Honestly, I was waiting for this episode from the moment I knew Barrowman was involved with the Arrowverse, but every new addition to the cast was like an added promise that the musical episode was coming. I'm still sad they didn't utilize everyone they could have though

“Mon-el” (Christopher wood) and “kara” (Melissa benoist) actually got married in real life and have a baby and it’s completely irrelevant to this video but it’s kinda adorable
It saddens me so much that their characters can't be together in the show, but the fact that they're married in real life makes it slightly better. Haha.
@@Kelociraptor7 yeah I love that they are together and have a cute family! I love that they are happy! Though in my opinion I do feel like their characters weren't great for each other. Their chemistry is amazing, that's a given but with Mon-el's tendency (before going into the future) of not listening to Kara and not treating her in the way that respects her individuality and the need of her not fully needing to be saved all the time (this episode excluded), made me think that Mon-el and Kara had too many things counteracting each other with their personalitlies and what they need/wanted in a relationship. If that makes sense.
When Berry walked out to stop the shooting, he was filling the instinct of his normal life, being super fast and such. He didn't really think about it because he does it on a constant bases. At this moment he forgot he wasn't The Flash, he was just Berry Allen

Yeah Grant Gustin totally knows how to tap dance, he is trained in tap dancing. This whole episode is “look we have these amazing talented singers/dancers/Broadway people. Let’s have fun and show it off”.
The joke about Barry saying he'll "be there in a flash" and Kara scolding him is a long standing joke because Barry constantly says it in the comics, and everyone groans.
This proposal ending scene is one of the most iconic moments to Flash literally because of these two characters, as Barry and Iris, are just as important as their superhero and news reporter selves. And it's just one of the most important scenes to the show when you understand the context of what's happened before and coming after this. I've watched and cried over this scene so many times over the years haha
She said "when a show does a musical episode, not every single person has singing experience but they all sound great"....they basically did this episode BECAUSE so many members of each cast have musical theater experience. 😉
There are so many Arrowverse actors that have musical theater backgrounds! There's another episode where Barry and Kaitlin sing, and Joe is a singer in an alternate universe that Barry visited.
I never caught that the first time I saw this episode ... I just thought it was a nod to Barry being the Scarlet Speedster and Kara the Girl of Steel (huckleberry is a fruit, but it's also a shade of red that is mixed with blue, more of a reddish purple).
when you said Barry is a feminist he so is, in another episode with him a Kara he literally went "Let's step away from the nice lady and settle this like women" and when Kara looked at him he just went "what, there are more of you guys here then me" I loved it.
My favorite is when they introduce the two characters to each other. Kara is on fire and Barry goes to pay the fire and then goes “oop! Nope, not touching without consent”

that's very true. Supergirl is basically invincible as long as she has her powers but strong villains can still hurt her as can magic and Green Kryptonite. A red sun will also weaken her powers.

This is the first musical episode since Buffy's Once More With Feeling that felt like it really captured the spirit of what a musical episode should be. Easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire Arrowverse.

That point about how not everyone in musical episodes can sing is a good observation. If I’m not mistaken, every single person who sings in this episode has had theatre experience or some kind of singing background. The reason why this all takes place in this weird dream sequence is because about half the actors in this episode are not from this show but rather from spin off shows where they all exist in the same universe. Except some of the other shows dont fit the tone of having a musical episode. So they used that story telling tool to specifically bring in (either all or almost all) cast members who can actually sing!
There's actually a lot musical theatre alums in these shows. They didn't even have time to showcase Chris Wood, Tom Cavanagh, Amy Pemberton, or, if you want to go outside this particular season, Ciara Renee and Colin Donnell.

Amd Carlos Valdez went to the same University as Darren Criss and was a part of StarKid. And John Barrowmam has serious Broadway and WestEnd experience.
Liv ORourke Warblers is a performing group in Glee. Darren and Grant’s characters were once members. The hand to chest and swaying thing was kindof a signature move when Grant was the team’s lead.
I genuinely love when a none geek watches a geek show and actually semi enjoys it. Loved your commentary, this was actually fun to watch. I Laughed so many times. Yeh, “runnin home to you” is an original song for the show. Kara sings a version of it at Barry’s wedding and grant (Barry) has also sung it on stage live at festivals. Also Kara’s bf in the show (the one you thought was cute) is also her husband irl
"Running Home to You" is a running theme between Iris and Flash. The song was perfect for the moment. One of the best proposal scenes on TV. I think they did the entire musical episode just to have a reason to have Barry sing to Iris and propose.

