@@JDP5127 OMG, he is amazing! For me it's a toss up: Tim Curry is great, and hilarious, but the best dramatic version I've seen was Brian Blessed in a mini-series called Return to Treasure Island. Brian can go from jovial to hard boiled and back in a split second, and he uses it to perfection to play Silver as a sort of jolly old sailing man one second, then be deadly threatening the next.

This movie had a lot of odds against it when it came out. The project was declined by Disney several times before and it was the dream project of the creators. But they had to bring in the big moneys for Disney first with other movies such as big 90's classics. They begged Disney practically for Treasure Planet to be greenlighted. And when they finally finished their dream movie, Disney barely gave it any attention, thus partly resulting in the bad box office record and critical reviews.
Treasure Planet also came out in a time period where the pirate genre was a dead one. No one cared for pirates in cinema. Only to be blow life into it 1 year later by a little movie called Pirates of the Caribbean. Everything was against Treasure Planet and it's an awfull shame.

Disney didn't want to make 2-D anymore, so they intentionally sabotaged it. 3-D is cheaper and quicker, and that's just sickening! It's lazy. Even today, too few people know about this masterpiece.

The more the shame how poorly it did critically and financially. People apparently weren't ready for this yet, and it's wonderfull how the movie has gained a big cult following over the years. Disney denied this project for a long time and the producers had to prove themselves over and over again with other movies, bringing the big money in for Disney and practically begged the project Treasure Planet to be greenlighted.
Disney did not care for Treasure Planet even after it was finished. They barely promoted the movie or gave any attention to it, which partly resulted in the bad box office record of Treasure Planet.

I think Jim's mum is also scared that Jim might end up like his father - always out looking for adventure, not wanting to be tied down, being selfish, never taking responsibility. I'm not saying that Jim is like that but I think his mother's scared that if he doesn't take responsibility or find a direction in his life then he might end up like that and might abandon a woman and a child someday. Don't forget, Jim's father abandoned her as well, always leaving her to raise their son and manage their business on their own and then finally just leaving her for good, and she can't spend as much time with Jim as she wants to because she's too busy in keeping the inn running so that she and her son will have a roof over their head. Basically speaking his dad nearly screwed everything up for the both of them and it hurt her as much as it hurt Jim and they're both dealing with it and feeling sorry for themselves in their own way.

I have so much I could say about this movie!! It is probably one of my all time favorites. It's one I could watch a hundred times over and never get tired of it. So much beautiful animation and characters and world building that I can't stop loving it. It has so many great story elements we don't normally see in a Disney movie like the fact that Jim's father didn't die, but just flat out was rather neglectful and abandoned him at a tender age.
Another very interesting note though that adds to the story is the shadows around Jim's eyes (as well as those little lines around the face area too). It's around his eyes for most of the movie and its meant in a way to show his distant, trusting issues, and fear that he can't actually make someone proud. The dark colors in his clothes also have a play in that, the dark shirt and jacket. But as the movie goes on he wears less dark colors (losing the jacket) and the shadow around his eyes is gone by the end of the movie. Showing his confidence and growth he has gone through during his trip.
Another is the incorporation of 2D and 3D animation. Things like the ship and B.E.N. and various other elements are done in 3D with it being covered in a 2D color pallet. Even all of Silver cybernetics are all 3D but the rest of his regular body is 2D. They blended those parts in you think its all 2D which is just truly amazing how they did it. (I believe someone uploaded a video of the Making of Treasure Planet video that normally is on the DVD. So if you are interested in learning more I would say watch that.)
Though it had a troubled history in development (which is a whole other story) I am glad we have the movie and so many still appreciate it today. There is a video called Treasure Planet Disney's Biggest Mistake that goes into more history (the title is a bit misleading as it means Disney's biggest mistake was mistreating the movie) so I would also recommend that as well to learn even more.
Also final fun fact! The author of Treasure Island which this movie is based on is Robert Louis Stevenson and the ship in Treasure Planet is called the R.L.S legacy. So that's a fun little easter egg.

