This guy has a mesmerizing voice!. Heard this song on the original Miami Vice. Was just haunted by how beautiful it sounded!. Still maybe my favorite song to this day
Do we truly understand just how lucky and privileged we were to have grown up during this era in the eighties and were able to have experienced such great music ? Damn it was an amazing time. I go back in my mind as often as possible because this crap they refer to as music today is absolutely horrible !
I wish I was still there as well. It was a hell of alot better than the current insanity we have going right now. I miss the days when the world was not about to fall into a marxist/communist dystopian nightmare...
Yes, but my dad at the time told me the Butthole Surfers was the worst shit he had ever heard haha. Maybe as we get old it all seems like all new stuff sucks. Who knows.
1986 I was 20 years old I'm glad I was born in the 60s because of all the different styles of music I had it's way to commercialized now about who's the fastest drummer or guitar player.
This is one of those songs that kept me going for years - the atmosphere it creates speaks to a time of dreams. But I need to stay real, and so much of the last century is too painful to think about. 😢
I love everybody's comments on this video, because we all feel the same way- desperately desire both the return of the 80's and our youth, miss the great music (and music period) that MTV used to play, crave the artistic merit that was once the norm in music and has since gone endangered. The best acts however, still hail from the UK.
Such a smooth sound. Man, I miss the 80's! We may not have had the 'convenience' of having a phone/computer/camera in our pockets but life was so much easier.
The start of the song in particular makes me imagine just laying somewhere looking up at the stars at night, being hypnotised by the hypnotic melody of this masterpiece.
So remember the time. I bought the album The Blurred Crusade while at boarding school and saw them live a few times along with all the other bands we saw. The Sunnyboys, Le Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors
This song is so cool. Wrapped-up the '80s in a nutshell. So much crap out there these days (2K17). I feel bad for kids these days. Glory Days, '75 to '91. Shout out to those who remember!
As a young, innocent and naive guy. The one thing I remember about the Church. Was how far ahead they were of their music. I love them then. I love them now...
This was mine and my very first girlfriend's song. Havent seen her in 3 decades, but always think of her when I hear this. This is why music is such an important part of our life experience.
Ahhhh this song just took me back to my high school days living in PB Cali riding beach cruisers and skateboards up and down the boardwalk looking for parties! ❤ miss the 80s!!
So many great bands.songs in the 80's. General Public, Church, English Beat, The Specials, Echo and the Bunnymen, the list goes on and on. Haunting, rich music that gets inside of you and plucks at your heart strings for reasons you don't fully understand. What a great musical decade.
There is a ton of beautiful music, just not in the mainstream, much like the era this came out. Mainstream music was vile. Only once in a blue moon did something like this break through. Look harder, find the people making the good music.
I had gotten married in 86 and was living overseas. I came home circa 1989, and heard this on KROQ. I cried all the way down the 405, i needed this song.
I didn't live in SoCal but visited family a few times a year. I used to tape music off KROQ and I still have them. I break those cassette tapes out every now and then. Great times!
Do we fully grasp the extent of our fortune and privilege in having grown up during the vibrant era of the 1980s, where we had the opportunity to experience exceptional music? It was an incredible time, and I frequently find myself revisiting those memories, as I find today's music to be truly disappointing and lacking in comparison.
RUclips is also being killed, the ads are getting longer, more frequent. RUclips was amazing when it started, there's just too many ADS now. Next they'll censor comments, just watch
In 1988, I had flown from Sydney, to Perth, Auckland, Honolulu, San Diego, then El Paso, TX Stoned and drunk, listening to this album laying on my back and staring up into the night sky. I was living this album from blood money, the hotel womb, and setting that reptile free. Finally met the band in Utica, NY in ‘18! It’s been a spectacular existence!

