Nikon doesn’t need to make new cinema cameras to win in this space, that’s not the point of this merger. People keep repeating superficial ideas this. It’s easy to see robotics + AI driven systems complimenting the RED camera recording systems. The idea is not to build a camera, but an eco system for film makers.
At one point in time Linus Tech Tips went from red to the Black Magic 12K cameras. Their footage ended up having some odd yellow tint to it, I'd of color corrected personally but when you'd working at their pace; nobody got time for that... And the file sizes of Black magic recordings are INSANE.
@@patfish3291 Reason #1 Why Linus likes the high end stuff because like me he punches into the footage and wants it to look good when they 600 in 400 or even 600%. #2 Predictable and "consistent" results every time always. Consistent results aren't as common in consumer level gear. Linus is pumping out between his channels about 3 videos per day. Editing takes far longer than the recording, they don't have time to fix everything. This is why BIG RUclipsrs use cinema level gear, it's not just Linus.
@@sparkestudio Simple geeks who think more is better. Let me record in 12k my show which will be completely destroyed by youtube already and the tech info will be obsolete in 2 to 5 years time, anyway.
I've been a director with a Japanese owned company for nearly 25 years and been through many a merger and acquisition. I can promise you there is a long-term plan for this acquisition. My prediction is Red will get the benefit of increased R&D and they'll jointly develop tech but Nikon and Red will continue to operate independently. Sinergy where it makes sense and optimizes cost along the way but Nikon won't swallow them...There is likely a 20 year plan on someone's desk.
I agree I think they will keep them separate as brands and just borrow red tech expertise to build out their videographer and hybrid technology, while increasing RED’s R and D budget.
The problem is the visionary and leader of RED are retiring, leaving the industry altogether, so there is no synergy for RED in this case. Once they leave, nobody will be left to run RED, it will simply be Nikon (and I'm OK with it because I think Nikon is very competent based on what I've seen of the Z9 and Z8).
That's exactly how it will go. Branding will be > "RED, a Nikon Company". The same as Nikon has done with Mark Roberts Motion Control and SLM Solutions Group AG.
Nikon buying RED will mean that Nikon now has a global shutter in their arsenal. A potential Z9h (Zh) could be coming in the future utilizing that global shutter. Nikon continues to impress with every new announcement
Yeah this is a really exciting possibility. I wonder how long that might take to integrate a new type of sensor... will need new software, too. It's possible they've been working on this for some time.
This is true, but it’s important to note the following: * Red global shutter is power hungry. So this sensor could not be used in a mirrorless body. * Red global shutter requires significant cooling… the bulk of these cameras is the heatsink and fan. I’m not putting down Red’s achievements… I own Reds; But the level of sophistication of Red’s Global shutter versus Sony’s is significantly less: * Sony’s new sensor is both backside illuminated and has a stacked design. * Supports the best AF ever seen in a camera… FYI: I own this camera… and the Canon Eos R3. * According to the latest test by CineD, Sony’s new A9III, which sport this new sensor has exposure latitude equal to Red’s V-Raptor VV. * Much less power hungry. Is able to run off the tiny battery of a mirrorless camera… And battery life is more than two hours of continuous oversampled 4K shooting. * Does not require a massive heatsink or a fan.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 I didn't know that, that sure is a blow to the idea of the global shutter coming to a mirrorless camera. Maybe a future camera like a Z9h will have better thermal capabilities. It'll just be nice for Nikon to have choices aside from just Sony
Problem with Red sensors, specially the monstro is : the price. Global shutter is expensive both economically and physically that's why many manufacturers arent using it on video centric cameras. I think Nikon and Red Will try to launch more Niche prosumer products as smartphones and midrange sub $5k cameras like the FX3 since that's the industry and budgets appear to he going for the next decade.
RED is only buying the global shutter, just as Nikon does. We currently don't even know, who is producing it and at what cost. Certainly much more than the sensor in the A9III. It is also designed for cinema and and cinema aspect ratios in mind.
Nikon and RED both use third-party sensor manufacturers. Nikon does not need RED to buy sensors for them from Tower Semi or any other fab. It's possible that RED has exclusive rights to a particular model of sensor but Nikon can also go to other fabs to get any similar sensor that RED can have made.
@Broskisnowski who said they did? Nikon designs the sensors & outsource the manufacturing. Nikon makes the steppers that Sony & Tower Jazz use to fabricate CMOs sensors.
The CEO of Red did an interview after the news, was very telling of what's going to happen. The main thing he mentioned is that the red ASICs are vastly inferior to the one Nikon built. So he basically said that they can use that and that means future RED cameras will have great autofocus. He also illuded to Nikon Cine lenses. And he also mentioned that nothing will change as far as existing camera support and firmware updates. It seems like Nikon is gonna leave RED alone and just give them tech to put in their cameras and maybe help them with reliability and manufacturing. On the flip side I'm sure Nikon might take some of their global shutter tech and will probably switch to R3D Raw instead of Tico Raw that they are currently licensing for nraw. No reason to keep paying intopix for ticoraw when they own red.
Regarding the what Jarred said about "nothing will change". He admitted that he didn't know for sure because it is up to Nikon. Jarred was also guessing. You have to also consider Jarred alluded to the fact that he will be leaving the industry: - The Raptor-X Global Vision camera is his retirement camera. - He noticed how happy Jim was in a long time and that Jarred also wanted to feel the same way. Jim has been away from America living in Thailand since 2019. - He said they got distracted over the last two decades building cameras instead of enjoying shooting and that is what they want to do again. - The day of the announcement, he and Jim felt the same excitement as when they first entered the cinema camera market. The "excitement" he was referring to was the outlook of retirement, focusing on being shooters again. So yeah, these guys are leaving RED, which opens the door for Nikon because quite frankly there is nobody else who can run RED like the RED of the past. Another thing Jarred mentioned was how different their cultures were. Nikon is very formal, with dress codes to wear suits and ties whereas Jarred and Jim showed up in track pants, shorts, a t-shirt and baseball caps. These two cultures will not coexist, Nikon is taking over. When Nikon incorporates all of RED's leading technologies into their own ASICS / bodies, Nikon will grow their market share within the Creator / Videographer space, then will use those profits to trickle up the technology to take on the Alexa's and Venices of the world.
@@raredreamfootage Nikon has brought new tech time and time again in the video/hybrid world with nearly no one taking a second look. Z6-Z7 were the first full frame camera to give 10 bit even if it was external. They were also with the z6 the first one to offer RAW video. Even the z9 and now z8 are vastly superiors to the competition as hybrid camera, did not revolutionize the market, a lot because of influencers always downvoting them. They have learn this time an time again and now just decided to kick the door of the video world by buying one of the most recognized video/cinema brand. Even if red lost some of its clout during the last few years, the latest global shutter Raptor tech is stunning, putting to shame the Sony A9iii one. So no, I don't see Nikon getting rid of the a brand name like red, after so many failure getting a foothold in that video/cinema market. Their lineup in fact perfectly match. The first Red camera starting just above the z9, which might get Red R3D video codec, that is widely use and hailed in the highend video world. Who will be laughing at a 8k 60 fps capable Nikon z8-z9 with redcode RAW??? They have talked in the press release about the red color science etc. You might be able to have same workflow from a 2500 USD z6 to a 30 000 USD raptor red camera. Nikon doesn't even have red to be profitable, they just need red to get into some hollywood production and general advertising, documentary, movie industry for it to be a net positive for them. As for RED, they will get access to the economies of scale that they can't even dream of. For example the xspeed 7 can already do 8k 60p fps raw recording of the Z9, with some of the best autofocus in the industry, and best in class viewfinder and IBIS. All this running in a camera 5x smaller with no active cooling!!! They could also have a full line of best in class glass on a Z-mount version of the RED, that might make the red a bit unique in the market.
