- Mopar 400 build dyno tuning video. 400 Mopar pump gas stock stroke! Dodge 400 build using new big block Mopar Edelbrock E street heads, a Comp Cams Hydraulic roller cam, and Weiand Tunnel Ram intake. This big block Mopar roller cam is using Johnson Solid Roller Lifters! The big block Mopar Edelbrock ported heads make great use of the roller cam, for a killer combination. This Mopar 400 build is awesome! 400 dodge not a 500 mopar. Mopar 400 not a Mopar 500!
In Dyno video 1, this 400 big block made over 500 foot pounds and over 500 horsepower, with a stock stroke, and only 10.1/1 compression, using an unported Edelbrock performer RPM intake and 750 AED Carburetor.

Part 3 will include the #holley street dominator intake.
Part 4 will include the dyno wrap up, and prize winner for guessing the most horsepower and torque!

Gotta love a tunnel ram!!!!
Yea buddy! The right Carbs and add big numbers
Very impressive numbers for an engine that didn't even make 200 horsepower from the factory.
I reckon it's all in the compression. The 400's of the mid-seventies would have looked enviously at the compression of a Briggs & Stratton.
Thanks Aaron. This was a 2 barrel beater at one point
Yea. Same result iv had with those intakes.
They work! Well.
Yea sir 🫡
congratualtions, great series, amazing results. Really did the MOPAR guys proud
Thanks Tom!
Long runners=torque!!
Facts
That's short stroke revs so quick. Love them 383 & 400's
And hidden torque! How many times have you heard that they can’t make torque without revving? This one has over 500 foot pounds from 3,800-4,900
The Street Dominator won't touch the TR, I still wanna see it try tho.. Very nice build Joe. 🍻
You’re going to be surprised in the next two videos! I love the TR. with better carbs, it’ll be a menace
@@JustMoparJoe Really ?... cool. Looking forward to it. 👍
Dang Son! That there is solid preforming 400!
… so yer within 50hp/ 80tq, and yer ‘bout 200lbs lighter.
Would make a helluva race if a guy could learn to hit the tree in 6 months.
219 days….
@@johnwilburn hope I can put the battery back in my car by then.
Thanks Mark! Definitely happening this year!
DAMN good power and torque ! Very similar numbers to that 440 max wedge on Nick's Garage
Thanks John! There’s actually more left! Nicks engine has more cubes and way more heads than this. I’m trying to punch up!
Now we can understand why Mopar were testing their purple cam in a 400 !!!
"Holy molecular fuel atoms Batman!" "Wouldn't miss this high velocity show for anything" I'm "TUNED IN" at the same "BAT TIME", same "BAT CHANNEL"! Wouldn't a tunnel rammed Batmobile have been the ticket? "POW!"
Boom pow boom!
The street dominator intakes pick up quite a bit if you weld up the spread bore pattern to a square bore type pattern. But they’re such a good piece that the Mopar Performance B intake is just an improved version of it. Holley put a LOT of R&D time into the street dominator intakes.
Check out part 3. Definitely worth the watch.
That's what I love of the Holley Dominator intake , it's ThermoQuad Friendly !!!
This is gonna be fun!!!
Absolutely!
Love them 400's :)
Thanks brother
She’s a runner! So much fun to drive on the street with all that power.
Thanks brother. Should have a good 60’ with the right converter
Your dyno curves scream either a valve train or ignition issue the way the power drops so fast over 5700. If it did not have an issue it would carry much better.
Check out part 3, with the single plane intake. Peak power moves to 6,000 rpm. I’m pitching the distributor, when the engine goes in car. I may try out a chassis dyno after that, to compare.
Truly the 340 of the big block wedge family. I think the TR is as good as it’s going to get this side of a modified Edelbrock STR-15 or a sheet metal intake. There’s probably more on the table with a pair of 650-700CFM 4150 carburetors. But that’s a very happy combination, great job!
Thank you! I agree on the carbs. I have access to a pair to try at the track
I’m ready

Tunnel rams definitely have some advantages! Might have to put one my old pickup's 318.
Yes it does! Thanks brother

