    I put Coach Mandy’s explanation of how to “kick from the hips” to work at swim practice this morning. What a game changer! The videos and the responses to viewer questions lead me to a much greater understanding of the meaning of the word “kick” in the context of swimming and what it means to kick “from the hips.” I was also able to understand the role that the feet and the ankles play in creating propulsion. My swimming world got a lot brighter today! Thanks Coach!

    I have just started 'trying' to use the kickboard and essentially hardly moving, ... and this is in spite of being a swimmer, but not trained, for many a year. I also do a fair amount of cycling and other physical activity.
    Trying to focus on improving my kicking technique, and I know I will get there :-). My freestyle will improve tremendously one I get over this hurdle :-) Patience is virtue.

In a separate video coah Mandy explained how to engage the abs (pull in belly botton and move in the pelvis like getting into jeans) that was a game changer in getting my streamline very flat. For those of you striggling - practice with Zoomer fins it will help a lot.

    Thanks for the tips, Mandy! I just realized that lot of swimming advises refer to "kick from your hips" without clear details about how to achieve and perform that. I agree with grustnoe. I have yet to find a clear explanation of "kick from the hips." When I ask at the local pool, I can not even get a single answer on what is considered to be the hip.

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  2 года назад +13

      @grustnoe great question and welcome to the SWIMVICE channel! In reference to your question, yes, I am referring strictly to your hip. The frontal area where your hip flexors are located. The key to remain extended in freestyle avoid as much flexion as possible to keep your body streamlined (decreasing drag). If you drive your knee down, your hips sink, and you increase your resistance dramatically. This also makes you out of breath very quickly. The goal is to keep your legs extended driving your hip and top of your foot down while your knees feel straight.
      The above video are quick tips for using a kick board. However, I go into much more detail on this subject in older videos that will help clarify on this point. Check them out below:

      Yes, I see your a cyclist and it’s very common to translate the same movement in the water with a bicycle kick. If you hook your foot and drive your knees down and up, you will move backwards. The key is the extend your legs fully kicking from your hip flexor and top of your foot down (pointed). ✅ Also, keep your ankles and knees as relaxed as possible. I took swimming class for my 10th grade of high school, but we just had our 1st day today because the pool was being rebuilt
    i don't have any swim experience at a really so I can't swim, today we went in the pool for the 1st time and hanged on to the side and stuff-easy
    but we used a kickboard which I thought would be easy because idk how to float yet and it would keep me up
    I was literally dying before I got to one side, and idk I want to learn how to swim but thank you for the vid, my legs were so tired and I had to go to one side of the pool and back, and I could barely, my friends who already know how to swim had to literally help me once I got closer to the start again and yea but I hope I can learn fast
    i just panic when I can't breathe, because to float you need to hold ur breath but what about when you need to breathe and go down idk, but yea thanks for the video, if we do the kickboard tomorrow I'll do better I hope

    Quit using a kick board years ago, mostly because so many I see using one go into bad body position or posture, head too high, feet too low. Switched to a snorkel and basic stream line position. Much better. Cramping is not uncommon. Part of it can be because you are using the muscles more than normal and they are not conditioned. If you are dehydrated, that can contribute to cramping. My toes go first, then calves, and then ham strings. I always have electrolytes on hand. If you go pigeon toed, that can add 15 or so degrees of extra 'dorsi'plantar' flexion, so you have a better foot angle, plus you can use the whole side of your foot instead of just your toes. Another thing you can do, use 'superman' position when doing flutter kick laps with a snorkel, rather than stream line. Then, using this to practice rolling from side to side as you kick, 2, 4, and 6 beat kick patterns. You can also extend one arm out in front as you roll, which would be the recover arm. This helps get the idea of rolling from side to side. With the snorkel in front, it also lets you know if you are moving your head too much.

  • @33Jenesis
    @33Jenesis Год назад

    How do you keep your head above water and able to move forward? I kick from the hips and don’t bend knees. As soon as my head is above water, I move nowhere or moving forward very slowly. I have been doing it with my head in water (streamline body) using snorkel. Is this as effective to warm up and strengthen as keeping the head above water?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  Год назад

      Yes, thanks for asking such an important question. In terms of keeping your head above water and moving forward, one key aspect is body positioning. Maintaining good body alignment and balance in the water is crucial for efficient movement. This is something that takes practice and focus, and is a key component of our SWIMVICE kickstart program which covers a series of drill progressions to help improve your full body alignment. Additionally, it's important to focus on your kick technique, making sure that you are kicking fluidly from the hips/glutes and not stiff or bending your knees.
      As for using a snorkel, it can be an effective tool for while using the kick board. However, it's important to note that training with a snorkel should not be the only way you practice and improve your swimming technique. It's always best to also spend time training with your head above the water to build your overall swimming skills It is not required to have your head out of water when using a kick board but it's important to have a balance of both and use the methods that work best for you. Remember that this video covers helpful ways to swim with your head up but it is not necessary. 🙌🙏 Best, Coach Mandy

      Yes, this is what I referred to in the video as a “hook foot” to go backwards. If you point your feet you just stay in place or move very slowly forward. 👍🏼 -CM

      @@SWIMVICE I was not only hooking my foot. I also managed to form a second hook with my toes. Even when I pointed my foot to the rear, my toes still formed a hook of their own. I was able to kick myself backwards at a good clip.

    OK advice as far as it goes. You need to add that the feet/ankles have to be flexible not stiff with the rest of the leg, otherwise you are just pushing water up and down not backwards. Think about how flippers work. They push water backwards by flexing.

      Thank you for reaching out! I understand how challenging learning to swim can be, especially at 56 years old. The key to moving efficiently in the water is a combination of full body alignment and kicking from your hips, not your knees. These techniques are covered in depth in our SWIMVICE Freestyle Program. I highly recommend checking out our program to help you reach your swimming goals. Click the link here: linktr.ee/swimvice to learn more! 🙌😎🏊🏻‍♂️-Coach Mandy

    I randomly get cramps underneath my foot (freestyle and back stroke). Maybe I point my feet to much? Or is another explanation possible?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  2 года назад

      Great question! Yes, you most likely are keeping your feet fixed in this position. When your feet and ankles are tight, it is only a matter of time you can experience a cramp. Your feet act as a fin so they move in towards a pointed position but they are fluid not tight. Hope this helps clarify! -Coach Mandy 🙌🏼✅

  • @scribe3

    Coach Mandy, you mentioned you should always keep your legs straight, during this exercise. I know water is 800 hundred times more dense than air. Are you saying the water will bend you knees for you

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  2 года назад +2

      Hi Ray - Yes, the action feels straight but there is a soft bend of the knee. It is not an active mover. If you bend your knees actively, you will lose traction in the water which is why your hips will sink and it will slow your movement down. Hope this helps clarify! ✅

      Lol it’s ok! It happens to many others. If you hook your feet and bend your knee too much, you’ll move backwards. The key is to extend your legs fully! No flexion 🙌🏼

      You have the relax the entire leg and kick from the hip. If you are holding tension in your ankles and kicking from the knee, this can cause a cramp if you are tight the entire time. The legs move smoothly and relaxed. The more relaxed you are, the easier it is to move forward. ✅🙌🏼

Is there a good stretch for swimmers ankles that I could try? Been working on getting more relaxed swimming but it's easier said than done.