1995 stargazing in a pickup bed listening to this with my gf who has since passed away untimely. I'll always have that memory of us. Real, yet magical.
Remember being in the States in 1990 on my round the world trip. Church was playing and I bought a ticket just to hear this song. Unfortunately there were no bagpipes. May have been San Francisco or LA. As an Australian I was thrilled.
I don't think they were ahead of their time at all. Give U2's Unforgettable Fire album and any Go-Betweens album a listen. They were an outstanding product of the time.
This band is stronger now than ever. Further/Deeper is an awesome album. I love the 80's music and now in 2015 i can still get that feeling again from the Church. One of my top favorite bands of all time. Yesterday/Today and Forever
They don't make bands or songs like this anymore. I miss the 80's so much. Still it makes it more special that only a select few can appreciate the type of words n music that captivate you n take you into a dream-like state. Robert Smith once called it "happy-sad"... the Church is one of those groups that gives us that awesome meloncholy happiness
this kind of music was when alternative was real. This is so classic and beautiful, this is a lovely song. This song, all the good stuff that Peter Murphy dead, the cold, The Cure, the class, and so many more. A beautiful time when this kind of music was relatively cool and respected.
yeah, and it was "alternative" because it wasn't on the radio, except for maybe smaller independent high school or college stations. never heard this kind of shit on mainstream radio until nirvana, pearl jam, etc., made "alternative" a mainstream genre.
1988's "Under the Milky Way" by The Church has two things going for it: Vocals and instrumentation: This is band leader Steve Kilbey's ode to the "The Melkweg," which is Dutch for the "milky way" in reference to an old factory turned into a coffee shop, a bar and a movie theater… The vocals and instrumentation with the guitar strumming is melodic -- soothing but not in a wimpy way if that makes any sense. Another words: It's substantive and gives you a chance to escape into your mind, if even for a verse or two… Certainly it wasn't a smash, peaking at No. 24 on Billboard in the US., but it was the Australian band's biggest hit… It's featured in the movie Donnie Darko, a bizarre movie in its own right and kind of ironic, considering the band is called The Church… Certainly a Big '80s staple in my book...
I remember sitting on a guard point in the Saudi desert and hearing this song on Radio Dubai...echoed in my brain for a good three days. Actually, this is a good memory...a few weeks later, I was on a guard point in outside Basra watching the Republican Guard swap tracer fire with insurgent Iraqi Army regulars (entirely too damn close)....
***** I never thought of that, but you're 100% correct! There was another incident where we were digging foxholes and Garth Brooks' "Friends In Low Places" came on AFR and everybody starting singing along (regardless of race or rank...everybody!) in this low, quiet, collective voice that seemed to carry for miles. I wish I could have *recorded* that one. It was downright metaphyiscal. Lastly but not leastly...have a good & safe holiday and "Semper Fi," with respect (from an old Army 'trooper)!
This tune is nothing short of resplendent. In memory of My Eternal Love, My Western Star, My Barbra Rose (in Heaven since Nov. 2010). And now, My Forever Baby-Love, you can hold a galaxy in the palm of your loving and tender hand. Come back for me very, very soon, Barb. I'll be waiting for you.
I've been listening to this song since it came out in the 80's. It's been on most of my mix tapes, and I can listen to it over, and over again. I never hit skip when it's playing. pagansforbreakfast, no, it's the angsty Grunge kids in the 90s that ruined rock and roll. Even darker bands pre-Grunge like the Cure, Depeche Mode, and the Smiths had this sophistication, elegance and beauty to them. Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn and co. pioneered into this mopey, simplistic, dreary new era. There were a few bright spots in the 90s though, like Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The 80's had the Best Music and alot of new movies, it was such a great Era and i miss the 80's, but have all these great tunes to remind me again of the 80's, I so love the 80"s.
A Collaboration of great 👍 musicians creating awesome music 🎶 for generations of people to enjoy forever ❤, Bravo 👏
The 80's was the best decade!
This guy has a mesmerizing voice!. Heard this song on the original Miami Vice. Was just haunted by how beautiful it sounded!. Still maybe my favorite song to this day
Was it on Miami Vice?
One of the most beautiful wistful songs ever penned or played
Definitely always takes me someplace intangible , to distant , dreamy memories .
I have so many memories attached to this song/band I cant believe how long its been!
Still *Extraordinary* after all these years (in 2024). Have loved this for so long 🤗🤗🌌👏👍🎸🎶🎤🎹🥁🇦🇺

the song is still just as astounding as it was back in the day. prescient and timeless and utterly fantastic
This song still is mesmerizing after so many years.
Such a smooth sound. Man, I miss the 80's! We may not have had the 'convenience' of having a phone/computer/camera in our pockets but life was so much easier.
And so much more engaged. Not just zombies to the tech.
Great guitar riffs
And damn, we had music! I wouldnt trade it for nothing!
Here, here. At time you could have a slash behind a tree, not have worry about at 4 deffent camera's. Zooming in on yourself.
@TTFPouyi @Jim Burgess Dude there was " the Rolling Stones " you have heard of them, haven't you? Paint it Black, if you're got z time, Dude.

