Me, seeing that you're watching this movie: "Why are you doing this to yourself?". I love and hate this movie. Love, because it is a masterpiece. Hate, because I cry every single time.
That's exactly how I feel about this one and the reason why I've only watched it a couple of times as an adult. My heart can't take it.
I like to cry. It means my heart works
My brain telling myself: Come on man... you're 36 years old! You're an adult!! You cant cry for this at this age!

Though i personally find i appreciate it more and more given how few films can and or are willing to take the same level now a days
usually you have to wait on Pixar or something to get the emotional quality this film provided on both ends of the spectrum.

1- saw the whole movie about 20 times and I love it, that part still makes me cry my head red.
2- Why can nobody take a joke even if it wasn't the best in the universe?
And 3- I get you are a sensitive snowflake and you think attacking a random person online is going to make me feel bad but I'll just say, the amount of bullying I get in school on a regular basis has made your comments a good laugh that I really need.

Welcome to Don Bluth films, my friend. Don Bluth believed that children's films could be filled with sorrow and tragedy as long as you put a happy ended on the end.
Every single one of his films are just a series of tragedies and hardships, and then there is a happy ending.
I would say the movie have a bittersweet ending since Littlefoot still lost his mother.

I don't think I ever realized just how RICH the colors in this movie are - even when they're supposed to be traveling through very sparse land. It keeps it looking appealing and otherworldly. Though oddly enough, it still doesn't ruin the grand reveal of the Great Valley later on.
Most Bluth films have very rich colour palette... You should watch THE SECRET OF NIHM, it's simply stunning !... And a masterpiece !
I think that’s because a lot of the richness is in earthen tones and sunset colors. A lot of the greens and blues we see are very dark or very dull. That’s why the great valley reveal is still so vibrant and impactful even tho the rest of the movie is also colorful. It’s colorful on the opposite end of the spectrum
@@serpentmaster1323 Yeah, that was my thought! A lot of the sets are canyons and deserts and whatnot, lots of warm colors, not much greenery and water.
It definitely takes inspiration from the 'Rite of Spring' segment from Disney's Fantasia film.
Yeah and that's why I think the Disney Dinosaurs movie falls flat, as its suppose to have similar feelings of dread and hardships. But all they showed with the dinosaurs was a bland boring looking desert for 80% of the film, it gets boring to just be looking at sand and rocks all the time.
I was already a young adult when this came out (and old as dirt now), but I loved it so much. The real tragedy here is not that Littlefoot's mother dies, but that the little girl who voiced Ducky (Judith Barsi) was murdered by her father not too long after this movie was made - after enduring a lot of abuse from him. So I always think of her unhappy and short life when I watch this movie, which despite this sad story, I still love just as much as ever. Judith's voice made Ducky so special.
Yeah her last performance was in All Dogs Go to Heaven. I think her death really shocked Don Bleuth too for none of them had any idea of the abuse she suffered.
Don't tell Nick about Judith Barsi. He's a pure soul!
Same here. She was my favorite character in this movie and I loved All Dogs Go To Heaven as well so when I heard her story it broke my heart. Poor baby. 😥💔

Easily. Top 3 in animation. And to this day the longest lingering one by far with the follow up of Littlefoot mistaken in the shadow and the narrator.
What's even sadder is the real tragedy of this movie: Judith Barsi(The voice of Ducky)........

Before the Jaws Revenge premiere, which she was in, he took a knife and put it to her throat and said that if she and her mother didn't come back he'd kill them, yet he still did. He shot her while she was asleep then as the mother came running down the hallway he shot her too before setting the house on fire killing himself too. It's so sad not just because she died but knowing the pain she had suffered in those months leading up to her death, she had several breakdowns and was so traumatised. Ducky was her favourite role so on her grave it has written: "our concrete angel yep yep yep".

This movie DESTROYED me as a child. But I watched it all the time. I still can't watch this movie without crying.
Same. I got the first 8 movies on VHS and i watched it all the time. I got the rest on DVD. It was the beginning of the DVD era and i remember it felt really special. This movie is so dear to my heart.

