    Great video Isaac. Wondering what equipment you recommend bringing for May-June (eg. line weights, rod length). Also, was your guide primarily recommending euro-nymphing, or swithcing between nymphs, dries and streamers? Planning a trip this spring.

    • @isaacness
      @isaacness  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Joe, Thanks for the kind words! I would recommend bringing standard 9' 5 weights to fish here unless you are more experienced at Euro nymphing and have special Euro rods in which case I would bring those. Almost everyone over there euro nymphs because of the regulations on flies/tackle. Most fisheries in Slovenia only allow you to use a single barbless fly with no suspension indicators or split shot which means if you want to nymph you basically have to euro nymph. Having said that, there is definitely still plenty of opportunity to fish dries and streamers which were both effective strategies for us.

    Wow! Amazing video. This really speaks about timing for me. I was there in late July/ August of 2022 and fished a few rivers, including the Soća. Caught a few fish but man there were way to many people on and off the river. Local guides get pretty pissed when you don’t buy there “guide services” an only rent there gear.
    Regulations were a bit difficult to get a hold of and understand as an American.
    (Everything around hunting/fishing in Europe is difficult if you’re used to the American system)
    Overall this is a great video, it really shows the best of what Slovenia has to offer. Just don’t let a nice video like this trick you into thinking this is an “easy” thing to accomplish. 🤙

    • @isaacness
      @isaacness  Год назад

      Hey there! I brought a 590-4 sage response and a 790-4 sage pulse. Our guide also let us use one of his sage ESN rods for a lot of the french nymphing. I think that rod was a 3 weight. The rivers there have some strict regulations on the use of indicators, multiple flies, split shot, and barbed hooks so you need to look them up for each stream you fish and even which fishing club you are fishing in. If I were to go back I would probably plan on bringing a euro nymphing rod and a 9 foot 5 weight.

    Min 15:06 I too had parked the car where they parked it. I caused an accident with a truck that went into the oncoming lane and collided with a car. I could only receive a parking fine but I was still morally guilty.

      Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that! I wonder if it definitely was the same spot because where we parked there was a fairly large pull off. Large enough to ensure that we were safely parked out of the way. I hope that you had a good trip besides that incident.

      @@isaacness I live in Italy. I know the area well. It seems to me that that bridge is in the upper part of the Idrica. There were no problems with the trip but the fishing was not special. Those places were wonderful in the days of communist Yugoslavia. There was always the Police watching. Asphyxiating but it was enough to respect the rules to have fun. There were giant trout to fly in the evening in the summer.

      @@isaacness no unfortunately even though I lived in the Balkans for many years when I was young.

      Taimen look like and incredible species to target also! How was your experience targeting them?

    • @TropicalGardeningCyprus
      @TropicalGardeningCyprus Год назад

      @@isaacness the whole Amur-basin experience was something out of this world. I went for the river, not the taimen. So, there were multiple goals, gained step by step for a month. First goal was the Amur pike, done that, moved to their various catfish species, then mongolian redfin, mongolian asp, skygazer etc. etc. 24 species including local Amur trout and grayling species, and only then, 5 last days, taimen.
      I thought it would be difficult, mainly because of the way various travellers to Mongolia have portrait it, but it's not. It's not that rare in Russia. They have much healthier populations.
      I had my first 10pounder in the first hour. 5 days later I already had something like 15 on that range, one above 20 pounds. I had only one take from a really big one, one take and I lost it, so, next time my guide tells me I need bigger hooks, I'll trust him.
      One guy in our group, he had Huchen experience, so he had specific Slovakian and Serbian handmade lures for huchen, and he smashed the taimen on those, had 5 fish above 40 pounds each. So, yeah, when you get to Slovakia again, get those big jointed Slovakian-made lures for Huchen.
      When it comes to fly fishing, well, I have to be honest, my equipment wasn't strong enough for the task. I fly fished for grayling. Literally hundreds of them EVERYWHERE in the streams feeding Amur, but a lot smaller than European grayling, and also lenok trout. Lot's of lenok, you'll love them if you ever get there.

      That is a great question! Some really good studies have been done on this proving that catch and release is very safe for fish and usually results in a very low mortality rate. I can say that from my personal experience guiding in Colorado, because we fished the same waters all year, there were many fish with unique patterns or coloration that we would actually name and have clients catch several times a year and even in different years.
      I'm not against catch and keep fishing by any means either. I have often kept fish to eat and think its a great part of the sport.

    If you are so good fly fisherman and even are writing a book abou it, why you hire guide? Does he really worth that big money? Do you really need him?

    • @isaacness
      @isaacness  2 месяца назад

      Great questions! Let my try my best to answer. First, I think I’m decent at fly fishing, I would never claim to be the best fisherman out there so I’m always happy to have help. Second, hiring a guide saves me a ton of time trying to figure out which sections of river are available to anglers, what the regulations are on those waters, and what exactly the fish are doing/eating once I get there. Without a guide it may take me 2-3 days of fishing on my trip just to learn those things before I can really be productive catching. Fishing with a guide gives me the best possible chance at catching lots of fish and big fish in the limited time I am out. Third, usually when I hire a guide I am fishing with my wife who is pretty good at fishing but benefits greatly from one on one instruction. Hiring a guide means I don’t have to be the one giving that one on one instructions so I can fish the entire time myself! The last thing I will mention is that. I really only hire guides when I am in a different country, need the use of a boat, or am fishing for a new species that I have never targeted before. I would not hire a guide to fish for trout in the US where I am from. Hopefully that helps! I am a former guide myself so I know exactly what Im paying for and in the right circumstances I think it makes a lot of sense to tap into the local expertise that can only come with countless hours spent on one single fishery.

    Happy for you, that you found such beautiful rivers and trout, and can afford to travel halfway around the world to fish there. But...North America has hundreds of rivers more beautiful and dozens of trout species prettier. Just to make a point, jump to 1:27 (for a river) and 13:11 (for Dolly Varden trout). • @leighbaragwanath

    Looks like a fantastic place to fly fish, just had to stop watching you handling the trout, are you not aware that every time you hold a hold a fish you either do damage to it’s protective slime layer or even worse, if you raise a fish out of the water for your ego trophy photo, you damage the fishes organs. I can’t believe worldly travellers like yourselves don’t take more care of the fish you catch. It sickens me to think of the amount of fish that you catch & release are fish that will more than likely swim away and not survive to be caught again. I’m a keen fly fisherman myself living in Australia, so my agenda , if you will is to educate fisher all over to not raise the fish from the safety of the water, far less to handle them suspended in your hands. If you’re going to let them go, let them live. And enjoy your trips outdoors doing what we all enjoy doing.
