WM22 in Chicago was the last WM in an arena
The match was awful but it definitely would have been far worse if a regular referee was in the ring with them instead of Austin.

22 was in an arena as well, it was 23 and onwards.
He did save the match it still sucked he was just the best part about it and sltho he didnt stink the match up he didnt save the match either.
That match was hailed as the greatest match ever in wrestling history. The two goats.
On the History of WM DVD, I remember a producer saying following WMXX, 21 and 22 were supposed to mirror WM2 with reverting back to LA and Chicago (NY had already been ticked off with XX). WM23 was of course a celebration of WM3 in Detroit and then from there they staged WM24 at Citrus Bowl
which revolutionised the whole set appearance of Mania.
That Goldberg/Lesnar match was dead before any of them came to the ring. Lesnar was stupidly leaving for the NFL, and Goldberg was on his way out because of the Triple H bullshit. Vince and co. decided to be dickheads ruled by the old protocol of talents on the way out must be buried. So they just sent two guys that need to be led with NO PLAN and wonder why the crowd was dead yet saying, "Boring...Boring...Boring..."
Austin didn't save the match by stunning both of them. He just jolted the crowd out of a stupor that WWE did NOT have to put them in.

Austin with a beer gut was happy to be involved in brawls against Lesnar where he won. And to stun Lesnar and Goldberg? Icing on the the cake. However, God forbid you ask him to put anyone over though. 😂
In hindsight, it was a good decision that Austin didn't wanna job to Lesnar.
