This is the dominant to Gb major, so Tiesto keeps at the tension and finally at 2:36 resolves it to Gb major, the tonic of the parallel key to Eb minor. Woo, it does sound happy, like we are celebrating. Now: 2:39 a passing Eb minor, 2:40 - Db major, dominant to Gb again. But this time we're not going into Gb major! Look what Tiesto does now (modulation): 2:42 Eb dominant 7th (surprise!), dominant to Gb minor 2:43 - we're in Gb minor now - modulation is done. 2:45 Db major in 1st inversion, this leads us strongly into... 2:47 Gb major - remember, this is the parallel of Eb minor, so we're basically back to the song's "home" key! 2:49 Cb major in 1st inversion. Sublime, strongly leads to... 2:51 - Fb major! This is the neapolitan chord! Sounds very baroque-like, doesn't it? Beautiful. 2:52 - B dominant 7th in 1st inversion (you won't hear a lot of that in popular music). Perfect. Tiesto continues with the Neapolitan cadence. 2:54 - back to Eb minor - an expected conclusion to B dom 7th. That's how Tiesto took us back home. Then the theme is repeated with a more intense arrangement. Now all you electronic music fans give credit to J.S. Bach and others, because it is due indeed.
I must say mate, bravo! You just broke down this song and analyzed and you did it very well! Rarely see guys like you analyzing songs in RUclips :D But I must say, old Tiesto Trance songs has often got a lot of classical cadences and other things from Classical music, maybe he found out when he made the Adagio for Strings remix that it makes the songs/remix sound so strong and energetic without going too 'fat' or 'deep' sounding.
The Neapolitan chord progression is La Folia. It's almost the same progression as RAM's Kingdom of Heaven (which uses Haendel's variation of the age-old La Folia theme. For the hundreds of composers who used this theme from the end of the 16th c. onwards, see www.folias.nl
Justin Greenwood I have to disagree. In my reception, those have some stark differences in harmony which makes them have different moods. I will point those that stand out to me the most: (roman numerals for major key, vi = minor tonic) 1. Tiesto goes vi - (short) IV - V... - I - IV(6) - V... VI dom 7 - ii. This makes the beginning sound - to me - so joyful and uplifting. only the VI dominant comes as a surprise to lead into the new key (Gb minor). 2. Handel goes vi - III dominant - I - V - ii. Notice how much faster he "jumps" to the ii tonality and that he uses the III major chord before going to I, while Tiesto uses the "happy" IV - V - I. Also, Haydn's use of pauses in his piece is crucial to how e.g. the III to I transition works (normally would sound rather too abrupt) Haydn doesn't introduce the VI dominant (which in his piece would be be D major). Tiesto uses the III major only by the end of the theme. And finally, the greatest difference for my ears is this: Haydn doesn't use the Neapolitan chord in his piece while in Tiesto's song it is - in my reception of the song - quite crucial. I'd like to write a blog about harmony in popular music, if only there were people interested... I'm not sure if they are... if someone is, just give me a heads-up - comment. And to you Justin Greenwood - I know the above looks pretentious on paper but just play both pieces or harmonic progressions on an instrument and give it a thought. To me, those pieces have too big differences.

This was when trance was awesome. Now if I show a trance song to someone everybody says what is this. I'm only 15 but I listened to Tiesto in my dad's and his brothers' cars since I was 5. People my age haven't even heard about this side of Tiesto. They don't know the roots of electronic music. I can't say I don't like todays music but I miss the old trance... :(