My father in law was involved as an exec in a 9 figure acquisition by a Japanese company of a US company. What has happened is that the entire C-suite has exited is exiting as the Japanese company is replacing the entire management team with Japanese execs and the remaining execs can't deal with the Japanese business culture. The Japanese business culture heavily involves execs that were NOT rewarded due to performance or innovation, but seniority and not stirring the pot. Of course, not every Japanese exec is like that, but enough of them are especially in large, old Japanese companies that working with them is frustrating and the Japanese firm can't pay the old US execs enough to stay. It's as benign as workers dicking around from 9-5 and really working starting at 5 just so they can show their bosses that they are working late. The malignant part is when there have been times when execs have gone behind the backs of other execs to make decisions and then hide it from the team or going above their chain of command directly to Japan making the US senior execs actually their jrs. The majority of the US firm will move to Japan leaving some small R&D arm in the US and thus even some of the top end engineers are leaving. I see Nikon adapting RED's current tech, but then stagnating as RED becomes a Japanese company.
Sounds like your father in law worked for a similar Japanese Keiretsu company like I've worked for since 1989. The parent company bought 100% of the shares in our energy company in 1983 and placed one Japanese representative in our office to report back to Tokyo on a daily basis. We've have been been profitable over the years. However, with the recent chaos in the energy industry over ICE versus EV, the Japanese have decided to finally step in to take over and fully operate the company. In our case, a lot of inexperienced Japanese will be doing 3-year stints in the U.S. Everybody will be spending most of their time writing explanations on everything to everyone. Time to retire. As you mentioned, RED is highly likely to just stagnate, not immediately, but gradually over the years.
@@miked8121 Unfortunately, this is the situation with the most Japanese companies. Last years, in their abroad departments they are trying to take over and fully operate the company, but honestly speaking they are poor managers in general, and as a result, they lose most qualified employees, intimidate people with overcontrol, and the only thing that could happen with company under their management is decline. Not immediately, but quite fast. I only hope, that it won't be the case with Nikon and RED relationship.
Not for nothing - but Tony has never quite understood Nikon. Just look at his past thoughts on Nikon (Nikon should not make an APS Z mount, Nikon AF will never catchup, Nikon will go out of business). This is a ground breaking move by Nikon - this has a potential to allow to lead Nikon in the video/cinema/global shutter game. As with all bold moves - there is risk involved but Nikon has been around a long time. The rarely are the best out of the gate, but they end up on the top within a very short period of time. I expect nothing less with this merger with Red
My theory is that Nikon will use RED’s technology and patents to create midline creator level hybrid cameras that will compete with Sony and Canon. I think Nikon will leave RED alone, as Nikon really doesn’t know the movie industry, but RED’s job will be to be Nikon’s video R&D center, coming up with new technology for the movie industry and having that technology trickle down to Nikon’s cameras. Regarding the lens mounts, I don’t think RED will abandon the Canon mount, as Canon is a fairly well established manufacturer of Cine and broadcast lenses. What RED may do is do what ARRI does, create a method of adapting various lens mounts to their cameras.
Me too. I don’t think RED will abandon the RF mount. RED is a small company so they need the cash to keep investing in technologies, which Nikon Corp can provide.
@@angeloplayforone RED does not have to abandon the RF mount. For all the top cameras the RF mount is an adapter. Most of the high-end RED cameras are sold with the PL mount, which has many lenses tuned for pull focus. Let's say this video does a very poor work of actually representing the market, including all the parts where Sony is the supreme master of Hollywood. There is a difference between Sony the producer and Sony the camera maker. Finally, there is Streaming where RED is huge. You can search for the latest cameras used for Oscar winners and you are going to see more secondary REDs than secondary Sonys, and most of the main cameras are ARI, including some film.
Japanese corporate culture is not about leaving alone. Not even close... This might create a lot of problems for current RED employees, as well as Nikon itself. Unfortunately, Japanese managers are incapable to learn and adopt to modern business realities and requirements.
I aprove of about everything you said, but Nikon did not buy Red for hundred if not billions to sell Canon lens. They won't stop it abruptly but will phase it out and giving signal as they do so. For Example next Komodo 2X will come out with Nikon Z and Pl mount, the RF version will come later. Another thing to consider is that it is the older Canon mount that was very popular with filmmakers, because Canon has clamped down on its RF lens mount. And these Canon lens will be easily adaptable to the Zmount.
if they use the Z mount from now on, they can adapt (i think) every lens mount there is, as it is the one with the smallest flange distance. So it makes sense form RED to just use the Z and make all kinds of adapters from there
I have been a subscriber of this channel forever. I will tell you my (and many other Nikoners) impressions on your channel. I believe you are honest with being independent and unbiased about camera brands. However, I think you crossed the line where you made offensively negative comments/predictions on Nikon a few years back. It was simply beyond criticism, and it offended Nikoners. It also ruined your relationship with Nikon. Years later, Nikon is still here - unlike your predictions - and you cannot get your hands on a Nikon until months after release. As a constant supporter of your channel, I modestly recommend that you make a video about it and admit that you were wrong. Even if it doesn't fix your relationship with Nikon all together, it would heal your relationship with Nikoners.
I'm using a Nikon Z5 entry level ff with which I'm very happy, so these stories about the flap are serious nonsense! Nikon has crammed so much into that body that it's nothing but praise!
You're right, it sounds like you're wishing that a company you tend to dump on fails. It would have been better if you simply talked about the acquisition of Red instead of going on about how great Sony and Canon are and how you feel that Nikon is always lagging behind.
Yeah, the same old story here nothing of “breaking news” just trying to bash on Nikon ALWAYS, he has a hard time accepting a win for Nikon. It’s like an obsessive soccer fan at this point.
I went through an acquisition in the enterprise grade high-performance storage market. We were small, but fast-moving and technically strong in our area of expertise. Our acquiring overlords gave us access to financial and research resources that were simply unimaginable to us before assimilation. Moving in the other direction, many of our core tech competencies were leveraged in other business areas - a true win-win story. I hope the same holds for Nikon+Red.
What Tony said about Nikon AF was true till the Z8 and Z9 Firmware updates. I will now put my Z9 against any camera on the market today. Convince that me that there is a better camera… Auto Focus wise.
I love how much Tony loves business news. As a fellow nerd, I'm glad he does the research to bring us this information. I'm a photojournalist. I was once a complete Nikon fanboy, I've since switched to Canon when I moved to mirrorless. I love Canon's R5, but I'm holding on to my D850. I'm looking forward to seeing what Nikon does, and I hope the company has success.
