@@ryankelly8428 Spirits Within was a great movie, just not a very good Final Fantasy movie. I feel like it would have done a lot better if they hadn't tied the FF name to it.
I was the annoying kid that read the book at 8 years old, and knew the whole plot when I watched this movie the next year. I didn't care though, it really is the best animated movie Disney ever made.
It was the opposite for me...in a way. I watched Muppet Treasure Island when I was young so I kind of was confused when I saw this movie why Mr. Arrow died and was not just marooned in space on a lifeboat. 😭😅 Later on listened to an audio book adaptation of Treasure Island with Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor from Doctor Who!) as Long John Silver.
4:02 Honestly it’s really really nice to see an older close female and male friendship, like there was no pining from delbert’s part, they were just friends. Such a breath of fresh air (Also the main character not getting with someone by the end was also great)
I’m guessing you haven’t seen any other versions of Treasure _Island._ not Planet. Treasure Island is a more traditional ship on the sea pirate story. Recommend the Muppet one The song is uplifting for Jim and Silver bonding! “Jim I’m an astronomer! Not a doctor!” Star Trek. Pride. _Flint_ looted a thousand worlds. That was _his_ treasure. He’s be damned if he let anyone else get it He gave that small handful of his _life obsession_ that he managed to get. To Jim. 😭 Man I wish this had done well at the box office. They had a sequel AND a tv show planned. The sequel would’ve been Jim and Kate (his love interest and classmate at the academy) teaming up with Silver to stop another pirate called Ironbeard (meant to be voiced by Willem Dafoe, that would’ve been amazing!) from freeing a bunch of criminals from prison. Kate was gonna become wary of Jim after finding out he was friends with a pirate
I saw this in theaters for my birthday with a friend, and it became my favorite disney movie. I remember being obsessed with it (and yes crushing on jim and joseph gordon levitt lol). I also started drawing more because of it. Definitely underrated. I need Disney to take more creative chances like this again! Thanks for reacting to this!!

Making the antagonist being also the father figure was a spot on choice. Like, the book has some of that but in there Silver is more of a let down to Jim, who ends up having that father/son relationship with one of the Delbert analogs (who is a composed character).
It's based off Treasure Island. It's obviously not a super faithful adaption but it has some of the major plot points and I appreciate Disney being willing to have the sorta complicated friendship of Jim and Silver.
Disney basically sent this movie out to die. Not only did they pull it from Summer to an already-crowded November '02 release, their advertising basically spoiled all the major character introductions. Commercials also played this up as more a wacky scifi comedy rather than a mostly-serious animated drama so that may have turned even more people off.
To me, The soundtrack of this film is absolutely phenomenal. I still remember every tune, feel and emotion with every soundtrack that was played. It was this movie which introduced me to James Newton Howard’s musical works! I honestly don’t know what is with this movie, but this one is really my top favourite Disney Movie of all time for me. I’ve read from somewhere that this movie was a passion project, and that it was actually going to get a tv series back in the day!

if I remember right, this movie was made with the promise that disney would be 70% accurate to the book treasure Island and then they would have 30% creative freedom to add the crazy space fantasy elements also the creators of this movie Ron Clements and John Musker poured everything they had into this movie. It was something they wanted to make for a long time. It was their passion project and they practically had to beg disney to let them make it. Disney basically told them they could make it if they made 3(?if I remember right) successful movies before to prove themselves. They were the ones that made Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Hercules. Its sad though because many people (including myself) theorize that Disney purposely made Treasure Planet flop so they could more justifiably make the move to 3d animation. The marketing for this movie was horrible and it was one of the last 2d animated movies before disney's 3d era
Close but actually the 70/30 ratio wasn't for accuracy specifically to the book it was for the realistic familiarity versus fiction. For example some of their guns look like old flintlock pistols so 70% of that item is recognizable to us as something that once existed that is familiar to us, the fact that it shoots lazers is the 30% fiction the part that makes it a fantasy world. Another example is the ships they look and operate like old rigging ships 70% realistic but they travel through space and use solar energy 30% fiction. Same with space they made it 70% space and 30% ocean essentially
This is one of my favorite Disney classics, and you're right, it is underrated. They took the book 'Treasure Island' and told it with a different spin on the setting. It's basically steam punk/space punk. And it's just epic. And yeah, Jim is absolutely charming as hell. And how he forms a fatherly bond with Silver is beautiful. Glad u enjoyed it so much. Read some of the other comments; I agree and encourage u to watch Tangled the series.
