I've been listening to Sabrina's music since I was 12 and she was 15, which is around the time this song came out. It's easy to dismiss the messages in her older music as "basic" or "nonsensical" and compare them to musicians who are her age now (so in their 20s), but when I was a kid, this was GROUNDBREAKING to me. It's kinda the same issue with the Barbie movie speech and message. FOR YOU, who are in your 20s or 30s, it's not new information, but the 12 year olds who never questioned anything and their moms who are not on the internet 24/7 participating in sociopolitical discourse are starting to question things because of it. This song, along with all of her Eyes Wide Open (her first album) songs were the philosophy I lived by, back then. So of course, now that I'm 20 it's just a fun little song, but it's not bad or stupid and I'm glad you recognized that ❤

I was at her opening concert on her second tour, The De-Tour, in Vancouver, and got to meet her, talk to her for a few minutes, take a picture and get a little video with the two of us. It was amazing and she was super sweet. Right away I could tell that she wasn't only talented, but that she deserved to be a big star. She is quite short, but her personality and kindness were humongous. I actually took some extremely amazing videos of nearly the entire concert, as I was right at the foot of center stage, (and it was a much smaller, more intimate theater, so I was able to capture her amazingly.) How I’ve always understood the “twirling them thumbs” lyric and which it could help others that don’t understand or even hate it cause they see it as a random lyric song is like you said it’s about a corrupted system and the situations she is describing in the lyrics are fucked up situations that happen everyday, so the “twirling them thumbs” meaning is about a higher up position/person or like cops or government sees all these fucked up situations but instead of getting up and doing something about it they sit back in their chair, cross their hands and twirl their thumbs and watch it all happen and basically watching everyone suffer, i think the ones that are haters aren’t fully understanding the lyrics of the song. I'm waiting to see if my surgeon will say yes to surgery to remove a nearly blocked part of the 1 metre of my intestine I have left after many surgeries over the years since I was a child. To put it in perspective most of us have around 5 to 7 metres of intestine. I have many other illnesses that are in play and there is an 85% chance I will die on the operating table but if I can't get the surgery I will have a slow, painful death with no quality of life. We have euthanasia laws in place in my country which I'm not sure about because I've always been determined to fight for my life. Even if the surgery is completed, I may only get one more year. I was a primary school teacher and foster mum at 32 when my team of specialists gave me two years at the most to live but I've had 12 years longer making me 46 now. I lost my beautiful mum to stage 4 cancer on the day after Christmas coming up to 4 years ago. Then 13 months to the day I found my Dad after he passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep. I never thought I'd be the last one left and it's been incredibly hard to keep fighting for my life without them. Time will tell what happens but we all have to die at some point I just really want to know the decision.