@@Ghatbkk in no way did he "bash" Nikon lol. Legitimate criticism of past performance doesn't mean his praise of recent performance doesn't count. Fanboys are so desperate to feel good about their purchase choice that they can't take any criticism without crying about it. I've been a Sony shooter since 2006, and I plan to add a z8 to my collection soon because it offers good video and stills specs in one body. That's what unbiased users do, make purchases based on current needs, not loyalty to a corporation.
I also have a corporate background of being involved in many M&A’s, and today I’m professional videographer and photographer. I agree with many of Tony’s points that there will be challenges for Nikon with Red under its umbrella. But without going into all the reasons why, I believe Nikon and Red customers have good reasons to be pleased about the acquisition. But it will take time for most of the benefits to be realised, because it will take time to work their way through the challenges.
The access to RED video codecs without litigation has by far the most immediate value for all Nikon users at all levels where the camera hardware can support it, thus an immediate win. In terms of Nikon’s lenses , RED will push them forward in cinema, an area Nikon is lacking and lagging. For RED, instead of being dependent on Canon as a 3rd party supplier they can now dictate and shape lens design according to their own vision internally as a member of the Nikon family of divisions. In terms of culture integration, Nikon has everything from medical to sports optics, all of whom have a distinct focus and culture based on user base, thus integrating RED with its own distinct user base and therefore culture as another division should not be unusual in Nikons own diverse culture.
Noo, I don't think there's anyway Nikon will go out of business. They have a massive, invested user base and they're a Japanese company that doesn't really ever shut down but just slows down.
Saying Nikon AF is unreliable is completely absurd. You and Polin are obviously getting some kind of kickback from Sony and Canon to continuously dump on Nikon. It's getting so old and tired. Nikon could come out with perfect AF and you and Jared would find a reason to say it sucked. There's and old saying, if you have to continuously tell people you aren't doing something, you're most likely doing it. You always love to say you aren't getting money or gear from Sony and Canon. You say it ALOT. Rarely are your predictions about Nikon true, so those of us that pay attention to what you say know to expect the opposite. Just so you RUclipsrs know, once your channel gets about 1 million subs, we don't believe half of what you say. As far as some of us are concerned, you and Polin are not to be trusted beyond obvious reviews. Your reputation in the photography world is not good, same with your buddy Fro.
What Tony said about Nikon AF was true till the Z8 and Z9 Firmware updates. I will now put my Z9 against any camera on the market today. Convince that me that there is a better camera… Auto Focus wise.
Not become. Tony has been critical of Nikon for years. Still, I find all the extra information he dumps to be of value. The more perspectives we drae from, the better understanding we can have about this issue.
@@lesath7883 don’t forget to do your own fact finding though , anyone can dump a ton of Info doesn’t make it all factual . Always wise to get a few different opinions ;)
Still stuck on the Nikon autofocus b.s.? Those of us who shoot with Nikon daily know how good it is. You lack real world experience. Backyard shoots and park visits don’t count. Actually shoot something for money and get real experience. You can’t make assessments from behind your RUclips anchor desk.
Um I'm specifically talking about video AF for creators, so yeah, being behind my RUclips anchor desk is kinda the perfect place to be. But Nikon stills AF has come a long way, at least with the Z8/Z9, and that's why we gave them the camera of the year award over the Sony a9 III.
@@AlleywaystudiosNet66 Read his reply. He said clearly ‘Video AF for creators’. So he was referring to AF for people sitting in front of their camera. Which the original comments joke about, which Tony said that indeed in their studio they can evaluate it, as it is the place contant creators create their video contact.
If RED is selling at this point, they must have a good reason - possibly new developments in sensor technology get simply too costly for a small company like RED to keep up with ARRI, Sony, and Canon. Also, while it seems a secret who actually produces these high DR global shutter sensors for RED, they for sure don't produce these themself. Their patents are more regarding RAW compression than sensor technology, either. So what Nikon bought seems mainly software patents, which will continue to bring in good money, and a high end cinema camera customer base. A wise strategy for future RED cameras might be an interchangeable lens mount: dumping the RF mount fully means risking to break with a huge part of their customer base, who shoot both, Canon and RED, with RF glass today.
RF is done. PL mount, Z mount, and alpha mount can all be adapted to Z. RF versions may continue to allow customers to switch but ultimately Nikon cannot be hostage to Canon's very limiting mount. There is no enough glass to justify it on Canon RF and Nikon will produce its own cine glass because it is literally on their press release that it is one of the things they want to share with Red. The ability to mount Sony glass would also pull in a lot more Sony shooters looking for red video science but that are put off by having to by Canon glass that's basically useless on their Sony cameras. Maybe not the scenario nikon would prefer but one that the Z mount enables over RF. So yeah, Z mount is inevitable for red and actually a great thing for consumers and professionals. More choices, not less.
The last time I heard of a Japanese company buying an American company was when Sony bought out Columbia Tristar Pictures in the '80s. Have we come full circle?
I don't see nikon continuing to reverse engineer Canon's protocols and support future lenses or them making Canon RF glass they don't control for cameras they don't make. RF may stick as a limited option with limited support. I expect a line of cine lenses that will fill whatever Canon has in offerings. As for stills and hybrid lenses not specifically made for cinema, only RF cannot be adapted to Z mount, while everything else can, including Sony alpha. So I don't expect much attachment to Canon RF glass to matter long term as the options are greater using the Z mount and better for nikon to centralize on.
Oh Tony, Nikon has stated on their financial reports over recent years that they would focus on the higher end products. They won´t focus on high sales number, they will sale less products with higher margins. This merge with RED is totally in accordance to this. Also, Nikon is tiny compared to Sony. They don´t need to beat Sony, they just need to be profit as they are now according to you. Not every company needs to be the first in their field.
I appreciate Tony's experience, but there's really no gap between the Z8/Z9 in video capability (including AF performance) and Canon/Sony mirrorless equivalents. Where Nikon's lineup was lacking was in the video performance down the lineup (vlogger/creator cameras) and up the lineup (lower end but still capable cinema style cameras like the FX3 & FX6). The Red Komodo is already in direct competition with the FX6, so there's no gap from there upwards anymore. That really just leaves a competitor for the FX3 and at that price point the Z8 is just as capable on the video side. I feel like a lot of this video boils down to Tony understating the Z8/Z9's video capabilities. Throw as much of those Z8/Z9 video capabilities into a Z6iii and you have a direct competitor to the FX30. Throw a flippy screen and as much video spec as a Z5ii will take and you have that vlogger/creator camera the lineup is missing as well. Tony is right that getting two companies to align properly is tricky, anyone who has been through it at work knows how it often turns into a clown show so there's lots of room to mess this up in the board room. But on the playing field? This makes incredible sense for both.
Brilliant, because the only other company who can use raw compression is BMD. Without getting sued by red, like Nikon. Now that nikon isn't getting sued by red anymore and owns that patent. They can market a prosumer line, designed by red and using red raw. Other camera companies still don't dare using compressed raw for fear of getting sued. This puts nikon with only BMD left as a competitor. With the right prosumer gear nikon could catapult itself to the top of the heap.
