- Steve Morgan gets to run the new Mercury 15 EFI 4-stroke against the existing 15 2-stroke tiller. This is because in Australia, the 2-stroke option is no longer available. The EFI 4-stroke is nearly as light and nearly as fast - the gap is narrowing and the 4-stroke is a viable option for Aussies.

I love the smell of 2 stroke in the morning
Every time I get a whiff of a 2 stroke I flash back to my childhood boating with my father.
2 stroke smell is the smell of great days gone passed,my daddy and freedom.
And in the afternoon. Midnight. During the day. On hollydays. And so on. Two strokes for ever!
How's the serenity!
Billy -I feel the same way about diesel exhaust..just love that stink!
Compare is: 1)the two stroke is assembled with half the parts of the four stroke. 2) the two stroke cost less at initial purchase. 3) the two stroke cost less in maintenance costs. 4) the two stroke is inherently simpler to maintain due to its far fewer parts. 5) the doesn’t need a charging system to keep itself running. 6) the two stroke is more robust due to it not having near as many cheap plastic parts mounted on the engine. 7) finally, once the gas hose has been removed and the engine has been allowed to run til carbs are out of fuel, the two stroke can be taken off the the boat, slung over your shoulder, thrown into the back of your car without worrying about oil leaking out of it
.... and you can’t buy two strokes in Australia.
Fishing Monthly Magazines can’t buy them new in the states any more either. Part of the socialist encroachment of limiting options by way of bureaucratic regulations.eroding your choice is part of the process for trimming away your rights, til you have none left. Sad
EXACTLY ! In the sailing world, we use 5hp - 9.8 hp longshafts with "pusher props" for trailer sailers up to about 28 ft. Two strokes are much simpler, MUCH lighter, vastly cheaper to service & maintain, and vastly more reliable - which is a massive issue when you are travelling to remote areas like we do. Banning their importation was asinine. Running a complicated four stroke engine totally dependent on computers in salt water - one of the harshest operating environment on the planet - in the name of "emissions compliance" is outright idiocy.

I thought it was to prevent overcrowded waterways from becoming toxic cesspools from all the unburned oil being pumped out the exhaust. Now I know it’s part of the liberal agenda to take over the world.
Thanks.
noticed that when talking about weight of the 4 stroke it was mentioned that new 4 stroke is "lighter than the old 4 stroke." I thought we were comparing 4 stroke to 2 stroke. Sounds like a commercial to me.
agreed
Still have my Mercury 25 2 stroke for over 20 years , love it, its way lighter than the new 4 stroke 25
The two stroke is not trimmed properly during the drag race, it was porpoising.
strongly agree
Expect a long penalty for your teams penis’s
Cocktails were great too many drinks in a row I loved pooping in the United States of American
Don't disagree but watch the start of the race (@3:40), the 2 stroke took off slightly later either because the driver had a quicker reaction or the EFI did a better job of metering the fuel, and also the 2 stroke started its run in the wake of another boat, so it was getting punched whilst the 4 stroke had clean water. Two stoke for the win but I would probably take the EFI if I had to pick.
It had some wake to go over. That is not porpoising.
It is quicker out of the hole when you're a boat length ahead of the other guy when you take off lol
Yeah funniest thing ever... 4 strokes are heavy vibrating dogs of things
@@dave216dx2 strokes vibrate more
@@bebeslife4519 Your an idiot.. havent you held the tiller of any tiller steered 4 stoke rubish?.. I suppose your one of the cocks that beleives the 4 stroke is quiter at full throttle also?
Yep thats right dickhead.... two stroke twins are hard to balance .. meanwhile 4 stroke shit has balance shafts to try and take out vibrtaions
Fucking spastic
That 2 stroke is a Tohatsu / Nissan underneath. I got a real Mercury 15 2 stroke, Euro/US spec, weighs 34kg, eats 20hp 4 strokes for breakfast, throttle and gears in twist grip, got all the features and a doddle to carry, burns clean and economical.
looking to buy one I found for sale used with electric start, you just convinced me
@@advantagemarine7305 best of luck with it! Have mine 20 years, last run 2 days ago, never misses a beat.
So is the 4 stroke
I’m so glad you replaced the engine sound with a bunch of generic music... said no one ever.
Your sarcasm is appreciated and your comment noted.
So the heavier motor is faster out of the hole and the 2 stroke is faster top end.
It's all in the prop in my opinion.
Lol great comment
So sarcastic yet technically not sarcastic.
So..in other words; no good reason to change over to the new stuff if your 2 stroke still works fine....