I struggle not thinking of poor Ducky's voice actress and her story watching this. She was my favourite character as a child and knowing what became of her when I grew up was heartbreaking. I hope happiness and love finds her wherever her soul rests. 😢

Before Mufasa, but after Bambi’s Mom, and around the same time as Optimus, there was Littlefoot’s mother. 😭💔Disney isn’t the only company that traumatizes kids. The 80s man.
Don bluth, the creator of many wonderful animation movies: American tail, balto, land before time, all dogs go to heaven, and more.
His philosophy, kids are tougher than you think, they can handle almost anything, as long as you put a happy ending on it.
I think seeing a tragic stories with a happy ending teaches kids that after the darkness there is light. It's that hope that has kept me going for many years

This movie was my favorite as a child, and stills completely wrecks me to this day! There was a really good article, talking about why this movie is so impactful, and focuses of grief and loss in a way other kids movies don’t. Usually, a character looses a loved one, than instantly there is happiness in the next scene. But this movie dwells on depression, prolonged grief, and such deep sadness. Not common for a child movie!
Don Bluth, himself a former Disney animator in his own right (notice the similarities between young Littlefoot & Bambi when Littlefoot hides behind his mother once other creatures begin coming up to them), believed that children could handle near enough just about anything, so long as you tacked on a happy ending.

Making the end song and the main musical theme of the film the Dianna Ross song was genius.

27:50 It did go longer. This film is famous for having many cut and/or lost scenes some of which were used in trailers and commercials but were not in the theatrical version. For this example, Littlefoot found the Great Valley on his own but turned around to go back for the others because he was worried about them. The shots from Littlefoot talking to the clouds to the second wide shot of the Valley before saying the “over here” line, that was supposed to be shown before the rescue. However, because of the cuts, they were rearranged, and the “over here” line was added in after the rearranging.
The director Don Bluth has stated that he has the complete uncut version of the film but has never officially released it. Most likely because it wasn’t fully completed, and while he has that cut, he doesn’t own the I.P. If Universal wanted to release the full version, they would have to finish the animation with Bluth.
Another fun fact, not only did Steven Spielberg worked on this but also George Lucas who suggested that Cera should be female in order to have a cute yet fierce character to play off of and rival Littlefoot.
Yeah, and there were cuts made from the original VHS to the DVD as well.
I hope there is one day a full version release, on youtube or on a streaming website since it would still generate money

I think we all cried when Littlefoot's mom died. It was always especially scary to me, because I didn't want anything to happen to my mom. My dad died before I was born so my mom was all I had.
Years later I still cry
I was ten when The Land Before Time came out. Ducky was my favorite, and, I wanted a Ducky toy so much! But, every time my mother tried to get one for me, it was either sold out or discontinued.
My birthday was a few days ago. My friend, having heard that story, found (on eBay)the Ducky puppet that Pizza Hut distributed back in 1988.
So, I had to wait 33 years, but, I got my Ducky!!!
So many people say that Lion King has the saddest parent death scene. I strongly disagree. Littlefoot's mom dying is like the worst thing ever >.< The whole beginning of the movie is a rollercoaster of emotions. Even though this was "just" a reaction video, I cried so much xD Thanks for this

Lion king and Land before time have some of the saddest parental death scenes, mainly for the way in which the children interact with them after or during their passing.
"[If] you don’t show the darkness, you don’t appreciate the light. If it weren’t for December no one would appreciate May. It’s just important that you see both sides of that. As far as a happy ending…when you walk out of the theatre there’s [got to be] something that you have that you get to take home. What did it teach me? @@nathancruz9172 Posthumously. Judith & her mother Maria were killed by asshole father and husband Josef Barsi 4th months before even _Land Before Time_ hit theaters in 1988, whereas _All Dogs Go to Heaven_ released 10 months later in 1989.

This was my most treasured movie as a little kid, when I was 19 I bought it on Blu-Ray, put it into my xbox ready to experience the movie again in better quality but fully aware that I will probably cry at the mother dying scene. BUT THEN the menu started playing the theme song and when I tell you I just started balling!! I hadn't heard the song in years :')
If We Hold On Together is in my playlist to this day. Saw this for the first time on Christmas 1989 while my Lite Brite lit up the corner of a dark room. One of my best childhood memories.

I did not expect to cry in this since editing usually breaks the atmosphere of the movie but watching Littlefoots mother die and meeting the old drifter still hits hard.

Man, I need to rewatch these properly. I remember watching this so much as a kid (I always was and still am a huge fan of dinosaurs LOL). This is pure nostalgia. Oh! I’m keeping with the theme, I do recommend Disney’s “Dinosaur” as well. I actually just rewatched that for the first time in 15 years the other day and it’s just as great as I remember.

