This is the song that started it all for me.. I loved it.. I loved its melody, its lyrics and that break and return.. Its incredible live... Its a one take vocal.. She wrote it as a favour and sung it to demo it for Patrick Leonard, who wrote the music.. I fell in love with Madonna here and could not marry it with the Like A Virgin/Material Girl Madonna.. I was so impressed, I think this song is a masterpiece.. and then Papa Don't Preach dropped and 16year old me was hooked
Musically, this is probably one of the best bridges ever done! Haunting yet so captivating. Visually, this is the most beautiful Madonna has ever been… Classic beauty. Just flawless.
Madonna’s vocals were her initial vocals at the producer’s home, they were not redone which is quite incredible. She went & wrote the song to the melody the producer had made & that was that. Thank you for another great reaction 💗 💫
If I remember correctly, she recorded this in one take. And it being the first take, if you listen carefully, you can hear the faint rustling of paper, because she still needed to read the lyrics.
Yes, she worte the lyrics and go to Leonard's studio and recorded it, and after Madonna asked: who will sing the song? and Leonard said: you! ...it was already made it and wonderfully, and they used this take for the record
This haunting ballad was number one in The US and is definitely one of Madonna's best songs and strongest vocal performances, and my all time favorite of hers, btw ❤️ I also love the video because it matches the song's intense loneliness and moodiness and she looks stunning. 😍😍😍😍😍
She had started her 1st reinvention. Her critics before this had said that she sounded like Minnie Mouse on helium. Here, she showed a wider vocal range. She also had ditched all of the accessories from before. There were mall stores that were selling everything a girl (or boy) needed to be a Madonnawannabe. They did not last long after this. The song is beautiful and haunting and has withstood the test of time IMHO.
At this point she had already 2 #1 songs in America, a pop uptempo song and a ballad. Although she was considered the Queen of the dancefloor she decided to release a ballad as the first single of her then new album, the record company said; "No way". But this time she was completely in charge of her career, she did it her way and she succeded, the song was #1 in America on the Billboard Hot 100 and also her first number 1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. I love her ballads so much. Nice reaction dude!
Thanks! Yeah I see Madonna bending the rules in terms of what "dance music" singers can do. This could pass for something by a singer who only did adult contemp. She pulled it off perfect!
This song is beautiful in a different way. One of my favorites! Her performance to this song in her Confessions Tour is AMAZING! I hope we can watch you react to it at some point! Thank you for posting! ✌🏻😉✌🏻
This song helped me through the dark times. The lyrics in part of the chorus ….’Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned, till then, it will burn inside of me.’ That was my life back then and I did ‘Live To Tell.’
Yeah I think everybody can probably adopt this as a theme song of some kind of moment in their life that was trying or where they were tested and came out on the other side. Thanks for watching!
You’re my favorite reactor. You’re so mature about the content, and don’t get bogged down with bias ( most people have a preconceived bias or notion when it comes to Madonna) You’re fairly stoic which I like because I never know what your thinking, but I can see the wheels turning ..I appreciate the effort in the analysis, and your delivery. I very much look forward to your commentary on M’s music . Please continue
Apparently she wrote it in less than one hour and the vocals are the ones she recorded for the demo tape. I also think it’s about an abusive relationship. Beautiful song. It was a shock for all of us when it came out. It was this big ballad and the beginning of the chameleon Madonna with different looks and sounds. One of my all time favourite for sure!
@@AceM-Reacts She did re record it, but they kept the very first take from the demo tape. I think she sounds great there anyway. when I bought this single I was convinced that her new album was going to be more like a pop rock sound. Well, Madonna never fails to surprise us 😂😂😂.
Hi Ace, I don't think I have seen you review a song of hers as A++ yet, and you know what I am glad you chose this. Honestly this is her best song till that time in her career and definitely in my top 10 all time Madonna songs. Brilliant instrumentation, I remember when I first bought her greatest hits when I was still in high school and the moment I first heard this song I was transported. I recommend you check out Patrick Leonard the co-producer of the track and the guy who would work with Madonna for years to come, he describes the recording process of the song, it's a 4 minute video, you don't have to do a reaction for it ruclips.net/video/4DMESfrMcw4/видео.html
It’s absolutely NOT about Sean Penn. This song is about a childhood trauma, could be some type of abuse or loss or loneliness. It’s purposely vague which is the genius of the song and what makes it universally relatable to the listener. It’s definitely an 80s masterpiece

Yeah Like a Virgin and Material Girl don't even seem like her from the same universe. It was what like a year or two later? lol

IA. Shocking to see her so low key and serene.
@@AceM-Reacts totally!!!
My favorite Madonna song ever
So beautiful abd so haunting Madonna lives to tell
Excellent reaction and commentry! Beautiful and haunting song!
Thanks for reviewing this brilliant song! 👍🏻
That movie would have you weeping. Every time I watch it I cry. Binge watching you late at night lol

Thanks! Wow. These one take vocals are impressive!
@@marcdany1 Wow, so she wasn't originally supposed to sing this?
@@AceM-Reacts I think that originaly it was going to be sung by a man
And yes...her eyes.. Knock me out every time..
Yup her intriguing expressions cements everything!
Masterpiece 🙌 so haunting and real

I agree. So many videos (and songs) fall on their face trying to do the "less is more" approach, but here it works perfectly!

Yeah man no Minnie Mouse here! On the 1st album she def sounded like a care bear but not on this one! lol

At close range is a great movie. Also based on a true story

So interesting that she did this in one take. Def. a transition from where she was before in terms of style, visually and musically.

It is actually about "childhood scars" as Madonna herself told so.
From the Movie "At Close Range" True story about a crime family in PA. Christopher Walken & Sean Penn -- A True Masterpiece
Sounds interesting. Just from the movie clips I could tell the movie was intense and very dark.
Welcome to the Madonna who was now the real deal
This album is def showing a whole other side to her for sure!
She bumped Whitney Houston's The Greatest Love Of All at no. 1 with this song!🤓
Oops! Sorry Whit! 😜 That's actually another one I wanna react to!

Hey Luqas! Yeah I gave Into the Groove a A++ and this was definitely worthy of one too! Thanks for the vid, will definitely watch that one too!

And AceM can I say something. I love it when you were so impressed by the BRIDGE part - the "Wow" bit @5:00 is killing me, I just can't handle it💯
So eerie, so dark, so haunting, I don't have enough words to praise this song. This is a song sung by a God, not by a human.