Not mixing fuel was reason enough for me
Import of 2 strokes banned in Australia after june . thats the only reason
the 4 stroke requires more maintenance than a 2 stroke no getting around that
Not all 2-strokes - just ones that don’t meet the emissions standards - like this 2-s Mercury.
really? you cant be bothered to pour 1 tiny pint of oil into 6 gallons of gasoline that will last you a week?
That top speed difference was more than slight.
Let’s compare the purchase price as well as servicing and repair :)
Say what you want, 1 HUGE advantage to a 2 stroke is they are infinitely easier to pull start. I started a 100 horse Chrysler way back when with 1 hand. 20 horse, and larger 4 strokes are a nut buster.
I want a 2 stroke Merc. Love the weight saving. Love the smell of 2 stroke oil.
Fishing monthly magazine this was very very biased towards 4 cycle engines. You spoke more about 4 stroke engines vs 2 stroke. You also didn't show us all the data. The drag race speed of the 2 stroke was what. You certainly did not sell me on a 4 stroke with your lack of information and biased opinion. Infact you have reinforced my love of the 2 stroke. Now let's do this again but this time I'll do the testing and I'll post real world results.
Put EFI on the two stroke. 4 stroke would no longer compete at all
Show a top-end rebuild for each motor. . . compare them and the cost then. This is for people who don’t know anything about motors.
AWESOME video guys
Impressive showing for the older, simpler carb 2 stroke!
Merc 2 stroke didnt smoke once, outran the 4 stroke by FAR. Didnt sell me on 4 stroke at all.
A prop change can change that really quick. And u never have to mix oil every time you buy gas💪
Synthetic oil and a properly tuned 2 stroke smokes very little.
MrDavidelliottjr or just use the injection
The drag race aerial view at 4:36 you can clearly see the 2 stroke hesitate and then hit the gas. Sorry, if you are gonna review do it fairly. 2 stroke won both out of the hole and top end.
Indeed, but notice that they say "EFI quicker out of the hole", not 4 stroke, which is a fair statement
That 4 stroke is built by tohatsu for mercury
And they are cheap as hell. Cheap plastic parts that break especially in cold weather
I’ve rewatched this video 100 times now, I can’t figure out what it says
@@myselfmaybe4940 lol
I like that they seperated the throttle and shifter. A feature I personally cared for.
What he didn't mention is that Tohatsu is the manufacturer of the small hp 4-stroke outboards for both Mercury and Evinrude.
Good ol` two stroke , reliable as hell and easy to fix IF anything goes wrong , which is never !! Servicing , way cheaper or better still , do it yourself !
I have to say this was a clever commercial. I'm not sure if the later model 2-strokes are the same as the 2005 and down models but those 15 hp motors were beefed up 9.9 hp motors, same displacement. The 15 hp usually ran about 10% faster on the same boat as a 9.9 but had the same off the line acceleration. This new 15 hp is a detuned 20 hp model. How about running the new 20 hp against the old 20 hp 2-stroke? They were a detuned 25hp. So this video supports what I have been saying for 15 years. If you want to repower with a 4-stroke get 30% more rated hp to equal your 2-stroke performance, and hope your boat can support all the extra weight.
Well I know what my next tiny boat will be, those look like quality!
Don’t forget the 4 stroke has to go in for oil changes several times a season and must have belts changed and fuel filters kept perfectly clean. The 2 stroke has no maintenance other than an impeller every few years.
several oil changes a year ? Most do annual. like me.
One oil change only. Trolls so much better than two stroke and now the Yamaha 25 4 stroke weighs the same as the old 2 strokes. Give me 4 stroke all day
@@sdanville the larger Mercury motors call for 100 hour oil change intervals. For a charter boat, that could be every other week.
A small 4 stroke Suzuki is only once a year oil change. I've had my 2 stroke 80's Evinrude for decades an there are still services that need to be done including Air Filter. Remove, clean or if really dirty, replace here.
Spark Plug. Remove and replace. ...Screws, Nuts and Bolts. Check and tighten all external screws, nuts and bolts. ... especially a 40 yr old outboard like mine. I'll take my new 5 year warranty 4 stroke Suzuki today even though my old Evinrude has served me well.
@@ks-bg5uk feel free to send me your old smoke makers. The EPA will pry them out of my cold dead hands.
I'm happy with my 86 15hp Evinrude thank you
We need Anglapro in the USA! Such a cool little boat. Would love one for Great Lakes salmon.
Yea but nothing beats the smell of 2 cycle early in the morning to get you to the fish.
Sharp lil boat👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Not convinced that 4 strokes are better. They still weigh alot more , cost more to buy , not as quick and with more moving parts the servicing will be more cost. You can't lay them down like a 2 stroke either.