There's a saying with Don Bluth films "Whatever you end up seeing is the nice version" because he had a philosophy that you could show kids whatever dark things you want and as long as there's a happy ending its okay
I used to rewind the cherry scene way too much. A little fun scene to mellow the tragedy, and then back to reality. Little guy fighting with his siblings, and when he finally had a cherry of his own, he was willing to give it all away for a complete stranger. Someone he felt that had a greater need. That cherry was probably the only food from miles away, yet he was willing to give it up. That really stayed with me 😭
Me too. I always loved him even if we don't get to know his character. That part always stood out to me.
This is one of the few movies that when I watch, I cry every time no matter my age.
I have a deep connection with my own Mother whose still with us, but it’s hard to imagine losing her, and i’m glad i have had so much time with her, since many people don’t.
It hits kind of hard still.
Honestly this movie makes me sob every time. Even as I am watching the reaction to this video I am SOBBING! So freakin traumatizing geez!
Fun fact: the main reason the film was on the shorter side was because of a rearranging of scenes near the end, including a few that ended up cut. This is why Littlefoot somehow managed to find the group with little context so quickly; by this point he had talked to his mother's spirit, found the valley, and went back for them, hence why he's the only character in the shot during the reveal.
And now a not-so-fun fact: Shortly before A Land Before Time made it to theaters, the VA for Ducky, Judith Barsi, was murdered along with her mother by her father, who was an ungrateful drunkard (for lack of a better term), who committed suicide afterwards. On her memorial reads the line Ducky uses during the movie: "Yep, yep, yep!" Spielberg commented that he liked how well she responded to direction - a rare trait for child actors.

One of my favorites growing up. It was so peaceful in the Great Valley it ended up having enough problems in it for them to make 13 sequels. Also, I found it hilarious to later learn that the other role Littlefoot's voice actor is known for is as the foul mouthed kid from Robocop 2.
Watching this as an adult, the emotional bits still hit SO HARD, and the music is a big part of it. It's one of the few films that have managed to make me cry.
Also I hope you check out "Balto", another Don Bluth film and another big part of my childhood. It's more of an adventure film.
EDIT: Also check out the Disney film "Dinosaur"! Another fun and visually impressive film with nice messages and characters.
I loved Balto as a kid, but now I know the true story it's just infuriating. But yeah, beautiful visuals. Just watch Togo after to get the real story.
@@stephaniebattison2334 I was definitely the kind of kid who was motivated to do research after seeing a movie inspired by/based on real events, and thankfully I am also the kind of person who can separate a film from the events/people it is based off of. Knowing the truth about Balto doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the film and its characters. Don Bluth's "Balto" is its own thing, and, hey, it motivated me to learn about the REAL Balto! But that's just me going on a ramble, now.

Balto is a good movie. Yeah it’s distilling a whole ton of experiences mushers and their teams of dogs risking their lives down to a single half wolf for the sake of simplifying the story, but that story, wich is not the true story, is still a wonderful expertly animated masterpiece that calls attention the original story. So many people would never have found out about the real teams without this movie, and the movie is great. Honestly there’s no sin here.

There’s an old Hobbit proverb from The Lord of the Rings: Never laugh at sleeping dragons. The Tyrannosaurus Rex scene with Cera is the perfect example of why.
Judith barsi, aka ducky, also did the voice for Anne Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. That was her final movie.

They did such an amazing job on making the Sharptooth menacing and terrifying, this was and still is scarier than any portrayal of a Rex I’ve seen yet
According to the novelization of the movie, the Sharptooth wasn't going after the children out of hunger or anything. He went after them purely for revenge for Littlefoot taking out his eye, in addition to being a sadistic evil monster. Sharptooth is actually VERY proud and vain, he was originally after Littlefoot out of sadism, but when the young Longneck poked out his eye, it became extremely personal for Sharptooth

Behold my favorite childhood animated movie. In the 90s I watched this many times.
I think the 80’s style of animation fits this movie perfectly. Especially with the vibrant colors, it captures the prehistoric time period really well. I think today’s high tech would be great as well, it just would look a little too new, edgy, and clean.
Our understanding of prehistory would have affected it a great deal as well. Don't get me wrong; as a dinosaur enthusiast, I'm all for vibrant and naturalistic depictions. But there's just something that's so beautiful about the matte paintings and lighting that makes it so surreal that would be hard to replicate if we were going for accuracy.