Takes me back to my early 20's when life was easy and fun. Time goes so fast.
Same
I don't think these guys had a clue what this song would mean to us down the road. It is utterly timeless. Brilliant!!!!
This song is so cool. Wrapped-up the '80s in a nutshell. So much crap out there these days (2K17).
I feel bad for kids these days. Glory Days, '75 to '91. Shout out to those who remember!
I graduated in 1975. Don't remember much after that till around 2001 when I woke up to find I had two kids in high school. It was a crazy time>>>
If you stopped in 1991 you missed on a great decade of music in the 90's between alternative rock and the best period of hiphop ever...
I’d expand that to maybe 98.
Yeah the 90s was the beginning of the self-absorbed depressing shit we have today.
@@asherouk7308 80s goths ?
Late 70s post punk ?
Maybe even The Doors 'The End', Simon and Garfunkel 'The Sound of Silence' in the 60s.
I will call it... This is my favorite song ever. Heard it when it was first released, and have never grown tired of it.
Same.
Amen to that
Superb.. Timeless classic
True fact: You can't be or stay in a bad mood while listening to this song. :)
Well, I get kind of melancholy, to be honest.
This aussie band is simply great, im proud to be an aussie and i love our music to farking bits...THE CHURCH
One of my favorite songs from that era. Never gets old.
As a young, innocent and naive guy. The one thing I remember about the Church. Was how far ahead they were of their music.
I love them then. I love them now...
Solid band, for sure.
This was mine and my very first girlfriend's song. Havent seen her in 3 decades, but always think of her when I hear this. This is why music is such an important part of our life experience.
Well it certainly is part of Y music is extremely important in our Lives, and Yes, the memories Do become treasures..........T
This is truly one of the most atmospheric songs of the time. This song has a certain gravity to it. What a great and timeless song this is !!!
I love the “atmospheric” term. Most of my favorite music is in that classification, if you will…
Ahhhh this song just took me back to my high school days living in PB Cali riding beach cruisers and skateboards up and down the boardwalk looking for parties! ❤ miss the 80s!!
What an era for music
A guitar, some beer , some weed and a campfire under a summer sky. That was life!

Agreed
Definitely bro
Early 80s nobody cared if you smoked weed in the pub while watching a band.
@@grahamramsay2253 Sweet poontang!

Dont Forget the best band of all time; the smiths.
I concur
I loved WLIR-FM new music pioneers way back when, NYC area, here's their list of some of the best '80s tracks: www.advancedspecialties.net/wlir.htm
There were some good American bands around in those years too - and I'm a Brit! REM, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Talking Heads...to name a few.
IN the moment of writing this, 72 people don't understand this is the most elegant song of the 80s...
+Abel Israel Cruz Ayuso One per cent of any group will dislike something, even if it is free $100 bills. Tastes can not be explained.
Indeed, but it doesn't stop being strange...
I love both this song AND free $100 bills! I'll send you the address to send them to.
you can shove those $100's where the sun don't shine
I'll take Darryl's (unshoved) c-notes, please.

"Under The Milky Way "
The Church
Sometimes when this place gets kinda empty
The sound of the breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Lower the curtain down on Memphis
Lower the curtain down on me
I got no time for private consultation
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
It leads you here, despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something shimmering and white
Leads you here, despite your destination
Under the Milky Way tonight
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find
Under the Milky Way tonight
Under the Milky Way tonight
Under the Milky Way tonight

....almost 2016. those of us that were old enough to appreciate the music of the Eighties know that it was the best of all time. ....

Just mind blowing music when I was a teen.

No drugs or booze. The music is enough, by far….sad that you need that other crap.
New Wave music is the world's most under-rated music.
i think the best thing about it, is its not mainstream.
making it even more so special for those select few who have superb taste.
I agree... Seems like once the hit the big time they lost something special.. Themselves..;)
Rap is dead, I hope.
strictlynorton amen to that, brother.
pagansforbreakfast, no, it's the angsty Grunge kids in the 90s that ruined rock and roll.
Moody great song! One of my very fave.s!
Another beautiful song that is an example why the 80's was the best decade in music!!!
This BAND HADN'T HAD MANY songs make the charts but this song is one that stands out. Love this song.
Not many hits, but they are still recording and touring after 40 years and they are prolific with solo work too - Steve Kilbey in particular.
favorite song !!!! i love The church !!!
The 80's had the Best Music and alot of new movies, it was such a great Era and i miss the 80's, but have all these great tunes to remind me again of the 80's, I so love the 80"s.
It doesn't matter how much time has past. this song still rocks!