Simply not enough reasons to buy a 4 stroke unless its in a big engine category.
mrdilligaf1968 4 strokes aren’t really any better than 2 strokes except for a linear torque/hp line and a little better fuel emissions stuff
four strokes run ten thousand hours . two strokes nothing like that maybe 2/3000
that is fake news and bull shit and you know it today's new Mercury 2 strokes run just as long as there 4 stroke counter parts mercury makes
2 stokes use way more gas
Kfc Buiscut etecs are 2 stroke and use less gay than 4 strokes.
In small motors, 2 stroke all the way. Purely due to power to weight.
But they also are simple and less to go wrong.
A 15HP 4 stroke would sink the back of my little tinny. 4 strokes are also way overpriced.
But on a big boat, give me a 150hp 4 stroke any day. Quiet, fuel efficient, no 2 stroke oil etc
Watched a commercial to watch a commercial....
I love my 8hp mariner 2 stroke starts 1 pull even after weeks of sitting
Forgot to mention how much more expensive the 4 stroke is over the 2 stroke
prop makes a big difference. never seen a 4 stroke with a better holeshot yet.
4 stroke EFI starts like a dream and keeps running, even when air temps are in the 20's.
umm like every other motor? why would a 2 stroke not?
@@maxegloff3001 EFI no choke or carbs, starts and stays running first time everytime in cold weather.
Yea but two stroke are almost maintenance free . Just change spark plugs and lower unit fluid good to go . There two strokes from 1980’s that are still running today
As long as I can get my hands on a two stroke that's what I'm running lighter and more dependable btw a lot easier to work on!!! Love my 25 hp Evinrude
I run a 25 hp evinrude as well. wouldnt trade it for the world
Breton Deardorf I'm looking for a 35hp Evinrude with remote start
I have a 1985 evinrude 20hp that bought brand new and honestly it has never had a part changed except for the water pump and gear oil. Runs like a top and has started up every time over the last 33 years! Wouldn't trade it for any new motor!
Replace that carb with some 35hp omc carb (38mm) or 30 hp (32mm) carb and youll be flying the 4-strokes out of water.
Imagine that. Less rotating mass and a power stroke every second stroke instead of every 4th. Can't believe people think 4 strokes are superior outboard motors
Robby G13 15 hp = 15 hp
Hans Anders nope. They changed where and how it’s measured
2 stroke= power stroke every revolution.
4 stroke= every other revolution.
Please get it straight.
Cant believe a country like Australia would ban 2 strokes ..its ridiculous
consider why the 2 stroke has a faster top end it is because they propped the 4 stroke for low end and even with the 4 stroke revving higher rpm it still did not run as fast as the 2 stroke on top end ....you place the exact same prop on both and the 2 stroke will hole shot with ease and probably run same speed at top end ..i used to kneeboard behind my evinrude 9.9 behind my 14" alumacraft flat bottom and my 160lb adult friend operating the boat and his 105lb wife in the front of the boat and my 180lb but on the kneeboard with a 9.5"X10 pitch prop and for pulling kids on tubes all day long without even a sweet that little boat is so much fun and I can pull it to lake with my 06 nissan altima 4 door sedan but today i am just to damn old to kneeboard and my big boat has now become the party boat and we can take 8 people out and pull kids around so i finally sold the old flat bottom and 9.9 to a young man that wants to take his kids fishing but is on a budget like i used to be on and he loves that little trusty 9.9
To be a fair water test should be done while both 2-4 stroke motors are revving towards their max wot rpm range factory stated, for that will need to be correctly propped for equal load and boat size. Motor/transom height, trim, deck load distribution also accounts for having a faster or slower combo.
Evirude -Quiet, faster, lighter and burns slightly less gas than heavy 4 strokes with less maintenance. Think that covers it..
even in the 15hp range? I tought they only had those engines in the high hp numbers.
bob rosco the Lowest etec is 25 hp everything else is carbs
The Evinrudes are much more noisier at medium to high rpm than 4 strokes!
left out durable ..mercury cant hold up in my area .run around looking for place to die
I want a boat like those
I just bought a January 2018 Mercury 2 stroke for my 10ft dinghy.....it hammers 😎
So I buy the 2 stroke. Thanks for the info.
It seems like the motors are trimmed differently compared to eachother because of the way the 2-stroke is skipping over the water compared to the 4 stroke, this may have reduced the top speed op the 2-stroke.
Not only that. 2stroke has much more tourque so it shoud jump out of water faster
They tried to make 2 stroke to appear slower by letting the 4 stroke to jump the start. Shame on them!
