How Does Tesla's Autopilot Work?

- Even the most ardent Elon Musk stan will admit their lord and saviour hasn’t exactly delivered on his promise of properly autonomous self-driving vehicles. Yet, anyway. Tesla’s flamboyant CEO has repeatedly suggested we’d be there by now, and, frankly, we aren’t. But the so-called Autopilot feature available on all modern Teslas is a marvellous feat of engineering nonetheless.
What enables it to detect hazards up ahead? How does it then go about making sense of that information? Is it better at driving than human beings? Join us today as we pop the metaphorical hood and take a peek into how Autopilot actually works.
For an eye-opening introduction to just how sophisticated Tesla’s driving algorithm has become of late, take a look at this video released back in January 2020.

How Tesla's Autopilot Works - Наука
Although there have been some select few crashes with Teslas, I think it's still probably much more reliable in avoiding crashes than most human drivers behind a wheel. There are some bad drivers out there all over the country. Someday when most have self driving cars way in the future, I think it will make the roads a lot more efficient so there aren't crashes and long backups on the road.
I agree, it´s coming, we just need engineers and AI.
While much, if not all you say is true, do you want to be the person who gets injured or killed by a Tesla that makes an autonomous mistake? Maybe a human would do the same, but maybe not. Would you not sue, because the mistake was made by a "much safer" computer?
The real barrier we need to get past is partial autonomy. Cars that need a human driver but are equipped with a lot of safety automation and warnings could be safer than full self driving alone, essentially combining the best of both worlds (in terms of safety).
Next problem we will need to watch out for are remote terrorist attack, assassination, malware or virus attack, extreme breach of privacy
Tesla has at least three times more driver fatalities than any other premium cars in that price range.
It’s astonishing how fast Tesla and all of Elon Musk’s businesses are advancing. No one makes me more excited for the future then him!
that bullshit is advancing only in your mind 🤣🤣🤣
If you actually owned a Tesla you would know what every owner means. It is an amazing piece of engineering. Period.

@@morganangel340 I personally think it looks really beautiful, but you are ofc entitled to your own opinion!
You ignored FSD Beta completely! It will drive you anywhere and is between level 4-5. Look up Sandy Munro or most experts. FSD is a million miles ahead of autopilot, and you even had the audacity to show clips of it driving. Autopilot is also not supposed to be used as a self driving program, so both of the examples you cited of accidents where when it was being misused, but still, the stats show that the average american car crashes every 1.5 million miles, Teslas every 5 million I think, and with Autopilot it is 4 times as far again. It is dozens of times safer, but EVERY SINGLE accident is shown on every single news, in every single country, all over the world. Its like the battery fires, all 3 of them. There are 1 MILLION gas fires a year, in the us alone!
Don't even have to watch the video to tell you he doesn't know how Tesla's FSD works. Bet you words like "BEV net", self supervising learning, predictable path finding, ground truth, or pseudo lidar were never mentioned. Just a bunch nonsense that adds zero value.

With every update you can feel the improvement if you are using the autopilot a lot. I drive from bay area to LA a lot and I usually don't even have a single disengagement. Pretty cool and I can enjoy the drive more.
Hey I have a tesla and planning to do bay to la trips…how often do you charge on the trip?
@@darrellcave1991 if I leave with 90% charge. I do about two stops each about 20 min. You can definitely do just one stop if you don't care what state of charge you want to get there.
Imagine Tesla's talking to each other..
Who said they don't. They probably do, atleast can. So they maybe can tell each other on the road where they are. Idk I'm just guessing.

You either don't know about the FSD beta or you are purposely leaving it out? FSD is coming in the next 2 years and I'm buying all the tesla stock I can afford 😆
Agree. I'm not a tesla fanboy but this is something that should be mentioned here
Agree completely.
It's coming late this year.
@@cyrusadamrevilla3851 I'm fine with that time-line
Tesla have come out to the California DMV in March this year to admit that FSD is not full self-driving autonomy. So yo umight want to hold onto your coins for the time being.
Why didn’t you mention FSD?
It's not level 2, FSD is 4 near 5. People need to have this info.
Yeah
Self driving modes were in beta mode until recently. The full self driving package is now a 10,000 dollar upgrade. This is because they reduced the price of their cars a couple thousand dollars. I believe that Tesla is also working on making the full self driving feature a monthly service rather than large one time payment which would be nice.
I don't know how Tesla's gonna work in India ....
@Charlie Zelenoff Someone give this man a tissue to wipe his sorry ass
Imagine your car reaches your office before you sit in it.
How is it possible to make a video about Teslas "autonomous self-driving vehicles" without mentioning the FSD beta?
Exactly
Auto pilot in it self means that its only control of the driving when a straight route is set , like in planes
I think autopilot can be granted permissions but they need to wait of full self driving
thanks for the information it helped me in completing my assignment.
I think that Tesla's overall design of their autonomous self-driving functionality is way, way head of what its competitors are working on. Plus, because Tesla has so many cars on the road, with every day that passes Tesla is gathering more and more data to make their autonomous self-driving the leader in the industry.
thank you so much for this video...!!
Autonomous driving hold so much promise, from car pooling to leaving the owner downtown for work while returning to a less densely part for charging in the daytime to very cheap taxi rides when a driver doesn't have to be paid.
Very informative and you have to really admire this technology. Especially those behind its creation. AI and robotics are clearly the path of the future.
"autopilot isn't ready yet" . How about FSD (Full Self Driving) which was conveniently left out?
Elon came out last month to the California DMV to 'admit' it isn't capable of full self driving. So it was sensibly left out (for the time being).
0:02 MKBHD here
My model Y has autopilot but is not Full Self Driving (FSD). Autopilot is not "available" on all vehicles but is standard. FSD is a separate feature and costs much more. So many reviews and conversations confuse the features of the two.
Despite what many people have said I'd argue that there's nothing wrong with the name 'Autopilot'. The autopilot you'd find in most modern planes, as far as I'm aware, only maintains heading, altitude and speed. It's still up to the pilots to take over when doing maneuvers such as landing.
Similarly in a Tesla it'll keep going straight ahead at the same speed, but also adjusting speed and changing lanes according to surrounding traffic. You could already argue at that stage that it's more than the autopilot we know from planes.
To quite Wikipedia when just googling 'autopilot': An autopilot is a system used to control the trajectory of an aircraft, marine craft or spacecraft without requiring constant manual control by a human operator. Autopilots do not replace human operators.