This was Clement's and Musker's dream movie to do and they pitched this movie back in the 80s. Disney told them to do Little Mermaid and other projects instead like Hercules until Disney finally caved. Since Disney wanted to do more 3d animated movies they sabotaged Treasure Planet with little marketing as possible and had spoilers in the trailer. It was a huge slap in the face to Clements and Musker. However, this is one of my favorite Disney films and I also saw this in theaters.
I had a friend in college who would be watching this every time I went to see her. I think I watched this movie more times in my sophomore year than I did my entire life
you REEEALLY should watch The Owl House. I think you would like it a lot, especially the second season (we are in hiatus so there's only 10 episodes but they are *chef's kiss*)
omg, this is my favorite movie!! so happy to see your reaction. Jim & silver's relationship is so precious to me. I love how different this movie is from all the other disney films, it's so unique
I love this movie. Jim is such a relatable character and I think pretty accurately captures the complex aspects of being a teen, especially a teen with a parent who walked out.
Treasure Planet was also one of the first animated movies to fully utilize the combination of CG animation AND classic 2D hand-drawn animation. And you can see how well it goes together in Silver's character. All of his prosthetics are CG, but the rest of his body is hand-drawn.
So, one of the reasons this film is so underrated is that it didn't do too good at the box office. Some blame the fact that it was released in the same holiday season as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. And that certainly was a factor, but that's hardly fair; Disney has no control over Warner Bros.' release schedule, and they can't just decide to not release a movie because of the competition (for one thing, there was a contract with McDonalds saying they'd have a feature length animation every year so there could be a Happy Meal tie-in). What Disney DOES have control over is their own release schedule, however, and they released The Santa Clause 2 at the beginning of the same November that Treasure Planet was released at the end of. So in addition to Potter, you had two Disney films competing with each other for screen time and that box office dollar, and the one that wasn't Treasure Planet was one that specifically was intended to stick around through the end of December. And lets look at Santa Clause 2 for a moment. There wasn't a huge demand for this sequel... they'd waited 8 years after the first one to put it out. They could have very well held it back until the next holiday season and made it 9 years instead. Instead, whatever executive was in charge of the release schedule looked at the fact that these two films would be competing against each other when they already had strong competition from a rival studio, and decided not to care. And when the Mouse competes against himself, the obvious happens: the Mouse loses.
Watched this film for the first time last year during quarantine & I'm happy to say that I finally understand what all the hype was about, this is a fantastic film that deserved so much more than what Disney execs gave it back then! (This & Atlantis, a movie I do actually remember watching at least once when I was little). 👏🎇
I've been absolutely obsessed with the building relationship between Captain Amelia and Dr Doppler for the last 20+ years. I saw it with my oldest neice and nephew when I was 16 and fell in love with the film. At the time I related more to Jyms story arch, but now in my late 30's (around the age Captain Amelia was supposed to be during the timeline of the film) I relate more heavily on her and the Dr's story arch than anything. I've been writing a fanfiction off about their love affair for the past 2 decades
This movie was such a good childhood movie 🤌. Titan A.E (fun spacey movie... From what I recall), Secret of Nhim (dark story) are good ones that aren't Disney Black Cauldron is a weird 80s hidden Disney that caused some good ol' childhood anxiety haha
I grew up watching this movie since I can remember, the song I'm Still Here was one of my first favorite songs and remains to this day one of my all time favorites cause of its feel but as I got older, I began to relate to the song on a level that made me cry more times then I can count when I was in high school, difference is my dad liked to pretend he cared for his family for his own conscious and being good in the eyes of God. This film is phenomenal, great message and brilliant score with a message that moves worlds, they don't make them like this anymore, now I sound like an old man when I'm only 21
6:26 Ikr ,I was hoping all the way during the movie that he is a good person, and I believed in him when I first watched it.But he really is a character who can be good or bad too in the viewers' eyes
It's impressive Disney hasn't done a sequel to this? They could easily put something together, like with Jim's father being a criminal or Jim's search for him or Jim being a captain himself or in that galactic academy etc.
Seeing how much people enjoy this movie makes me wish the sequel, completely written with a full story board, wasn't scrapped. I would have liked to see it.
