This song is one of the most beautiful and haunting ballads ever. It’s actually about domestic abuse but can be about so many other things. She apparently went in, wrote and sang the lyrics and that was it, that was the take. Absolutely crazy. She is never known for her song writing or her voice yet these are both so amazing. She’s is such a talent.
I remember Madonna being widely criticized in the 1980s for having no vocal talent and not being a good singer. They specifically compared her to Cyndi Lauper and stated that Cyndi would have longevity while Madonna would be forgotten in a few years. Cyndi Lauper is wonderful, but Madonna is in a class by herself. Madonna is a talented vocalist who I would describe as having a very commercially appealing voice. I was appalled by the criticism at the time, but attribute it to the amazing magnetism she possesses/possessed and her ability to so effectively push conservative boundaries which threatened those that criticized her. Thanks again for your wonderful reaction!
Thank you so much! :) It's such a shame that she was criticized - Her voice was/is beautiful, and she's always had the ability to adapt it to any style. That takes enormous talent. ❤️
Cyndi Lauper is also a living legend like Madonna! They are BOTH fabulous girls... I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert in 2023, and like Madonna.... Cyndi's still got it....
In my opinion, this is Madonna's masterpiece song, both musically and lyrically. This is also why i always loved 80's Madonna more than any other era of her. Her collaboration with Patrick Leonard and Steven Bray that whole decade was just amazing. They created a wonderful sound to her songs. Madonna's 80's catalogue are her best songs.
This song came out in early 1986 and it took forever to climb up to number one in June finally. It stalled forever at #2 behind Whitney Houston's - The greatest love of all. Those were the days.... We live to tell
I remember when the song/video premierd on MTV, they played it every half hour, and it was so completely different from anything she'd done before. Yes, there was "Crazy for You", but that was more of a mid-tempo ballad. This was so emotional and dramatic and worlds away from her earlier music. As I've gotten older, I've appreciated more and more just what a unique talent Madonna was and is.
OMG. Double treat today. So happy! This song was a huge risk. It is the first time appeared as a grown up, away from the lighter pop songs she was releasing til then. A six minute ballad, with an abstract storyline, that fades to nothing in the middle and comes back… and yet it was a #1 hit. I always think of the lyrics as a protrait of an abuse that one feels cannot be shared. And the questions on the bridge are so hauting… Now, to the live version!
Live To Tell was the beginning of my Madonna journey. It all started with this song when i was 13. Now i am 50 and my feelings for M are still the same. This song will always have a special place in my heart ❤
True blue will always be my fave madonna album and era - it’s when she became an icon imo and the queen of pop - the songs and videos put her in the same league as Prince and Michael Jackson - my other 2 fave artists and the holy trinity of pop music ❤
Hi! There's something about this song that just pulls me in. It's one of my favourites. The instrumental at the beginning, the beat. The storytelling. Her vocals. Beautiful!
I was thinking the exact same thing. Interesting that she picked this soon for the number. It worked amazing but i might have thought she would In This Life. But none of that takes away from one of the most emotional numbers ever in pop concerts.
Hi This is a masterpiece. Been a huge fan throughout her career and this song will always be a favourite. Was the first track released from the true blue album which at the time the record label were totally against. Was great seeing her progression from the like a virgin era, stripped back, and the birth of a new Madonna! I’m watching you from now on! Great to see two generations sharing past and present reactions together ❤❤
I’m glad you mentioned how expressive she is as an actress. Emoting all these feelings through her eyes. Under the right direction, Madonna can be a great actress. My favorite onscreen roles from her have been Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy, All the way Mae in A League of their Own, and Susan in Desperately seeking Susan. 👑
What a wonderful, heartfelt reaction. Did you know that this song was recorded once only! It was a one take because they needed a song for the movie, and not even meant to go anywhere, but it was so good that they made it the lead single. I’d love to have you react to her song “Gone”.