@@bonkey12 I know that they're not related, and I have watched most of the show (I stopped at around season 5-6), but for some reason it's always made me uncomfortable how the love of siblings "blooms" (I can't think of a better word rn) into romantic love. It also made me uncomfortable how jealous Barry got in the earlier seasons whenever iris got with someone else although it's none of his damn business. I don't know, It's just a personal gripe of mines.

This was honestly one of the only musical episodes of a generally non musical show that I absolutely adore. And I know for a fact that it was due to the cast.

Grant does actually know how to tap dance. He started taking lessons when he was a child. There’s actually a great video of him dancing to Good Morning from Singing in the Rain which really shows off his talent.
Everyone is freaking out about the Glee reunion, but I’m over here freaking out about the Starkid reunion! Darren Criss started starkid back in 2009, and Carlos Valdes who plays Cisco on the Flash, worked behind the scenes for the first few musicals! I love that Darren and Carlos got the chance to work together again!
Yes, that last song, "Running Home to You" was the absolute best part of the musical episode. Supergirl (Kara) sings it for Barry and Iris during their wedding episode in season... 4 I think, so if you wanted to react to something short I'd recommend that.

Fun fact: Carlos (guy with long hair) and Darren went to college together! For Starkid fans, Carlos was in the original band in AVPM and co-wrote MAMD with Darren as well as was also being in the band for that as well.
Not only that, but they went to college with and graduated 3 years behind Pasek and Paul, which is part of how they got involved in this episode. Breaks my heart as a Buckeye that it was that school up north, but I can make an exception because they are all awesome.
Yes, and Chris and Grant were also classmates at Elon University, a great performing arts school. They’ve remained friends since those early years. Chris has an amazing voice.
The best thing about "Keep Runnin' Home to You" is that the chord progression is LITERALLY The Flash Theme, as in his Superhero Music. They took the 4 chords which gave chills whenever he's being a hero and added even more meaning and power behind them.
John Barrowman (Cutter) was nominated the Laurence Olivier Awarrd for best Actor in a Musical in 1998. He's also released several albulms. Jesse Martin (one of the dads) originated the role of Tom Collins in Rent on Broadway. Victor Garber has a prolific Broadway career and has won 4 Tony awards. As for the younger cast you seem to know their history with singing exvept for Carlos and someone else already pointed it out. But the older generation in the episode all have extensive histories working on Broadway and the East End.

Darren's playing the part of a comic character who literally teaches lessons, that's why his hair's like that. A decent chunk of these people were on Glee at some point or another, like Kara and Barry, or have experience with singing at some point in the past.

yes this is one of my favourite musical episodes, because they used every actor that had a vocal background in the shows universe and brought them to sing, which not everyone does, and it just makes it so much better
They didn’t use everyone, but almost all of them which is amazing! That’s why the episode is so good. But Chris Wood (Mon-El) has a musical background and Chyler Leigh (Alex in supergirl) sings in a band. But having so many musically talented actors who you have to fit into the episode and give everyone time is probably really tough.
grant startet out as a tapdancer and then had some acting and singing roles and its very funny how differently people react to him dependend on when and how they found him since he has some quite interesting roles an skills one might not have expected

Grant Gustin who plays the flash was in Glee in a later season. He played a bully from the prep school I forgot the name of. Kara (I don't know the actress's name) was also in Glee in an even later season. Soooo yeah they both knew how to sing and dance before this show. Also H.R. was referring to H.R. Wells. The guy that said "They're back!"

I was so sad when Mon-El had to leave on Supergirl but when I found this out it made me feel 100 times better to know they ended up together in real life because I thought Mon-El and Kara would end up together on Supergirl

They both seem to defeat more villains using hope and love and the goodness in their hearts rather than their superpowers. (Some find them corny because of this, but I think it's sweet. It _is_ fiction, after all.)
Kara and Barry have pretty similar stories. Both lost a parent or parents. ( In karas case she didn't know they were alive) Both have an evil version of themselves. Both are considered to be Earth's greatest heroes in their own respective earths. They also have the same moral code like they don't kill ( I know kara has killed however it was last resort.) Technically Barry has killed but wasn't technically him

I remember watching this when it first came out and I adored it, too! Like "Barry", watching musicals (and old movies in general) was one of my favorite memories with my mom, too (and my mom's been gone since 2010). So this whole episode really hit me hard with all the feels! And I totally agree, that ending song/proposal! Just amazing! I wish Jesse Martin would have sang more, since I knew him from Rent, and I can never get enough of Darren Cris's voice but everyone sounded fantastic.