I've always loved this movie it's a scifi rendition of treasure island that mixes 2d hand drawn and 3d graphics. The directors fought Disney just for Disney to sabotage it all the way through
Treasure Planet is set in a galaxy that is culturally resembles our 18th Century. It is also one of Disney's great underrated films. Disney had plans for this franchise, but those were scrapped due to poor performance because this film came out at the same time that Fantasia 2000 and Beauty and the Beast were re-released to IMAX and other films that debuted that week include Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Die Another Day, and The Santa Clause. The film was also the most expensive traditionally animated film ever.
Brought in by from Disney starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins in this animated film about a treasure map to a long lost treasure and the quest to go get it. This movie was based on the book written by Robert Louis Stevenson
This movie is based on the famous book and story of Treasure Island, which is a pirate story in real life but fictional, made in 17th century. Like Captain Flint, Long john silver and everyone else. A series called Black Sails also gets into the Treasure Island story.
I've been binge watching reactions to this movie, it's kinda funny to me how many people I've seen that thought the Captain was going to be the villain.
Between his and Uncle Iroh from ATLA, that generation grew up with such amazing role models that would tell us what we needed to hear the most. I sing at the top of my lungs every time I hear this song and I love this movie and i'm happy to see you love it too n.n
Treasure Planet is a very underappreciated film by many. It's exceptionally appreciated for people who knows what it's like to have no father figure. The amount of kids growing up without fathers right now number in the tens of millions. And unlike in the movie, it's not because the fathers are leaving. The majority of fathers nowadays are denied from being in their kids' lives, assuming the kid ever even knew them. Single motherhood is a plague on children that absolutely shreds their early adulthood to pieces. Edit; Absolutely loved the reaction, one of the better I've seen of this movie =)
I really love the technology in this movie. It's not really steampunk but more scifipunk. And Silver is the best Disney dad. Best character arc and just an all around loveable scoundrel.
Treasure Planet is always going to have a big chunk of my heart. I've watched it I dont know how many times and I would fork over the cash to see it in theaters!! I love this film I can relate to Jim because my Dad left my Mom and it was hard as well to make ends meet. I wish they would make a short series of this on Disney + now it would be so good but alas I dont think that is ever going to happen. It's over 20 years old and still barely anyone knows about it :(
Treasure Planet is a retelling of the book Treasure Island. Which much like this film. Had Silver and Jim bond before the big reveal of Silver being the villain. But unlike the book. They have Jim turn Silver redeemable. Which they did extremely well.
There was supposed to be a treasure planet 2, but because this was considered a box office failure it got scrapped. Fortunately this movie found new life when it was released on home video which is how lots of kids myself included first saw it
'' Nobody will take my gold! I'm gonna protect it by placing bombs where i hide it then it will fall into lava. '' yeah that makes no sense X) Flint was not just stingy, he was crazy.
I love this movie! So fun to watch it with you :D The movie's based on Treasure Island, just in space. I love the world-building in it though, so cool how they combined the space and nautical aspects :)
I remember watching this back when I was in preschool in the cinema after school on a Friday, my mom surprised me and the graphics were absolutely amazing, we watched using those blue and red glasses, which made the experience even better!!!.. I even had a moph toy and a Jim action figure but the minuter version.
"GO DELBERT!! GO DELBERT!!" is one of my favorite things to say when something goes right ^w^ I also call people Delbert as a replacement for nerd, I'm chaotic
I'm high-key obsessed with Treasure Island, the novel this movie is based on. And I love this movie, it's criminally underrated. My favourite Treasure Island adaptation is a German/French adaptation in four parts from the 60s. I don't really recommend it, since it's way longer than it needs to be and has some... questionable acting... but it's my favourite none the less and has lots of interesting trivia, like the lead actor sustaining life threatening injury during a scene that made it to the final cut of the movie, you can literally see him fall into his knife, and the ship they used was destroyed in a storm shortly after the filming was done, and much more that I could rattle off like I'm the movie's wikipedia page. Treasure Planet comes in close second, and yes, I've had a HUGE crush on Treasure Planet's Jim since I first saw this movie!
Such a great adaptation... Was I wrong to be so invested in the sexy-action-cat-captain/awkward-bookworm-dog-scientist romance?? Nope. I’m still trying to find a kuppy...
Treasure Planet is one of my favorite movies ! It made me so happy that you've watched it ! If you have a bucket list, consider adding Mune : The Guardian of the Moon. It's really enchanting !
