at him for saying that about her people, simply asks where he heard that from. She's not judging him for thinking that because she understands that he was just misguided by that asshole Frollo. That's what I like about her character.
It helps that Quasimodo viewing her as a good person indicated to her that, maybe, his views about her people could be changed. She was right.
Frollo is the symbol of people living at that time thinking about ugliness as evil. Still gypises originally in the novel are not a good kind, and based on that background Frollo intentionally “was” good, but later he has lost his way 😢
Frollo's song is easily one of the best disney villain songs
I think it is the best one
One of?
Absolutely!
BE PREPAAAAARED!!!!
animated version, of course
@@antonioelaventurero9117 Be Prepared is like the 2nd or 3rd best.
@@ClassicalMusic2002 you can find the show online and it's really good.

(Victor Hugo mostly wrote his book to save the Notre Dame from being torn down back then.)
Point is, this book is a completely different story with totally different themes and morals.
The musical adaptation manages to add some of these dark elements too.

The way that the guards mock Quasimodo saying "all hail the king" reminds me of how the Roman guards mocked Jesus when he was on trial saying the same and beating him
That's probably what they were going for, especially with all the other religious themes running through the story.

Except in the book. Phoebus tried to rape her. And if I'm remembering correctly, Frollo saved her by stabbing him.
@@TheBlackLakeSiren I am Talking about the Disney movie not the book! But Frollo Also kissed Esmeralda before running away and giving her the blame for attempting To kill the Captain.
@@TheBlackLakeSiren Actually, Frollo stabbed Phoebus out of jealousy and framed Esmeralda for it. And he ordered Quasimodo to kidnap her.
@@AjaofShanghai Of course he was jealous. I never said his reason for saving her was a good one. Lol.
@@DarthKay093 oh I know. I'm just mentioning what happened in the book.
Sad fact: In the novel, Esmeralda does die.😥
(Victor Hugo mostly wrote his book to save the Notre Dame from being torn down back then.)
Point is, this book is a completely different story with totally different themes and morals. It isn’t as relevant as people seem to think.
The goat lives though
I read the novel in school before seeing the movie. Seeing how Disney was able to give the storyline a bit more cheer and a happy ending really made me tip my hat off to them.
Just have to say, I’m 2 minutes in and I love that you are doing Disney movies. The fact you don’t constantly do jokes or make fun of these amazing animated movies is why I watch you 😂😂 You seem so happy watching them which makes for a better reaction.😊
Thanks so much! I really am haha.

Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction! Tried to include as much of the score and songs as I could! Next up is Castaway and then Moana!
As a subscriber from Hawaii, the voice actress for Moana is a local girl from my island and the movie is very meaningful to Polynesian culture. Coco is also a cultural masterpiece
After those you should totally watch Tangled. Easily the best disney movie ever in my opinion
Get your tissues ready for Castaway, just saying.
Dude I gotta say, there were moments with Frollo where you looked legit terrified especially Frollo's song Hellfire. I wanted to ask if you were ok. On another note I've actually performed Frollo's song before and I know that it gave people the very same reaction because of the content and meaning behind it.
So excited for Castaway! Love your reactions so much.
Ever considered White Oleander or Thirteen?
Love frome Ireland!
Pretty sure I missed some 😩
Sêxůąlïzìng/óbjẹctıfŷįng Esmerelda
My favorite song is God Help the Outcast. All those people were praying for themselves, fame, glory... but Esmeralda asks for nothing but for Him to help those less fortunate.
(This information about Hellfire isn't mine):
First of all, Frollo doesn't speak or sing to God, or Christ, but to Virgin Mary.
Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti - I confess to Almighty God
Beatae Mariae semper virgini - to the Blessed Mary ever-virgin
Beatae Michaeli archangelo - to Blessed Michael the Archangel
Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis - to the holy apostles, all the saints
Et tibi pater - and to you, Father
Quia peccavi nimis - that I have sinned
Cogitatione - in thought
Verbo et opere - in word and in deed
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa - through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault
Kyrie eleison - Lord, have mercy
When it comes to forgiveness, however, there must be more than merely a confession of sins but true repentance.
@@evenmoor sadly confiteor is no longer spoken before mass. Latin itself has been killed as a medium of prayer
frollo was singing to the virgin mary. in his song he was also praying. he’s roman catholic and they idolize and pray to mary.

THE best Disney movie in my opinion. Best music. Favourite female Disney character.
Yes, but this is Hunchback...What ABOUT Aladdin?
Agreed. The best
Beauty and the beast and hunchback of Notre dame are definitely my favorite Disney movies
I'm beyond grateful this film is a household name now. Back in the day, it was a modest success, but it received mostly mixed reactions for being nothing like what Disney was producing at the time. And I love it for that.

If it wasn’t for Cinderella the studios would have died a long time ago.
Completely agree!
I want to believe this movie helped a lot of people accept others no matter the appearance.
The music is incredible in this movie. I even cried watching this reaction. This movie gets me every time

Hands down THE BEST VILLIAN (IMO) Judge Claude Frollo; in terms of power or magic his weak in comparison to other main villains but the fact that he is just a human with power makes him dangerous and everything he does leaves you with an impact:
-The death of Quasimodo’s mother
-The terrible parenthood of Quasimodo
-Hunting down gypsies
-Try to rape Esmeralda
-Burn all Paris

Think about the first Disney meeting about making this movie.........
"Let's take a character who was basically deaf and make a musical."
I think you came to an important realization that many people seem to miss: that Esmeralda's happiness is important to Quasimodo. Maybe because you really seemed to really get Quasi, his personality and what was important to him, even at the first watch.
30:58
That's molten lead used to repair the bells.
That and even though Quasi and Esmeralda didn't end up together, he still got everything he ever really wanted in the end; a life free of the bell tower, and the acceptance of the people
"Out there" makes me weep everytime!
This is Disney's most underrated film!!!
Thanks so much, I’m glad I’m able to show that and lots of you guys can see that. Really appreciate it!
In fairness, the way you pronounced it is how the football team pronounces it.
This may sound odd, but the childlike purity and sincerity in your reactions is what we love
BTW, Lord, did the meaning of "Hellfire" go over my little 8-year-old head at the time
Lmao - so true. Watching this movie multiple times while growing up and into adulthood really makes your stomach turn. Amazing.
"Hellfire" is the best song in the movie, and is the best villain song in all of Disney. I don't care what anyone says.
Your face during Hellfire is the best reaction ever.
That “what the truckload of Christ?” Look.
The Bells of Notre Dame is my all time favorite Disney opening song, maybe just song in general. Its so epic and powerful and makes my heart swell.
Frollo doesn't have feelings for Esmeralda. It's not love, just lust and obsession. He's incapable of loving anyone but himself.
Eh, those ARE feelings - definitely not NICE feelings, of course...
“And what are your friends made of, Quasimodo?”
“Sto-“
“LUNCH.”
I know it was probably accidental but PFFFT- 🤣
phoebus is such a boy scout in disney's version compared to his original counterpart xD
Aww thanks so much haha, really appreciate that.
If only had that bravery unlike nowadays
In terms of music, this is probably one of my favorite Disney movies. No matter how many times I've seen it, the music still gives me chills.
Aw thanks so much that means so much!
It's so nice to see someone watch this film for the first time and love it 😊
It's been one of my favourite Disney movies since I was little.
