    Just want to clarify something as I'm seeing a whooooole lot of comments about it.
    The "extra trigger" i refer to in the video is clearly intended to be a safety or fire selector. I called it that because it's using the same model as the weapon's actual trigger. Was just pointing out the weird copy & paste design choice.
    Another thing, I don't entirely hate the vanilla design, I think it has some redeeming qualities and a lot of character. That being said there are a lot of you out there who do hate the thing, so I wanted to try designing it myself. Sorry if that didn't come across correctly in the video

      Looks like fire selector, is in the place of safety. Oh and the assault rifle was designed with power armor in mind. The designers just wanted to make it look good, not practical.

      The model is great I downloaded a day ago and I like using it it's the same as the vanilla assault rifle but it just feels like how fallout 3 and New Vegas use the same engine but fnv just feels better

    The Base game "Assault Rilfe" was one of the 1st weapons they made and it was designed to fit nicely into power armor hands. I think thats said inside one of the art books for the game..I could be wrong hence the huge foregrip

      Yes but it was supposed to be a MACHINE GUN for power armor. Not an assault rifle for everyone to use.

      Which I never understood because We've seen People in power armor use Weapons with trigger guards. I wish at least in fallout 4 there was a "Gloveless" Option for power armor without the Steel Frame Hands or removing the trigger guards from the Guns themselves, Which either Change would allow you to use certain Smaller weapons while In power armor

    I'm actually thrilled that there is a "just the remesh" option. Means I can pull that remesh into Frost or Horizon and not worry about patching it. It won't conflict with any of the weapon changes made by either of those overhauls

    This one fits into the game a lot, there are no useless add-ons, every part in the gun has a purpose and it even looks sexy as well, looks like something that should have been into the game a long time ago.

      Aye it was meant to be something of a powered armor rifle in concept, but then beth thought it would need to be usable out of the armor and so went the lmg route only to have the chinese ar dropped late in development and so we got this mess trying to be three things.

      I don't get that logic, all guns scale up when in powerarmor, if they wanted weapons pacifically for power armor, then design power armor only weapons. The gatling laser and mini gun, already look ridiculous out of power armor.

      @@stevenstocker9873 Ah don't get me started on the minigun. One thing that bothers me first off is the fact that we don't get the ammo pack to wear on our back like in Fallout 3 and NV, plus there's no belt to connect from the minigun itself. I always thought it was stupid how they made it in Fallout 4. I heard the reason we never get a belt connected to the "backpack" is because it's difficult to animate, which sucks.

      @@cpthornman Thing is, call of duty is ass. So nothing wrong (especially since COD devs have allowed permissions anyway) in taking the best parts of COD to fallout 4 for people that want them. People are free to not use COD related mods anyway.

      @Dub Jubs I hate that gun in tarkov so much, I thought it was gonna be a bolt action for 338, but the devs said fuk the economy and balance XD cool gun but too over the top

    This new version looks and feels more powerful in general. There's an art to designing weapons to look as they function and function as they look in games, and I think you nailed it.
    It now looks like a proper heavy instrument made to sling large calibers through armor and mulch raiders.

    You did a really good job on this. I always did like the original “assault rifle” as the machine gun it was intended to be. Always did have a soft spot for the big water cooled machine guns, but your machine gun is just stunning.
    This is an amazing approach to making a different sort of machine gun with a retro-futuristic 50s-60s inspired look. Reminds me of a Fallout-style redesign of the Stoner 63. It fixes the weirdness of having a giant water cooled “assault rifle” everywhere while adding a very good looking GPMG which the base game sorely lacks. If I had the knowledge to get it to work alongside the base assault rifle it’d be in my load order instantly and it’d definitely stay there.
    Notes about the original “assault rifle” model: The charging handle is actually somewhat sensible. It’s basically the sort of charging handle you’d see on a Maxim gun. I think the “extra trigger” is meant to be a fire selector switch, albeit a weirdly placed and odd looking one. The rear sight seems like an attempt at a rear sight like you’d see on something like an M60, but it’s a bit weird looking with the stylized AA sight up front.