Amazing reaction!!!! So thank you for that.; I really enjoyed it. I am really glad that you are taking this Madonna journey. I would really love it if you would react to Madonna's live performance if Girl Gone Wild from her MDNA tour because it shows that after so many years when she's in her 50's she still has the same energy that she had when she was in her 20's. I think you will really enjoy it
Aww, thank you so much! :) We're loving the journey too! And thank you for suggesting that live performance of Girl Gone Wild - We'll put on the list! :)
This was the ballad, so introspective and personal for Madonna, when pop music critics, historians and fans really took her as a serious artist and not just a pop dance music hit star. As human beings, specially for those with traumatic childhood memories, we can relate to her sentiments in this song. Since you’re doing her 1986 True Blue album, perhaps you’ll cover the music videos of Papa Don’t Preach, and one of my favorites, La Isla Bonita specially her version during the 2001 Drowned World tour with her spectacular Spanish flamenco-style performance of this that brought the house down! Luv your insightful reaction, and the framed art in your background.
Thank you so much! :) We'll have to check out that version of La Isla Bonita. If you want to see our reaction to Papa Don't Preach, you can find it here: ruclips.net/video/Up7NvEO9fYo/видео.html We actually did this one early on (on our other channel) before we decided to take the Madonna Journey on this channel. ❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions yes, thank you. I’ll check your reaction on Papa Don’t Preach. I really like your 2-step reaction: the official music video, then followed by a live tour version. However, she has several popular favorites ( like Vogue, Like A Prayer, others) that she performs in separate era concert tours-always each version with a fresh artistic look and interpretation. As a Madonna fan, I feel fortunate to enjoy the luxury of seeing the richness and depth of her artistry.
I wish you guys reacted to the album version of this song instead of the video because the music video version is edited and the album version is full and perfect. Also Madonna has done a lot of films. Her best movies are Evita, A League Of Their Own, Dangerous Game, Dick Tracy, Who’s That Girl, Desperately Seeking Susan, and the two documentaries Truth Or Dare and my favorite Im Going To Tell You A Secret
Amazing song and video. Loved your reaction and interpretations as usual. It's such a powerful song, which has so much relevance today and I agree would resonate with many people on various levels.
When I first saw this as a teenager, I doubt I grasped the universal relatability of this song. Initially, I just remember the surprise of seeing this first major shift in Madonna's style...both musically as a powerful balladeer and aesthetically with a more mature and minimal look. A really pivotal moment for her and as a fan. Of course, I did feel a bit foolish for a moment....sitting there watching MTV waiting for the new Madonna video premiere draped in my rosaries and rubber bracelets 😂 I'm sure my parents were happy when that fashion moment passed LOL
You can leave any requests here in the comments (since we're going through Madonna's singles in order, it may take a bit to get to certain songs 😉).❤️❤️
In my TOP 5 Madonna songs...
Madonna look stunning in this
My favourite Madonna song

When Madonna performs your eyes are always on her. No matter what’s going on around her you just become fixated . Pure Star Quality

One of my all time favorites and this is a great album, this song showcased her ballad singing

Can also say how gorgeous her then husband Sean penn was in this video too ❤

Oh no! We'll have the tissues ready.

I cried like a baby, for many reasons seeing her performance, wow...no words!!
Madonna performed this song so beautiful and it fit beautifully with this Movie. At Close Range. Based on a True Story
beautiful and emotional reaction
Thank you so much! :)❤️

Very emotional. She always "kick ass" singing this song live...

This is her best ballad imo.
I told my husband about your channel and how I think you’re the two best reactors on RUclips today! He’s going to start watching with me
Awww. You're incredibly sweet. Thank you so much! :)
I love that you two reacting to Madonna videos is a wholesome mother/daughter activity you can do together
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Good reaction. I agree that this was one of her best songs. I think she was married to Sean Penn at the time, who was in this movie.
Thank you! :)
He best acting roles were 5 minute music videos
She certainly created beautiful pieces of art with her videos. :)

And yes, an incredibly powerful song.
My love affair with Madonna that has last almost 40 years started with This song and video
AT CLOSE RANGE (1986)
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON, LIKE HELL 👁👁🌋
