Thank you so much for this video! I am a 48 year old woman finally taking swimming lessons and learning correct swimming technique. I am a dancer, but have been struggling with medial tibial stress syndrome for a few years so I have been trying to find ways to cross train and stay in shape without killing my shins. I'm actually doing well as far as kicking goes (I've got the foot pointing down pretty good as a dancer and kicking from hips), but my biggest struggle is breathing and getting head in the water. I am slowly overcoming that fear, but it is still a bit overwhelming. I really liked the exercise where she has her head in the water and then moves it to the side to breath. I never thought of trying this exercise with a kickboard! I tend to lift my head a lot when I move it to the side and do not exhale enough in the water so I am hoping this will help. I signed up for my first time using the pool lanes tomorrow on my own without an instructor and I am so nervous! I plan to use the kickboard most of the time with a few front crawl attempts once I feel more relaxed. It's wonderful to have these videos to use as a tool!
This is exactly how I was taught to do freestyle with the board by my instructor too and it has been so successful for me., I wouldn't have learnt it any other way! I'm glad this video exists as an excellent reference for any new swimmers❤️
Hi from New Zealand..most helpful video..I use coconut water for my electrolytes and I also have a 15Ltr 9.5 Kagen water should do me some good. For Adult beginners..a hand out would help from the office or coach how to prepare ourselves for coaching/training 1/2 hour sessions, with drills there is so much to fit in. Cramps would start during the training so I realised I need to drink lots of water etc..the 2nd term I sprained my butt during a freestyle lap..I use physio and acupuncture now. All is good now.. The kick board skills will be helpful.
Great tips in this. I’m a weak swimmer and very overweight and unfit. I have started swimming today. Using kickboard and doing the bit without arm strokes. Good tips in this. Thanks. Already learned something new and helpful
Great explanation on how to use the kick board properly. Love the progressive drills too, I'll have to give them a go as my swim fitness / endurance is lacking and I tire easily doing front crawl as my technique isn't great
Thank you so much for this Coach Robb! I'm always having problems whenever I use the kickboard (like for example, I don't move forward & I get tired pretty easily) so I'm going to try this later!
Pauleen - thank you for watching and the kind words. To improve your ability to move forward, make sure that your toes are pointing towards the end of the pool. Many times our ankles are not flexible which keeps our ankles at a 90 degree angle at the ankle which is essentially an anchor. Please keep me posted on you progress.
Coach Robb Beams Hello Coach Robb! I tried your tip, pushing down the kickboard and I can say that it did help me get a little faster but I still couldn't keep up with the others so I'll take note of this! Thank you again!
When you say that you are not keeping pace, make sure that you are kicking from your hips to use more of your thigh surface area verses your lower legs.
I am former US Navy. In order to pass Boot Camp, everyone must be able to stay afloat for 5-6 minutes. I was NEVER able to float, so they had to try and teach me to swim. It was then the instructors (Navy Seals) discovered I have negative buoyancy. No matter what I do, how relaxed I am, back or front, I will sink to the bottom. I have never given up on swimming and took more lesson after the military. Nothing is helping. The lessons you are giving here are the next steps I'm going to try. You can google "Negative Buoyancy", you will see I'm no the only one that suffers from this.
Thank you for watching and commenting! You don't need a kickboard to float on your back, you simply need to watch my Pencil drill video and apply on your back. Let me know if you run into any issues!
Hi, I've just started practising this drill recently, and I didn't know whether my hips should rotate slightly - I know now. Thanks for the video lesson.
@@Freptboy I am not sure what you mean about turning your head. Can you explain in detail. Tell your coach, "look - I am trying. You get your ass in the water and show me how to do it!". Just kidding.
hi coach Robb, i have a question here: why my body did not move forward when i was flutter kicking underwater? btw, great tips and good explanation for a swimmer at beginner level like me. keep on sharing all the tips!