I got the 20hp electric start version and it's an amazing motor but so expensive! $5900 fitted with a battery which is basically 3 of these 15hp two strokes. Such a shame they aren't available anymore.
Yamahas website
For 6k you can get a used boat with a 150
Im zanzibar local people run those 2 stroke 15hp yamaha motors on almost 1.5 ton wooden boats all the day full throtle and cavitating over revving a lot. It is an absolutely work horse.
I wasn’t impressed with the four stroke and never was, for outboard motor’s anyway. I’ll definitely stick with my two stroke outboards!!
Dude I was the same way untill I got a 4 stroke burn a shit ton less fuel and it’s insanely quiet
Noise measured with dB confusion. Approximately every 3 dB change is double noise level. So 2 dB difference is 2/3 more quiet between 2 stroke and 4. In Canada, we get out of our new 20hp Hondas, portage our gear a km to same boat and a 20 year old 9.5hp Merc. Way more torque, speed, and more tactile speed adjustments to troll.
I’ll stick with 2 strokes. Cheaper, lighter, faster, and no oil changes.
The lower horsepower Mercury outboards are actually made by Tohatsu Japan .
This is why I'm getting a 2 stoke
Love my 15hp 2stk Mercury. How does the new 4 stk go at slow trolling speed?
All Terrain Australia very quiet, my dad has the 2018. Runs like a dream. It sputters a bit at high rpm though...
I have a 4 stroke, lots of low end torque for which is perfect for trolling. I've towed in a broken down boat much bigger than mine easily. I also get really good gas mileage. I wouldn't go back to a 2 stroke.
I love those boats, sadly can't get one around here.
Great video bring those outboards to Canada which has 80% of the world's fresh water lakes
Used to be 2 strokes cost a lot more that 4's(Dirt bikes anyway)! Nowadays every Tom, Dick and Harry wants a 4 STROKE(Dirt Bike), only thing they know! Outboards opinions seemed to be mixed! My 84' 15 Evi is still stock still runs strong! As far as 4 stroke prices........... "Supply and DEMAND"!
How many cylinders in each? I'm guessing the 2-stroke is a twin, but the 4?
i think the 4 stroke guy got the jump on the throttle by at least 0.6 secs prior to the 2 stroke..., is that correct ? decent job though guys. not trying to give you a hard time.., i'm just a fickler for accuracy.
you mercury guys and yamaha need to develop a new 2stroke with with all the EPA regulations 4 strokes for those who like them and 2stroke for those that like 2 strokes
They make more money on every service then a 2 stroke😯
Fuel injected, supercharged charged two stroke......
Joshua Demoll
Yamaha can be on it’s own. Way better engine.
That merc 4 stroke is a Tohatsu with just a merc tiller. Tohatsu make all their smaller outboards.
Wish they still sold new 2stroke small outboards in the United States like 6-20hp...
wish we could get those boats in the U.S. VERY nice
The 2 stroke is slightly faster as it's a tohatsu 18hp. I have the us 15 2 stroke which has the gears on the throttle.
how well has it served you? looking to buy a used one i found with electric start.
Wonder if the propeller pitch is the same?
skojo3e I feel like they should have the motors propped correctly for the motor / boat combo, that 15 two stroke will blow past the 4 stroke dog.
4 strokes have more torque at low RPMs than 2 strokes, however, 2 strokes can usually run higher RPMs on top. So since they are small engines on small boats, they probably have a 9x9" prop. The 4 stroke will out power the 2 stroke at the lower RPMs, they will run identical around 2-3000 RPMs, and the 2 stroke will walk away from the 4 stroke as you approach Mac RPMs. The efi 4 stroke should get better fuel efficiency, but will need more maintenance, and cost enough more you won't recoup the price difference. The 4 stroke will be less prone to carbon fowling if you run your motor at low RPMs for long periods of time. As in trolling. The 2 stroke will weigh less, cost less for maintenance, and usually go faster, but yes, you have to mix oil and gas, and they usually prefer gasoline with no alcohol in it.
drove left handed and pull start with my left hand until i was like 9 maybe when i broke my elbow and was so stubborn i just drove with my right hang and pull start with my left and i’m 15 now and it still sticks
The 4 stroke is not a Mercury. It's a Tohatsu that Mercury puts their name on. The small 4 stroke Evinrude is also a Tohatsu.
still believe that in small outboards, 2 stroke is a winner in ease of maintenance but also in power delivery. I still use a vintage 20 HP on my Boston Whaler Sport 11 where the weight is an issue. The 65 lb Chrysler still puts the heavy "boat" on plane with two adults and their gear. However, it will struggle with 3 adults and an 9 year old though!
