I just think that Red realized that their scam with the raw codec is ending and people are not buying $50,000 cameras. They said, let's sell before it's all over. 😂
Nikon was doing great financially. Their main strength is they are always underestimated. Excited to see the beautiful nikon z glass on red. In particular the 50 f0.95 noct and 135mm Plena prime. Plus the potential for a z6/7 with compressed raw recording using red codecs is a given.
As a Nikon hybrid photographer, I think this is a big win for Nikon. I'm glad you think switching from the RF to the Nikon Z mount will be fairly low impact, that is very important for the video system. I expect Nikon to generally keep the Red brand, what Nikon most needs is to get some Red filmmakers as marketing collaborators. And they need to produce a Nikon Z8R[ed].
Nikon have been doing well recently due to becoming a world leader in professional microscopes. it is now by far the worlds largest optical company. Z8ths are also very popular outside North America .... which is 95% of th e world.
Nice positive video bro ! I think they could offer the red cameras in both mounts for a while ;). The old Nikon jokes are cute but they are fast looking silly as Nikon seriously ups the game . Also Nikon actually makes their own glass since 1917 . I think Nikon won’t mess mess with the red branding they are pushing for a younger market .
Yeah i was chatting with a buddy the other day, talking about the negative impacts the Nikon jokes might have for Younger shooters getting into the market. If you been around we all should know Nikon makes Insanely good cameras and glass, they just came up a little late in the video department. But can't wait to see how all this pans out.
@@cameranerdsmedia We're so fixated on "late to market" as if we're only going to be creating images for 2-3 years. Sony has an excellent business plan for the American consumer, "More, faster, more, faster!", but that can only occur for a limited time. Sony has already slowed down a bit, as the Sony A1 was released just over 3 years ago, which is a long time in Sony years.

Canon and Sony users may prefer the way their respective brand’s implementation of certain features but most Nikon user’s will tell you once you used and understand the brand that the resulting end product are on par and in some way superior to their main competitors…. Will the Red acquisition bring benefits to the Nikon brand? Will in bring benefits to the Red brand? I suspect the consumer won’t see immediate benefits, that is just not the way Nikon operates…
It's a stretch to say Red will drop the RF mount - that's pure speculation. This is a ballsy move for Nikon and I think both companies will benefit from this. Nikon acquires some great IP and Red get the backing and support of a much larger and enduring company with decades of experience in optical/imaging engineering, manufacturing and distribution.
I think this will be an insane win for both companies. I’ll almost bet the merger had some Red stipulations on keeping their vision but working with Nikon in development. It’ll be a good move for both I believe.
Nikon has acquired interests in a lot of companies lately. They then collaborate with those companies rather than trying to integrate them with Nikon Corporate. Nikon will not screw with the RED culture or innovations. They will NOT change the RED branding. They will NOT dump the RF mount, unless Canon removes RED's license to use it. RED may make the a Z mount version of its cameras. Because of the large dimensions of the Z mount, it can be adapted to any other mount. So a Z mount RED camera with a series of OEM adapters to PL, E, RF, L etc is feasible. Nikon could make RED a set of top class Cine lenses (branded RED).
Rumours of Nikon's demise were just that ... based on ignorance of who Nikon is and their corporate structure (Yes, they make binoculars ... and a few more things besides, including medical devices, semiconductor lithography systems and a *lot* more). This acquisition stands to brighten the future for RED. I'm biased because I started my pro imaging career with Nikon camera systems 4+ decades ago and made my first decent videos with a Nikon hybrid. I own the Z9 and Z8, both capable video cameras. The Z glass is terrific. Who knows, maybe I'll be a RED owner some day! 😀
Nikon has wanted to be in the video/cinema line for many years. They did the math to put a lot of money into resources or acquire an established company in business. They went with the latter. So, the future change would be (my speculations); - RED will eventually become Z mount, and RF mount might not be the future, though converters will be available. - Nikkor will come with a new line of cine lenses or a renewed RED line with Z mount. - Nikon could also have a few video-centric bodies and more budget options than RED, which will stay as their cinema line. - RED might also work with new sensors and codecs for future Nikon bodies, especially to trickle down the tech for global shutter sensors. - Nikon's resources for manufacturing bodies would benefit RED. - Nikon's AF is better than RED now and on par with Canon and Sony. So, RED's new cameras and existing lineup. - Nikon's philosophy of providing insane firmware updates might also expand to RED. Overall, this is a positive game-changer for both companies. The deal is better than 'RED', acquired by a manufacturer established to produce digital cinema cameras. With Nikon, they are most likely to stay as a true subsidiary and won't eat up RED.
In my opinion, Nikon wins the codec, already developed market and the sensor technology. RED gain good autofocus, a huge amount of very good lenses and already developed base for camera production. And for the future, they can release a shamelessly good product. But I think it will take them a year or two to adjust the two parts of this symbiosis.
