Gotta be in my top faves of your adventures yet. Pure Gus solo in the deep woods, with gear tips, nature lessons, expert log crossings, crystal slow mo + music cues, hockey hair, strong title, beautiful rare fish. Lacks only a bear chase. Your love for this stuff shines in each shot.
Oh man, that is THE best description summary of a true FGF adventure video as I've heard yet. hahaha! Excellent feedback. Glad you liked it. It's a truly magical area and the section of water I found is hardly visited. Just Wow, right?! Blessed day indeed. "I am pleased." haha! =)
@@fishandflywithgusI’m not expecting a reply but I would like to visit that area sometime this year, are most of the tributaries good fishing about the time of year this video was put up?
Thanks for sharing this amazing place and beautiful wild fish! Makes me want to get back up in those remote locations, amazing country and we're so lucky to have these areas to explore and fish!
Another great video. I'm getting caught up on older videos. Glad I found this channel, always quality content. Fyi, trout do not protect their reds like a lot of other species. They let their eggs, fertilize em, and leave them on their own to survive. Which is why you don't usually see large schools of trout in every hole.
It's really a gem. Right now it's under fire management. Tried to visit 3 days ago and couldn't get closer than 15 miles from this stretch of water. Interesting how I was talking about fire in this video too!
I could name that stream, fished it myself a fair bit back in the 80s when I lived in the area. The bull trout population looks healthier now than it did back then.
Right on! Doing my best not to be too direct with these locations to keep fishing pressure low to moderate. It's so nice to go to an upper river like this and not see another angler. Yes, there's a bunch up high up there. This river is truly incredible. Love your comment say hi anytime R.
Beautiful country up there. I concentrate so much on salmon in the summer and steelhead fall/winter/spring I have never made it up to those areas. Maybe some day...
@@fishandflywithgus I have been targeting cutthroat on the big "S" river. No coho yet but we are seeing them all over. Might try to target them but I have a hard time leaving the cutthroat alone. They aren't big but it is so much fun to watch the takes and my nephew is having a blast chasing them. Hopefully we will find some rogue coho willing to come to the surface.
Thanks for mentioning what river drainage you a fishing. I appreciate not mentioning the specific spot to keep any pressure lower, it's just really helpful to have a basic idea of where someone is filming. Great to see so many big bull trout BTW! Like StickFigure too!
This is the Skagit drainage. There's tributaries on tributaries with fish like this. Interestingly some of these tributaries now allow retention of bull trout 20" and larger. Populations of bull trout on the Skagit seem to have returned and boy do they love that cold water higher up in the late summer and fall. Does this help? Thanks for keeping mindful about disclosure. These waters are very special to me and I intend to see them maintain the low pressure...
Started watching this cuz I wanted to find some spots for back country fishing and I hear my all time favorite band will definitely be watching more of your videos
I know a river in the North Cascades where some years in the fall I would find big bulls and the last time there were none, so I think they don't spawn every year?
That’s interesting. I’m pretty confident most the adults spawn every year. Maybe the timing changed from year to year with flows, temps and other variable conditions? Not sure how long BT sit on redds… thanks for your comment!
May I recommend a net? Reduces the amount of batter the fish inflict on themselves on rocks. Makes it easier to unhook, as you can apply slack and keep the fish
Absolutely. That's best case scenario. I lose them a lot. Trying to do better at making it a priority but this particular day no bueno. Thanks for being respectful in your tone.
Right on! Send me a note sometime and perhaps we can send a fly. My style is more remote/backcountry stream born trout, like these bulls and lots of west slope cutthroat fishing surrounding N Idaho, etc. This life is so fun when you've got days on days to explore and fish the best of the best. Hard to beat these areas for all around beauty and quality trout/salmon...
@@fishandflywithgusfor sure! Even out in NJ im kind of the same. I fish smaller and quieter areas for brookies and browns and stuff. We certainly dont have the geography of the PNW at all but for the appalachians, we have some beautiful pocket water and gorges and some nice fish. I ended up renegotiating out here (for now) but will still keep you on tab if I head out that way for a weekend and bring my gear :)
Rainbows and dollys are wild in this area of the Cascades and are both anadromus fish. The rainbows here are possibly baby steelhead altought most NC rivers have resident population that doesn't migrate to salt water.
Amazing video and amazing fish! I fished up that spot during late summer early spring of last year but I hadn't had anything larger than a 15". What's the streamer you've tied in the second portion of the video? Is that some sort of sex dungeon? Thank you again for keeping this spot secret 🙏🙏
Thank you! Incredible river in the late summer fall. Try again in September and see what happens. If you want a fishing buddy I'd be down to explore it with a friend possibly. Other sections lower are just as good I feel. Yes, dungeon variations. Those fish would eat just about anything!
You are correct. This is very special water high up. This is a S***** River tributary above the Sauk and below Diablo. The water quality and fish health is as beautiful as anything I've ever seen in Western Washington.
Pick yourself up a Garmin inReach for those off-grid adventures. They work really well for letting your friends and family know that you are safe. I have never had to push the “button” but I use it all the time to send messages and location information to my wife. They also offer 100k “rescue insurance” for only $40 a year which is bargain, considering a rescue hilo runs about 60k!
Definitely not casting to spawning fish. They're pre-spawn. They're spread out and I couldn't see reds if I tried with the murky off-color water. Thanks for watching.
Had two heavy nymphs so I was probably casting a bit different to keep those separate and untangled. Hitting the bulls eye so however it gets there gets there. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Brother! Means a lot. And yes, what an area to be enjoyed.

Absolutely Chuck! We're spoiled and most folks never take advantage of getting deep in the wild and seeing what's all there. Love it!
Ohhh man! Gorgeous scenery & fishing! Wow! If only the rain came a day or two before. Haha

My pleasure 😊
Nice bull trout!
Thanks Boss! 🐟
That is some beautiful water up there Joel!
isn't it though?! Pretty special (upper) Skagit River tributary... Thanks for your comment!
Marking the reds is pretty cool. I saw a post of someone criticizing your casting sheesh! any cast that produces a fish is perfect.
Appreciate that Sir!
Awesome video!! No extra bs like adds an stuff, just strait nature 💯🙌🏽
Absolutely!!
Awesome video 👍
Thank you Nutty! So glad you enjoyed it!
Well done Brother!!

Great shift in the channel. Keep it going! ❤
Nice breakdown in equipment (pawnshops are a goldmine for good gear) fly selections, and ecology/biology!
Thanks man!

Do these tribs get any salmon?
Yes! This particular river gets King, Coho, Pink and maybe others.

9# test on a fly rod? Not a tapered leader?
Tapered is always ideal if available. Sometimes you make your own tapered leaders too.
Is that the Cascade River? Curious which campground you used.
Could you message me on Facebook (Joel Gustafson) and we'll talk about the location. Or text @ 425-879-1807
what kind of canoe is max running???
A hollow one!!!

How do you find your trails? Do you use a certain app?
Honestly I'm looking at maps and Google maps and following blue lines. I know Trout Routes is a cool app but I'm not using it (yet).

Not casting to spawning fish is sacrilege to bass fishermen.
Definitely not casting to spawning fish. They're pre-spawn. They're spread out and I couldn't see reds if I tried with the murky off-color water. Thanks for watching.
Put your elbow in you side, it does not leave that position and use your wrist, your casting is cringe. But you seem to be doing fine catching fish.
