My father taught me how to drop a fly in a tin can from 10 yards when I was 11. He taught me small brook skills in upstate NY fishing native brookies. I have a bamboo rod made in Utica NY almost 100 years ago. It is pristine. I have memories of lakes and streams and rivers and brooks and the many native fish I saw in them. After a time, fly fishing became so easy I pinched my barbs down. On a trip to the High Sierra for Goldens I cut my hooks off completely and just fished for the strike.....I never harmed another trout.
Your story reminds me of my dad - he didn't want to have too much advantage wether he was hunting or fishing because he felt it diminished the joy of the sport.
Look, I stumbled across this truly amazing little bit of footage an hour ago and just finished watching it for the third time. It is the finest visual I have ever seen on fly fishing. I am 72 and have fly fished since I was 10 in Scotland, England, Wales and widely in Australia, covering many species, fresh and salt. I did not understand one word the gentleman spoke, nor do I need to. In fact, I would actively avoid any translation, none needed. It was a privilege to have seen this. I will watch it many more times, I thank you.
That’s a masterpiece of a video! Beautiful scenery, camera work, and wise words to live by. Never tried fly fishing but this vid made me wanting to try! Thanks for the video!
I've always been curious about those trout in Japan. Trout are magical fish that live in the most beautiful places on earth. It's hard to describe the allure to fly fishing except to say the fish is hooked and released but the angler is hooked forever. It isn't just fishing. It's a way of life where you feel more in touch with God and creation.
"The true appeal of flyfishing lies in its inconvenience and difficulty". What a wonderful quote from this wonderrful man. And "If you want to be happy for an hour, drink alcohol, if you want to be happy forever, learn to fish." Truer words have not been spoken. What a beautiful short film. If youre ever in NY, Kakuhiro, would love to take you fly fishing for striped bass. Cheers.
I’ve been fly fishing since the mid 80’s. I’ll be sixty years old this coming year. You put into words how I have felt for many years traipsing up and down my small Colorado, and now Idaho, creeks and tributaries. After watching this video I now have wise words and a Chinese proverb to print and post by my desk at work. Thank you for sharing. This is a wonderful video.
Dears, I also become 60 next year (hopefully). I did experience the minimalistic joy of fly fishing in the alps and near my home in upper Franconia (Germany). But that is almost a decade ago. I was in Japan two weeks ago the first time in my life and I feel so connected through this video with your passion. It makes no difference if you are from Asia, America or Europe. It matters what we share
Just absolutely breath taking, a country I can’t wait to visit ( in about little over a month) and a place I’d love to retire in and live out the rest of my days. Bless Japan!!
5 am in Puerto Rico, drank a cup of coffee watching this, you sir are an accomplished fisherman and an artist, I can relate to many things you said in the video but your wisdom is at another level, thank you so much for sharing this, that ending, priceless, you have a new friend here.
Wonderful. At 66, I'm still too Gonzo to achieve Zen but I'm trying. Now my son is hooked and realizing how the mountains and trout draw you in. It is a true pleasure to fish with him and enjoy a Scotch from a hip flask while we watch and wonder.
That was beautiful. I’m becoming more and more appreciative of Japanese culture and your commitment to excellence in all things. Japanese people are true craftsmen and take so much pride in what they are doing, no matter how common or mundane the task at hand is. The world can learn a lesson from the Japanese
Thank you for liking this documentary film. I'm sure that many Japanese people will feel confident and proud after hearing your words. Thank you for your respect.
That was absolutely beautiful! I consider myself quite lucky to get to be guiding fly fishing in Japan, and it is meeting people like Nonaka san that make it so special here. Well done on this video 👏
What a beautifully filmed video 👌 it’s great to see others with the same passion to conserve their local rivers and indigenous wild trout . I fish little burns and lochs here in Scotland 🏴 so great to see your fishing in Japan . Your rods look fantastic 👍
We truly are, overwhelmed by information. It doesn't make us better, only busier. I chase trout, myself. I cherish every inch of water I've ever fished. Thank you for this video. It's given me a fresh perspective.
Been fly fishing for about 50 years, my father fished, and I have tied flies on my grandfathers fly tying vice. It’s a wonderful pastime, I have fished all over the U.K. and 7 times in Norway. I highly recommend it, always something to learn, it is peaceful and relaxing, and takes you to fabulous locations.
I like shime saba very much, also a good single malt. I live in Cornwall UK and have a small moorland stream in our garden which has small trout, and the heron starts flying in daily through the winter and cleans them out, but i always see the tiny little fry appearing in the slack water in early summer. 10 minutes down the road i can be on the main river, and cast a fly for a sea trout, or 20 minutes and be by the sea with a chance of a mackerel or sea bass. I love the wild nature of Japan, and appreciate the culture of artisan craftsmanship you have. Arigato and kanpai!
I love this so much. It’s really a blessing to see people appreciate aspects of American culture and history that aren’t mainstream but are truly beautiful. Much love on your journey and may the fish be intoxicatingly elusive.

Congratulation!! River Runs Through Japan is one of the best fly fishing video channel in the world! The true essence of fly fishing is represented here.
Thank you! It's cold in Japan right now and fishing is prohibited, so I can't film fishing, but if I get the chance, I'd like to make another fly fishing video.
I got my first fly rod when I was 12, (actually a japanese "No brand" glasfibre rod with steel ferrules), and have been "hooked" ever since. I'm now 66y old and newly retired so plenty of time to go fly fishing, mostly grayling but also trout now and then. I can so wholeheartedly relate to this movie as it captures the same feelings I have for fly fishing in small rivers. 15 years ago I also got the opportunity to acquire a cane rod made by Ulf Löfdahl, a renowned swedish cane rod maker, and have never looked back. It feels like you are coming closer to nature when using it compared to modern carbon fibre rods, it is that simple. Once again, thank you very much for this excellent movie. Greetings from Sweden.
Your story is very heartwarming. Being "hooked" with fishing is one of the important times in life when you can distance yourself from the troubles of everyday life. Thank you for resonating with this movie.

Beautiful video and life outlook. As I am also older and retired now, I have started to learn fly fishing in the mountain streams of Taiwan. I am also beginning to realise that enjoying the environment and the peaceful pursuit is more important than how many fish. Thank you
I always wondered if there was a fly fishing scene in Japan. I was a child when I lived in Tokyo from 1976-78. I would have loved to go fishing more while I was there. Now that I'm an adult, I want to go back and spend a few weeks fishing Honshu and Hokkaido islands. Thank you for this video, it was beautifully done and makes me wish I was there with my own bamboo fly rod.

How wonderful. As a native of the US mountain west who has enjoyed fly fishing for decades, your words and your experiences resonate with me. Whatever our national and cultural heritage, we are all moved by mountains, rivers, and the hope that a trout will rise.

Dude just wants a good place to fish, and some whiskey. We may be different on the outside but we have a lot in common. Rather inspiring for a dude who’s looking for a career change himself. Thank you for the glimpse into your life sir.
You and dude will have a mutual understanding.