      I was done with the design in vanilla too but the assault rifle and it being chambered in 556 is what bothered me, this does have a better looking mesh so if I go back to fo4 I'm definitely installing this

      This guns coolet is mostly based on Lewis lmg so air cooled barrel

      I have a feeling besides just rechambering it for 5.56 in the game files they did make some tweaks to it to make it make a little bit more sense in the hands of a normal person even though you could still see it was designed for Power Armor and power armor only.

      Yea this mod is really cool, I actually like the design of the base game assault rifle though simply bc it's so unique and retro and fits the 1950s style culture in the future setting, having this modded variant added in alongside it as opposed to replacing it would be amazing

      Whatever drugs they were on were definitely not the kind that make you creative either! If you look at it closer, a good portion of the parts of the gun are just sloppily clipped into each other, including the drum mag. So unimmersive. This mod actually makes the vanilla "Assault Rifle" usable. Now it just needs some better auto firing sounds.

      Doesn’t surprise me it’s unfinished, I always found it bizarre that a ~20 lb machine gun had such a lightning fast reload animation compared to the rest of game’s arsenal.

      @@peppermillers8361 Yup. It doesn't have a bolt release, at least not one clearly visible, so it can't be explained by "pushing a button". So it's needed to use a charging handle, and since they don't use the charging handle, the gun simply never chambers a round

    I dig the concept of this mod, I love the look of a water-cooled barrel but it looked so overly bulky for a personal machine gun. The only time it looked size appropriate was if you were wearing power armor. I like the idea of a water-cooled barrel on a heavy weapon better, carried like the Minigun or Gatling Laser, even like the Shoulder Mounted Machine Gun from NV. At least that way it's bulkiness is an attribute rather than a detriment.
    On the subject of bulkiness I wish that the laser pistol and plasma pistol were separated from laser rifle and plasma rifle categories. I think that the rifle versions look fine for the most part but the pistol versions look cartoonishly huge.

      To be fair, that was the concept for the Assault Rifle, a weapon to be used by power armoured soldiers.
      Heck, if memory serves, the suppressor has text on it specifying it's made for 50 BMG, those rounds that have no standard gun chambered for it.
      Somewhere along the line the developers decided to downgrade the ammo for the Assault Rifle and Combat Rifle (.45 isn't bottlenecked, Combat Rifle ejects bottlenecked casings), which makes the Combat Rifle the best gun in the entire game, because .45 is plentiful yet it's a gun that holds up in lategame.

      the Laser Pistol and Plasma Pistoll being their own thing with Energy cells for lasers and Plasma cells for Plasma and under the effects of pistol related perks would be cool and more importantly add more options in the arsenal. same for say American and Chinese Assault Rifles, SMGs, Bolt rifles, pistols and shotguns(pump actions, and you can have lever actions for the americans). which would be great.

    You can add compensators to the end of suppressors. Normally done with large bore suppressors for them big magnum and looooong range shooting. Usually won't see flashhiders as the suppressor will conceal flash, well enough on its own.

    The “second trigger” was actually the safety. So that part actually make sense. However, the rest of the gun is garbage

      And that safety looks like an RK62/95/ AK selector for single, burst and continuous fire that has been welded on onto the last option and is in the wrong place.

    Wow I love this concept. The big thing that bugged me about Fallout 4 was the cartoonish dimensions and style of the a lot of the weapons. This fixes the AR while still matching the arts style. The same needs to be done for the 10mm and the Combat Rifle.

    It was originally supposed to be an LMG similar to the minigun, with a slower ROF but higher dmg per shot. I think there actually is a partial rendering of the R91, the real assault rifle, in the games code.

My main assumption, and idea of why they did it, was because 4 was more of a FPS than a RPG and they wanted guns to be flashier

    I love the look you went for, you're remesh made me actually want to use the weapon.
    Hope you come up with some more ideas for remedying and replacing the other weapons to!
    Maybe you could take the 10mm pistol and make it look like a retro futuristic looking M1911 or Browning Hi Power?

    I actually really appreciate that you wanted to make a design that still appealed to the game's aesthetic. So many weapon mods just throw in modern weapons without taking into account the artstyle or lore of the game, so seeing a design that does both is such a treat.
    Next time I play Fallout 4, this will def be one of the mods in my list.

    I’d say the design could use some more smaller details like some bolts, perhaps have the same lined grips as the combat weapons, it could also really use some wear and tear, some dirt build up so that it feels close to the other weapons in game.

