  • There is no red ring around the barrel, but this is a fantastic lens from the era of film photography. It's fast with a maximum aperture of f/2, and therefore good in low light. The depth of field is very shallow, which is useful for isolating your subject against the background. The bokeh is smooth and pleasant looking, with no weird artefacts. However, being a manual focus lens with a very shallow depth of field, focusing is quite difficult with little room for error. Moving subjects are particularly difficult to get in focus.
The Canon T90, in my opinion, is the finest manual-focus film camera ever made. For these sample images, I used Kodak Portra 160 colour negative film and Fomapan 200 B/W. I used a Canon 300TL flash for some portrait shots with the Kodak Portra film. The B/W shots were all taken with available light.
Scanning was done using my Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner and Epson Scan software. I carried out minimal post-processing. Some slight adjustment in levels, and some sharpening. If I had wanted to remove all the grain and film imperfections, I may as well have shot digital.
