It's crazy how the voice of the man on the ground goes from panicked and urgent with gunfire in the background at the first call to way more relaxed and quieter after the first strafe. It's some badass dish

I have a cousin who served in the US Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He told me while he was out on patrol, their convoy got ambushed immediately after the lead vehicle hit a IED. They were engaged by the Taliban on both sides of the valley who fired with small arms, rockets and mortars. A10 support was called in just in time as they were getting surrounded. Two A10s showed up to strafe both sides of the valley and the firefight stopped immediately. That is how effective A10s are. Even if the enemy wasn't completely wiped out, the sound of those guns really did put enough fear into the Taliban to make them break contact.

So if US Soldiers go on patrols and look easy to hit, they can draw out the enemy into attacking and get eliminated by air support. In other cases, the Taliban would usually hit and run or just hide.

Sometimes they’d almost appear overhead so slow it didn’t look like they were going fast enough to stay aloft and at other times they’d come streaking by after seemingly appearing from nowhere. I’d also hear that Gatling Gun where they were practicing. Much appreciation for those guys and for Every Member of our United States Military! Freedom isn’t Free! I’m so thankful for the many men and women who gave their all so we can enjoy the Freedoms we have in America! I’m just a retired Army Infantry Senior NCO and been in two wars. I was almost wiped out by an A-10 while in the 101st ABN on the Iraqi border, scared the hell, out of us but he broke off his run at the last second. Then later in 2003 we had enemy in a building pumping out fire down our MSR, the A-10 came down and it got real quiet after one pass. In the 80’s-90’s we were trained to coordinate close air support and taught the various munitions at their disposal and the best approach vectors for max impact but today they have AF liaison coordinators to talk with the birds. We knew their frequencies and once in the Gulf War we had 16” naval rifles on our support card but just for a couple days, that one kind of shocked us Grunts, lol, the 16” is more of a zip code weapon, lol. Infantry leaders carry a couple M4 magazines that’re full of tracer rounds which I use to direct fire for my platoon/squad or even air assets. Always put a few tracers at the bottom of each mag to let you know when you’re running low, during a fight, tracking ammo consumption isn’t that accurate. And always put on some tourniquets on one leg and upper arm, just safety pin it in place so when you’re hit, you can quickly clamp it down, the old cloth equipment straps work great as tourniquets if you run low. Always carry extra HC smoke grenades, you’ll need them more than you think.

3-phase 400hz baby. I worked in avionics in the Navy, but I think all military craft use the same type of generators. True story, I worked AIMD, so I was in the shop not on the line. We had generators to power the equipment for testing and diagnostics. I got a healthy shock from one on a cruise once. It blew me back from the bench, but I don't remember anything except for a bright flash and then I woke up on the floor with my head and back hurting. There was an exposed wire on the harness that I didn't notice and when I was pushing in the power module it made contact.

We were low on ammo and I remember sitting there thinking "is this it? Is this how I go?"... squad mate next to me a young kid had tears in his eyes as he prayed.
Radio guy I remember hearing him pleading with any air asset openly begging for help. I cry everytime I tell this story. I remember as the fire on us intensified I heard someone on the radio say "I got you sit tight"
Heard the screaming engines and the brrrrrrrr .....I then heard a bunch of explosions as another plane dumped ordinance. The shock waves ran through us like a powerful hug.
Immediately the situation changed. It was quietness right after. The opened a way for us out and we ran like he'll.
Most powerful day of my life. Witnessing all that. I cried about it for a long long time. Whoever that pilot was totally saved our hot sweaty smelly lives.

@@philliphampton5183 Exactly. The only reason the air force still operates them is because of pressure from the army. There is still nothing else that can fill it's role of saving the asses of US army troops pinned in shit situations on the ground.

You can see he didn't use the camera. The "dip check" at the very end of the video was actually to get the target marked and camera pointed. Its simply smoke and being talked on. As for the talk on, its really a lot easier than it sounds. For example something like "see the big building, its to the south just next to the red shack". A bit of confirmation and you have both people on the same place and, more importantly, confirmation of that. Thats also why 2 didn't do a run on the first, he wasn't completely confirmed as to where to go. After seeing the impact he was ready to go but 1 asked him to wait until the second run.

(And the Air Force purposely left that out of their report that supposedly made the A-10 look like it made a lot of friendly fire kills.)

I like how you can tell when he’s firing by the camera distortion. Even though you can’t hear it, you can tell it’s powerful enough to distort the camera whenever it fires (though that probably happens to any plane camera).

I’ve heard it said that while US troops were scary enough to fight against, a good amount of their power came from their ability to call in literal death from above and the A-10 is definitely a major part of that

I think the source of confusion here is that the Air Force published a misleading report in 2014 or so, and a reporter saw it and wrote a sensational article about the A-10 being a friendly fire cluster ****. A civilian watchdog organization looked at the same data and called out the AF on their bullshit.
The Air Force spokesperson who responded had some answer to the effect that it wasn't their fault the reporter came to those conclusions, and by the time he was done clarifying (backpedaling) he actually made the A-10 sound pretty good.