Farah-thank you for your question! It sounds like your ankles are not flexible enough to point your feet directly backwards creating that "fin" necessary for forward movement. Please point your feet away from you and try again and let me know about your progress. -Coach Robb
Hi coach, I have started swimming 13 days back n know floating n kicking well now but i whenever i use kick board my lower body sinks a bit and kicks are just under water not on surface! I tried kick board 2/3 times but everytime i tries my lower body sinks n my back aches n stiff a bit! I tried relaxing but still not happening! When i do without board just m more comfortable! Somehow i got your advice from this video n came to know few mistakes of mine! Still want to know that is it necessary to learn breathing with kick board! Yes your advice will b great help!
Thank you for your message! As you using the kickboard, visualize pushing your belly button "up" while you are laying flat in the water and kicking. This will help eliminate that low back bend and associated pain. To help you keep your feet under the water, point your toes like a ballet dancer and keep your knees locked. Please keep me posted on your progress.
Coach Robb Beams thanks a lot coach! Will definitely try this & 1 more thing I want to ask that is it necessary to learn swimming with kick board? As when i do without board then i am more comfortable and fast n easy while swimming n breathing!
@@sushmasingh8482 Absolutely not necessary. Kickboards are primarily used to strengthen the kick component of a swimmers speed and power, but is not necessary at the fundamental level. Please keep me posted.
Coach Robb Beams thanks a lot Coach! Its such a relief with your answer! Otherwise i am good afternoon kicking but tried your advice they way of using kick board & i must say its the perfect way to use, i am really thankful for your advice n support! Thanks again coach
Thank you for watching and commenting! Ideally you want your head in the same position as you are when you are swimming - head down and the water line at your eye brow level. @@CoachRobbBeams So coach it means she did with her head up in the beginning because first we have to learn how to maintain our body horizontal.. right coach??
@@mohammadjr.4546 She illustrated how most people use the kickboard, unfortunately, it isn't the normal body position and most people let their feet break the surface of the water.
@@CoachRobbBeams Coach by beginning I meant the 2nd clip where she was using the kickboard properly but her head was up.. we can use that technique to fix our kicking and learn to maintain our body horizontal??
Coach Robb, I am at beginner level and only know to flutter kick while floating with head down and able to perform only 3-4 strokes while holding the breadth. And I am not able to breath while swimming , the moment I lift my head either sideway or up, I just forget to kick and start drowning back. I feel like its impossible to learn swimming. So, I bought a kick board to help me learn breathing , but even while holding the board I start sinking in and can never swim forward while only kicking. what am I doing wrong and how do you suggest I learn breathing? Do I concentrate on proper techniques of stroke and arm movement and believe eventually I will be able to breathe while swimming or forget all the techniques and just learn to breathe while just doing a dog paddle. Please suggest
Jassun40-thank you for the comment and watching the video! I would strongly suggest that you start swimming with a pull buoy and just focus on rotating to breathe one length of the pool at a time. Your hips are dropping more from you picking your head up to breathe than your lack of kicking. Please give this a shot and let me know about your results. -Coach Robb
Ditto. I am 47. I have already completed my 11 days of swimming training. I take a breath and dip in water. Make some kicking. After 4-5 feet I can do that. Once I raise my head to breath my legs stop kicking and I sink
100% Yes. Focus on pushing your chest down a bit and strive to get your arms and head in line (if you are looking at yourself from the side). Let me know if you run into any issues.
When I practice side breathing with a kickboard I get water up my nose or mouth when I put my face back in the water after a breath. Eveytime! I've been in swimming lessons consistently for 8 months once a week and I'm still struggling with my breathing.
Hi coach Robb, do you think it is advisable for a beginner in the water to use both a pull buoy and a kick board at a time while when kicking (even gently) to swim forward? I have problems to lift my head to take a breath (I do not know why it is so difficult for me...) and or to keep it above the water surface... Thanks in advance
Stan O. Stan-thank you for your comment/question! I am not sure how you can use a pull buoy and a kick board at the same time. Instead of trying to use both, I would focus on pressing your chest down to elevate your hips. If possible, take two or three boards and put them under your chest and simply float. Once your hips elevate while pressing your chest down, then start kicking. Please give this a shot and let me know how it goes for you. -Coach Robb
