    Nice video! I feel like Gewa has a lot of potential, but it needs to work out a lot of little things to be better. Also I really like the style and editing of this video :) your quality is improving and I like it! 👍👍👍

    Also, modules just shouldn't have touchscreens in my opinion. One thing nobody ever mentions, is have you ever tried using a touch screen while dripping with sweat from playing a gig? Sweat droplets can actually press items on a touch screen. I never use phones, tablets or anything like that while playing because it is just too clunky having to use a touchscreen while playing.

    GREAT review! I really look forward to what Gewa will do. For that matter I look forward to what all electric drum companies will do with the tech that's available now. There really is no excuse for crappy interfaces, sounds, triggers, materials, hardware, etc...its all out there.

    Always love how you give us a taste of the sound of the raw acoustic drums/cymbals as they sound without headphones/speakers etc...rubber, mesh etc...also, for the rim dampening, why not just give us an option to buy another piece of rubber? It probably just slips on the rim right? Didn't see if they come off/glued on.

    Lesson number one, NEVER use wooden tips on an e-drumset! It will leave marks on the rubber parts...Use nylon tips instead!

  • @Rhythmic1
    @Rhythmic1 3 года назад +14

    The most surprising thing to me is just how bad it is. It seems like all of the cons are things that are really important to the overall performance of the kit whereas the pros are nice but relatively unimportant. It's the very definition of a white elephant.
    Btw, that is probably close to $1,500 worth of custom DW rack they are swapping out for three measly Gibraltar cymbal stands. That would cost you maybe $200-$250 with the tom mounts? Oh wait, there's a fourth stand for the module. Tack on another $50. Good grief.

    Great review. I tried the module for for a few days then sold. I didn't have the chance to pair it with gewa triggers instead I used roland, the triggering was sub par even with massive amounts of tweaking. The concept is great, some of the sounds were fantastic but in the end I couldn't live with the triggering.

    I feel like universal audio should make a drum module partnered with a high end drum company. They can have high end kits, but also their dsp cores to add effects and change things like preamps, compressors, and mics. Would be pretty cool to have a high end module that lets you choose a brand new top of the line dw kit, or a vintage gretsch kit, choose between neve, api, uad, and everything in between if you have the money for plugins, as well as whether you want it to emulate audix, earthworks, shure, Neumann, or akg drum mics and their positions. Could even emulate different rooms, stadiums, bathrooms, closets, small stage, perfectly treated studio room, etc. they could make it have access to extra features if you use it in an existing uad setup. Plug-ins can transfer. That kinda stuff.

    I like how you point out not only the positive, but the negative. When I watch reviews on some other channels that I watch (not related to drums, different topics) they only talk about the positives. That's OK, but it's not really an honest review if one only talks about the positives. (I'm not talking about bashing something here, that's different). Anyway, it's helpful that you point out not only what you like, but what you don't like as well, and also compare with what else is currently out there.

    Back when Gewa first started throwing this around it was backed by DW as the DW electronic kit. However they could never get the US rights hammered out and had to just go the hardware route. (originally they were DW shells). It seems like when DW's backing had to be pulled that's when this kit started having issues. The original had fully integrated software that was editable in the in-depth mode and also some good pre-sets that could then be further edited. Also the library they originally touted was in the neighborhood of 4000 sounds. I think this was a case of they had the right idea but didn't plan on how to get there properly. Here's hoping they figure it out, because they do appear to at least want to push the envelope a bit.

  • @ironjuan
    @ironjuan 3 года назад +2

    Not my experience with the triggering settings. Almost all defaults worked perfect, no double triggering or not triggering. I just adjusted the HH threshold and high level to adjust them to my playing cause I had to hit harder than I like, and I set the head high threshold to something below 30 and that solved the "hot spots" that effectively happened with the default settings.
    The curves can't be easier to change to linear or any other of the pre-configured settings. Not an issue.
    The UI things objections are for me aboslutely intrascendental. The UI is in fact far more advanced and intuitive that any other module based on buttons, knobs and a LCD that seems to come from decades ago with menus and sub-menus one needs a reference guide to go through.
    I find the cymbal surfaces too noisy and even with Vic Firth isolated headphones I can hear the HH hits unless I go up with the volume, which I rather not do for the sake of my ears.
    A cool feature that I did not see given enough credit in the video is the song player, where you can speed up and down the song and loop sections you want to practice. That's really cool, while the PDF reader I don't find it practical in the module.
    I got mine with a big discount for coming from a showroom and I am loving it.

  • @paultowns
    @paultowns 3 года назад +1

    Love the idea of the module but you made very good points. I prefer an acoustic kit with triggers and this seems like it would not work for me. I wish more modules came with percussion sounds because I like to make the cymbal inputs to be lots of different world percussion. I would love more options of ALL drums not just drum set

  • @demonicsweaters
    @demonicsweaters 3 года назад +1

    wow, that hot spotting on the cymbals is kinda awful. Not sure how they didn't notice that and fix it before shipping these things. The PDF reader is a nice touch though! Drum sounds are pretty good.

