My God this is one of the most intense performances. The guitar work by both Koppes and Wilson-Piper is just mind bending! Emotive, powerful, timeless. I feel so grateful to have had the Church with me throughout my life. I would be a lesser man without their music.
Of all the Church stuff on RUclips, this probably comes the closest to capturing the magic of the guitar interplay of Peter and Marty. Thanks so much for sharing.
i just typed word DESTINATION to the search bar.. and i saw this Live 1988 - Destination. I thought ''okay,i'm gonna check this out'' and now this is my favourite song
The first time I saw The Church, back in 1998, this was one of the encore songs. I was so close to the stage that when Marty was doing the volume swells during the choruses, I could actually hear the acoustic sound of him striking the guitar strings, before fading the volume control up!
Yes! I have experienced this too, at many of their shows, as I always made sure I was up the front right in front of Marty. Love the wash of the cascading guitars live, & the bass reverberating through my body. Awesome band I have loved for over 35 years now.
This is the best footage of the church ive ever seen and heard; on top of their game, full of fire and confidence on the back of starfish; guitars sound AMAZING , and kilbey could still sing in 1988. 10 OUT 10 GREAT PERFORMANCE
I was a teenager in the mid 80s, used to watch this tv show when I came back home from school in the afternoon. When I watched this, I can remember as it was yesterday, I falled in love with them. Every now and then I need listen to this, it takes me to another world without cell-phones or social crap.. There were instead my commodore 64, longlasting 3-vs-3 soccer challenges beside the streets, hours and hours of wandering thru the forest of pines along the sides of Vesuvius, breathing a better air, making some effort to play a pair of chords on my first cheap acoustic guitar. Humanity hasn't changed, our manners did.
This is such a great version of Destination...All the elements are just great here, a more aggressive live performance that snarls with great sound and attitude, while making it look easy.
Steve autographed my Starfish CD after their gig at the Granada Thearter ( Dallas, Tx) Steve was in good spirits and was very approachable ( we gave them a run for the money though, as they graced us for three enchores which Steve later wrote in his blog they never do..Ha!) All the stars aligned for this performance, this is the brilliance that is The Church. Miss the Marty but life rolls on, Peace, from Texas
This band (on this particular record especially) is one that was really able to do amazing things with two guitarists. Peter Koppes in particular has created some of my absolute favorite sounds thru the years. Fantastic clip of a band at it's zenith doing what it did best.
Amazing. The musicianship and poetry are just transporting. Nothing like brilliance on a Rickenbacker and a mullet or two! LOVE this band. Going to see them in Philly in a month. Cannot wait! The air has grown small fingers.
This is the best live clip of The Church I have ever found. The video and sound quality is shitty but the vibe of the performance is incredible.. they are totally in sync and you can just tell they know it. I wish I'd seen them in their heyday. Pun intended.
No other sound...I can watch this band all day long and Marty's playing even longer, it's out of the park and gives the church it's unique sound..glad they didn't go down the glam tube bc their music is truly timeless..Donny Darko really got me into their music so tht was an ace move to have you're music in cinema..🎸❤️🔥💯🤘😎
WHAT A GREAT CLASSIC, I WILL NEVER FORGET THIS BAND, PEOPLE, THIS BAND HAD TALENT AND AMAZING ABILITIES BEYOND OUR TIME;;;; BACK THEN,.. SUCH GREAT TALENTED MUSICIANS
Holy crap. This is SO good! They were freaking in the zone in this era. I think my biggest take away from seeing this is the reminder how great Richard Ploog was for the band, created so much flow for the guitars to work...I wish I had this whole performance. AMAZING!!! Thanks for sharing!
What a performance everyone was on point and they seemed to be realing feeling it, esp marty and pete they were having a back forth battle of amazing sounds.
Pioneers of this sound ... I am continuously blown away by how relevant and jaw dropping these guys lyrics and feelings have nailed the future ... or our today.
Only been buying the church records for about 3 years. Great musicians, songwriters & sound. I could listen to them forever 👍 so bored of the music around these days!
Wow this is fantastic. So good to see Ploog playing, they really lost some magic glue when he quit. Koppes’ strat thru that fender twin sounds unbelievable.