I recommend the original book if you haven't read it, Treasure Island my late grandfather used to read me it when I was little and it was one of his most favourite books. I still love it to this day

Usually the reactions I've watched are not as emotionally invested and whole heartedly in love with the characters and their stories. But you got so caught up within the movie that you allowed us to witness your Real Reactions. We got to see your genuine and sincere smile throughout the film showing how genuinely happy you were to what these characters and follow them on their journey and to see you cry at the end really had me tear up too. It was so refreshing to see someone become so emotionally involved with this movie that I have cherished ever since I was a kid. Thank you. This reaction of yours was a real treat. Treasure Planet, along with Lion King, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and a few others are my favorites of the Disney animated “classics.” I also liked the relationship between Jim, and Silver. Yeah, it’s not very often that you hear of a well developed relationship like with those two in other Disney films, eh? Also, I loved the score, and I thought the characters were overall really well developed. Honestly, I would say that I appreciate this film more as an adult than I did say as a teenager. I’m so angry that this film bombed at the box office. Treasure Planet deserved to be more successful, that’s for sure. Anyway, great review once again!

So, fun fact: A sequel was planned and even in production. The storyboard had already been fully drafted and they were set to begin when Disney outright canceled the project after the original bombed. I can't recall much, but if memory serves both Jim and Silver would have reunited as allies, and a new female pirate would have joined them as a love interest for Jim. It pains me that we'll never get a true sequel unless Disney decides to remake the original, and if it's a success they may pick it back up. But with their recent remakes of The Lion King, Mulan, and Aladdin, I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Silver is such a stange villain because you can't help but like him, and not in the "Love to hate them" way most villains are. By the end of the movie, you almost want Jim to go with him because their relationship is so great. He's a badguy who met the son he never knew he wanted and turned into a not-so-bad-guy to the point you almost want to label him a hero by the end.

jim hawkins just being a dude who decides to try to make something for himself really grounds the film for me, and the tension in the way he yearns for a father in long-john, despite not feeling like he can trust him, is expertly done. the doctor side-kick is great, the sci-fi appropriations are clever and not jarring, and the overall look of the movie is gorgeous. great reaction, as always!

A science fiction adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 adventure novel "Treasure Island". Loved the book and loved the movie. :)
As for the kid being treated with respect, he is. He is being addressed by his proper title "Mr." as for the Captain, it is her ship and she is the Captain. So for the Captain to be addressed as "Captain" on her ship or "Ma'am" is not surprising as it is her ship. And the fact that she is his elder, he should be addressing her as such anyway. She earned that by living a lifetime before he was born.
She shows respect to him on a professional level and as a young man, he should be showing respect to her because she is his elder and Captain of the ship. Too easy. The language is not too advanced at all. Kids don't grow in language skills by not exposing them to the wide spectrum of language. Dumbing things down all the time keeps kids from growing. If you have kids who can play the piano and learn kung fu by the age of 2, that gives a clear indication the potential is there. A matter of fact, what we teach in the 1st year of collage today used to be standard for 8th readers in the late 1800s. Clearly that has hurt society a lot. With all that said... the story is a classic. The book is worth a read...as the characters are developed and written so well. This movie does a great job of embracing those elements. :)

Like how the clothes and settings and all are so...Straight out of the original Treasure Island so like 1700s, but it also has futuristic technology and holograms and is happening in space. It's a bit of a fresh air for sci-fi where well...everything tends to look more like inm Star Trek or Star Wars with sleek ships, and all that

This movie is so freaking good and it got shafted by Disney. There was a power dynamic change during development at Disney and the project was no longer seen as a priority. Not confirmed, obviously, but its widely accepted that Disney released this movie up against big hitters like Harry Potter and didn't market the movie well so that it would tank on purpose. If you go back and look at the trailers for it you have no idea what the movie is about. The only audience members who would have an idea of what it was were adults who could pick up on its a retelling of Treasure Island. They were the owners of the GCI software used to make parts of Treasure Planet and it was super ground breaking so to them it was worth is to loose profit off of this movie to switch to predominantly 3D animation style which would mean further development of the software and profits.
I do think the movie would benefit from a longer run time like more modern movies get. To me this would be a perfect movie to redo in this current wave of Disney remakes, as much as I dislike them, so it can have its dues.

This movie uses a unique mix of 2D animation, CGI animation, and Deep-Canvas animation. Deep-Canvas animation is what gives the tunnel-vision effect when they show the POV shots. Deep-Canvas is a more expensive form of animation, and another movie that uses it very prominently is Disney's Tarzan.
Other fun facts: The narrator in the beginning is voiced by the *legendary* Tony Jay, who played Judge Claude Frollo in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Ben the robot is voiced by Martin Short. Also, The 2 songs in this movie (I'm Still Here & Where You Are) are done by The Goo Goo Dolls.