What anikon now creating a "bridge" in the gap we see in your chart? Also, what about Nikon building a varifocal "cinema" lens. Another perspective is Nikon could just simply share the profit RED produces and Nikon could use that rev stream for development. How much did Nikon spend on RED?
You are missing one major point about Nikon. Nikon is not just DSLR and mirrorless camera maker. Nikon also has a huge manufacturing and development line in microscope for science and technology. The company makes compound microscope, fluorescent microscope, confocal microscope and electron microscope. In addition, the company also makes software for image capturing of these microscopes. So, it’s not just photo shooting company.
Just switched from Sony A7R series to Nikon Z8. It’s amazing - much better than what Sony has to offer in the 2k range (both photo and video real world performance). Most importantly they seem to care about their users, and I don’t feel like they are holding anything back.
For me, as a Nikon user, photographer, nascent videographer, and general progress enthusiast, I'm curious where this is going to go, but I'm mostly thinking, "heck yeah! this oughta spice things up and maybe create a little chaos! 😄"
Tony - your logic is a bit more sound than it was when you predicted Nikon’s demise a few years ago, but I believe you are missing now the same point you missed then - the fact that Japanese business philosophy is so much longer-range than ours is. They have a strategy that understands the market, and know they will move carefully, maybe too carefully if anything. 😂 But as with their entry to mirrorless and development of the Z mount that has produced spectacular success. The only issue you cited that gives me pause is RED’s use of the Canon mount, but realistically, that should remain as-is in the short term, realizing manufacture of these cameras is not a mass-production affair, and so it is very conceivable to think that both mounts will be available allowing the advantages of the larger Z mount, and as a cine lens lineup is built, to move increasingly to Z-mount over time.
GREAT JOB, TONY. You just took an M&A story and made it a photography story. I've been a Nikon photographer since 1969 when my M2 Leicas were stolan and Earl Theisen, my teacher at LA Art Center loaned me a Nikon F with the Action Finder & 3 lenses. i love Nikon cameas, but like you I've watched the company misplay opportunities one after another. I know Hollywood, (see my exhibition "Los Angeles in the 60s" now up at Galerie XII in Santa Monica) unless there is a new generation of leaders in Tokyo, I can not imagine them having the cultural flexibility to integrate the value that's on the table here. I do hope at least, now that my eyes are getting old, Nikon uses this challenge to, finally, get auto-focus right...jt
z mounts on red camera options would be epic... cause then you could adapt sony lenses with an adaptor and be able to use tons of lenses that are light and affordable... Also, if nikon can produce their own cinema lens + cine zoom parfocal lenses up w/ AF feature then even better... consumer friendly cine servos are the future and are needed in the market for live stream environments to where you need the ability to zoom in an out with ease whilst maining focus
Wait, they don't shoot films in 8k because of the big screen. Traditionally the only cameras that have been able to shoot 8k are RED cameras, those crop in on the sensor on lower resolutions. Most films are masters in 2k and upscaled to 4k for those 4k Blue-ray discs. That being said, we have more and more films in native 4k for those Blu-ray discs and streaming.
Shoot in 4k for 2k output. Shoot in 8k for 4k output. This is normal. But, point taken, Arri only shoots in 4.5k, at best, and Sony Cinema only recently went to 8k.
I see where you come from, but Hollywood doesn't care about resolution as much as everyone else does. Arri didn't have Netflix-certified cameras for a long time because their 4k was upscaled 3,2k. And the fact that most people who bought 4k Blue-rays in the beginning didn't realize it was upscaled should say a lot.
Let's say, Nikon has changed quite a bit recently. With free firmware updates and 60fps 8k RAW etc., not afraid of patent infringements. Of course, they needed to, they are the underdog now. This RED acquisition is just another step. Let's hope they have the resources and flexibility to cope with it.
Good video, I disagree with your autofocus assessment on Nikon. But to each their own. I worked on Sony cameras for the last 10 years. I have had zero problems especially in the video realm with my Nikon Z9 and Z8 cameras.
The Z8 and Z9 are definitely the strongest for video AF, but they lack the flip screen to be a creator camera and the attachment points to be a videographer camera... They're stills-first bodies.
Tony I will say that in this video you did come across as not a Nikon fan. For me, Nikon and Canon are my two favorite still cameras even though my current camera is a Leica M10-P. I never shoot video and for the Nikon D800 I used to own, I wish they had just left that feature off. One thing you did not mention and I would like your thoughts on; what if Nikon had not bought Red and Canon did instead?
Tony has been reporting the demise of Nikon for years… He has built his channel on this narrative and was the main voice in the industry espousing this false info. Even now he continues to double down on this narrative by trying to brand himself as an industry expert, when in reality he is nothing of the kind.
I have a university degree in business and his analysis was the best I have seen. First he analyzed the markets in which all companies operate and then their competitors. Then he mentioned the pitfalls we allready know in business science that lead to a failed merger. He also explained that personally he has been involved in such mergers. One of them is culture of both companies, which in this situation is a risk. He mentioned correctly how Sony as one of the few Japanese companies has managed this successfully but it took them many years from the 1980 by buying Columbia Pictures and other western companies. Afteryears Sony , as one of the few Japanese companies, has Westerners at the top. They managed of Sony Electronics for many years was in the hands of of Westerners, like Sony Pictures and Sony Entertainment/ PlayStation. Something that Tony did not mentioned is that RED is confronting heavy challenges as lossing marketshare to Sony in the high end Cinema marketplace. RED was the first one introducing a digital Cinema camera to the Cinema world, but is gradually loosing marketshare to Sony Venice. Something that has said wrong was about Panasonic. Every Cinematographers said that Panasonic products aimed at their high market failed. The Varicam and EVA has for years has not been upgraded till now no new users are using. This points that Panasonic didn’t even recuperate their investment. Panasonic is still strong in the broadcasting/ television world. Hence they are now in a proces of reorganization of their video department putting the Lumix brand in that department. So they can focus more on the exactly the gap in market that sits between Nikon and RED. What Tony wants is to calm down everyone who on RUclips says that Nikon will crush Sony or Canon. The problem is that many Nikon users who are photographers does not understand video and the video related markets.
@@sunlit777 Nikon has been posting record profits quarter after quarter for the past few years. For a company that is barely afloat, they had enough cash on hand to purchase RED outright. How do you like them apples…
Nikon buying Red could be a brilliant move. If they bring the Red raw codec to a well priced mirrorless camera, I would jump in line and switch systems right away.
Another tier of camera segment to keep in mind is the “owner operator” , mostly folks shooting the budgets between videographer and dop. They are still cinematographers but often shoot with very small crews and produce mid budget even high budget documentary. The solo but higher need in their segment. The c300 for more than a decade was a leader in this space and Sony (starting with the FS7) really took over here. The Burano (recently released) fills the highest end of this segment. Operators that want more solo build cameras but high end feature too. Red, beside their ranger XL series, Red has been an amazing fit for these operators and their Komodo lines fit their budget too. But for the sake of this conversation this is a great break down. Thanks so much for making this breakdown. I’m very curious what this will mean for the future of red cameras too.
Okay Tony, I'd not believe what you say now. Remember when you said Drones are useless? Remember when you said Nikon is Bankrupt and dying? And you're saying the Nikon Auto focus is still not good enough? "Turns out Nikon is really Profitable" really? Tony?