I can’t believe he though it was going to LOSE torque….
I’m there. It was a beast
Ha ha ha I knew as soon as I heard his predictions that he's never worked with one of these old intakes before and he was pleasantly surprised 👌🏻
I got one for my 383 and one for my 440 😏
You nailed that! They’re getting very hard to find for low deck engines
Awesome! Especially the flat torque curve with the tunnel ram. I think if you went with the TR in your Barracuda you would want to give a lot of thought to converter selection & rear gearing to take advantage of it. I asked in my long winded reply to your comment on the stroker build video how much idle vacuum the 400 is making & I'm still curious. If you recall kindly let us know. I don't think it would differ much with any of the intake manifolds.
Thanks Gavin. I will check it out with a gauge whenever I get it in the car. We never fooled with the vacuum levels at idle, because all the tests were at wide open throttle. I would bet it has good vacuum at idle with the cam specs.
@@JustMoparJoe Thanks, Joe. I will remind you when you post up a video with the engine in the car. As I mentioned, vacuum will be a critical parameter as I plan this build. I want my wife to be able to drive the car without her being obviously aware that it is a hot rod -until the fun pedal is depressed beyond halfway.

A set of 915 heads, Doug Thorley Headers, strip kit for the thermoquad carburetor, did some work on the electronic ignition!

Motor sounds great joe , great head work and machine work is what's needed to make big power and torque and you have the best of both worlds my friend with that motor, and Ed's machine is the right choice to make with any engine make or model his knowledge always astounds me any time I talk to him , this motor couldn't have been in better hands, thanks for sharing with us this has been very exciting
Thanks Terry. Ed gave me the best platform to do anything with. It’s really shown in a low-mid compression combo like this with the relatively small cam, and short stroke. Maybe We will convert you to using Mopars in those mustangs 😜

Great job Joe!
Thanks Andy! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I'm sorry, I'm about 2 minutes into this video and I'm not liking what the dyno operator is saying and predicting what will happen with the tunnel ram. I understand that there's a common myth that tunnel rams are for high RPM, but that is a myth. (Just look at the first graph.) But someone who supposedly knows engines enough to be a dyno operator should know better. Longer runners tend to produce higher low to mid-range torque. They can also sometimes push up the RPM peak for horsepower.
However, Joe I suspect that you already knew that before he opened his mouth. 😆
Thanks brother. I agree,my life of seeing tunnel rams on the racetrack says the same. Aaron was helpful with the dyno and is very familiar with it. But he’s not familiar with big block mopars. The other myth is that the short stroke of the 383/400 can’t produce the torque that a 440 can. I think we are crushing that one too! Hope you check out parts 3 and 4. I promise it all gets better!
I'm kicking myself now, I gave away a 400 and 727 in a VH Valiant pacer, back in the 90s in New Zealand, the only big block I owned... gave away a 225 VC wagon aswell biggest regret of my life... what a fucking clown.. love the MoPar's👌💯
I have a hard time trusting a man who thinks that a tunnel ram will make less torque than a Performer RPM. It's as if he doesn't know a thing about high performance intake manifolds.
Great numbers but I bet those valve springs aren’t very good.
The power drops off way too fast at upper rpm
With that Cam and solid lifters it should rev better and peak around 6200 and carry to 65/6800 no problem.
I would call PAC and get a good set of springs
I’m not saying it’s not possible, but it’s not probable. I tossed the edelbrock springs and Ed installed some new crane springs. 165# @1.86" and 400# @.540" so easy on parts.
If it’s not valve springs maybe it’s the push rods whipping. Something definitely causing an issue at higher rpms.

Well said! Thanks for your work on the block and heads. It’s definitely part of the secret recipe 👍🏼

Joe what bad to bone great running engine….
WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! This motor is BRUTAL!!!!! I am wondering if it might see more power with a larger primary tube?? I'd also play with the timing a little with each change. Not that making 1 2 3 HP is a huge thing, but when you are sitting on the line against another who is tough to beat, you will be wishing for just a few more ponies!!! lol..... Racing is great, but racing all day AND bringing home the purse, well, that's ALL OF IT!!!!! ;)
Thanks Steve. It does get better! I’m hiding the rookie dyno mistake that cost me big time. As for timing, I would like to restart with it at the racetrack, just like I would before dyno time. Same with carb jetting.
Right on bud! Lookin great! Tunnel ram for the win!
Thanks, Joe! Dynos are super fun. This was my first time, as most can tell. Glad I showed up with one that made the dyno guy excited to see! Theres more in this old girl!