What model and brand are those boats for the test ? Very neat ! I want one
So spend twice as much for a motor that is slower? only weighs a couple pounds less and is only 2 dB quieter? I’ll stick with my two stroke thank you!
Two strokes that don’t meet the emissions regulations won’t be available in Australia anymore. This is an Australian video
TWLML420
They don’t meet emission standards. You also have to mix oil with the gas, which makes 4 strokes cheaper in the long run.
ThePrimeGameProtector what about maintenance?
@@primeribgaming2681 so in other words it's cheaper in 20 years.
@@FishingMonthly Emission regs need to be revamped. These little motors were never having an impact on the environment. So sick of this malarky.
you haven"t convinced me either. My 1995 mercury mariner still runs like new and is way quicker and just as fuel efficient as my mates new 15hp evinrude 4 stroke and its considerably lighter!
Evinrude dont make 4 strokes.
@@turbostyler yep they do. Google it.
@@ianw3294 I stand corrected. Thank you sir for schooling me today!
2 stroke is way better than 4 stroke I have a double cylinder 6hp Yamaha but I definitely think that Mariner is the world's best out board
wish I could find a boat like that in the USA.
I like those high sided boats. Those would be great for intercoastal fishing.
Mercury / Mariner 15hp 2t is 34 kilo NOT 42
The guy in the 4 stroke jumped the drag race. And still lost in the end. SO let's do the Maths
New 15hp 2 strokes $2200
New 15hp 4 stroke $3500
Lets say it's 50% better on fuel. you can have to spend $3500 odd of fuel for each to equal the purchase price of both motors. Which is approximates 350 trips at $10 a trip and probably 10 years of boating just to cover the difference in initial costs of purchase. The 2 strokes you can service yourself for $50 a year, impeller and spark plugs. 4 stroke $200 a year. This is why I LOVE 2 STROKES
.... and if you read the description you’ll find that 2-strokes are no longer available in Australia!
@@FishingMonthly guess the value of my old 2 stroke just went up
Love those small boats ..
My 1984 Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke and crest liner does 26 mph, I’d like to see a 4 stroke do that
Noticing how bad the two stroke was porpoising at the high speed run trim was set wrong they were not set up equally or else both boats would have been doing the same porpoising action
Erik Hadinger I think also the four stroke is heavier so that may have come into play but you're right
I too thought bout set up issues and who's to say if either was propped correctly for the application.
What is the make of those aluminum boats?
Hey! It's the Visio Racer intro theme!
What boat is that?! Like that it’s that wide and it has good features!
Don’t think we have that in the states.
Anglapro - but most local aluminum hulls have a similar shape.
2 stroke the best !
What size boat is that looking for my first boat just to get around in for fishing 🎣
The difference definitely means more at the larger HP's. My experience is 40hp + four strokes become a better choice allround. Late model Mercury Optimax and Evinrude efi outboards compeat but older models are really thirsty and noisy dinosaurs that have had their day.
Prop pitch is why there is this difference.
What about the trolling speed? Did you test which can run at the slower speed? This is what I experience with my yamaha 4 stokes, it it a bit too fast at minimum speed.
If the guy in the 2 stroke would of kept it straight it would of been faster out of the hole.
I'm always seeing them pulled in
I have a ‘17 merc 40hp 4 stroke and wouldn’t trade it for nothing..... I like performance and it’s on a 1556 Havoc, does 38mph on gps. Boat rated for a 50 also. That’s 13 pitch stock aluminum prop gonna be changing to a 14 stainless maybe 15. Jus some info....
Does the EFI model run the same pitch prop that could explain its quickness out of the hole but no legs uptop ✌️
Same props
What about the weight? Four strokes are typically heavier than 2 Strokes. And, is it a problem laying a 4-stroke down on that side to transport.
it can be done
Only advantage to a 4 stroke is emissions, they weight more and are slower. I will run a 2.0 2.4 or 2.5 Merc till the parts are gone. Then I will run a new G@ Evinrude, which is 2 stroke lol.
nothing better than the old 2 stroke will out preform the 4 stroke anytime and last longer to
K buy a bigger 2 stroke.. got it
The 2 stroke is made by Tohatsu
Is there a similar boat that’s available in the USA? That anglapro core looks slick. I need one
for longer distance and heavy load does the 4 strokes wins?
I would think that for longer distances the 2 stroke would win, but for the longest distance, probably the 4 stroke as it is more fuel efficient. Not sure about weight tho
What was the 2 stroke top speed?
Is propeller the same pitch in both cases? It looks like it's higher on 2-stroke, so the boat accelerates slower and top speed is higher.