We never said Nikon was bankrupt. When the news outlets covered that rumor, we examined it and determined there was no risk of Nikon dying.... Basically the opposite of what you're saying. Re: drones, I updated my recommendations as laws and limitations changed: ruclips.net/video/mUR8O-o3A1c/видео.htmlsi=XtlnAk3ptEGmq_Lt And yes, Nikon's video AF is still not good enough for creators to rely upon in typical run and gun situations, based on our testing.
HaHa Yeah this dude is always speaking nonsense. He does good reviews on cameras but he always will find a way to shit on Nikon or Fuji and in the same video ride sonys nuts.
I’m sure Nikon has a plan to take Red to the next level. I doubt they bought without a plan to profit from it. Nikon woke up, and I believe they will dominate the camera industry once again. I have working Nikons over 40 years old. They are rugged, dependable, and do a great job. I have always like the image quality over the others. There were times I questioned jumping, but whenever I took a side by side comparison of images, it always made me stay. Sure all the innovative gimmicks are cool, but it always comes down to being able to get the shot and image quality.
you do have a problem with nikon. it grew over time, and it's so annoying . Even in your announcement in the short you minimized it calling Red budget. lmao I now think you are not doing it on purpose. you just went down this rabbit hole and can't claw yourself back. You need nikon to fail, and come across as such a hater. If Canon/Sony did this you would praise it to the end of the earth and back. But since it was nikon who did it, it's questionable. Believe it or not there is a huge world out there where there is life beyond Sony. And there are tons of people that just don't buy into the influencer driven Sony marketing. we all tried them for ourselves and we rejected them for one reason or another. And nikon is doing great. so is canon, fuji is killing it.. those GFX's are to die for!
First and foremost, Camera business is a small business for Nikon and it wouldn't ruin them should this decision prove to be bonkers. In fact this applies to Sony and Canon as well. Digital cameras are not a good industry to get in due to its slow growth and limited market size. This may be big news for photographers and videographers, but this is really a non news for investors in Canon, Sony and Nikon. What Nikon can do is keep Red as an independent divisions with the same management but perhaps a few Nikon representatives. What Nikon needs to do is simply and slowly let Red to use adopt Nikon lens rather than Canon lens. That is only thing they should do to Red. But for their original camera business, they can leverage upon the technology from Red to refine their existing products. In essence, they are simply purchasing a bunch of patents and know hows and their challenge is how to use them.
'Difficult path ahead of them' Literally ALL Nikon has to do is make an fx3 with compressed raw at the same price or lower and they will shake the entire market. I doubt that will take them longer than 1.5 years.
First of all, excellent breakdown of the business end! As someone who has been in the tech industry for nearly 30 years and spent some time selling IP, I get the feeling that Nikon is playing the long game and (hopefully) took this gamble to get their hands on Reds patents to develop next Gen products. Also, by owning the IP they can now go after their competitors if they cross the line and actually use the patents as a source of revenue. All too often I’ve seen these mergers do nothing more than kill the golden goose, hopefully Nikon and its Japanese culture will be willing to leave Red alone and reap the benefits of the investment.
Tony's Nikon and Red video turn to Sony and Canon advertising ."Nikon Z low grade cameras he said .Sony's amazing Zv1 ,Canon's amazing D70 autofocus ?? "Year 2050 :Tony says low grade Nikon Hollywood Cinema camera is worst than Sony A7s3 :D. Everything he says agains Nikon makes him look silly in public eyes after Nikon proof the opposite of he's propaganda .
Tony, you missed two kind of big things on your camera company chart: A: Live Video Production as a category and B: BLACK MAGIC DESIGN...it's odd to me that you included DJI but not BMD. Their Pocket Cinema Cameras have disrupted that space between "videographer" to "cinema" in your chart more than any other company on your list IMHO. I'd say that's kind of a big omission.
ARRI was not mentioned in this review. Where does it fit on your graph? Will this acquisition enhance or diminish ARRI's preference among top cinematographers?
I think we need to wait and see. Sure it can hit the fan but also good things can happen. I still remember when everyone was dumping on Apple way back when they were thought to be dead. Then they bought NEXT and who would have imagined Apple being as successful as they are today, certainly not all those people crunching the numbers back then. Yes this is not Apple or even the same industry but anything is possible. Before RED ever launched anything some people had doubts about them, they were a new company with no track record making promises that seemed outlandish. And RED delivered on lots. There's lots of potential here and I hope they succeed because this could be good for the industry as a whole.
Now nikon is the best camera maker in the industry. RED user interface is terrible. Dude you predicted Nikon is going out of business. Nikon has successfully acquired many companies in the last two years.
Providing students with Red is same as providing pros with Nikon F in 1959. Here they can not go to pros because they are already behind. Reason 2: Buy it for the patents and/or patents. Reason 3: Incorporate in Nikon Mirrorless and perhaps make less expensive versions of Red for medium price market. 4 I love my Nikon mirrorless and pics compare favorably with my M10 and M10r. And to be fair about this whole thing, I don`t care about video and I do not know if my Z6 2 or Z7 2 video function works and do not know what all the movie technology like 4k means. I am not new either because my Waltz Envoy was a birthday gift to me in 1958 and been through Pentax Leica Mamiya tlr, Rb67, 4x5 and all were pretty complete systems except for Waltz which was pretty simple and I appreciate that more and more. Quedos to Nikon.
I agree that the merger will require time to figure out the relationship, corporate culture, product roadmap etc. I was also involved in several mergers and acquisitions during the .COM boom, and while the transitions were clearly disruptive, we always found a way to forge a way ahead. I don't think they'll be looking to just jam Nikon hardware/software into a RED body. More likely the existing lines will continue and a new line of videographer cameras will emerge in the next 2 years using RED sensors, and new Nikon cinema centric glass and perhaps Expeed processors.
Why did you switch because of the Z-Mount??? It has the biggest diameter and the shortest flange distance = physically the best in class and the best mount to adapt all others without extra glas. A simple inlay or distance holder does the job. What's a flop about this goodies? 😂
a great idea, this means you can add the Nikon flash, triggers (radio) and Lenses to the red body, improving on the existing systems, and also making affordable accessories for the red, makes the concept of owning one more feasible, as the investment is cheaper.
Nikon and Sony Semiconductor are not competitors, as they have a symbiotic relationship. Daniel Loeb forced Sony Semiconductor to separate from Sony Imaging and Terushi Shimizu doesn't care who he sells his sensors to as long as he sells them. Nikon designs its sensors and Sony fabs them. It's a very positive relationship. Nikon even produces the steppers Sony needs to produce chips.
You know how Sony crossed the cultural boundary, by buying other companies. Sony didn’t build Sony Pictures from the ground up, they bought their way in with a 1968 50% stake in CBS, just for starters. Look at their list of acquisitions. Also, never talk about the Airpeak as a professional drone. At its launch it was 4 years behind DJI and is not a commercially viable solution outside of productions that mandate the use of Sony equipment.
