I have been swimming for almost a year now. Learned as an adult and I struggle with breathing. In theory,I understand everything you said but when I go in water, everything falls apart. I Swim at least twice a week and I am getting so frustrated because my instructor keeps telling me that she has taught me everything and now it's up to me. Even though lifting head up sinks the body, I do better when I turn enough that I see the ceiling compare to looking on my side. I hope someday I will swim beautifully
I have been swimming for a year now and still learning to breathe right. I too was told to look towards the ceiling and take my breathe and I can swim a length couple of times or so when I go for my practice. I have stopped taking lessons since February and go practice once a week
So, I’m part of the SWIMVICE Community and after taking some of those courses, I can now say that I can freestyle..I finally figured I needed to roll a little more to breathe comfortably. Thanks for all you do!
Hello Shannon, Thank you for sharing your experience! 🙏 I am so happy you are able to breathe comfortably which is a direct reflection of the practice you put in from the courses. I look forward to staying connected with you as you accomplish more goals in your swim journey! 👏🙌✨Best, Coach Mandy
This video is so helpful. Im a beginner learning freestyle and having trouble with the side breathing and sinking and lifting my head too high. I will pay attention to these things next time I practice. Thank you!
Thank you for your calm voice and cadence. It makes it so easy to listen to and digest. I can't stand it when sports people shout at me. That was the reason I quit swimming at age 10. But I recently started up again.
Thank you for your feedback and I totally understand. Glad you find value in the SWIMVICE channel. I look forward to staying connected with you through your swim journey. Best, Coach Mandy
Thank you for a great instructional video on proper breathing. You present it in a way that is easy to understand and the videos are excellent in showing the right and wrong way to breath.
Started working on this. I will concentrate keeping the lead hand below the elbow and shoulder. I have trouble keeping an arm in the above the shoulder quadrant. I have noted an increase in speed.
That is exactly what’s happening to me although my head doesn’t stick out as much. My legs start to sink after 5 breaths and I’m out of breath. Thx for the tips, I’ll give it a try. I was able to record my mistakes with GoPro and understanding better
Great video as usual and spot on. I would add that the timing of the pull on the non breathing side is critical and affects all the issues you mention. As you showed, if you pull before your head has returned to the centre, then your shoulder drops and your body loses shape and also drops. If you get your head back to the centre and then pull, these problems are resolved. I am currently correcting this exact issue and it’s hard, it really changes your timing and breathing pattern, but does feel immediately faster and more stable. Keep up the great work coach Mandy and thank you 🙏
Yes, exactly! It's definitely challenging on the front end but you immediately feel the difference as you described. Give it some time and it will click without as much mental effort. I have been trying to swim freestyle for 9 months quite regularly. I can swim freestyle fairly decent with breathing and all IF I use fins / flippers on my feet. If I take off the fins I fall apart when I attempt to take a breath. So is my kick bad ?? I have pointed toes like a ballerina and am exercising loose ankle drills at my home. With flippers - pretty good - without fins disaster. Do you have any suggestions and thanks !

Freestyle breathing is the single most hardest part. Can you also talk about how much air to exhale and inhale. Theres some mixed feelings. I still cannot do freestyle breathing
I find it hard to keep my forward arm both straight and relaxed. When I try to stay relaxed, my arm naturally bends slightly, easing the tension on my shoulder and neck. Is it just a matter of practice?
Great question, lol it definitely happens all the time. You start to get used to it. However, if it’s causing issues, you can always use ear plugs to keep the water out. I use cheap wax ear plugs for cold open water swims. 🙌🏼✅ -Coach Mandy
I've been struggling with my front hand automatically falling down as I take the breath, no matter how I try to turn the head. As if I have some sort of mental barrier - thinking that I would sink automatically if I don't balance myself with the hand going down. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Hi Coach Mandy... I was born with a club foot which was operated upon. So I have zero mobility in one ankle of mine which is stuck in a 90degree position. It atrophied my calf. So that leaves me with one normal leg and one very weak leg which can't bring to pointy-toe position because I can't move my ankle. This non-symmetry leaves me with a skewed kick which takes me all around the place. have no balance. This leaves my feet sinking, and my lack of balance makes it extremely difficult to breathe in the freestyle position without the stroke falling apart anduke losing my momentum. Can you please help? I'm supposed to swim daily to help relax my scoliosis affected spine. I'd appreciate any kind of advice. Thanks for the great content!
Hi Brian! I completely understand your limitation with your ankle. I would highly recommend the buoyancy neoprene wetsuit shorts. They provide the right amount of buoyancy to help you keep your body line stable without pulling you flat like a pull buoy would. The shorts should keep your legs aligned on the surface and you will still be able to rotate from your hips and will help you breathe much easier. Hope this helps and thank you for your support and feedback! 🙏 -Coach Mandy
@@SWIMVICE Thank you so much for the reply Coach Mandy. I am grateful for your insight. I couldn't find the buoyancy neoprene wetsuit shorts here in India but I'll try and source them from somewhere else. You're the best! 🙏🏼
I make this mistake while swimming and I’ve been trying to correct my form but it’s not easy to fix. Is there perhaps a breathing problem that causes the tendency to lift one’s head?
I noticed that you are not kicking your legs very much. I find it difficult to maintain streamline position without kicking my legs hard otherwise my lower body starts to sink. How can I correct that with minimal kicks/leg movement? Great video btw!
Yes, definitely. More kicking can increase your drag profile. I am using a 2 beat kick in this video while demonstrating. Thank you for your feedback and enjoy your practice! Best, Coach Mandy
I have been swimming for almost two years and I have sinking legs too. I've been told that I have to lower the chest, and my head has to inline with my body. However, this is so hard to do so. I drink the water if I don't lift my head.
Even though I have not seen your swim, you are most likely putting too much pressure in that area. This will cause you to sit lower in the water as shown and explained here: ruclips.net/video/cYYxxHlCeDo/видео.html If your head is buoyant and neutral, the air is right there. No need to lift your head or do anything extra to obtain a breath. Hope this makes sense. Enjoy your practice Zoey! 🙌🏊♂️✅-Coach Mandy
I feel like you missed something very important in this video and by that, I mean all the things you said were good but you did not mention anything about when to exhale, only inhale. This would have made this video so much better.
This is a quick tip video on technique only. I cover many points with freestyle breathing including breath control. However, if you are serious about making significant progress with your breathing technique and breath control, check out the SWIMVICE freestyle program today at: linktr.ee/swimvice Best, Coach Mandy
I visualise this and I do it perfectly. Then I get in the water and… MESS. I CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT turn my stupid neck to the left without doing ridiculous extra movement. It makes me so mad.
As a freestyle noob I find that natural, and relaxed is the only way to perfect the breathing. Just like walking--natural and relaxed. Consistent practice and you'll be fine.