The weiand tunnelram will be best. The heads need to be ported. Also a couple 850's would be interesting to try.
I think the heads were ported, I thought when the heads were at Ed's machine, he did a lot of work, including some port work.
@@bertgrau3934 fair enough. Thats were I would go. I believe thats were more power is hiding.
Thanks brother. The cam is truly holding it back. Carbs would be a bonus as well. Could you imagine a 400 making nearly 600 foot pounds 600 hp with 10.1/1 compression?
I didn't think with the tunnel ram the torque numbers would be that good either looks like a pretty good combination I guessed 530 horse 465 torque wonder what a crank scraper would do and using a thinner oil
Thanks Robert. I am using a windage tray, and 5w30 oil currently.
Great video!!! I am quite surprised how that tunnel ram squashed the performer RPM on torque, I would have thought otherwise. Great job on the engine build.
longer runners make more torque below 5000.
@@SweatyFatGuy I get it and it's well known, but typically a straight shot tunnel loses a wee bit of torque
@@gregtough9055 it depends on how big the port is in relation to the cid of the engine, the opening events of the camshaft, and how much velocity it can make.
With a Pontiac increasing the size of the ports increases torque everywhere in the rpm range in engines 389ci and larger. Its so pronounced that one of my engines, a 467 pump gas build with a solid 270/279@.050 110LSA cam was making over 650ftlbs at 3000rpm and carrying it to 5500. Put that cam in almost any other engine, especially one with short runners like small blocks and B/RB wedges and its not going to come anywhere near making that much torque anywhere in the RPM range.
The old cross rams made Pontiac like torque on the B/RB engines, they have very long runners.
There is a lot going on with airflow through ports and intake manifolds.
Thanks Greg! I needed some of your carbs on here
Running good Joe , Now think how good it would be running with the heads ported and a nice pair of mechanical Holleys ! Did you look at plugs for fuel distribution ?
Yes sir. We did it the old school way. I didn’t plan to do much tuning with the tunnel ram, because I didn’t really want to run it in the car. But was a fun test.
Tunnel ram porting video was excellent, good approach to port work, I’m sure there was some nice gains there , those old school long runners always did well with the toque curve, keeping your gearing and convertor in the sweet spot will be the ticket. I’ve ran couple sets of the e streets the 75 cc and the 84 cc both did well with a little work for the price.
Thank you! I talked with Andy Wood about it before and after. We both agree that a lot of tunnel ram carbs would be killer
Ya it’s hard to beat a true mech sec double pump 4150 set up right on a tunnel ram set up.
that's cheating, cold heads, hot oil!
Haha! Almost like those guys who run methanol injection!

Hey Joe, I posted this 8 months ago about putin 440 heads on a 400,I said to do it you had to use a 440 intake because I did it in 80 on a 73 charger 400 I owned. It was very fast, Blake said I was wrong about the intake, what did you have to use, 440 or 400 intake? Sounds great and gd numbers buddy
Thanks Dizzee! You’ll be one of the first people to see the engine run in the car! As for the intake, you can use the 383/400 intake on a 440 with the adapters, but the 440 intake is too wide for a 383 or a 400. Hope that helps.
I have a 72 Charger ..New 400... I used an Edelbrock RPM intake #7186 and an Edelbrock Carb # 1407... I have heads from 383/400/440 and they all work on a 400....... Just installed Lokar kickdown.......best idea yet
Awesome job Joe, your channel is number one in Mopar world 🌎!
Wow, thanks! I appreciate that. Hope to keep on rocking👍🏼
Joe, do you use any kind of software to analyze your car's performance? You know, the kind that considers gear ratios, stall speed, and vehicle weight in combination with torque curves and what you had for breakfast?
I do not. I had data logger in conjunction with tuner studio for my 70 challenger. It was fun to see the difference in modifications in fuel and timing. Would be awesome to use on the racecar
When I had my SRT-4 I datalogged it extensively, especially when the boost went over 20(!) lbs, as I wanted a good record of exactly when it blew up.
I was reading an article called "The Great Torque vs. Horsepower Debate" by Jeff Smith and he used some software that he referred to as "Quarter, Pro." The article is online at streetmusclemag and was a good read!

Same here. I wanted to build a 400 simply because it's a lot of cubes in a short package. Far easier to hide a monster without a scoop!! (Don't be crazy, I lived in Western NY and there was zero left of the bodies)!! I sent a Demon to the crusher too!
