I don't think filmmakers understand what Nikon is and was in the Photog. World. They're quite reputable and massive, they've just fumbled with the Video side for ages, but to write them off just because they're not that big in Cinema, ehh. Not sure about that one. p.s. fun fact, Nikon were the first to the HD video camp on DSLRs with their D90.
i actually prefer F-Mount lenses over Canon EF for cheap cinema lenses like rokinons because they adapt to everything including EF. there was also a time where i knew several DPs that had vintage Nikkor sets in the era of Red One
As a Nikon still photographer who dabbled in video during the analog era, I have been plotting a course back into video with the ultimate objective of moving up to film making over a period of maybe 5 years. I see this exactly the opposite. Nikon will democratize the RED film camera tech & the cost of high end film cameras over the next few years will drop drastically. This is a great time to get into video if you see it as a bridge to film even before this news, but it's super exciting now. Nikon will be the key to making that kind of upward mobility possible for smaller content creators.
I'll have to disagree with you in some points. Nikon isn't RED. They are a very respectable company with over 100 years in the business. Despite what other RUclipsrs say, Nikon is used and respected around the world. Even a couple days ago, Nikon will be working with NASA on their Artemis mission. This isn't the result of a company that is ligation trigger happy. In fact, Nikon has some kind of relationship with different camera companies. Nikon has also been very lenient towards 3rd party lens manufacturers, whereas Canon had threaten legal action. The actions of RED had given them a terrible reputation along with unreliable quality control and new product turnovers. All these are the anthesis of Nikon, who take their time and perfect their products. Nikon will stabilize RED and rehabilitate their image and prestige. Nikon has earned the trust and following of many professionals because they were the opposite of RED. Now I think RED and Nikon share in common is the fact they both live in the shadows of bigger companies. I think RED trust that Nikon understands their company position and believe they would survive in the long term under Nikon rather than Sony or Canon.
