My Testimony | Fishers of Men
This is my testimony. In 2018 I got invited to an Easter church service in Steamboat Springs Colorado. Up to this point in my life I would have told you I "believed" in God, but the reality was I was I didn't mean it and I was living my life in whatever way I thought was best. As soon as I walked in the doors God was working in my heart. I was convicted by the fact that God had humbled Himself to come to earth, be born in a manger, live a sinless life of service, and sacrifice Himself on the cross in my place though I was so unbelievably undeserving. I felt the call to not only believe in Christ, but to put my faith in Him, trusting that His ways are better than my own. In that moment I w...

    With the Davidson River, unfortunately that last tropical storm that tore through there, a couple of years ago and dumped a ton of rain, caused a HUGE flash flood that tore up the river bank for a long way down river like nothing I've ever seen. The Hatchery section was really damaged and changed in a way that was not good. A good stretch of large Rhododendron overhanging the bank that the largest trout used to shelter under was all ripped out. Ever since, it seems like the depth of water through the Hatchery section is permanently lowered...also not good. A well know pool near the Hatchery definitely no longer holds the water depth it once did; used to never be able to see the bottom...now you can. I've been there a few times since that bad flooding and damage and that infamous pool doesn't seem to hold the large trout like it once did. The parking lot of the Wildlife center was flooded...I think the building too was badly flooded and been closed ever since, including the Restrooms there. The Hatchery did also flood and stocked fish escaped into the river. The Hatchery Center has been closed to the public for two years now at least and the Forest Service looks like they are in no hurry to repair it and re-open - our Tax dollars not at work. They tore up the pavement in the Parking lot and now is just gravel - a downgrade. I used to fish that area on the Davidson regularly...never did high numbers but always caught fish. Now no longer go there as much - sad.

    • @isaacness
      @isaacness Месяц назад

      This is some great added context and you're completely right. the river has changed a lot since that storm. I think it was Fred, does that sound right? I recently heard from an inside source that they are going to do a renovation on that hatchery in the next year or so hopefully allowing them to stock more and bigger fish in some nearby streams in the future.

    • @YTusercomment
      @YTusercomment Месяц назад

      @@isaacness - Yes, that Storm name sounds familiar. It REALLY changed the way a long stretch downstream, and a little upstream, from the Hatchery fishes...and not in a good way. I've been there 4 or 5 times since and the water through there is always lower than it normally was. Even far downstream, there is a 90 degree bend with a large pool I knew of and that pool water level is also commonly lower than it normally was. I sometimes would wade across the river just before the pool and water level was always waist high...now it's knee high. And the river banks along there was severely damaged...likely from both high, rapid water flow and floating debris pushed along. The river is subjected to flash flood conditions, depending on rainfall, but I never seen damage like that done on the Davidson. You are right about the refurbishment on that Hatchery...soon there is to be a major renovation I'm told...the Hatchery will be moved farther back away from the river, among other upgrades. The Trout stocking program has already put out the alert that Trout stocking quantity within the entire state of NC will be much reduced in 2025, and maybe also reduced some in 2026, until this renovation in completed.

    If you are so good fly fisherman and even are writing a book abou it, why you hire guide? Does he really worth that big money? Do you really need him?

    • @isaacness
      @isaacness 2 месяца назад

      Great questions! Let my try my best to answer. First, I think I’m decent at fly fishing, I would never claim to be the best fisherman out there so I’m always happy to have help. Second, hiring a guide saves me a ton of time trying to figure out which sections of river are available to anglers, what the regulations are on those waters, and what exactly the fish are doing/eating once I get there. Without a guide it may take me 2-3 days of fishing on my trip just to learn those things before I can really be productive catching. Fishing with a guide gives me the best possible chance at catching lots of fish and big fish in the limited time I am out. Third, usually when I hire a guide I am fishing with my wife who is pretty good at fishing but benefits greatly from one on one instruction. Hiring a guide means I don’t have to be the one giving that one on one instructions so I can fish the entire time myself! The last thing I will mention is that. I really only hire guides when I am in a different country, need the use of a boat, or am fishing for a new species that I have never targeted before. I would not hire a guide to fish for trout in the US where I am from. Hopefully that helps! I am a former guide myself so I know exactly what Im paying for and in the right circumstances I think it makes a lot of sense to tap into the local expertise that can only come with countless hours spent on one single fishery.

    About 20 years ago, I fished the Davidson for the first time, knowing nothing about it. At that point in my life, I had been flyfishing since age 10, or 50 years, I'm now 80 and still going. In the late afternoon, I couldn't make anything happen; the water was very low and the fish spooky. Returning in the AM, every run was occupied, so I moved upstream above the bridge to the last sizeable pool near the hatchery. There were three 20" plus rainbows ansd several smaller ones. I was still mystified as to how such small water could support so many large fish and walked over to the hatchery and asked a fellow on a tractor if they provided supplemental feeding, and was told absolutely not. Back at the pool, I threw everything in my vest, landing 4 small boys, but the big boys resisted. Suddenly, a female mallard came flying down the river and landed nearly at my feet. she began dipping and swallowing something. Then I understood everything. She was eating dead 2-3 inch fingerlings that came out of the pipe from the hatchery when they flushed the runs. Back to the car, dug through boxes and found the zonkers I used in winter on the Hiwassee in TN. Tied one on and first cast, got one of the big boys. Over the next hour I landed all 3 of them, largest about 25" - net was marked but she curled around in it. When asked how I figured it out, I simply say "a duck showed me."

    You should lubricate the knot with either saliva or urine.

    I really appreciate this. It can be hard to find quality fly fishing water in nc. And the tips and techniques you showed are extremely helpful as well!

    I've always had problems with this knot but your demonstration showed me where I was going wrong. My mistake all had to do with the way I was passing the tag ends through. Thanks for the help !

      I can't tell how many years I've been messing around with this knot! I don't use it very often, but it can come in real handy if you have a lengthy piece of leader break. I'd get it right some times, but most times not and for whatever reason, the way you demonstrated how to bring the tag end through totally resonated, thanks again.

      the problem I keep having is that after passing the two tag ends through, my knots are far apart and I can't figure how to fix the problem. thanks much

      Try leaving more tag end so that the ends don't pull through the space as you work the knots closer together! let me know if that helps