I wonder how will they auto drive in india🤔🤔.It is gonna be a headache for musk.
He hasn't kept many promises with anything he is involved in but he does put on a show.
Actually, he does keep a promise once he makes it… even if it takes years. When the Tesla roadster was in development, the expected unveiling date was around 2007, but because of errors cropping up it was delayed to almost a year later. Many cancelled their orders, but many also stayed. I’m sure this will be the case in the future, and why it seems like he hasn’t kept his promises. I may be wrong about other things he’s promised though, so correct me if I am.
It's still a mistery to me if the car relies on the lines to stay on the road. If so, does it mean autopilot wont work on snowy roads ? What about roads with lines that are partially off ?
It does use road lines but can drives on dirt roads too. If no lines are detected then the computer makes the lines
@@Raylen_Fa-ield It uses the exact same system you do with your eyes. Lines are great for maintaining lanes but you, and Tesla, can make assumptions without ALL the data. They can crunch said data, and use maps to help as well. BUT, and this is important, If it deems it to unsafe it does what you are supposed to do, STOPS. and can ring for help if needed. You can take over too, !!!! shock and horror!
If a Tesla autopilot drives on a road and the lines disappear, it will figure the path on its own. It will actually drive unassisted for awhile until it decides it’s not safe to do so anymore. You can actually see the system figuring out the path on its own as it is shown on the autopilot’s display view. I know this because I’ve tried it many times going from roads with lane lines that disappear for miles. And this isn’t even the FSD yet. It’s just the limited autopilot.
Elon Musk said Teslas should be level 5 by the end of the year
For reals?!? That’s amazing.
Don’t take him to literally, he always over promises. Expect 2022-2023.
Level 5 means no steering wheel
For the FSD Beta. Not the autopilot this twit kept confusing it with. There is a huge increase in data available now and the growth is extraordinary. DOJO (the supercomputer they are building to crunch said data)will make all the difference
Why is it I trust Elon musk more than the us government 😎😎😎

The latest for the USA (which presumably includes Tesla vehicles) is ~484,000 miles.
Seven times more frequent.
Around 100 people die per day from car accidents in the United States.
Around 10,000 people per day will require medical attention for injuries sustained in a car accident in the United States.

Aircraft autopilot systems do little more than maintain height/speed/heading, or follow a preplanned 2D route at best. Tesla's "autopilot" seem to be several levels of automation above it's aviation counterpart.

What is so Special About using cameras, radar and ultrasonic on a car? My three year old standard family van is equipped with those. The radar is taking care about the speed up to 210 km/h.
What Tesla is showing with FSD Beta is impressive, though.
Btw. Radar is also giving up in snowy conditions or during heavy rain.
U should rename ur channel to tesla vision
The real challenge for Tesla's autopilot is India or other highly dense cities/countries without proper roads, and regulations or loyal drivers...
Stocks tanked, good time to buy now?
Sir, Tesla car device are like a 'mobile device either computer'? The screen....?
Elon said they are removing radar
The true safety of the system can only derived from the rate of near misses it has been involved in where if the driver had not taken control the car it would have crashed. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that human intervention is common and the need to have hands on wheel further indicates this. People like to point out that Tesla cars are involved in a low percentage of crashes but don't acknowledge Tesla cars are a lower percentage of the vehicles on the road so logically will be involved in a lower number of crashes.
More freedom!

My car has lane sway and lane keep. I don't use both why? Simply we will NEVER achieve fully autonomous driving! I could be wrong but can Tesla 1) see a small obstacle/nail and swerve around it, 2) act when in the peripheral vision sense a speeding motocycle approaching 8 or 4 O'Clock then cut you off, 3) Oversize trailer passing you on the left lane, or Oversize vehicle heading towards you on a 2 lane highway (so you'll have to move to the right/shoulder), 4) crazy driver passing middle lane head right at you on 2 lane highway (80mph limit in many places in Texas), and 5) rock pebble raining down a truck in front of you and you need to step on the brake, move two lanes to the right. Can Tesla sense tiny pebble cracking the windshield? Can tesla do all that as quickly as a human or does it just fall right into a giant pothole because as with my car - it does a really good job keep the car in the smack middle of the lane. The last point, driving means we never stay in the middle of the lane, pick the best line turning corners, typically towing drive slightly to the right on right lane - is Tesla smart enough to take all that into consideration (smart enough to know each driver's characteristics), then again, I may take a corner one way today but with a giant bolt sticking up on the road I may take a wide turn today? One day I am sure we'll get there but I believe we are not there yet, far from it.
Autopilot is not been able to operate without robotic tech support in system..