I have worked with Japanese companies from an American company partnership before (MHI) and there are definitely some easy missteps I hope they avoid. Both cultures have huge strengths but combining immediately would be a huge crash for both companies. Both organizations want to succeed so I’m sure they have paths forward and can at least take step one in the right direction… they get to keep their cash by the loss of lawsuits and then work on a test project between both, leaving each organization alone…a partnership camera while each brand continues to flex their strengths would the best next step in my opinion. It will reveal the bigger hiccups with any other dabbling in each other’s cameras and potentially help them iron out those wrinkles as they find the strengths in that collab camera, which would be aimed at a missing niche, not replacing their current core competencies. This would be one potential approach that could help them find stronger footing together.
People should understand that Nikon doesn't even need for red to be profitable for it to be very good for them. They just need for RED to be in some hollywood movies and movies in general, advertising and documentary. This gives them the bragging rights, as who will laught at a Nikon 8k 60 fps z8/z9 camera with Recode Raw recording!!! While the Sony or Canon has to shoot some compress H265 format.
Canon can shoot itself. Not only was Red a source of customers for their lenses but also, Canon is not strong in high end cinema where Red Sony and Arri have a much better position. Why did Canon not buy Red? This looks like InMusic not being happy with Pioneer buying Serato and now blocking the sale. Same could happen with Canon and the Red take over because of the dependencies. Is this a trigger for more integration in the industry and Canon to buy Arri?
Sigma, Tamron and other lens manufacturers make lenses with different mounts and firmware for the different camera manufacturers (I know, Canon, smh) so it should be relatively simple for future RED+Nikon videographer cameras to have body options for Canon or Nikon lens mounts. Nikon has never had a reason to develop cinema glass before. Now it does. I feel Z mount cinema lenses could be spectacular.
It's just based on our own testing. We tried every latest model, over and over again, with feedback from Lumix. It often worked but it hunted or lagged enough that we couldn't trust it. The reps at Lumix are pretty open about their video AF tracking not being on-par with Sony & Canon.
@@TonyAndChelsea I mean being 15% worse than canon and Sony means it’s as good as canon and Sony from 3-5 years ago maybe and people were fine with it at the time. I get your over simplifying because it’s not the main topic but I’ve been using their new system for a year and hardly had any issues, let alone issues with content creation and the issues I’ve had is the same ones Sony and Canon would do. It’s not as good but I think we are splitting hairs (and honestly I prefer it to canon)
There are many channels I see that are using Panasonic cameras for their content. And their content looks great. Why can the folks over at Petapixel can get Panasonic cameras to work in every environment they shoot in, while Tony can't make them work for a still studio monologue?
A dislike for mentioning a Kardashian 😀 What I do not like about RED is that is became a bragging brand for wannabe filmmakers who can afford those cameras. Using a RED camera for a well lit RUclips studio seems like a complete overkill. The fact that a guy from a lifestyle sun glass company founded RED confirms my thoughts. That does not mean that RED camera are not professional tools that do the job very well. It reminds me of Rolex watches or Rolls Royce cars. Those are very good products, but they are often bought by the wrong people. If you drive a Roll Royce in Germany, people will assume your are a drug dealer or a pimp.
I would hope they leave Red alone, aside from utilizing Red patents in their Nikon cameras. I don't like Red as a company, but I know a lot of people do, and it would be a shame to see them fall apart when they do bring some innovation alongside their disgusting patent trolling that holds back the entire industry.
Hopefully they can avoid or resolve any clash of corporate cultures and arrange to use each other's technologies in their respective product lines. As their technologies have developed separately, there will be both cultural and technical challenges to overcome, but they may also be able to benefit from each other's strengths. I have used Nikon cameras for years, and I would like to see Nikon continue to be a competitive player in the mirrorless camera market.
Be nice if Nikon produced "Red" cameras at a lower price point, with the ability to use various codecs, like ProRes and BRaw. Also, Red has had a few problems, like the fake "proprietary" SSD which, when coupled with the price, limits sales to a small niche market. Those who can afford Red has them, and those aren't "repeat customers". The future of Red wasn't so bright, now it is.
I wouldn't be surprised if they do introduce something "prosumer" focused. Something along the lines of the Komodo but leverage what I assume will be economies of scale and be able to manufacture them a lot cheaper. Jarred Land, President and Co-Owner of Red did hint to this potentially be a path that Nikon will take in an interview he did after the sale.
reds codec will play a big part in this, i believe they plan on crushing the market in the creator center. Sony in the same section use to release one good camera for every 10 and as a former camera salesman I use to find it annoying when a very uninformed buyer would assume a sony camera was good because it was badged sony. what nikon needs to develop it focus speeds as manually focusing is the Achilles heel of todays video and photo creators.
You are really a Nikon-Grinch who is hoping for the worst for Nikon because they cut you from their Influencer list (or paid you not enough) 😂🤣😂 - thankfully all your predictions of last year's about Nikon has nothing to do with the reality and was wrong! ❤ if Sony or Canon would have bought RED your statmante would have been 180° in the oposit direction :D I'll tell you how it will work 😊 ... Nikon and RED will stay as separate companies. Nikon gets all RAW Parents, Color Science, and Sensor Production knowledge. Red gets manufactory knowledge, sensor stabilisation, the bigger Z Mount which is easy (without Glas!) adapted to Canon-EF and RF, modern technology like Nikons AF and a lot more AI-technology of future cameras. that's it
You don't just buy another company. There must have been a lot of discussing and calculating before this decision was made which means both parties can see solid plans for the future. Sharing their knowledge can create surprising results we haven't even thought about.
Nikon does have a roadmap for what this could be for success, just look back at DJI acquiring the majority stake in Hasselblad. Hasselblad today with their recent releases don't look like a Chinese knock-off or have degraded in anyway. Their new cameras today are amazing and continue to give the user that Hasselblad experience. So that could be the roadmap, allow Red to have access to R&D that they've never had in the past and continue to innovate and provide that common experience for film makers. Then trickle down software and hardware back into the Z system where it makes sense. And from Nikon's optics division, trickle over lenses made especially for the Red camera.
Please, PLEASE PLEASEEEE let Tony do more long-form content and let him nerd out as hard as possible, I will gladly sit down and watch a 3-hour episode of him going down into the absolute nitpickiest of details and to get his opinions of photography stuff
You predicted that Nikon will go bankrupt, now says RED aqusition will not work out. Nikon is a 100 year old company beyond the imagination of a youtuber :)
What are you talking about. Nikons video quality is excellent on PAR if not better than Canons, as far as the auto focus it's great. If at all it lags behind canon it's not by much at all. The auto focus is very reliable.
@@TonyAndChelseapost a side by side comparison Tony. I use canon and Nikon every day for sports photography and videography. Nikon is not behind at all.
Your forget the proffesional broadcast television cameras in which Panasonic and Sony sits in also that Fuji lenses for broadcast. Problem is that many Nikon photographers does not understand the video market. None of them could explain the market. You forget to mention Blackmagic and ARRI who are bigger then RED. Also no one cover the part that RED has been losing market in the high end Cinema market to Sony and Arri. The best partner for ARRI was Canon and not Nikon. For Nikon it is Blackmagic the best fit. The marketsegment of Blackmagic is more aligned with what Nikon need.