    The design philosophy and little touches that went into this one might just make it my favorite. It keeps the soul of the gun without hurting my soul every time I see it. The massive grip staying, and arguably being a stronger focal point, kind of brings to mind the idea that it's there to accommodate being wielded BY someone in power armor.

      @@cosseybomb yes you can. why not? this is a game set on Earth, it's not much to expect it to follow the same physics as earth. its just very weird that the gun has air-cooling fins AND a water-cooling reservoir, and it makes the gun look ugly and bulky.

    Man this is pretty cool you should try this for other fallout 4 guns… although if you do that you do start to get into fixing weird things like the 10mm pistol and SMG being different originally or compatibility with other mods like the weapon overhauls pack

    This gun remake you done it's stunning and fits seamlessly into the game; with Assault Rifle reanimated it is just straight up amasing. The vanilla game really needed a heavy calibre automatic option. My only suggestion would be to defo give this weapon its own aim model (as new record) and adjust the recoil values to better fit that its a machine gun. I found a min recoil of 1 and maximum of 2 is pretty good, makes it feel a lot beefier especially for full auto. All other values I kept the same as default assault rifle. Just a really small thing but worth mentioning for maximum immersiveness I thought.

    I like the full replacer version because I never have enough 5.56 rounds to actually use the assault rifle and it would be better in .308 but the dealbreaker is the name of the weapon. I’d rather it just be named “Machine Gun” or “.308 Machine Gun” to keep it simple and also to fit the naming conventions with the vanilla weapons. Other than that small gripe amazing work dude.

      Changing the name of the weapon is probably the easiest edit. Open it in the construction kit, or maybe even fo4edit if it has that feature, and type in your preferred name in the appropriate field. Done.

    Glad to see a model replacement that doesn't look like a 2077 hyper future gun. Everything in Fallout is supposed to look 50s, a little bipod and a proper barrel is all you need to fix this gun

And, guilty pleasure, I actually... really like the big foregrip - especially for a weapon that'd likely most commonly be carried into battle by power armored troops.     To me it looks more like a machine gun you’d find in fallout 1 I think you nailed the design and if you would of secretly installed this in my game I don’t think I would of noticed at all.

    The main reason the assault rifle doesn't really work is that it doesn't fit the 1950s aesthetic. It's based off of the wwi era Lewis gun but with a bizarre water cooling system.

    It looks great! I like Nimrouts new Assault Rifle remesh, particularly because the .50 cal sounds amazing and the mag is immersively huge to go along with it. I think this one looks much cleaner though, especially since Nimrout's muzzles and Suppressor have mesh missing on the backside. This remesh combined with the sound of Nimrout's and a .308 chambering would be perfect.

    I love the compromise! And I look forward to trying the mod in my next playthrough.
    I do have some balance questions though... The .308 rechamber, which I support, but ... does it do more damage? It's a much rarer and more expensive ammo type, now used in a rifle with a high fire rate. And, you know, it's also bigger. I just ask because Beth screwed up balancing the ass. rifle as it was. The semi-auto ass. rifle in vanilla was actually less damage than the combat rifle, and the fire rate doesn't exactly make up for it. (Though at least in full auto the recoil compensation and reload speed did make it a better choice in vanilla.) So in "sniper" builds ... I'd just flat out ignore the ass. rifle. (Especially with the easy of access to the Overseer's Guardian, which, again, was a bad choice on Beth's part, that you could just buy it.) So with the .308 ammo now in use with your mod, if it wasn't done, just as a suggestion, a bit of a balancing damage buff would be great to see in my opinion. As would a 5.56 "downgrade" receiver that ups the rate of fire and maybe tames the recoil even more, if it isn't there already. Just spitballing suggestions. As Beth balanced the ass. rifle about as badly as they drew it and it's supposed to be the ultimate late-game weapon. Allegedly. LOL
    But I really love the idea to fix it instead of replace it, and think you made some great aesthetic choices within the compromise of keeping it so close to vanilla. Yeah, I know, we could just add more rifles with mods ... but I like honoring the vanilla as much as is reasonable. Beth may have made mistakes. Many, many, mistakes. Oh so many mistakes. But darn it if they didn't find their (very ugly) aesthetic and stick to it. LOL Making it somehow feel wrong to tacti-cool Fallout 4 up with, you know, real usable choices. LOL Fallout 4 may wear a dunce cap, but to completely fix it ... it's just not the same game anymore. So mods like yours, awesome choice IMHO! Keep the baby, but toss out the nasty bathwater.
    Also, gotta say, I especially love the little touch of the fire selector. It's not only accurate, but also a great FU at Beth. LOL Why is a fire mode selector NOT a standard part of the vanilla game? ROFL Oh, right, because bullets themselves are no longer FMJ or AP or hollow point or explosive or whatever. Now it's the *receiver* that is. Pffffft! Sane choice, Beth. Great attention to detail. So adding in the visual of simply flipping the switch, hilariously poignant. Now if only we had a safety... Or, heck, proper burst fire outside of VATS. Oh well. Maybe we'll return to reality in whatever Microsoft-forced Fallout sequel that Beth fights against. LOL

