  • Ever wondered how Tesla's Autopilot feature works? Hands down, it is one the BEST features that the car has to offer! Driving on the highway has just gone to a whole new level! In this video I will go over the differences between Basic Autopilot and the Full Self Driving Package offered by Tesla. Then we get out on the highway and I show you how to use Autopilot properly, what my thoughts are on its use and finally some mistakes to avoid doing with Autopilot. This feature, along with FSD, is a HUGE step forward in the world of autonomous driving vehicles!

    I recently bought a M3LR and the only thing I don’t like on it is the Autopilot AND the regular cruise control. After a few instances of phantom braking, the fear of getting rear ended and the steering inputs needed every 15 to 20 seconds I doubt if I will ever use it. The regenerative braking also effects the regular cruise control to the point that it is either on or off, it cannot coast. My GMC truck’s cruise control is much, much more user friendly. It has a temporary shut down of the cruise control which can be re engaged with the resume button. It will coast when disengaged. It has a lane keeping feature that gently steers you back into the lane if you drift out of it. My point is if I have to keep my hand on the wheel the GMC system is far superior and makes for a more relaxing cruise control experience. Other than that the Tesla is absolutely the most fun vehicle I have ever owned and I have had some fun ones.

    I live rural and noticed Autopilot/Cruise Control works best on main Hwy/Freeway. The smaller highways seem to have issues, Phantom braking and false alerts. I still need to figure out how to use basic cruise control, it freaks out around corners and with oncoming traffic. Yesterday the Tesla flashed some warning and thought a parked car was about to side swipe us.

    Just found your channel and find this video very informative. I live in Florida as do you and can totally identify with the inclement weather issues you spoke of. My current vehicle a 2021 Kia Telluride has problems during severe rain and will disengage. Personally I think in severe rain it is better to use our own skills until auto and self driving are perfected. I am taking delivery on my Y performance in 10 days. The anticipation is making me crazy.
    The other issue we have here is people cutting in at the last second for exiting. Oh well I need to learn to cope with these folks but wish they would be more careful and plan appropriately. Thanks and look forward to more content from you.

The car will slow to 45 while those behind me (usually in darkness) end up right on my tail. Is there a setting where I can tell the car to not regard speed limits while in autopilot? 22M3RWD. Is this "phantom braking"? Thanks.

    Seeing how good autopilot is here , i dont think FSD for 15k straight up is THAT worth it . Assuming you did the monthly $200 fee for it every month then it would take me 6 years to reach 15k. And Considering i can gain acces with a subscription model as well, then i can kinda pick and choose what months i want to start and end the subscription. Idk maybe theres a catch or something but that at least my thought process behind it.

It doesn't care if lanes are poorly marked. Also I don't have phantom braking problems. And if someone pulls in front of me, it doesn't overreact. I may just wait for FSD to be perfected.

    • @jacobvriesema6633
      @jacobvriesema6633 Год назад +1

      If the autopilot can’t see lines due to rain and turns off, I have to imagine it’s the same for missing or barely visible ones. If the car can’t see them when you try to activate autopilot, I believe it just won’t engage. I haven’t tested this yet, but it makes intuitive sense to me.

    • @MikeAmiel
      @MikeAmiel  Год назад

      Hey John, thanks for watching! In the situation where the autopilot no longer can see the lines whether it’s due to the lines no longer being visible(faded), or due to weather such as heavy rain, the car displays a warning on the screen. The two that I’ve experienced are: 1. A red warning telling the driver to take over, accompanied by a loud alert chime. At that point the car doesn’t automatically slow down. 2. If visibility is poor due to heavy rain or a camera being blocked, the car will display a warning on the display stating that visibility is poor-driver should take over, and in severe circumstances the car will slow down but it’ll be very gradual and not abrupt. However, in those situations I have, and would recommend, taking over from the autopilot.
      Neither of those instances have caused the vehicle to brake hard where I was worried about a rear end impact. I think you’re referring to “phantom breaking” but that’s improved significantly and I almost never experience that anymore. With the over-the-air updates, Tesla continues to update software and safety features. I hope this answered your questions.

    With the basic autopilot, will the car slow down when there is a sharp turn ahead?

    • @MikeAmiel
      @MikeAmiel  Год назад

      Unfortunately basic autopilot will not slow down for just a sharp turn. If there’s a car in front of you and they slow down, autopilot will also slow down based on the cruise distance the car is set to. I typically limit my use of autopilot to the highway where the curves in the road are more gradual.

    Lots of electric motor rolling resistance (regenerative braking) on these cars, 98% of the time I don't need to use the brakes.

    I'm confused - does basic Autopilot drive/steer in cruise control?

    • @MikeAmiel
      @MikeAmiel  Год назад

      Basic Autopilot will keep you in your designated lane at the cruise control speed you have it set to (currently 85mph is the max speed you can use for Autopilot and 90mph for just cruise control). Basic Autopilot will steer through most curves on highways.

    Can autopilot follow roads with a curve pathway?

    • @MikeAmiel

      Autopilot does take curves on the highway. On regular roads it will take moderate curves but not full 90° turns.

    Inside Autopilot setting, there are two "offset" settings. Do you know how each one works? I have basic autopilot and I am trying to configure it to adjust the car speed depending on the current speed limits, either slow down or speed up according to the speed limit sign. So far my Model 3 does not do that. Thank you.

    • @MikeAmiel
      @MikeAmiel  2 года назад

      So it appears with the new update(new screen design), they changed these settings. I had mine set up to go 10mph over the speed limit and when I went in to my autopilot settings it was set to current speed. If you click the “Autopilot” tab, then “Speed Limit”, then “Fixed” or “Percentage”, you can change the setting to what you want. The “Fixed” offset will adjust the speed based on a specific amount over or under the current speed limit. The “Percentage” offset will adjust speed based on a % over or under the speed limit.

    Why would anyone with any level of common sense think it's okay to get behind the wheel of a car and expect the car to drive itself at high speed, without having hands on the wheel and any intervention from the person behind the wheel which is what people who have this system in their car seem to expect it to do? Isn't the whole point of being the driver to drive and control the automobile?