I saw this song performed live 1989 Ann Arbor Michigan at the State Theater. During the pregnant pause in this song, the lights went out. Lighters flamed on stage. Drags were taken from some other worldly pipe weed. The song was concluded in mind bending fashion. I have seen nothing like it at a Live Music Performance before or since.
Saw them on this tour in Chapel Hill, NC. Till this day, 07 Jan., 2020, still the best show I have ever seen by any band. Plus, I was on ecstacy and mushrooms, the MX missile!
Bless you for posting these!!! I have always searched for live footage and have been terribly unlucky. At least, I can view this here. What a great band. Again, thank you! Cheers...
Agree with you + add a little influence from glam and Bowie, and late 70's New Wave...they had it all together by Heyday and Starfish, for the Post Modern Rock movement... They have their own panache in the mix, which makes them so much the more set apart from their contemporaries. This version of Destination is among my very favorite with it's more aggressive live style and sound. Excellent.
Everytime i hear song by the Church, i have a new favorite Church song... That said, this rendition, of this song, is absolutely, beyond any shadow of a doubt, my favorite . At least, until, i hear another song, by The Church.
Saw them in Byron. I hadn't seen them since 90s. Amazing gig, such an electric vibe . I have to be grateful that vids like this reconnected me to one of my all-time fave bands. Stopped listening to them so much when my turntable died; most of my Church collection is on vinyl. In process of collecting CDs now...
Jesuskrishna: I don't have the NSEW performance or the Milan MTV one, but I'd love to hear them; and I'm sure others would, too. How 'bout dusting off that VHS player for us!
What a great song. At 3.21 I like it that the drummer comes in a bar late but they all see the funny side, should always be fun in a band, esp if someone messes up. Guitars are Fender Stat and a Rickenbacker with loads of reverb and a bit of delay or chorus I guess.
My God this is one of the most intense performances. The guitar work by both Koppes and Wilson-Piper is just mind bending! Emotive, powerful, timeless. I feel so grateful to have had the Church with me throughout my life. I would be a lesser man without their music.
+Pat ODonnell I strongly agree with you! Every single sentence you said is what I'd like to express!
Not gonna lie ... Pretty much what I would have been thinking. Total agreement!
Amen 100%.. The Church are with a doubt one of the greatest bands ever!!!
Preach!!!!! Love. Love, love, love
This song evokes deep feelings in me. In an instrospective way. Great performance of a great song
Of all the Church stuff on RUclips, this probably comes the closest to capturing the magic of the guitar interplay of Peter and Marty. Thanks so much for sharing.
The interplay of guitars between PK and MWP will never be duplicated. Pure magic. I really miss this lineup. Never to be duplicated!
i just typed word DESTINATION to the search bar.. and i saw this Live 1988 - Destination. I thought ''okay,i'm gonna check this out'' and now this is my favourite song
had you ever heard of The Church before you searched the word "destination" or were you searching for this song?
It's not a religion....its just a technique.....your destination...it looks kinda bleak!!❤🖤💀
Starfish was an awesome album. Every song was great.
i love all their albums. heyday might be their best.
The first time I saw The Church, back in 1998, this was one of the encore songs. I was so close to the stage that when Marty was doing the volume swells during the choruses, I could actually hear the acoustic sound of him striking the guitar strings, before fading the volume control up!

Wilson pipper..... Kopes.... The greatest. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This is the best footage of the church ive ever seen and heard; on top of their game, full of fire and confidence on the back of starfish; guitars sound AMAZING , and kilbey could still sing in 1988. 10 OUT 10 GREAT PERFORMANCE
Jesus Christ, Peter Koppes is so forward in the mix here, it sounds cavernous. My favourite live interpretation of my favourite Church number.
The best era hands down
you prefer it over heyday?
I was a teenager in the mid 80s, used to watch this tv show when I came back home from school in the afternoon. When I watched this, I can remember as it was yesterday, I falled in love with them. Marty and Peter at their best. The intense baselines of steven. The lyrics that take ya away. Ploog drumming so sweet.
Draconian winter.
Marty is my neighbour and my friend
.........unforetold.
