@@calebbrunkow I'm a sucker for looks so yeah i was drawn in by the pure aesthetics of the Canon lenses, the red ringed L's in particular. Hence why my first SLR was a Canon AE-1P. I have also been a Canon shooter in my entire digital career so there's also that :P That being said, i've become more and more drawn to Nikon's 35mm SLR's and lenses lately, and i might just have to pick up some of those too.
I agree the 50/1.2 non-L is the better bang for the buck. I think a good point worth mentioning, maybe an unpopular opinion, but is anyone actually out there shooting narratives, commercials, paid work, etc. wide-open on nFD’s? Sometimes it’s appropriate, totally! Even on non-L’s it can be a desirable look that you can totally get away with. However, by the time you stop these lenses down to an appropriate aperture for most projects, they basically all match. Like Caleb said, the 50/1.2 L’s flares offer more “magic.” At the cost of rent. Great video Caleb!
Nice video! And to clarify, the non-moving glass element in the L lens is indeed the floating element that's there to correct the image during close focus situations.
Amazing video, didn't know that the difference between the L and the non L were that minor. Would love to see a similar comparison with the Nikkor lenses. Like the 50mm 1.2 Ai/Ai-s, 55mm 1.2 S.C and/or the 58mm 1.2 Noct.
@coach_yo the 85 is fantastic! I did a video a few years ago comparing the 85 1.2 to the Contax Zeiss 85 1.2. I’ve been wanting to make a video about my set for a while but I wasn’t done building it yet and also I don’t know what new I could offer the community, there’s already so many amazing videos on the FD’s out there
@@calebbrunkow I have not seen much on the “L” line, most of it is just general stuff about the FL and FD. Just cool to see the early renditions of the Canon L-Series. I’m a fan boy lol
The 24mm f/1.4L lenses listed for crazy high prices on eBay aren't selling at those prices. There's one asking $24,000 that's been there for a year or more. Actual selling prices are high, but not that high. You have to include "Sold" and "Completed" listings in your search to see this.
@@calebbrunkow I just bought the 85L and waiting on its delivery! What I’m have trouble with is why the aspherical 85 is 8x the price of the 85L if they both have an aspherical lens.
so did you miss focus or not. if you're going to publish a video and make samples make sure to make the testing at least somewhat scientific. don't waste my time with that nonsense.
I’ve gone through the footage and photos multiple times now and I don’t believe I missed focus, the lens just appears to be a bit soft wide open which was very apparent in the close focus test
@@calebbrunkow alright just going based on what you said in the video. thanks for the clarification. I came on strong to test your resiliency, you did well. Approved ;)

Those canon FD L's are just so damn beautiful. Both their image and their pure physical design.
So true!

Always wondered what the difference was between these two lenses. Thanks for sharing.

Great input and thank you so much, glad you enjoyed the video
Even better bang for the buckaroonies is the NFD 1.4

That’d be a really fun video to do as well. That 58 Noct is a real pricey lens though
i didnt knew all this differences, great video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
To my knowledge, special features like the Floating System, aspherical lenses, SD glass, and fluorite elements are only found on the "L" lenses.
Appreciate the insight! I thought so with the floating elements but couldn’t find anything online to prove it
I enjoy my L, but I also love my 55 SSC and nfd 50/1.4. Love them all!
Love the 55 SSC! Looks so close to the aspherical
@@calebbrunkowit is softer than L at wide aperture of course due to the focal length though
Damn Caleb you beat me to the punch
I’m sure you’re comparison will be 10 times better than mine haha
Yes they are absolutely amazing lenses..i know vause ive got a half a dozen of them..
That’s awesome! They’re great
Thank you for sharing
You’re welcome, hope you got something out of it
Great review. The L image definitely looks cleaner.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. The L is definitely a better image
I got my 50mm f1.2 fd for 25 bucks at a thrift shop and I love it
What an amazing deal!
Dang Caleb that FD L set must be a fortune. I saw the 24 mm going for crazy money
Definitely wasn’t cheap but managed to get them all for about the price of what just that 14mm goes for on its own usually. Pays to be patient I guess

Both

L stands for "Luxury"
Yep!

Some chromatic aberration looks okay but I’m not really a fan of the traditional purple fringing that you see a lot