16:49 this one hurts. Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island had already so many adaptions that it hard to count and i am somewhat impressed that you never heard of it. The ship R.L.S. Legacy was named after him
yeah sadly there are a handful of amazing movies that got overlooked when they originally came out just because of bad timing and Treasure Planet which is also based off Treasure Island just happened to be one of those movies mostly because people kept getting it confused with Titan A.E. which came out around the same time ;D
Before everyone gets you watching the Muppets, there was also a good straight Disney live-action version of Treasure Island in the 40’s. How classic is it?: If you go “Arr, matey” on Talk Like a Pirate Day, you’re probably imitating Robert Newton as Silver.
One movie I can't recommend more is The Prince of Egypt(based on the story of Exodus), I would *love* to see you check it out. Even a non-religious person can find some serious enjoyment out of it.

One of my favourite Disney movies! 🪝⚓️🪐💰 mainly the music! 🎼🎻🪕🎧 I’m still here, 12 years later and always know where you are!
Brought in by from Disney starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jim Hawkins in this animated film about a treasure map to a long lost treasure and the quest to go get it. This movie was based on the book written by Robert Louis Stevenson
I missed Long John Silver, he maybe a pirate but there is still such confidence within in. We all always love and remember him.
Fun fact, the line "stop touching me" was in there because animating Jim interacting with the robot was difficult😅
I also felt the song would have been better suited for the end but lyrically it makes sense with probably his current mindset.
Yeaaaahhh, same, Jim Hawkins was my first cartoon crush, with Haku from Spirited away as a close second
love that!
Conflicted is the right way to feel about Long John Silver.
There was supposed to be a treasure planet 2, but because this was considered a box office failure it got scrapped. Fortunately this movie found new life when it was released on home video which is how lots of kids myself included first saw it
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen before” *GASP* how do you not know of this gem?
As a child I loved this movie because just like jim my father left my family
"Great, Another fictional animated character that I'm way too attracted to!"
I thought that statement was about someone else at first.
It brought me such happiness to see you get to experience all the laughs and cries I had as a kid and even today as an adult :)
I remember watching this back when I was in preschool in the cinema after school on a Friday, my mom surprised me and the graphics were absolutely amazing, we watched using those blue and red glasses, which made the experience even better!!!.. I even had a moph toy and a Jim action figure but the minuter version.
Not gonna lie, Jim is hot (and he's also really smart).
So yeah. Clearly understandable.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Fantastic movie.
I'm one of the few people who actually did get to see this movie in theaters. Can confirm it was an amazing experience.
Song uplifting the song is about being an outcast rejected by others trying to hold onto yourself snd find a place in the world
“Uplifting” 🤣
Such a great adaptation... Was I wrong to be so invested in the sexy-action-cat-captain/awkward-bookworm-dog-scientist romance?? Nope.
I’m still trying to find a kuppy...
Btw... I’ve watched this movie about 30 times - watching you watch it for the first time made it new again for me. Thanks :)
Don't be sad about being attracted to animated characters, I've been attracted to Jessica Rabbit, Kida, Esmeralda, and Chel since I was a kid.
Treasure Planet is one of my favorite movies ! It made me so happy that you've watched it !
If you have a bucket list, consider adding Mune : The Guardian of the Moon. It's really enchanting !
10:40 that star trek reference of dr bone's tho xD his line was always: "damnit jim, i'm a doctor not a [insert whatever here based on the episode]
Treasure Plant, it's Treasure Island but in space! Perfect concept.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE
16:49 this one hurts. Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island had already so many adaptions that it hard to count and i am somewhat impressed that you never heard of it.
The ship R.L.S. Legacy was named after him
yeah sadly there are a handful of amazing movies that got overlooked when they originally came out just because of bad timing and Treasure Planet which is also based off Treasure Island just happened to be one of those movies mostly because people kept getting it confused with Titan A.E. which came out around the same time ;D
I love this movie!
Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are the best Disney movies in their catalogue and i WILL fight anyone on this-
Before everyone gets you watching the Muppets, there was also a good straight Disney live-action version of Treasure Island in the 40’s.
How classic is it?: If you go “Arr, matey” on Talk Like a Pirate Day, you’re probably imitating Robert Newton as Silver.
I think you’d like to know that the soundtrack is from the same director that did the music for Raya and the last dragon :3 Both so good
One movie I can't recommend more is The Prince of Egypt(based on the story of Exodus), I would *love* to see you check it out. Even a non-religious person can find some serious enjoyment out of it.
I first watched this in 5th grade, in the school gym and I still love it years later
9:40 She's British because she's a genderswapped version of the British captain in the original. Hawkins and Silver are also British.