First time I've heard this. Intriguing song. Fab guitar work. I'm amused at the way Marty makes himself look like Jeff Beck (gawd rest his soul)!
The church are so unique using two lead guitars, making it sound so full and exciting
This is such a great version of Destination...All the elements are just great here, a more aggressive live performance that snarls with great sound and attitude, while making it look easy.
I was as young like these guys and played all their tunes. Yes we got old but your music kept us alive
Steve autographed my Starfish CD after their gig at the Granada Thearter ( Dallas, Tx) Steve was in good spirits and was very approachable ( we gave them a run for the money though, as they graced us for three enchores which Steve later wrote in his blog they never do..Ha!)
All the stars aligned for this performance, this is the brilliance that is The Church.
Miss the Marty but life rolls on,
Peace, from Texas
Such a great performance, love this band.

Fantastic clip of a band at it's zenith doing what it did best.
One of the most underrated bands of all time.
Amazing. The musicianship and poetry are just transporting. Nothing like brilliance on a Rickenbacker and a mullet or two! LOVE this band. Going to see them in Philly in a month. Cannot wait! The air has grown small fingers.
The Church sounds amazing live. They're such gifted artists.
This is the best live clip of The Church I have ever found. The video and sound quality is shitty but the vibe of the performance is incredible.. they are totally in sync and you can just tell they know it. I wish I'd seen them in their heyday. Pun intended.
It's an amazing performance. Better than the album version.
yep, you're right.
No other sound...I can watch this band all day long and Marty's playing even longer, it's out of the park and gives the church it's unique sound..glad they didn't go down the glam tube bc their music is truly timeless..Donny Darko really got me into their music so tht was an ace move to have you're music in cinema..🎸❤️🔥💯🤘😎
great ❤tyxxfor sharing! 😊good seeing original musicians 😊they look great! met them several times when they played in my area DC! tyx for sharng! 😊
Always such a mysterious band with mysterious songs - like this great one
Yes.
Sad that a band as great as these guys gets so few views here. Well , too bad for the ignorant .
This might still be the greatest song I've ever heard...certainly top 5
Been listening to the church for a few years just discovered them and I gotta say one of the best bands really
So glad there is a live video of this song
Steve maravillosa voz, creo que The Church a dejado huella en mi vida, me encanta su musica. Es mi mayor Obsesión.
What a performance everyone was on point and they seemed to be realing feeling it, esp marty and pete they were having a back forth battle of amazing sounds.
Omg fantastic
I would say 88 and 89 were some of their best years. i saw them at Monash in 87 and it blew me away. That was their sweet spot...late 80s.
1982-1988 was one giant sweet spot for The Church.
I can't disagree, but the Forget Yourself show in London 2004 was incredible as well.
Masterful
awe... some. awesome. really takes me back.
spot on - majestic.
Pioneers of this sound ... I am continuously blown away by how relevant and jaw dropping these guys lyrics and feelings have nailed the future ... or our today.
Pure gold they are great live I saw them back in the day it was fantastic, just love this album.
I remember this tour....Awesome tour....Love the bass Steve Kilbey is playing
How I love, love, love The Church! Love Peter Koppes so much! Perfect , intense !!
They definitely nailed it in this performance. And who would thumbs down this masterpiece? LOL
The most awesome version of the band at the height of their power. Quite possibly the best opening album track and perfectly sets up the “second” song
Yes this is mesmerizing, is this the clip from Italian TV?
Love this! Absolutely spot on here.. So raw and yet so dialed in. MWP and Peter are just so in sync here.. Such a special band.
Good song off Starfish!
Only been buying the church records for about 3 years.
Great musicians, songwriters & sound.
I could listen to them forever 👍 so bored of the music around these days!
Get all their stuff, for sure Heyday, Starfish, Gold Afternoon Fix, Priest = Auro, Sometime Anywhere, Forget Yourself, and After Everything Now This.
Agree! @@chromiumveins
I saw them around this time in Chicago. Love them.
Thoughtful musicianship, great songwriting. An unbeatable combination and winning formula every time. Well done!
Wow this is fantastic. So good to see Ploog playing, they really lost some magic glue when he quit. Koppes’ strat thru that fender twin sounds unbelievable.
