- Comparing Suzuki and Mercury Outboards? Well, in this video, we show how we replaced our previous Mercury with a 9.9 Suzuki, and the difference between the two has been significant. Clearly, it's one of the best Jon boat or small skiff engines we've ever used.
Although this channel is certainly a fan of both types of engines, there is a lot to like with the Suzuki 9.9, especially with the fact that you can modify it to make it a 20 HP as well.

I didn't see an actual comparison between the merc and Suzuki....
Hey I Love this video ! All info found here, everything what I needed. Thanks 😎
People sleep on suzuki outboards but honestly i think they are a fantastic value and dependable. My father needed a new outboard for our old skeeter bass boat and we dropped in a new 65hp suzuki in the 90s. That boat is still used almost every weekend to this day. We were honestly skeptical but we also had a cabin cruiser kept docked at a marina and we see commercial fisherman with suzuki outboards and they tell us all the time that they hard to beat.
Where did you buy it from? Online? If so which site?
I have the same Suzuki. Love it
I got a 25df few yrs ago after 15yrs of merc, will never look back
Nice little motor!
Now I know why we didn't run into you at Pirate's Cove this weekend. 😂
BTW - Took Mad Ludwig out through Oregon Inlet for the first time. Got a solid track with waypoints now 👌
Looks awesome, I have a Lowe 1240 as well with a Suzuki 2.5 but I want to upgrade not sure if I should go with the 6hp or 9.9hp
6hp is likely plenty for that skiff.
Just put a 6hp Suzuki on my Grumman 1240. Awesome outboard for the money
does the motor lock down when in forward gear?
Here in argentina only outboard we couldnt kill Suzuki
What prop are you running?
yeah, I never used my safety kill switch lanyard either. (-:
How you call that thing to lift the boat?
Boat lifting "thingamajig", lol.
Can't go wrong with a Suzuki outboard. They are rock solid as long as you keep up with maintenance.
They are Usually much Cheaper than other big brands and in the past some dealers were doing the 3 + 3 warranty. I have a DF25AS and its the same block as a DF30. Can upgrade it easy like the 9.9 suzuki. I have a 2019 that has less than 10 hours on it. It was in a storage building for 3 years then transported with fluids in it being bounced around and cranked up in 2 pulls. I am about to start using it again more.
The reason I went with the Suzuki 25 vs a Yamaha 25 at the time. The suzuki was a 3 cylinder with more bottom end power vs a 2 cylinder on the Yamaha, also a lot cheaper, and at the time I got the 3+3 warranty. I am a suzuki fan because I have had several Suzuki atv's like the Ltz 400 and several Drz 400 enduro bikes and ran the crap out of them with zero problems.
That stinks you had problems with your Mercury. I believe the mercs 30hp and lower are made by Tohatsu. Carbs are fine and easier to work on, but if you don't run all of the fuel out of the carb/ carbs and let it sit, it can be a nightmare on anything carbureted. If you were to get another 30hp or below "merc" again, I would suggest just getting a Tohatsu as they are cheaper and come with a better warranty usually.
Good luck with your suzuki.
Wow. Dang good comment. Thanks!!
Totally agree as I run my 9.8 Tohatsu dry after every use.
Having just purchased a Suzuki DF50, I could’ve saved a good chunk of money if I went with a Merc or other option.
@@chevyon37s How is that? The mercs around here seem to be $2k more for a 50hp vs the suzuki 50.
I have the same outboard check the prop pitch put a number 12
Overheats in idle. The book says that it is not advisable to troll with this motor. Also had warranty issues that were never covered. A very big no.
No to mercury or Suzuki?
I have a 14 with 6hp wanna really upgrade to a 9.9
I have a narrow 1432...with a 88 6hp johnson...it's flys..and the boat is rated only for an 8 h.p. I'm either gonna buy a new 9.9 or a 15h.p undecided as of now.
Both motors are made by Tohatsu. Just diff stickers and paint. Tohatsu builds every small outboards up to 40 hp. Big manufacturers don’t have time for these little motors. When I worked for Yamaha. They had 120 diff models. They make money from big engines
I know Mercs, Evinrude and Nissan are made by them but I'm pretty sure Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki all make their own outboards. The Suzuki 6hp for example is built to different spec than the other 5 and 6 horse outboards.
Yaa. Half your video is yapping.
Suzuki Is the best outboard ever 2 AND 4 st
I thought all small engines 30hp and under were manufactured by Nissan/Tohatsu! No?!? Brunswick/ Mercury did own 90% of Tohatsu. My 2013 25HP Yamaha is a Tohatsu!
They are all tohatsu
I have a 2.5 a 6hp and a 9.9 Suzuki. My 9.9 ran great three times and has been dying on me ever since. Took to two shops and they cant find anything. It still dies randomly. Its a paperweight now. maybe its a lemon like your Mercury.
float pods
Yeh its heavy. Too heavy. If I had to do it all over again I would stick with a 2 stroke, much lighter. I lost my lower unit on my Suki only after 2 weeks, it shattered the lower unit. I have never seen a lower unit shatter until then. And not Covered. I ended up buying a lower unit on E -Bay and replacing it myself.
I tell you that suzuki df8/9.9/15/70/80/90 are the best engine in the entire world, there is no outboard engine less fuel consumption and reliabe on market.
They are certainly impressive.
suzuki on top beter honda and yamah
I just bought a brand new 9.9 anyone know if we can still do the upgrade to 20?
What price u get it at