Could you tell me where you got the information that RED is losing market share to Sony? Knowing people in the industry, even though they are on the fringes, RED and ARRI are the main cameras used to create movies. My understanding is that Sony, Panavision and Panasonic are there, but not to the extent that RED is.
I think the bars were so small we could not see them for Arri and Black magic. As to why the bars were small, Tony didn't explain his method. I think it was more about who he likes than who is who.
This was a long video, so I didn't try to cover ever manfucturer (and I even say this). It's not that they were forgotten, just that it seemed a bit unnecessary for the core story. But you're right that RED has been struggling recently, and they've lost much of their good reputation.
@Broskisnowski I can’t see how Sony is bigger, Sony only has 3 cinema cameras, 2 Venice models and the Burano while RED has 5 Raptor models and 2 Komodo models. If you look at movies shot on these cameras, all three cinema camera manufacturers are well represented. To say RED is on the fringes is inaccurate. This discussion is not talking about broadcast, but, Sony and Panasonic are duking it out with Sony more established while Blackmagic Design and JVC bring up the rear.
@@amberhawke Number of models don't matter. Arri has two you can buy - Mini LF and 35, plus the 65 which is rental only and they are easily most used in the cinema world. Red usage had a spike in the early days of the netflix 4k requirement but both Arri and Sony have since caught up. Venice is making a huge push at the moment, and while still less use that Arri it is definitely up there.
What? You are really (still) talking Nikon is behind at Video??? ...You have the Z9! It's the only hybrid camera that can shoot stunning 8K RAW Video without overheating every few minutes :D ..Nikons AF- works since the Z6 good/smooth at Video and got now as good or in some szenarios even better than Sony/Canon who are not offering RAW . ...I don't get you? - is it really only because you are a cut from Nikons influencer list?😅 ...very sad! PS: RED is not only used at Film-Shools ...it's one of the most used cameras for Netflix shows.
It's still a stills-centric camera. No flip screen for the creator crowd, no extra attachment points for the videographers, no built-in ND, power zoom, cinema lenses, etc... I discuss these factors at length in the video; 8k/60 raw isn't enough to qualify it as a video-centric camera.
All new Nikon cameras can flip the screen up and down ...that's important for professionals! ...you forget that 98% of all "professionals" don't need a camera to see/film themselves ;-). That something RUclipsrs and Consumers do and for them Nikon will release the Z6III with all that stuff very soon. Most hybrid cameras have no ND filters integrated!. To film professional with a hybrid camera you need to rig it anyway. Mate Box, NDs, external Monitor, external sound, follow focus etc. I'm 100% sure Nikon will not make movie cameras out of their hybrid shooters any time soon. They will take some good stuff from RED's world, like the RAW Partent, Color Science and design their own sensors with the help of RED. On the other hand RED will get the Z-Mount (best Mount in class to adopt other brands because it has the biggest diameter and the shortest flange distance (it needs only inlays, or distance holders but no extra glass!) + new AI-Tech for AF etc.
@@patfish3291 Exactly. Every Red other than the XL doesn't have ND's either. Z mount is great for cinema lenses. With the very short flange distance pretty much any lens can fit with an adapter.
@@MB-ru1ud 100%. Tony says he has left Nikon because of the Z-Mount??? it's only the best mount (biggest diameter + shortest flange distance) to adopt all other brands (in this class) without the need of extra glas :D ...only inlays or distance holder are needed

A RUclips show like Linus Tech does not need RED, ARRI at all :D ...RED is a camera for Netflix-Shows ;-)
@@patfish3291 Reason #1 Why Linus likes the high end stuff because like me he punches into the footage and wants it to look good when they 600 in 400 or even 600%.
@@michaelspeegle8535 Jarred is leaving dude and Jim has already checked out.
That's exactly how it will go. Branding will be > "RED, a Nikon Company". The same as Nikon has done with Mark Roberts Motion Control and SLM Solutions Group AG.
Raw video for cinematography is the key, additional hybrid and ai based
This acquisition is as relevant if not more than when Sony acquired Konica-Minolta, which changed the digital camera market forever.
This is true, but it’s important to note the following:
* Red global shutter is power hungry. So this sensor could not be used in a mirrorless body.
* Red global shutter requires significant cooling… the bulk of these cameras is the heatsink and fan.
I’m not putting down Red’s achievements… I own Reds; But the level of sophistication of Red’s Global shutter versus Sony’s is significantly less:
* Sony’s new sensor is both backside illuminated and has a stacked design.
Nikon with RED sensors ❤
RED with Z Mount ❤
Nikon with RED codec for raw video ❤
Nikon and RED both use third-party sensor manufacturers. Nikon does not need RED to buy sensors for them from Tower Semi or any other fab. It's possible that RED has exclusive rights to a particular model of sensor but Nikon can also go to other fabs to get any similar sensor that RED can have made.
@@CLIFFLIX Nikon don't use third part sensors. Nikon design their sensors form the scratch.
If possible via firmware, I’d love to see a much better version of N-RAW, derived from Redcode Raw, in the Z8 and Z9 🤞🏻
@Broskisnowski who said they did? Nikon designs the sensors & outsource the manufacturing. Nikon makes the steppers that Sony & Tower Jazz use to fabricate CMOs sensors.
Hope we won't need NikonMags for that 😢
The CEO of Red did an interview after the news, was very telling of what's going to happen.
You have to also consider Jarred alluded to the fact that he will be leaving the industry:
- The Raptor-X Global Vision camera is his retirement camera.
They are also using Tico Raw for the photos, so I don't necessarily think they will completely remove Nraw.
Interesting take. Thanks for sharing.
Sony bought out American companies, and they are doing very well!
Like Chinese companies
Ele é muito orgulhoso pra fazer isso...e deve ter uma nikon embaixo da cama hahaha
I'm using a Nikon Z5 entry level ff with which I'm very happy, so these stories about the flap are serious nonsense! Nikon has crammed so much into that body that it's nothing but praise!
Love my Z5, does a great job for stills which is all I do, same size as an F2, perfect.
You're right, it sounds like you're wishing that a company you tend to dump on fails. It would have been better if you simply talked about the acquisition of Red instead of going on about how great Sony and Canon are and how you feel that Nikon is always lagging behind.
exactly and even if Nikon was in front they'd find some thing to fault.
Yeah the new AF update on the Z8 has been phenomenal. I noticed that too not expecting it to offer much.
What camera was awarded camera of the year last year? Oh, that's right - the Z9
any actual sales statistics to prove that it was also outselling its competitors? =)
And Tony himself named the Z8 as his choice for camera of the year...so what exactly is your point?
@@sunlit777 And that has anything to do with what?
Imo, nobody makes a competitor for the Z9 at this time.
@@ChadMoiMedia Kind of strange for him to be bashing Nikon then, isn't it?
I’m guessing this video is how Tony will say Nikon will go out of business. But let’s watch and see…. 😆

100% truth!!

What Tony said about Nikon AF was true till the Z8 and Z9 Firmware updates. I will now put my Z9 against any camera on the market today. Convince that me that there is a better camera… Auto Focus wise.
1000000% sony, the way they talked about the a9 will always makes me laugh.
Yeah only licking Sony/canon balls here, and trying to kick Nikon in theirs, this is disappointed, I’m sorry to have bought his books at this point.