The girl in this aka supergirl/Kara is played by Melissa Benoist who is also in seasons 4 and 5 of glee and plays a girl named Marley and the main dude in this the flash/Barry was also in glee and was most prominently a character in season three and he played a dude named Sebastian, and the guy in this that casted the spell and put Barry and Kara to sleep was also in glee and was a very important character from seasons 2-6 and played a character named Blaine

When this episode aired, I wept like a baby at that ending song. I love that they were able to showcase Grant's talent. But then again, they did write the episode just because they had so many talented vocalists on the show. That's it, that's why it was written.

I can tell you don't watch the show, but "Running Home to You" is laced through with references to the events in the series. "Can't say how the days will unfold," and "Can't change what the future may hold," refer to the overarcing plot line that season, where Grant's character, Barry, has seen a vision of the future where Iris is killed by the big bad. "You will be my light in the dark" refers to her role as his lightning rod, drawing him home when he was lost in time. And all the references to speed and running, like "days go by far too fast," and of course "running back home to you," refer to his speed powers as the Flash.
The fact that every person that sang has either been on Broadway and/or in Glee and you didn’t recognize almost any of them is pretty hilarious. Jesse L Martin was in the original cast of Rent, John Barrowman was in Sunset Boulevard, Carlos Valdez was in Once, Melissa Benoist was in Waitress, Victor Garber has over 15 Broadway credits and has been nominated for multiple Tonys. Grant is actually the only one who’s never been on Broadway, but he was in the touring company of West Side Story. That’s why they did a musical episode. A lot of fans were asking for one because it would be a waste to have that many Broadway vets in a cast and not take advantage.
Victor Garber originated the roles of Anthony in Sweeney Todd and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins. Those are iconic Sondheim roles. He also was Jesus in the movie version of Godspell.
Borrowman started out doing musicals and has done quite a lot of different shows (Miss Saigon, Sunset Blvd, etc). "He's really good, too." Yeah, no kidding. It's not as if he's done this before or anything...
"True Love's Kiss" You kinda have to know the story of Barry Allen and Iris West to get this. She is his lodestar. Her super power is to be his rock when he rolls. Wherever Barry goes in the world, the universe, the multiverse, the Speed Force, you name it. She's his ticket home. Always has been. Always will be. It's a weird super power and she don't get a cape but in some ways Iris West puts Lois Lane to shame. Since day one I've loved seeing Candace Patton in this role. She exemplifies the heart of Iris West. The writers sometimes forget this, but Candace Patton never has. Love conquers all.

This proposal ending scene is one of the most iconic moments to Flash literally because of these two characters, as Barry and Iris, are just as important as their superhero and news reporter selves. And it's just one of the most important scenes to the show when you understand the context of what's happened before and coming after this. I've watched and cried over this scene so many times over the years haha
I literally remember crying during the scene the first time I saw it.

This is the first musical episode since Buffy's Once More With Feeling that felt like it really captured the spirit of what a musical episode should be. Easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire Arrowverse.
OMWF was easily one of the greatest musical episodes in history. Still listen to some of the songs from that to this day.

That point about how not everyone in musical episodes can sing is a good observation.
If I’m not mistaken, every single person who sings in this episode has had theatre experience or some kind of singing background. The reason why this all takes place in this weird dream sequence is because about half the actors in this episode are not from this show but rather from spin off shows where they all exist in the same universe. Except some of the other shows dont fit the tone of having a musical episode.
So they used that story telling tool to specifically bring in (either all or almost all) cast members who can actually sing!

I genuinely love when a none geek watches a geek show and actually semi enjoys it. Loved your commentary, this was actually fun to watch. I Laughed so many times. Yeh, “runnin home to you” is an original song for the show. Kara sings a version of it at Barry’s wedding and grant (Barry) has also sung it on stage live at festivals.

Yes exactly! Its unlike other shows (Riverdale...) where they have the entire cast sing even if they really cant.
They didn’t use everyone, but almost all of them which is amazing! That’s why the episode is so good. But Chris Wood (Mon-El) has a musical background and Chyler Leigh (Alex in supergirl) sings in a band. But having so many musically talented actors who you have to fit into the episode and give everyone time is probably really tough.

Grant Gustin who plays the flash was in Glee in a later season. He played a bully from the prep school I forgot the name of. Kara (I don't know the actress's name) was also in Glee in an even later season. Soooo yeah they both knew how to sing and dance before this show. Also H.R. was referring to H.R. Wells. The guy that said "They're back!"