    If youre charging a Roland TD-50X price, you better have Roland quality. Also, aftermarket is a factor. My kits tend to be works in progress, and b/c Roland is the big dog, they seem to be the standard by which most aftermarket manufacturers operate. If youre looking for something diff from Roland, this is OK, but honestly, I'd go with Alesis or Yamaha (both of which Ive owned) after Roland. But...opinions.

    I work in music retail and let me tell you it feels kind of weird to sell these to somebody. They feel unfinished. The look and the module and sounds are really good imo but the cymbals suck ASS. They feel so bad and don't trigger right.
    I also feel like you have to adjust all the trigger settings very carefully and take a lot of time, whereas with a Roland kit you just sit down and everything works great rightaway.

    What I’d like to see is a slight variation of sound from the drums. Acoustic drums do not sound exactly the same from the first and second hit. Having the exact sound for any hit sounds too machine like. I feel you could do this with a modulation of some sorts. Again just a slight variation between the hits. 😁✌️

    Nice review! But tbh it aint weird to have no bell sound for crashes but have them for the hi-hat. I feel like it's something to do with priorities. It's not like you use your crash to make variations in sound when you're holding down the tempo. You have bells everywhere and your crash bell is probably the last thing you'd hit on your drum kit.

    • @mikosoft

    I bought the G5 and it was one of the worst drumming experiences I’d ever had with the cymbal hot-spotting and the bright, harsh drum tones like you described. There was no preset to use in Addictive Drums 2 so midi-mapping proved tedious and nigh impossible. The hardware was also unstable and folded in on itself a couple times. I sent it back and bought the TD27-KVX2 which works and sounds a million times better. It’s not perfect either due to the kick pad instability and some hot-spotting issues on the crashes but the digital features are a total game changer.

  • @992ras
    @992ras 2 года назад

    The only thing I could see with the zones is trying to get that real cymbal sound even real cymbals have different spots that sound different inches away from each other one spot maybe slightly louder because of we’re it is in construction you notice this more on hand Hammered cymbals vs pressed cymbals and depending on what metals are used.

    Hello friend, as always I am enjoying this video. My question is not related to the Gewa drums, but to the comment on the hardware. At the 4:40 time marker, you mention hardware from DWe. Just curious, we’re you demoing DWe drums 3 years ago? Thx

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  Месяц назад +1

      It's complicated. DW and Gewa were originally going to partner to make this drum set. Which is why I met the head of DW at the Gewa booth in NAMM years ago. DW was going to make the hardware so I think it had the DWe name badge on the stands. But due to whatever internal reasons, DW split off to make their own kit (Also called the DWe) and Gewa split off to do their own kit as well.

    Well, I think its a good start. But, for me. I would not consider any e-drum if they don't have all cymbals at 3 triggers. Even though they made the cymbals to have a bell, why did they not supply the triggers in the module?? Big fail as far as I am concerned. The only e-drums I am aware of that ALL their cymbals are 3 triggers (ride, edge and bell) is Yamaha. This is the only thing that stops acoustic drummers like myself from going to e-drums. I want my e-drums to be as close to acoustic as possible, which means ALL the symbols have the bells that actually work.

    It is very nice drumset. The only problem is the Roland "Digital" technology is not a gimmick IMO. I have played the 50 a few times. And there is a difference. It's kinda the same price as Roland and doesn't have the track record like Roland. If I was going to spend that type of money it would be hard to ignore Roland.

    the sound doesn't sound too bad. I think they sound better than the ones from the td-50. but that's just my personal opinion and i haven't heard the g9 through headphones yet. But what I find incredibly cheeky is the fact that there are hotspot problems with the cymbals. at the price a no go for me. I can only say about the module and the latency: the mimic pro also has a lot of latency.

    Hey Justin, it seems there no edrum maker that does it all well.
    So if you have a few moments to respond, and were to build a 5 piece acoustic-style kit with hihat, ride, and 3 crashes, which company would you use for the pads and which company for the cymbals? Assuming build quality, feel and sensitivity are the most important.
    I’d probably pair it all with a Mimic Pro.

Going throught the trouble with the wood, lugs rims. But cheaping out on the wood is ridiculous. They are ment to look more normal , but they all look rediculous. And EVERYONE does the same thing. Its so weird. $5000 + kits and they cant even make them look somewhat normal.

    actually a cheap roland module that supports 3 zone ride and has editable settings is fine then build your drums from an acoustic kit for the cost of some 2 or 3 ply heads use a multiple piezo trigger system on the snare for pos sensing and get lemon cymbals 13in, 2 zone crash and a hi hat controller , an 18in lemon 3 zone chokable ride, im also using 2-15in 3zone rides for crashes, and 2-15in 2 zone chokable chinas, and a 9in, and 11in for splashes and im all in for less than 2k then using superior drummer 3 you can make that kit sound amazing. Im selling Lemon cymbals if anyones interested.

    $2500!!!! WTF? I have a Millenium 850 for under €600,- And it's way way better!

      You are kidding. I just boxed my Millenium 850 for a Gewa G9 and the Millenium now feels like I have been hitting a plastic bucket.
      The Millenium did great for me as an intro to drums kit, but that's what it is.

      A DIY solution is the best route if you want an all-around edrum. You should check the 2box drummit 5 tho. You can have high quality sounds on the module

      But if nothing beats an acoustic set how do you hear them?..... 🤣
      "Nothing Beats"
