      I'm happy for them but what an insult. They went to Number One "before" The Supremes did. I wish they had gone to Europe and talk to this Generation Of Girl Groups about how fickle Fame can be.

      She had the strongest voice of the group and led on their early singles, but they didn't sell well so I guess that's why they ended up trying with Shirley (who actually had the lowest voice in the group and wasn't the best singer) and they hit a winning streak.

    The Shirelles LITERALLY defined what a "super-group" was during an era, where black females were not supposed to achieve superstardom. They PRE-DATE the Supremes...many dont know that, but they do. And if you dont know how influential they were, all you gotta do is watch that tv series "China Beach"..that tv show probably had the best soundtrack a show ever had, with music from the 50s & 60s. And the Shirelles' music is all over that show..far more than the Supremes.

    • @jackanthony976
      @jackanthony976 7 лет назад +2

      It would be difficult to induct the Marvellettes into the Hall of Fame as there is so much mystery surrounding their recordings between 1965 and 1971. In fact, Katherine Anderson states that there were no Marvellettes on their final album (1971) except for Wanda Young. The Andantes often recorded in place of the Marvellettes on most their post 1964 recordings. How can they be inducted when no one knows for sure who was singing on many of their recordings?

    • @robertvelez8485
      @robertvelez8485 7 лет назад +4

      JACK ANTHONY - No disrespect but there are a lot of groups in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame that did not even have a number 1 hit record but they are in! The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is full of shit and the Marvelletes belongs there like so many great African American artists who tend to be ignored or neglected because of their color! That's the truth cause the whole organization is 99% white!

    • @drummerc1795
      @drummerc1795 4 года назад

      Unfortunately, they have not been. It would be great for that to would happen for a number of reasons. One reason would be that of the 5 original members, only one is deceased. Arlene Smith, the original lead singer is still around and has been performing on her own for many years. The other three original members that are still alive have been performing til this day with a different lead singer who has been with them for many years. So, if they got inducted, we would get to see 4 of the five original members accept the award which would be pretty amazing since the group started 63 years ago.

      You wouldn't understand.

    • @jackjules7552
      @jackjules7552 3 года назад +1

      The trouble she is referring to is well documented in several books and articles about the music industry. By the time the Shirelles had reached 21 years of age, they had had 13 top 40 national hits. At that time they were on the road constantly. The legal agreement was that when the Shirelles reached 21 years of age, that they would receive all of their earnings that had supposedly been put away in trust for them. However, when the girls did reach 21 there was no money. Their manager and record company had taken all of the money. The Shirelles filed a lawsuit in 1964 and during the court proceedings The Shirelles spoke about how hurt and shocked they were to find that people they trusted and loved had worked behind their backs to abscond with the hard earned money of the Shirelles. The Shirelles got an earful at the court hearing about the wheeling and dealing behind their backs. In retaliation for filing a lawsuit, Sceptre Records no longer promoted or marketed the Shirelles releases and no longer regarded them as a priority. Therefore although the Shirelles had multiple record releases between 1964 and 1967 only one barely reached the bottom of the top 100. After 1967, the Shirelles were finally released from their contract with Sceptre records after which they bounced from one record company to another releasing single after single with no success. Even as early as 1969 the Shirelles were often relegated to the oldies circuit even though they were releasing numerous new singles as late as 1973. By the time the 1980s occurred, their were many fake Shirelles groups hitting the oldies circuit. When the original Shirelles were asked about the number of fake Shirelles on the road their they were shocked and appalled that it was somehow legal for promoters to hire fake Shirelles. Their professional integrity had been denigrated and devalued. One original Shirelle was in tears during an interview when she was shown a video of a group of fake Shirelles performing their hit songs as if they were the originators. It often amazes me that the general public can be fooled so easily. How is that for trouble? And I have only given you the surface. I am so happy that the original Shirelles were recognized at the Hall of Fame.