    I might be one of the few rare ones that likes the look and feel of the F4 Assault rifle.

    I love this redesign. Personally I see the "Assault Rifle" mostly fitting in the role of something like a BAR or FG42, serving mainly as a light automatic rifle or early attempt at a battle rifle. While I don't hate the jacketed cooling fines (they're very reminiscent of the Lewis LMG, they just don't seen quite right on something that is fundamentally a magazine side-feed platform.
    Maybe a future variant of your model could take some more inspiration from the MG34 or MG42 and feature a folded bipod fitting alongside the wooden handguard. I think that would flesh out the design and firmly establish that this is more of an automatic rifle than it is a true assault rifle or machine gun.

    Fun fact:
    The assault rifle was the first weapon to be made in fallout 4, and was made to be a "power armor rifle" it was made to fit and look good in power armor. And when they ran out of time for the normal assault rifle, they just renamed the machine gun.

    This is awesome! Glad someone made a mod that doesn't outright replace the assault rifle with a tacky modern assault rifle. I admit there are some features on the OG AR that I liked and it's good to see you alongside other people can see it's positive traits. I really like the little details added to it, it's not like everyone is going to notice them, but it's welcome regardless. The wood furniture is really nice looking too, and fits within fallout's retro-futuristic aesthetic, like the Pancor Jackhammer in Fallout 2.

    Neat look.
    Lorewise, the FO4 Vanilla "Assault" Rifle was IIRC to be the M199 Backtalker that was talked about in previous FO4 titles. The point of this design was to fit on the large hands of the new version of the power-armor, so it looks bulky and unwieldy. You could add back a cooled barrel, that like the Pipe-Gun's finned barrel, that won't increase the weapon bloom when firing.

    My thoughts on the large foregrip is that this makes sense for Power Armor users,...I wouldn't have had a problem if Bethesda had made one or two weapons like the AR and the Minigun say, useable only in PA (and by Super Mutants), and made the vanilla 10mm like that, with a smaller more real world version for 'human' sized hand use,...and that would have helped explain the odd dimensions of several weapons.

    If you would raise the automatic damage to around 30 or something then it would work. Combat rifles basic automatic receiver has damage of around 20-22 with .45. Single shot damage is good though and it looks great.

    I love it! You fixed all of the base weapon's problems while keeping the good stuff (though I do wish it was still water-cooled, oh well), and I'm sure it still looks really good in the hands of Power Armor like the original was designed to do. You absolutely nailed the machine gun feel. I think I'll go with the custom option, I'll keep everything the same balance-wise and rename it to the Machine Gun. Again, I love it, great work!

    I absolutely love the direction you took for F4's MG, and it definetly gives me some inspiration to utilize my own 3D modelling knowledge to make a F4 weapon mod my own.
    One thing I did wonder about the choice of ammo and its reason being to be more suitable against power armor:
    Why develop a weapon with a caliber against PA, if the only type of people that wear PA are the Americans? Why develop a gun that has more expensive (thus more scarce) ammo with an objective in mind to destroy heavily armored enemies?
    Other than maybe armored vehicles, I don't know about any Chinese clad-in-iron/steel enemies. Just seems to be convenient for the post-apocalypse scene, rather than useful for let's say... a military campaign against the Chinese in Anchorage.
    EDIT: No, I do not hold any decanonizing lore of 76 and even most of 4 true to my heart, but if anyone is willing to pull that F76 Chinese PA skin card, that's fine by me.