Glad you enjoyed this. My grandmother got this movie when I was 4 because I was already a big fan of dinosaurs. She died rather suddenly when I was 5, so this movie always reminds me of my wonderful grandma. She was such an amazing teacher as well as she had me reading and writing by 5.
its so fun seeing reactors as adults who never saw the movies that i watched over and over again as a child. its kinda like remembering the magical first time i ever saw a movie as a child lol
This was my kid's favorite movie series growing up. As a teenager my daughter adopted a rescued bearded dragon that was named Ducky. My son wanted one too so we got him one and he named him Spike!

Being born in the early 90s I was fortunate to grow up with the animated films that I had and this was definitely one of them. It has a lot of heart.

It's so sad that Ducky's (the "yep, yep, yep!" dino) actress was murdered by her own father when she was just 10 years old. He shot her and her mother and then himself, and set their house on fire with them in it. This was the same little actress as who played Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven. A horribly sick man that brought great tragedy with him :(

Yes! The ultimate Don Bluth animated film. I KNEW Nick wouldn't be able to resist crying. We all know this movie is that great. Also RIP James Horner, one of the greatest film composers.
I used to love this movie as a kid but it sparked a deep fear of losing my mom. I would watch it every time and hope my mom would never die.
She died when I was 13 after a 5 year battle with cancer.
Haven't watched the movie until now with ya Nick. The scene where he cuddles the foot print is painful. I used to bury my face in memories of my own mom whether that was her old blouses or her empty purses. It was both a comfort and a pain.

I loved this movie as a child and honestly it still hold up. My favorite part is when Ducky’s parents accepted Spike so wholeheartedly as one of their own

Fun fact: During production of Disney's The Fox and the Hound, the character Chief was supposed to originally die during that train crash scene. The producers felt like it would be too dark for Disney and decided to keep him alive. However, some animators disagreed with this decision, arguing that Chief's death would be truer to the story, and eventually left Disney to, most of cases, create their own animation companies. One of these animators who left was Don Bluth, Land Before Time's director, also a guy that is definitely not afraid to show creepy or sad imagery to the audience.

@@Roger-hp1yg No, the version the op was talking about was never put in the final cut in the first place. The fight between Littlefoot's mother and the sharptooth was originally much more graphic, with the sharptooth being shown biting off a chunk of her neck. In the final cut, this is just shown in shadow, with her being shown only in closeups or in silhouette from that point onward. Also, Rooter, the old dinosaur Littlefoot talks to afterwards, was added at the recommendation of this child psychologist to soften the blow of his mother's death..

As someone who lost her grandmother in July, this movie affects me even more so now since Littlefoot's grief is very similar to mine. There are days where I just kinda stare off and it saddens me to no end. I also can relate to when he saw his shadow and thought of her as I had a dream that she was here again and woke up sad. Didn't help her ashes showed up that day too. Lol. Glad you could enjoy this gem of a movie.

Steven Spielberg worked on a LOT of Don Bluth's films. And of course the score is amazing; it was done by the late great James Horner.
One of my all-time favorite animated movies. The score, the animation, the environments...I still feel transported to an entirely different world watching this over 31 years after I first saw it on Christmas 1989. Still have my original VHS copy as well. This, The Secret of NIMH and An American Tail made me a life-long fan of Don Bluth.
18:39 it always hurts when I hear her say "Yup yup yup!" The actress had such a horrible outcome. And she was so young. She was so talented. Also was in All Dogs Go To Heaven and that movie on its own is dark. I encourage everyone to look up her back story
18:09 As a nerd on dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles (thanks to this movie series and others growing up), that seems to be a Dimetrodon. I believe it's anachronistic to the cast, it didn't live in the same time period as they did, but this is a children's movie, so inaccuracies are to be expected for the sake of including as many interesting or well-known species as possible. The question was probably rhetorical, but what's watching a dinosaur movie without some dinosaur trivia? :)
Yeah my youngest brother became obsessed with dinosaurs when he saw this movie and the movie series just started coming out on VHS.
Yeah I believe that is correct. The spine-backed lizard looking things were the early triassic and before that, (And Id I’m not mistaken, they’re not actually dinosaurs, something to do with diapsids and not diapsids) Im pretty sure, while triceratops, stegosaurus, and Allosaurus/brontosaurus were late cretaceous, as was ducky and petries’ species. (Pterodactyls are pterosaurs, not dinosaurs, as a side note.) Pretty sure TRex was also cretaceous, but I don’t want to say they were only late cretaceous. TRexs and their close cousins are much more diverse than they’re often portrayed

I was into dinosaurs when I saw this as as child and the one thing that irritated me was how they made Spike the Stegosaurus a dumb, plodding character. I loved the Stegosaurus and expected to see a ‘smart’ dinosaur.
@@serpentmaster1323 just to fix your timeline a bit, Dimetrodon was before the Triassic, Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus (not Brontosaurus, they proved Brontosaurus was miss identified as a new species, it was in fact an Apatosaurus, regardless Littlefoot is labeled as an Apatosaurus on the movie description anyway) were from the late Jurassic, and T-Rex, Triceratops, Pteranadon and Saurolophus (What ducky is mostly believed to be based on) were from the late Cretaceous. so yeah the cast are from all over the timeline, but thats most dino media for ya, showing all dinos living all at the same time.

