    I have the same 2.5. My first motor. My grandfather bought it in ‘89 and sat in the bilge of his boat for 25 years, using it most of the year. My first motor I ever tinkered with, and it still runs almost every day to get me to work and back.

  • @alasdair4161
    @alasdair4161 2 года назад +14

    They are great little motors, I have the 3.5 in that range and would never be without one. Something to keep in mind especially with internal tank motors
    is to always open the vent before opening the fuel tap. If there's pressure build up in the tank from being in the sun etc it can flood the engine by overwhelming
    the float valve and that will make starting much more difficult. Opening the fuel cap first will allow the carb to fill by gravity alone and starting will be much easier.
    I also leave the cap loose with the tank drained during storage to prevent the tank from being stretched due to pressure build up (as happens with plastic jerry cans)
    Cheers, and thanks for posting.

    I had a2 hp suzuki 2stroke given to me, nearly identical to your motor. my buddy had it given to him! He never used it, sat in hi garage for a dozen years. I got it running immediately. Then it stalled immediately. It was missing a screw that secures to carb to intake. My buddy who gifted it to me said he use to selll them t sears in the 90's. I use chainsaw gas in mine. i really like ho light and compact it is. I run mine on a 18 foot canoe.

    I never fooled with anything less than 15 HP, but I gotta say- that thing does a hell of a job, all things considered. I'm quite impressed it's able to, I assume, dry out the transom with you sitting that far aft. I imagine it'd actually get over the hump if you were forward?

    While I appreciate the video showing the motor, running a 2 stroke out of fuel is not a good idea. The oil in the fuel is what lubes all the internal parts. You will have a momentary lean condition when running out of gas, thus also lessening the lubrication. Just a FYI.

    My Dad has one that I've used, and the only thing I dislike, its that once it starts, the boat starts going! There's no Neutral, which means... there's no reverse! To go backwards, you need to spin the motor to face backwards, and when you reach your destination (such as a dock) you have to reach over the motor to turn it off. Don't turn it back to facing you, or it'll push you away from the dock! Grrrr!!!!

    I picked up a brand new 1993 Johnson 3 hp outboard motor yesterday for $350 cash. It's never had gas in it. Someone received it as a gift & never used it. 30 years old, but still brand new! It has some features that I like over your Mercury model. The gas on/off knob is the same knob for the choke. It is located in the front, twist is gas shut off, pull knob out to choke it (no reaching around to the side). It has a neutral/forward lever. Thus, you can stop without having to turn your motor off all the time. Most of all, it has a twist throttle handle, that can be flipped over when going in reverse. I believe the same vintage Evinrude is the same motor (both made in Belgium). It's a smooth 2 cylinder, too. For the price I paid, I don't think anything on the market today compares. It even has two extra prop shear pins and two cotter pins under the hood cover, & instructions on how to start it if your pull cord breaks. Personally, I'd rather have a 2-stroke over the 4-stroke. I have 4 chainsaws. Mixing gas is no big deal, and the engines can be held in any position when it 's a 2-stroke. I look forward to adding it to my Old Town Discovery Sport 15 that I haven't used for a few years. I am very happy with my recent find!

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy

      The kill switch on mine is quite sensitive and often trips me up when trying to start it. It doesn't seem to hold the button out far enough no matter what. Try to not run it on older fuel that has been sitting around - especially if it's ethanol blended fuel.

    Same motor but an 03. Not a fan of the throttle and reverse but hey it was free from a neighbor of mine who got it with his sportspal canoe with the flat transom, he said it didn't start... it started 3rd pull for me. Guess he only know electric start.
    It's a great little backup motor incase u get stranded... happened once at night to me and swore never again.

    Hey man I have a 96 mercury 4hp and it won’t start do you have any idea why this is? It’s getting spark and I cleaned the carb.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  3 года назад

      Carbs can be very tricky - when you say you've cleaned the carb, did you spray carb cleaner in it - or remove it and disassemble it completely? Even if you did the latter, sometimes the smallest thing can block the circuit for the fuel to flow. If it's getting spark and there's compression the only thing missing is fuel. If you know the carb is good, check for a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel. Good luck!

    Hi Wayne what is the fuel consumption like ..ho2 long the full tank last for 2.5 mercury..thanks

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  3 года назад +1

      The tank holds less than 1 US gallon and I have run it around our river for about an hour and not emptied it. I bring extra fuel every time just in case. It’s a small, and not fast motor so the fuel consumption is very low.

    2 stroke is a giant step backward. So is water cooling. Don't leave fuel in your motor. Pour it back when you're done for the day and run it dry.