    Nice work on the re-mesh. It looks great. It looks a hell of a lot better than the original. I really appreciate the level of detail you put into this project.
    one thing, this is just a technical thing concerning the classification of the weapon. When its chambered in 5.56 its a Light Machinegun , and when its chambered in .308 its a medium machinegun.

    from what I remember in the art of falout 4 book it stated the lore it was intended to be used for power armor users (also confirms this was supposed to be and MG) which explains the size and design choice in some capacity cause and I guess the magzobes design is supposed to be easier for power armor users with the armors bigger hand to reload the gun, this just a theory so I coudl be wrong. basically a bigger "traditional" rifle for bigger men and nore weapons that aren't only just things like miniguns.

    Needs a propper flash hider though to fit the look. Most real world cold war era machineguns had some sort of muzzle device on them. Or at very least varying thickness profile between the muzzle end and the hand guard, rather than just a straight cylindrical barrel.

    I do like this a lot, but part of me still wants to see a mod that makes Fallout 4's "Assault Rifle" look like a more convincing water-cooled machine gun that has been adapted for use with Power Armor. Also, based on the "hose" that is going into it, I think the large foregrip of the original Fallout 4 "Assault Rifle" is meant to double as a canister that holds additional water for better cooling, like the large water cases that are generally attached to real world water-cooled machine guns.

      I can’t be the only one who thinks the original looks like an MG 08/15. The MG 08/15 was a WW1 German “light machine gun” made by lightening a tripod mounted heavy machine gun. It’d be perfect for power armor. Article and pic from Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_08#MG_08/15 .

      @@kayleescruggs6888 I've actually seen someone else suggest that before, though when it comes down to it, we won't be able to know for sure how much it inspired the Fallout 4 "assault rifle" design. There's a decent chance that Bethesda took many different firearm designs and just "threw 'em all together" for it.

      It's not a select fire switch. The gun already has one of those, right above the duplicated trigger mesh. (Which incidentally offers further proof that the designers had no earthly idea what they were doing, because if it has a select fire switch then that means it was MODELLED as an assault rifle, yet it has two different machine gun barrel cooling devices, and was chambered for .50 cal, and is referred to as a machine gun in the game files...)

    That is a nice looking weapon. Clean, lore friendly too. The reason BTW the weapon lists .50 caliber is that as InFamoo noted the Assault Rifle was supposed to be a weapon for power armor users and chambered in .50 .

    I liked the original idea for the “assault rifle.” It was apparently the first gun they modeled and realized in order to fit into the bigger hands of their new power armored soldiers. In that way, the AR makes sense in its bulk and machine-gunness. That being said, water cooled machine guns should not be a thing in 2077

    I was doing some digging and realized that the assault rifle looks very similar to the Johnson M1941 rifle and lmg from WWII, which uses side loading mags and a big ugly shroud as well. Sadly have not seen any mods yet. Also you may remember the M1941 from COD WWII, it was a beast.

    I remember on my first ever playthrough of fallout 4 all those years ago, i found an assault rifle but it had the explosive rounds effect tacked on to it. I cant remember if it was a legendary weapon or not but i found it very early in the game, maybe level 9 and it was my staple weapon for the entire playthrough.

    In the artbook for Fallout 4, the Assault Rifle was originally named Light Machine gun. Also, this gun bears a resemblance to the Lewis gun.

    I never disliked the Assault Rifle, but the thing that bugs me the most about it is that it's chambered in 5.56. A weapon of this size, which looks like it was designed to be carried by power armor wearing soldiers, just screams to be 308 or 30.06, not an intermediate cartridge.

    Well, any select-fire rifle with an intermediate cartridge is technically an assault rifle. So Bethesda wasn't wrong to label it that way...

      Except that it was clearly designed to originally be a .50 calibre machine gun, which is why ".50 cal" is written on its suppressor. Also assault rifles generally don't have 15kg water cooling systems, because they don't need to fire hundreds of rounds one after another in full auto.

    I believe the "extra trigger" as you put it, in 0:27, is the fire selector. Meaning flicking up/down changes from semi to auto.

      Fire selector is right above it, the literally took the same trigger model and slapped it there. I think it might be a safety, but it looks ridiculous

    Your machine gun design looks awesome and ironically with how turned out, it looks like a very cursed BAR which was the US use machine gun from WW11