One of my favorite movies growing up as a kid. Every time I’ve seen it, even as an adult, it’s always brought tears to my eyes. One of the most beautiful stories for a children’s movie. Great reaction as usual.

It's weird to say, but I remember at such a young age watching that scene with the old dinosaur talking to Littlefoot after his mom died - definitely a young enough age that I didn't fully grasp the concept and/or permanence of death. I think it was teaching me on a subconscious level. 😭
Man did it really come out 1988.... Those colours were just so vibrant and stand out so much... Old animation was so nice if done well

It's the primordial atmosphere that was captured so well in these earliest LBT films that captivated me so much as a kid, and still does. Combined with the score, they manage to evoke a strange, otherworldly sensation that few dinosaur movies can replicate, and I think that's why I like them so much. And this is the one that best exemplifies that, with the opening scenes showing the last days of the dinosaurs as they struggle to survive in their harsh world. Truly a great series (for like, the first five), and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did as a kid. Cheers, Nick.
Oh GOD this one is tough. So tough. The way Bluth made a point to have us linger on Littlefoot's grief and despair after the loss of his mom is just devastating; how he couldn't even be bothered to eat that one little berry breaks my heart every time. 😭
Littlefoot's scene with Old Rooter might be my favorite. It feels so grounded in what is really an honest portrayal of a grieving child. Sadness, confusion, even anger at his mother and himself; "Why did I wander so far from home?"; that really hits hard. And Rooter telling him it's nobody's fault, and how the ones we love always stay with us...gosh I can't even talk about it without crying all over again.
Also James Horner's score. Just incredible. What a gift!
The scene with Old Rooter is a great scene, it's also interesting to know that the scene was actually added at the last minute before the film's completion.
Early screen tests debated intensely to remove the scene of Littlefoot's mother dying from the movie (as it was feared that it would traumatize younger audiences), but Don Bluth was adamant that the scene stay, for it was crucial to the story. The studio compromised and allowed him to keep the scene, on the condition (as recommended form psychologists) that the scene with Old Rooter was added as a way to dampen the emotional devastation and grief for Littlefoot, which is why the character of Old Rooter is voiced by the narrator.

Oh my. I can not tell you enough, how I much I love this movie. The Land Before Times series was one of the most amazing memories of my childhood. My cousins was kinda obsessed with dinosaurs so we watched these movies a lot. I re-watched this particular one a few weeks ago, just because, and I still cried. Such a bittersweet movies, and memories attached to it. Thanks for the video, Nick!
As a kid I used to watch this VHS on repeat. But now as an adult it hits so different. Now I can’t watch without crying my eyes out.
I remember getting the Land before time puppets at Pizza Hut when I was little. I enjoyed watching your full reaction on Patreon as well. It is a very sweet and sad movie with a great happy ending.
Those Pizza Hut puppets were the best.
I had all but the Sharptooth puppet. Also, I remember some jelly or juice brand had reusable jars that were drinking glasses with the characters on them but I could be misremembering something else.
@@jasmer6754 that’s probably because they released the puppets without the t-Rex when the movie hit theaters and they did a second release when it hit home video with Sharp Tooth included.
omg yes!!! I got so excited when I saw you had reacted to this. This was such a huge part of my childhood, I love the land before time series, but the first one is definitely the most memorable and beautifully made one and the music is amazing.

I remember exactly that everytime I watched this movie as a kid, my parents had to come sit next to me everytime the Sharptooth appeared because I was too frightened. But it was (and still is) nevertheless one of my favourite movies.
Honestly, when I was a kid, I was positive this was a Disney movie because of how depressing it is with the parental figure always dying.

My childhood! Grew up on this series of movies of the Land Before Time cause there are so many parts to it. Glad you loved it. It was magical for me and my brother. It teaches you about friendship and about not giving up. Loved them as a child.