Same guy that said Nikon was going bankrupt is saying “im an authority on this, trust me” 🤣
Yeah I know, he likes to bash Nikon and lick canon and sony, it looks like he doesn’t want for Nikon to thrive, super bias IMO.
I want some compact, handheld Red cameras.
Hell yeah this is a win for Nikon! Imagine Red sensor and color science for both photos and video in a pro Nikon body!
I have no Idea what will happen but that'd be my preferred outcome.

Actually shoot something for money and get real experience. You can’t make assessments from behind your RUclips anchor desk.
Why not? Gerald Undone does it and anyone working on a product using scientific test methodologies.
@@TonyAndChelseaAnd yet in this video you said you wouldn’t recommend a Nikon camera.
Sitting still is no test of AF Tony. You can’t spin that.
Have we come full circle?
the good reason is they were failing and choosing between bankruptcy or an acquisition.
@@NUCLEARARMAMENT I also said that was the last time a big important company was brought.
LTT used RED for a little while, but a while back moved to Sony.
They use a bunch of Blackmagic URSA mini pro 12K, as far as I know

Nikon's worldwide infrastructure and Red's patents and tech mean this is going to be good!
Tony completely lost me when he said there is not a single Nikon camera that he can recommend.
For that creator/Flippy screen segment.
Nunca gostei dele mesmo...
1.5 Billion dollar
I'm a Nikon using still using the D5600. Along side my canon, cant wait to see what's to come.
The 2 technologies seem so different, integrating them will take a lot of time!
The nikon z8-z9 Nikon camera are video cameras that can take stills. They even got rid of the shutter.
Not the case if both are deliberately maintained as separate, independent entities….under the same corporate umbrella.
If they stay independent, what's the point? WIIF either Nikon or Red?
You are missing one major point about Nikon. Nikon is not just DSLR and mirrorless camera maker. Nikon also has a huge manufacturing and development line in microscope for science and technology. The company makes compound microscope, fluorescent microscope, confocal microscope and electron microscope. In addition, the company also makes software for image capturing of these microscopes. So, it’s not just photo shooting company.
...and they make optics for manufacturing applications, robotics, etc.
And the fact that most people who bought 4k Blue-rays in the beginning didn't realize it was upscaled should say a lot.
wait a moment 2:33 now they make expensive cinema cameras? Two days ago you said "budget oriented" - can you decide please
Great move by Nikon and Red must think it is good to. Lets hope it will be a success.
Even now he continues to double down on this narrative by trying to brand himself as an industry expert, when in reality he is nothing of the kind.
just an youtuber not at all an expert
Wow....
Well Nikon is barely staying afloat and its future looks bleak at best. No serious video creator uses Nikon
@@sunlit777
Nikon has been posting record profits quarter after quarter for the past few years.
For a company that is barely afloat, they had enough cash on hand to purchase RED outright.
How do you like them apples…
Nikon buying Red could be a brilliant move. If they bring the Red raw codec to a well priced mirrorless camera, I would jump in line and switch systems right away.
Me too. ALL they have to do is make a box camera fx3 with compressed raw for 3000 dollars or even the same price as fx3 and they'll shake the market.
08:50 the whole video is well made, loved the explanation, I watched the whole thing, but was this graphic made with Microsoft paint? 😅
Okay Tony, I'd not believe what you say now.

And yes, Nikon's video AF is still not good enough for creators to rely upon in typical run and gun situations, based on our testing.
Can't wait for my next camera to be a Nikon fx3 with compressed raw in a box body for less than sony fx3 price.
you do have a problem with nikon. it grew over time, and it's so annoying .
Even in your announcement in the short you minimized it calling Red budget. lmao
I now think you are not doing it on purpose. you just went down this rabbit hole and can't claw yourself back.
Hope so!
All too often I’ve seen these mergers do nothing more than kill the golden goose, hopefully Nikon and its Japanese culture will be willing to leave Red alone and reap the benefits of the investment.
proof that tony said Nikon was gonna go out of biz.. Chapter 11 in his 2021 predictions video.

Nor was Black Magic Design, which is also a major player in between the "videographer - Cinema" realm on his chart
I have never seen high end cinema with autofocus lenses. LOL
Sony paid him more, that's why. Canon also pays him, but not enough to switch.
You have good judgment, Tony, and you do your homework. Thank you.
a great idea, this means you can add the Nikon flash, triggers (radio) and Lenses to the red body, improving on the existing systems, and also making affordable accessories for the red, makes the concept of owning one more feasible, as the investment is cheaper.
Very cool info thank you!
A good number of wedding videographers use Nikon Z cameras, so not quite sure that your graphic is accurate.
That is also my question. Why didn’t Canon buy RED, which is a better fit for them.
@@angeloplayforoneIn your opinion. You don’t have the internal insights to what Canon or Red has going on.
Good for Nikon. Brilliant.
Can’t disagree more about Panasonic autofocus not being good enough for RUclipsrs
It's just based on our own testing. We tried every latest model, over and over again, with feedback from Lumix. It often worked but it hunted or lagged enough that we couldn't trust it. The reps at Lumix are pretty open about their video AF tracking not being on-par with Sony & Canon.
I agree , I thought his comment about creators not using panasonic very odd too.
A dislike for mentioning a Kardashian 😀
What I do not like about RED is that is became a bragging brand for wannabe filmmakers who can afford those cameras.
I’m just excited to finally have red raw in a dslr or mirrorless body.
Informative, thank you! Tell me, in addition to the Tornado NKN program, where can I watch errors, camera region and shutter and mirror counter?
if Sony or Canon would have bought RED your statmante would have been 180° in the oposit direction :D
I'll tell you how it will work 😊 ...
Nikon (yellow) + RED = ORANGE 🍊 🧡🔥
Hahaha, I think the very smart people at Nikon are going to do just fine with this acquisition in spite of the “marketing director’s” concerns!
Reap what you sow Tony. You called Nikon going bankrupt.
I definitely did not. We discussed the possibility when the news sites were covering the bankruptcy rumors and determined that Nikon would be fine.
@@TonyAndChelseaallright...fear now???? Aff
With respect, this video outline is mostly review and very little integration/analysis toward the Title re: Brilliant or Tragic.
Please, PLEASE
PLEASEEEE
let Tony do more long-form content and let him nerd out as hard as possible, I will gladly sit down and watch a 3-hour episode of him going down into the absolute nitpickiest of details and to get his opinions of photography stuff
Didnt you say NIKON were gonna go bust lol Great take...
Z8 and z9 is not trustable in terms of autofocus? That is just not true! And aren't Red sensors from Sony as well?
Melhores câmeras do mercado atual: Z8 e Z9...sem dúvida
You predicted that Nikon will go bankrupt, now says RED aqusition will not work out. Nikon is a 100 year old company beyond the imagination of a youtuber :)
What are you talking about. Nikons video quality is excellent on PAR if not better than Canons, as far as the auto focus it's great. If at all it lags behind canon it's not by much at all. The auto focus is very reliable.
As a guy who films himself all the time, that hasn't been my experience with AF. But yeah the video quality is great.
One small thing LTT got rid of there Red gear a while ago.
Oooh ok thanks for the update