My favorite thing about this musical episode over any other is that the directors are like "We have enough cast members with musical backgrounds. We just won't make the others sing."

My daughter actually walked down the isle to 'Running Home To You'. And her and her husband have amazing voices and sing it to each other randomly when they just feel the need to say "I love you" through song. It's so adorable.

I was so sad when Mon-El had to leave on Supergirl but when I found this out it made me feel 100 times better to know they ended up together in real life because I thought Mon-El and Kara would end up together on Supergirl
"Are they, like, best friends? They've got good 'best friend' energy." I think it's more that they have very similar perspectives on life. They both seem to defeat more villains using hope and love and the goodness in their hearts rather than their superpowers. (Some find them corny because of this, but I think it's sweet. It _is_ fiction, after all.)
Their first meeting in the first crossover was great. No big misunderstanding death fight... Just immediately being friends.
Kara and Barry have pretty similar stories. Both lost a parent or parents. ( In karas case she didn't know they were alive)
Both have an evil version of themselves.
Both are considered to be Earth's greatest heroes in their own respective earths.
They also have the same moral code like they don't kill ( I know kara has killed however it was last resort.)

I remember watching this when it first came out and I adored it, too! Like "Barry", watching musicals (and old movies in general) was one of my favorite memories with my mom, too (and my mom's been gone since 2010). So this whole episode really hit me hard with all the feels! And I totally agree, that ending song/proposal! Just amazing! I wish Jesse Martin would have sang more, since I knew him from Rent, and I can never get enough of Darren Cris's voice but everyone sounded fantastic.
I didn't see anyone mention this but Carlos Valdes (plays Cisco) he was in the Starkid band early on for a few shows and if you want to hear more from him he sings the credits song in Twisted

The girl in this aka supergirl/Kara is played by Melissa Benoist who is also in seasons 4 and 5 of glee and plays a girl named Marley and the main dude in this the flash/Barry was also in glee and was most prominently a character in season three and he played a dude named Sebastian, and the guy in this that casted the spell and put Barry and Kara to sleep was also in glee and was a very important character from seasons 2-6 and played a character named Blaine

When this episode aired, I wept like a baby at that ending song. I love that they were able to showcase Grant's talent.
But then again, they did write the episode just because they had so many talented vocalists on the show. That's it, that's why it was written.
This episode gives me constant chills. And i still cry like a baby at the end😂

I can tell you don't watch the show, but "Running Home to You" is laced through with references to the events in the series. "Can't say how the days will unfold," and "Can't change what the future may hold," refer to the overarcing plot line that season, where Grant's character, Barry, has seen a vision of the future where Iris is killed by the big bad. "You will be my light in the dark" refers to her role as his lightning rod, drawing him home when he was lost in time. And all the references to speed and running, like "days go by far too fast," and of course "running back home to you," refer to his speed powers as the Flash.

The fact that every person that sang has either been on Broadway and/or in Glee and you didn’t recognize almost any of them is pretty hilarious.
Jesse L Martin was in the original cast of Rent, John Barrowman was in Sunset Boulevard, Carlos Valdez was in Once, Melissa Benoist was in Waitress, Victor Garber has over 15 Broadway credits and has been nominated for multiple Tonys. Grant is actually the only one who’s never been on Broadway, but he was in the touring company of West Side Story. That’s why they did a musical episode. A lot of fans were asking for one because it would be a waste to have that many Broadway vets in a cast and not take advantage.
Victor Garber originated the roles of Anthony in Sweeney Todd and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins. Those are iconic Sondheim roles. He also was Jesus in the movie version of Godspell.
Plus, I just remembered that Darren was briefly in “How to Succeed in Business ...” on Broadway.
Melissa also did Beautiful: the Carole King musical
Borrowman started out doing musicals and has done quite a lot of different shows (Miss Saigon, Sunset Blvd, etc). "He's really good, too." Yeah, no kidding. It's not as if he's done this before or anything...

"True Love's Kiss" You kinda have to know the story of Barry Allen and Iris West to get this. She is his lodestar. Her super power is to be his rock when he rolls. Wherever Barry goes in the world, the universe, the multiverse, the Speed Force, you name it. She's his ticket home. Always has been. Always will be. It's a weird super power and she don't get a cape but in some ways Iris West puts Lois Lane to shame. Since day one I've loved seeing Candace Patton in this role. She exemplifies the heart of Iris West. The writers sometimes forget this, but Candace Patton never has. Love conquers all.
