Just a small note: If you keep on swimming regularly ( let's say at least 3-4 times a week ), your breathing will optimize itself naturally. Without realizing you'll start exhaling just before putting your head above the surface and you will only exhale as much as necessary. No worries if things don't work out directly.
Yeah. Another small note. If you do anything you're not used to for like a hundred hours, that thing is going to feel a lot more natural than it did before that effort ;) I've been struggeling with this and more of the basics for just 3 weeks, 2-3 times a week and man is it hard. Even if I got the first two exercises down, I sink like a rock if I rotate to the side and lift one arm out of the water.
I look like an idiot when I swim. No one taught me. It takes me 45 seconds to get to one end to the other and I choke on water constantly. But I’m trying! Slowly and surely.
I hope you have seen some good improvements! I am 100% self-taught, I rely heavily on video content to learn what I should be doing. @@Mrjuhlino try some super basic breathing drills. Just standing against the wall. Or buoy drills. It will help you relax and get comfortable underwater
WOW, I have been watching a lot of swimming videos and see everybody has own techniques. Most people say start exhaling as soon as your head goes under water and keep it until you inhale again so that you don't accumulate CO2 in your lungs. What Skill NT says is totally opposite, but I am willing to try it. I guess the key is to figure it out with lots and lots of practice.
I watched this video last night, and put it to the test today and was able to shave 2 and a half minutes off my 1,000 m pb... Incredible. Honestly, i was quite sceptical about only begging to breath out through my nose when my head is coming up for air. But it clearly worked a treat, felt i had more energy and took less time resting. Thank you so much for the video.
OMG! I've been struggling to breathe in freestyle for the last few days, watched tons of videos but nothing helped. Until I found this one. Your suggestion of breathing out just as you turn your head was all I needed. Finally I got the breath right! Thank you.
Started swimming lessons again. I was told to exhale all the time while looking down but the advice to just exhale as you turn your head for a breath makes sense to me. Exhaling all the time leaves my breathing out of sync. I'll try this. Thanks
Is it normal when you do the first exercise, I can only inhale back around 5 times before my chest starts to hurt (like wanting to breath normally)? Or does by practice I should be able to do the exercise for a longer period of time? Beginner swimmer... :)
well you can gauge an estimate? just thinking on my feet here, if you get a long balloon used for making balloon animals etc, you could get a pretty good idea how big it gets from a full lung exhalation, then half of that is near enough 50% lung capacity, half *that* is 25 and so that's a decent guide. or, in a slow, controlled full breath in and out, time it several times until each breath in or out is taking just about the same time from empty to full or vice versa (lets say 5 secs), and then divide that time into tenths or whatever, and there you can count each 10%, and get a feel for what 10% or 20% or 50% etc really feels like. so if you can time from empty lungs to full lungs as 5 seconds of smooth flow, each second is another 20% lung capacity. then if you try to just limit it to lose that final 30% that way, you'll know how it feels in your body to withhold the final 30% or so (although when practising this kinda stuff be careful to have breaks with full breathing so you don't get dizzy!)
Most of d coaches teaches to start exhaling just before entering into d water and exhale completely in d water and then to turn our head to take a breath...but hear u said really different thing to do, K will try to practice it and see how it feels, thanks for d video
I am newbie swimmer , as observed I get lot of burps when swimming . Can you tell what causes this and how to avoid ? Or is it good to burp ? Thanks !!
I cannot lift my head, even if I do, I just take in water. Do we need to deliberately jump up to breathe? Also, do we have to purse one side of our mouth to take in the water?
Struggle alot to breathe correctly When you exhale under water...always keep the breath rather than exhale..watched few diff videos with diff suggestions given. Do you actually open your mouth abit to exhale or just blow out...fearful of taking in water then by that way but really dont know. I can swim but only with head above...really want to get this. Is the swimmers mouth open and intaking water into it at the end of the in -breath? Looks like that and that they are holding water in their mouth at the start of the breath cycle.
I was quite surprised to hear that I should hold my breath in the beginning and then breathe out just in those few seconds before I breathe in again. I tried, and it worked, but only with hard concentration. Cause before watching your video I was always told to exhale constantly under water in order to avoid anxiety. +Emi Ramirez in the 50 I suggest breathing the least amount of times possible. In the 100 just get into a rhythm that is comfortable for you and that is faster for you. For example if I start breathing every 2 my arms spin faster but I don't catch as much water so I'm actually slower. Some people are faster breathing every 2. So you need to figure that for yourself
Exactly as Skills NT said. I suggest you try to keep it as low as possible. For example, in my case, in 50m I would only catch air a couple of times to the wall (25) and make máximum use of momentum -I'd catch air especially before the flip turn. In 100m sprint, I'd breathe every 6 strokes at first, and try to keep it every 4 strokes as much as possible.
I tend to sink when I turn my head for breathing in freestyle, and feel water on top of my face. So basically not able to breathe as I fear I will swallow water. Any tips here?
Can someone please explain why some people say you should constantly see bubbles when your head is under water vs what you just said...only breath out shortly before you breath in?
My question exactly. Every other trainer has a different approach. The people at SwimSmooth, for instance, are adamant that exhaling *all the time* while underwater prevents your legs from sinking too much by avoiding your chest being too buoyant. I have a feeling this is one of those things that may vary immensely depending on many factors, e.g., how many air remains in your lungs before breathing, or how fast you exhale.
i actually tried to imply his advise and I am not 100% sure, but I felt great today. I wasn't able to do it all the time (getting rid of patterns takes time) but I felt that this technique made me more relaxed and led to me taking quicker breaths.
+Dan Noz yes I know some people teach exhaling the whole time but in my experience you can do a better more relaxed technique with a little bit of buoyancy in the upper body. Once you dominate that, it is easier to swim at a fast pace with this technique. Like you said it take time to get rid of old habits, only through repetition you get good. Thanks for trying my advice, your feedback is really important to me.
It's my theory... This breathing skill is effective for pool swimming or short distance swimming... The other breathing skill that you mentioned is good for long distance or open water swimming. It's my theory...
This breathing skill is effective for pool swimming or short distance swimming...
The other breathing skill that you mentioned is good for long distance or open water swimming.
In pool environment, there's less surface drag...
When swimming short distance, you have enough stamina....
But in open-water, there's so much surface drag caused by wave and choppy water.
When you swim long distance, you need to be energy-efficient.
So it would be disadvantageous when you get higher in the water.
Since when is a higher body position of disadvantage when swimming?
Is ‘humming’ underwater correct? Also, I feel like my lungs are always to full to take in anymore air, yet I need to put my mouth out of water to exhale... I’m exhausted and out of breath by a few laps....
Very useful thx