They were amazing in their day. Starfish was their best album by far.
Can’t agree with that. Starfish is too ‘safe’...I’ll take The Blurred Crusade or Heyday over Starfish.
That was frackin' great! God, I love The Church!!!
Absolutely phenomenal - top performance ! What masters of their craft at the top of their game.
This is what a BAND sounds like
Pristine, excellent, beautiful.
This is phenomenal. Use to hang with the Church from 84-87 when in NY - good guys sorry to see Richard no longer with the Church. - Thanks Mitch!
Saw them on this tour in Chapel Hill, NC. Till this day, 07 Jan., 2020, still the best show I have ever seen by any band. Plus, I was on ecstacy and mushrooms, the MX missile!
Spot on performance..and its live. Delays, choruses and vintage tones..Amazing!!
Bless you for posting these!!! I have always searched for live footage and have been terribly unlucky. At least, I can view this here. What a great band. Again, thank you!
Cheers...
If this song sounds in heaven, there is the perfect place to stay in
Awesome. Underrated. Magnificent.
Fantastic. This is one of the BEST Church live videos I've seen. Thanks for posting this!
the beatles + the byrds + pink floyd w/Syd + Dylan = The Church
Agree with you + add a little influence from glam and Bowie, and late 70's New Wave...they had it all together by Heyday and Starfish, for the Post Modern Rock movement... They have their own panache in the mix, which makes them so much the more set apart from their contemporaries. and Love (Arthur Lee)
True
Haaaa!!! The beatles? 😬🤣
Awesome live version...a little more edge on this and It rocks.
The Church=best damn guitars in the business. No one else even comes close.
Awesome how you come up with this precious rarity. Thank you.
@3:18 Drums a little late coming in and we get smiles all round because of this?
Simply wondrous!
great track that reminds me a lot of the house of love song, love in a car (came out 4 months after starfish)
Wspaniały zespół, wspaniała piosenka. Czemu teraz nie ma takich?
in the space between our bodies the air has grown small fingers
sick lyrics throughout the song
This is fantastic, as is the sound quality for 29 years ago. Great upload - love it : )
What a great band!
tidepoolbay d
WHAT AWESOMEW BAND¡¡¡ ONE OF THE BEST OF ALTERNATIVE SCENE OF 90'S
love this time for them...
absolutely stunning performance.
great lead guitar too
Fucking awesome.
Best guitar duo ever.
Inspiration, Destination is.
Its not a religion, its just a technique.
Everytime i hear song by the Church, i have a new favorite Church song... That said, this rendition, of this song, is absolutely, beyond any shadow of a doubt, my favorite .
At least, until, i hear another song, by The Church.
Great stuff.
Saw this tour at the old stuido 54. Amazing band.
Fantastic...
Saw them in Byron. I hadn't seen them since 90s. Amazing gig, such an electric vibe . I have to be grateful that vids like this reconnected me to one of my all-time fave bands. Stopped listening to them so much when my turntable died; most of my Church collection is on vinyl. In process of collecting CDs now...
distance and speed have left us too weak
Fucking amazing.
Saw them in BNA -- 1989 -- total magic.
Una band straordinaria. ARTE allo stato puro. UN LP ,,,IL capolavoro in ASSOLUTO. GREAT GREAT BAND. Denis.
Great gods this is awesome. One of the most powerful songs they do live and the second best lyrics right up against Priest = Aura.
Yes, i love the lyrics of both of these, transporting
HOLY CRAP ...I've NEVER EVER seen this!
Peter is so dialed in here.. just amazing.
AWESOME
Beautiful!
Amazing! Thanks
Saw them in Byron too! Nice!
thanks for posting!!!!
Jesuskrishna: I don't have the NSEW performance or the Milan MTV one, but I'd love to hear them; and I'm sure others would, too. How 'bout dusting off that VHS player for us!
The Church in its best period.
What a great song. At 3.21 I like it that the drummer comes in a bar late but they all see the funny side, should always be fun in a band, esp if someone messes up. Guitars are Fender Stat and a Rickenbacker with loads of reverb and a bit of delay or chorus I guess.
Que tema tan bacán¡¡¡
you got to grant the church this...they sure are ...unique
