Probably one of the best adaptations of the story ever made, and not just because of the unique sci-fi spin, but the relationships between the characters, especially the surrogate father/son bond between Jim and Silver.

This is probably the most emotionally complex Disney movie ever made.

I grew up with a present but absent father. He put food on my table and clothes on my back and also a place to live and I respect him for that. But he took away my self belief. He never gave me the confidence to face life, but instead destroyed my self esteem. This movie has such a special place in my heart because I saw it when I was a kid. The lines of "You got the makings of greatness in ya...I hope I'm there catching some of that light coming off you that day" "look at ya... glowing like a solar fire. You're something special JIm. You're gonna rattle the stars you are". When I tell you I cry every time I hear those lines and I'm 31 now. This movie makes me feel that I am special.

"I hope I'm there catching some of that light coming off you that day".
That scene is the GREATEST scene in film, in my opinion. The emotional depth it shows and relationship that these characters built in such a short amount of time. Every troubled kid or every kid with an absent dad could relate to that line. It was something special. I was 18 when i saw this movie and my dad was in my life for maybe 12 years and he was a total jerk the entire time, beating me, my sister, and my mom...i had no father figure in my life and i was graduted from high school without a single notion of direction in my life. man when i saw that part in the movie, i cried hard. i cry hard every single time those lines are spoken. Disney never had a movie quite like this, its a shame it did so poorly.

It didn’t do well be because Disney had no idea how to advertise it, which sounds wild because they are pretty good at marketing! This movie actually came out of a deal they made with a producer or something. He basically said he’d make a particular movie for them if they finally allow him to adapt Treasure Island as Treasure Planet. Disney said fine and the rest is history. But the issue Disney had with both Atlantis and Treasure Planet was there was no good way to advertise it. If you watch the trailer for this film, it’s kind of a mess and doesn’t say much about the film. Back in those days, it was common for Disney to advertise to kids with McD’s kids meals. The idea being that if a kid wants to see a movie, chances are, the entire family will go. It’s a good strategy. But what from this film would they put in a kids meal? There’s nothing specifically intriguing to a kid about the characters in this movie, especially since its main demographic is older kids. And older kids probably aren’t going to be swayed to see a film about a troubled teen whose dad left and he goes on a character building treasure hunt. To make matters worse, if I remember correctly, this film also lined up with the release of Harry Potter. That was going to dominate by leagues! Disney wasn’t actually overly enthused about this movie and so they didn’t really care to find a way to advertise it. If anything, it should have been proof to Disney that they can’t just put their name on something and it automatically makes money (foreshadowing CEO Chepak’s idea in 2022 since he felt advertising animated films was a waste of money because adults don’t like animation. This is partly why Strange New World flopped but wasn’t the only reason). Now, Treasure Planet is considered to be one of the best Disney films made along with the first 4 I mentioned in another comment. Unfortunately Disney still sees it and Atlantis as failures, and kinda refuses to acknowledge its late success as a cult classic. It’s really unfortunate because so many do really love these films.

This was made in an era when animation was at it's peak, amazing 2d animation combined with just enough 3d animation, a perfect mix with amazing story telling that dares to be dark.

Can you believe it took 17 years to get this movie made?
A sequel was in production while this one was close to being finished. The villain would've been a robot called Ironbeard voiced by Willem Dafoe. But due to the poor reception financially, it never got made, but there is concept art you can look at.

I feel Jim is one of the most relatable characters Disney has ever made. People are constantly trying to convince Disney and Square Enix to put Atlantis and Treasure Planet in Kingdom Hearts.
My Top 5 films in no particular order is Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Tarzan, Hunchback and Mulan. The main reason for this is because all of these films are complex and have a more adult story line. Mulan’s story being constantly juxtaposed between the funny, more lighthearted moments than being suddenly reminded that it’s a war film.

"You give up a few t'ings... Chasing a dream." When that flute hits, it hits HARD!
Also, this is some very old bit of trivia but still within the concept of Treasure Planet/Treasure Island (also a Disney movie). In the second Pirates of the Carribean movie, when Governer Swan (Elizabeth's dad) is trying to escape, he meets a guy at the docks only to find out the man was killed by Lord Beckett's manservant. The director wanted to make it that the man killed was Jim Hawken's dad and the reason his dad never returned is because he was killed, not because he abandoned them.
Lastly, the reason why they made the old ship styles flying in space, is because sailing the ocean, on a calm stary night, the water reflects the stars, and it looks like your flying throw space.

If that was the case for Treasure Planet, I think I'd prefer if Jim's father abandoned them. It happens all the time in the real world, and it makes his relationship with Silver all better, in terms of tragedy and poignancy.

@@ChillandQuill Which speaking of Disney's Treasure Island (1950), I really like how Robert Newton's John Silver created the Arrr stereotype we know of pirates. I really believe without him; we wouldn't have gotten the great character of Barbossa.
